A magazine for the Instagram community, why? At the end of this editorial you’ll have the answer. Don’t get ahead, don’t cheat and just keep reading. What is the use of a magazine about the Instagram community? This one is not so easy but has a more straightforward answer: to get to know about the people who create those wonderful images, their lives, passions and influences. To share tips that will help us get better on IG and also get more likes and followers, and let no one say that this does not matter. So, how are we going to do it? In each edition there will be six new guest editors, each one will pick a theme and together, they will make an artistic selection of the photos that best fit the ideas. On this first edition of Likes Magazine, each one of these “curators” was asked to interview their number one on IG, and we liked the idea so much that we’d like to keep it. Likes will change and mold with every new edition, but we don’t pretend to be smarter that what we are or to become a photographic authority, but to have fun. We will give our everything to make Likes Magazine a window where all the talent uploaded daily is rewarded, either from an IG Star or an unknown user with a few followers, and to accomplish this we need you as a reader, and most of all as the protagonist. And now, to answer the first question: because we LOVE Instagram.

¿Por qué una revista para la comunidad de Instagram? Al final de este editorial tendrán la respuesta. No se adelante. No haga trampa. Siga leyendo ¿Para qué una revista sobre la comunidad de Instagram? Esa es menos fácil, pero tiene respuestas directas: para empezar, conocer a los que componen esas imágenes maravillosas, saber más de sus vidas, influencias y pasiones. Para compartir tips que nos ayuden a mejorar en IG y, de paso, ganar likes y seguidores, que nadie venga ahora a salir con que esto no importa ¿Cómo lo haremos? En cada revista habrá seis nuevos editores invitados: cada uno escogerá un tema y entre todos se hará la curaduría con las fotos que mejor encajen para cada idea. En esta primera edición de Likes, a uno de los curadores se le propuso entrevistar a su Número Uno en IG, y eso nos gustó tanto que queremos mantener la idea. Likes se irá moldeando y remodelando en cada edición, no pretendemos ser más inteligentes de lo que somos ni convertirnos en una autoridad en fotografía, pero sí divertirnos. Daremos lo mejor de nosotros para convertir a Likes en una vitrina donde se promueva el talento que se derrocha día a día en el mundo, venga de un IG Star o de un desconocido con pocos followers, y para lograrlo te queremos como lector pero, sobre todo, como protagonista. Ahora sí, la respuesta a la primera pregunta: porque nos encanta Instagram.

1. Your photos always convey an emotion, a mood, a feeling, an atmosphere. What inspires you when you get up every day?I just try to find an emotion… I can find interesting and enjoyable things in my city or any other place… I`ve always liked soft toned atmospheres…

2. When did you begin to be such a good photographer? Tell us how did you come to photography?I’ve always loved photography… I began many years ago… Later, I discovered Lomography, and I bought the DianaF, the first Russian camera…Lomography has good vibrations, when you take a picture it’s a surprise!, you don’t know what the final product will look like, it was a pleasure to return back to basics, there´s a charm to it.Then, I started using the iPhone more and read about iPhonography… It’s almost the same as Lomography.

3. What place does Instagram have in your daily life?Wow! It’s a really amazing and creative community…You can meet people from all around the world and most of them are very talented…It’s always a pleasure to take a break (or many) and go on IG :)

1. Tus fotos siempre transmiten una emoción, un estado de ánimo, un sentimiento, una atmósfera. ¿Qué te inspira al levantarte cada día? Solo trato de encontrar una emoción… Muchas cosas me pueden interesar y puedo disfrutar en mi ciudad o en otro lugar… Siempre me han gustado las atmósferas con tonos suaves…

2. ¿Cuándo empezaste a ser tan buena fotógrafa? Cuéntanos un poco cómo llegaste a la fotografíaSiempre me ha gustado la fotografía… Comencé años atrás… Luego descubrí la lomografía y compré la DianaF, la primera cámara Rusa… La lomografía tiene buenas vibras, cuando tomas una fotografía es una sorpresa, no sabes cuál será el resultado final… Y fue un placer volver a lo básico… Es realmente encantador… Luego comencé a utilizar más y más el iPhone y leí muchos artículos sobre iPhonografía… Es muy parecido a la lomografía.

