STUDENT LIFEThere is more to a study abroad experience than going to lectures and studying in the reading room. At LUC there are many student clubs you can join; e.g. film, photo, outdoor sports, longboard, music, basketball, hockey, volleyball, gaming, ski & snowboard, dancing, student choir and the student newspaper (ProfHiL). Joining student groups can offer discounts and is also a good way to make Norwegian friends.

In Lillehammer there is also a wide variety of different bars, clubs and restaurants creating an exciting nightlife. One of the bars is Bingo’n, which is run by the students. This student pub organizes parties, social events, concerts, quiz nights and a student festival once a year. Lillehammer also offers a variety of other festivals, cultural and sports events such as a Jazzfestival, The Norwegian Festival of Literature, Culture Night, the Amamdus Youth Film Festival, World Cup events in ski-jumping, down-hill skiing, slalom, and cross-country skiing and the Birkebeiner race, a long-distance (54 km) cross-country ski marathon from Rena to Lillehammer.

In spring and summer you can enjoy Mjøsa beach. This is a grass beach next to lake Mjøsa. The beach offers great opportunity for relaxation, barbecuing, beach volleyball and other activities.

The Lillehammer region is truly a winter wonderland! The first snow usually comes in November, and from December to the end of March the landscape is covered in white. Very few places in the world can offer such a vast selection of snow-related activities; cross country skiing, snowboarding, downhill skiing, tobogganing, sledding, etc. Alpine ski centres are usually open from November until the end of April. During summer Hafjell, the nearest Alpine resort, converts the slopesto a downhill mountainbike (MTB) park.

COURSES FOR EXCHANGE STUDENTS

NORWEGIAN LANGUAGE COURSE

Courses taught in English can be found on our wesite, www.hil.no/international.

Erasmus students who want to take courses taught in Norwegian have the possibility to attend preparatory language courses in Oslo or Trondheim (Erasmus Intensive Language Courses, EILC).

Even if your lectures are in English, you might want to learn a little bit of Norwegian? Language is the key to understanding a society and its people. It is there-fore highly recommended that you attend the basic Norwegian course (5 ECTS credits) that is offered to all international students free of charge.

Norway is an expensive country to live in, but this is balanced out by free education and free health care. Student housing in the cheapest category costs approximately NOK 3250 per month. This is including (wireless) internet, electricity and water. A dinner at the student cafeteria costs approximately NOK 65.

The State Educational Loan Fund estimates the average expenditure for students to be approximately NOK 8000 a month (1000 EURO). Although expenses vary from person to person, this estimate is expected to cover room and board, study materials, clothing, transport, medical and dental care, university fees and other necessities. Students at universities and university colleges in Norway do not pay tuition, only a small semester fee.