3. ¿Qué lugar ocupa Instagram en tu vida cotidiana?¡Wow! Es una comunidad tan maravillosa y creativa… Puedes conocer tanta gente alrededor del mundo, la mayoría son muy talentosos… Siempre es un gran placer tomarse un tiempo libre (o mucho) e ir a Instagram…

4. What is the difference between a professional photographer and an instagrammer?I don’t think there’s a difference. I met professional photographers on IG, and many other people that are not professionals, but so talented…For me, it’s about experience or technique, just a feeling, an emotion...

5. What photographers outside Instagram do you admire?I love many photographers like Man Ray, Martin Paar, Sophie Calle, Helmut Newton & his wife, the talented Alice Springs, Ellen Von Unwerth and many other of course…

6. What other outside influence photography has been key in your creative work?I’m a textile designer, I draw patterns and I’m curious by nature, my head is always brimming with ideas, many artistic trends influence and give me inspiration. Movies, theater and literature, particularly comics, I really love to read them... You can find inspiration in your daily life...

7. A good photo is sought or it finds you?Most of the time, it finds me…I love to be surprised…I walk down the street looking up and boom, I see something graphic or extraordinary and I shoot it.

4. ¿Cuál es la diferencia entre un fotógrafo profesional y un instagrammer?No creo que exista una diferencia. Conocí fotógrafos profesionales en Instagram y a muchas otras personas que no son profesionales pero son muy talentosos. Para mí se trata de experiencia o técnica; es una emoción, un sentimiento.

5. ¿Qué fotógrafos fuera de Instagram admiras?Me gustan muchos fotógrafos: Man Ray, Martin Paar, Sophie Calle, Helmut Newton y su esposa, la talentosa Alice Springs, Ellen Von Unwerth y muchos otros por supuesto...

6. ¿Qué otra influencia fuera de la fotografía ha sido determinante en tu trabajo? Soy diseñadora de textiles, dibujo patrones y soy curiosa por naturaleza, mi cabeza siempre vibra con tantas ideas y tendencias artísticas que me inspiran. Las películas, el teatro y los “comics” en particular son una influencia porque me gusta mucho leerlos… Puedes encontrar inspiración en lo cotidiano.

7. ¿Una buena foto se busca o se encuentra?La mayoría de las veces me consigue a mí… Me encanta que me sorprendan… Siempre camino viendo hacia arriba y de repente veo algo gráfico o fuera de lo ordinario y disparo.

8. What advice would you give to those who are uploading their first picture on IG?Just enjoy! Don’t be scared of being judged, there is no pressure… Everyone on IG is really really cool, and it’s a good thing to make progress, because it’s always very interesting to receive feedback.

9. In what publication you would like to see your photos?Likes Magazine!! It’s my first Interview on IG, and I really enjoyed it :)

10. With which instagramers would you like to go on a weekend to take pictures and where would you like to go?Oh wow…I posted my first capture January 1st 2012, and met many people who followed me since the beginning and vice-versa... There are many great instagramers, but they’re all around the world... maybe we should think abput doing a big Instagramers Tour around the globe... ;)

8. ¿Qué consejo le darías a quien hoy recién sube su primera foto en Instagram?¡Solamente que difruten! Sin presión, sin miedo a ser juzgados… Todos en instagram son personas muy muy “cool” y es muy bueno progresar porque siempre es interesante recibir “feedback”.

9. ¿En qué publicación importante te gustaría ver tus fotos?En la revista Likes!! Es mi primera entrevista con respecto a Instagram y la disfruté mucho :)

10. ¿Con qué instagramers te gustaría salir a hacer fotos un fin de semana y a donde te gustaría ir?¡Wow!... Posteé mi primera fotografía el primero de enero de 2012 y conocí mucha gente que me sigue desde el principio y viceversa. Así que hay muchos “instagramers” que son muy muy buenos y están alrededor del mundo… Deberíamos pensar en un gran tour de “instagramers” alrededor del mundo.

¨I believe that often amateur photographers, who capture their pics having only their passion and illusions, have sometimes a fresher approach than professionals who might be more rigid with too much academic rules.¨

1. In your photos we always find an excelent use of color, beautiful contrasts, a good eye for lines and urban texture composition. What inspires you when you get up every day?The pictures I post in IG have a freestyle, they are done with no pretensions, they are made with the sole purpose of sharing and having fun in a “special period” of my life. I photograph the things that I like and I think might please or interest other people. I try to vary and although I am vey much attracted to architecture, I prefer not to have a monothematic gallery.

2. When did you become such a good photographer? How did you discover the art of photography?From a very young age I was attracted to photography. At age 15 I was working with the Salesian Audiovisual Center at Don Bosco School. Shortly after I met Franco Rubartelli, a famous Vogue photographer from the 60’s and 70’s who worked with top models like Veruschka. Rubartelli gave me the opportunity to enter the world of the 24 frames per second, and motion footage. After working one year with Rubartelli, I decided to become independent and founded a film production company, and later also an advertising agency. Thus I have been most of my life linked to photography.

3. Define what qualifies as a good picture to you.I think no rigid criterion or strict rules should exist to catalogue what a nice photography is. The only thing they should all have in common is they must appeal to you, catch you and move some fiber of your emotions.

En tus fotos siempre se aprecia un excelente uso del color, hermosos contrastes, un impecable ojo para las lineas y las composiciones con texturas urbanas. ¿Qué te inspira al levantarte cada día?Las fotos que subo a IG son fotos libres, que no tienen ningún tipo de pretensiones y las hago solo con el ánimo de compartir y pasarlo bien en un “periodo especial” en mi vida. Fotografío cosas que me gustan y creo que podrían gustar o interesar a otras personas. Trato de variar, y aunque me atrae mucho la arquitectura, prefiero no tener una galería monotemática.

2. ¿Cuándo empezaste a ser tan buen fotógrafo? Cuéntanos un poco cómo llegaste a la fotografía.Desde muy joven me atrajo la fotografía. A los 15 años colaboraba con el Centro Audiovisual Salesiano del Colegio Don Bosco. Al poco tiempo conocí al afamado Franco Rubartelli, fotógrafo de Veruschka entre otras grandes modelos. Rubartelli me dio la oportunidad de ingresar al mundo de las 24 fotos por segundo, el movimiento y las filmaciones. Después de trabajar un año con Rubartelli, decidí independizarme y fundé una productora cinematográfica, posteriormente también creé una agencia de publicidad. De esta manera he estado casi toda mi vida vinculado a la fotografía.

3. Define para ti una buena fotografíaCreo que no debe existir un criterio rígido ni norma alguna que catalogue lo que es una buena fotografía. Lo único que todas deben tener en común es que te llamen la atención, te atrapen y muevan alguna fibra de tus emociones.

4. What place does Instagram have in your daily life?It was my friend and extraordinary musician Julio d’Escrivan, @soinu, who seven months ago invited me to join the group. At that time I was beginning a kind of sabbatical year and, although part of the idea was to take a break from my work including everything that had to do with cameras and photographs, the idea of using a cell phone to do my photos was so different and gave me such freedom. IG gradually took more of my time. I think if I measure it in hours worked, IG might be taking 15% of my day but after my sabbatical year, this percentage will have to decrease significantly.

5. Could you tell us which photo application you use and what is your favorite filter?I have only worked with the application PhotoStudioHD, and although I do not have a favorite filter, I frequently use the Stroke Colors.

6. What photographers outside Instagram do you admire and who has influenced your work?I admire thousands of photographers and that admiration does not only have to do with their photographs but also with my mood.I love the strength of Helmut Newton, the softness of David Hamilton, the gothic in Chris Anthony, the slices of life of Damon Winter and Sebastião Salgado, only to mention a few.

4. ¿Qué lugar ocupa instagram en tu vida cotidiana?Fue mi amigo y extraordinario músico Julio d’ Escrivan, @soinu, quien hace unos 7 meses me invitó a unirme al grupo. Para ese entonces yo comenzaba una especie de “año sabático”, y aunque parte de la idea era desvincularme por un tiempo de mi trabajo incluyendo todo lo que tenga que ver con cámaras y fotografías, la idea de utilizar el celular resultaba diferente y mucho más libre. Poco a poco IG fue abarcando más tiempo en mi día. Yo creo que si lo mido en horas dedicadas, IG debe estar ocupando un 15% de mi día. Pienso que al terminar mi año de descanso este porcentaje tendrá que disminuir notoriamente.

5. ¿Podrías hablarnos qué aplicación fotográfica usas y cuál es tu filtro favorito?Únicamente he trabajado con la aplicación PhotoStudioHD, y aunque no tengo un filtro favorito, utilizo mucho los Stroke Colors.

6. ¿Qué fotógrafos fuera de instagrams admiras y quién ha influido en tu trabajo?Admiro a miles de fotógrafos y esta admiración, depende no solo de sus fotografías, si no también, de mi estado de ánimo.Me gusta: La fuerza de Hellmut Newton, la suavidad de David Hamilton, lo gótico de Chris Anthony, los trozos de vida de Damon Winter y Sebastião Salgado. Esto solo por mencionar algunos.

7. A good photo is sought or does it find you?I think a professional photographer most of the time has to look for or create his own pictures. An amateur photographer has more freedom and can find them more easily.

8. What picture do you like and still haven’t been able to take?In this case it would be related to my profession and it would be about brands or products that I’d love to create, photograph or shoot for. For example I would love to film something for Apple, or Vespa motorbikes.

9. What advice would you give to those who are uploading their first picture on IG?To try for their second picture to give them more satisfaction than the first, and the third even more than the second. Never stop having fun and not worry about the number of people who follow them but about the interaction they can find with them and the satisfaction to follow the ones they admire.

10. How did you start to make a name for yourself?When I started, I only knew @soinu who invited me to participate, @lamaragall and a couple more. I think when @chattikoma and @tomwhite began to follow me, they helped me expand my list of followers.

7. ¿Una buena foto se busca o se encuentra?Creo que un fotógrafo profesional, la mayoría de las veces, debe buscar o crear su fotografía. Un fotógrafo aficionado es más libre y la encuentra con mayor facilidad.

8. ¿Qué fotografía te gustaría hacer y aún no has podido tomar?En este caso lo vincularía más a mi profesión y se trataría de productos o marcas a los cuales me gustaría crear, fotografiar y filmar, por ejemplo filmar algo para Apple o de motos Vespa.

9. ¿Qué consejo le darías a quien hoy recién sube su primera foto en instagram?Que trate que la segunda foto le de más satisfacción que la primera y la tercera aun más que la segunda. Que nunca deje de divertirse y que no se preocupe por el número de personas que lo sigue sino por la buena interacción con sus seguidores y la satisfacción de seguir a quien admira.

10. ¿Cómo te empezaste a ser conocido en Instagram? Cuando empecé solo conocía a @soinu quien me invitó a participar, a @lamaragall y a un par de personas más. Creo que cuando @tomwhite y @chattikoma empezaron a seguirme, fueron ellos quienes realmente me ayudaron a ampliar mi lista de seguidores.

Instagram taught us that we can all tell great stories through pictures, even if we’re not photographers or writers. A mother’s love, a moment in the city, they’re not just pictures but stories, because when you hit “like’’ to a photo a heart pops up on the screen, but when a great title has been written a heart glows in the person that reads it.

Instagram nos enseñó que todos podemos contar grandes historias con las imágenes, aunque no seamos fotógrafos ni escritores. El amor de una madre, un momento de la ciudad, pasan de ser imágenes a ser cuentos, porque cuando le damos like a uno foto sale un corazón en la pantalla, pero también cuando se escribe un buen título sale un corazón en las personas que lo leen.

1. I feel inspired by Jason Peterson´s photos.Who or what inspires you?I am inspired by the urban environments where I live. I love to walk and look for things to happen.

2. Your photos are so finely crafted that I believe you have a creative department dedicated to them.How much time do you invest in Instagram daily? I have a very busy and creatively demanding job. IG is my perfect distraction for when I don’t wantto think. To me it’s very mindless. This allows me to clear my head and solve my daily work problems. I am always shooting photos, whenever I see the right light.

3. What has more influence over Jason? The advertising over the photos or the photos on the advertising? I am more influenced by people’s reactions to advertising than the actual advertising. I love to understand how groups of people think and react. What moves them and makes them happy.

4. Is Instagram a hobby for you? An addiction? A trampoline? What is it?It’s an outlet. I can do what I want and I don’t ask anyone what they think. If you want to be great at anything to have to be addicted to it. I have a very addictive personality, this is the reason I don’t drink, smoke or do drugs.

1. A mí me inspiran las fotos de Jason Peterson.¿Qué o quién te inspira a ti?Me inspira el ambiente urbano en el que vivo. Me gusta caminar y ver las cosas que pasan.

2. Tus fotos son tan finamente trabajadas que he llegado a pensar que tienes un departamento creativo dedicado a ellas. ¿Cuánto tiempo le dedicas a Instagram diariamente?Tengo un trabajo que demanda mucha creatividad y me mantiene muy ocupado. Instagram es la distracción perfecta para mí cuando no quiero pensar. Esto me permite despejar la mente y resolver mis problemas diarios de trabajo. Siempre tomo fotos cuando la luz es la correcta.

3. ¿Qué influye más en Jason? ¿La publicidad en sus fotos o sus fotos en la publicidad?Me inspira más la reacción de las personas hacia la publicidad que la publicidad como tal. Me gusta comprender cómo piensan y reaccionan los diferentes grupos de personas; lo que los mueve y hace felices.

4. ¿Instagram es para tí un pasatiempo? ¿Una adicción? ¿Un trampolín? ¿Qué?Es una forma de expresión. Puedo hacer lo que quiero sin preguntarle a nadie lo que piensa. Si quieres ser bueno en algo debes ser adicto a ello. Tengo una personalidad muy adictiva, por esa razón no bebo, fumo ni consumo drogas.

5. When I see your Instagram gallery, I feel like the beginning of something, where are you going? To an expo? To a gallery?I don’t know. Most of the time I am just going home!

6. Besides the obvious that is to take good pictures, what advice do you give to people to achieve 35K and an average of 2500 likes per photo? It’s simple, like photos like yours and people will come check you out. Always be nice.

7. What applications do you use to edit your photos? Filterstorm, Snapseed, Hicon Pro, VSCO Cam, Luminance.

8. Which are the best forums for you? Tell us which tags should always be placed. I love #jj, Josh is a good guy. I currently like #monochrome and #bw_society. I just started my own forum and feature called @thepublicimage. Check it out at #publicimage.

5 ¿A dónde te lleva instagram? ¿Qué pretendes con tu galería?No lo se. La mayor parte del tiempo solo estoy yendo a casa.

6. Además de lo obvio que es tomar buenas fotos ¿Qué consejos le das a la gente para alcanzar 35K y un promedio de 2500 likes por fotos?Es sencillo, si a la gente les gustan tus fotos, buscarán tu trabajo. Se siempre amable.

CARACAS: Living in Caracas is living with fury, a city that is violent and scary, but at the same time full of joy and passion. A city that forces us to live in a traffic jam, around litter, zinc roofs, broken streets and huge malls. It’s the town with more McDonald’s per capita in Latin America. A city in revolution, it builds itself everyday, it changes, a city where there’s blood and heart, where millions of citizens overcome daily adversities, a city full of hope for a better life, where we all dream of a scotch or beer on Friday night, hoping that the bonus that we receive at work is enough to buy a flat screen tv, hoping to win the lottery or to build a better city. Caracas: love and hate. A powerful city with green and gray. Caracas my city.

CARACAS: Vivir en Caracas es vivir con furia, una ciudad que nos violenta y da miedo, pero que al mismo tiempo esta llena de alegría y pasión. Una ciudad que nos obliga a vivir en el tráfico, la basura, el zinc, la calle rota, los centros comerciales, la ciudad con más McDonald’s per capita de latinoamérica. Darko Labor is an impulsive, anxious and affectionate Croatian journalist, who spends a lot of time on Instagram, searching for the inspiration that allows him to create a good picture. He’s fond of many real photographers but he’s not inspired by them, at least not in a way that he can "copy’’ their style, he’s just not "that pretentious’’. When it comes to Instagram, he tries to upload two photos per day.
