Thanks to everyone who came to support us last week at Forest Green Rovers, and also those on Tuesday night who saw us progress again in the Leasing.com Trophy. Both games gave us welcome wins and showed the true character of our group.

Looking back to last Saturday, to say I was disappointed to end up with nine players on the pitch at the end would be an understatement. Considering our very good disciplinary record, and the competitive but good nature of the game in general, it put us up against it at 2 -1 ahead. The focus and spirit then showed by our players was something else, and I thought the final whistle was a moment that strengthens that bond between the team and fans.

On Tuesday we showed the quality of our squad when making eight changes and going on to beat a League One team after going behind early on. The quality of the winning goal was superb and again that determination to win the game shone through when limiting the opposition to no shots on target in the second half.

That takes a big commitment from every single player and over those two games every one of them has set the

standard we need to maintain.

We still have plenty to play for this season and the introduction of our new players has shown we are as ambitious as ever. We must now show the mentality needed every single day to succeed, and this week can be a reference point for what is required to maximise our future opportunities.

Get behind your team again today and enjoy the game.

Up the Ammies!

Graham.

Welcome to The Peninsula Stadium everybody for what is our Derby Day fixture against Oldham Athletic.

The game sees us play Oldham for the second time this season, and it was only a few weeks ago we secured an emphatic 4-1 victory at Boundary Park.

We have had a great week on and off the field with new signings being added to continue our improvement, and two consecutive winning results against strong opposition in the league, winning away at Forest Green Rovers, and in the Leasing.com Trophy, where we progressed to the semi-finals in our first season in the competition with Tuesday’s win against Accrington Stanley.

The atmosphere is really upbeat, and we will be confident and looking repeat the result against Oldham today. It’s a good chance for us to record our third straight win, which we haven’t managed to do this season, and we must prove we can be consistent.

We felt great passion in the performance on Tuesday, and from the support we keep receiving it always gives the lads a big lift.

Let’s hope we can get you singing and more importantly enjoying another three points this afternoon.

See you at the ground,Hoges

Following Aston Villa’s recent defeat at Fulham in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup, Villa’s manager Dean Smith was reported as saying that the FA Cup had ‘lost its sparkle’. He said it was not top of their priorities (a comment repeated by Nigel Pearson, the Watford manager). Apparently, he thought alterations made to the competition by the football authorities were the reason the 40 teams playing in the third round had made a total of 223 changes to their line-ups.

That’s roughly an average of six changes per team. Eight clubs made nine or more changes and four teams actually made 10 or more changes. Not every team was in the running to be divisional champions, facing a fixture snarl up, or had European matches on the horizon, so why make so many unforced changes? If I had had the inclination, I would have trawled each club’s following league fixture to see how many of the ‘changes’ had performed well enough to be selected. I’m willing to bet I wouldn’t have found many.

Is it any wonder then that attendances were down by 30%? If we keep hearing and reading that the FA Cup ‘has lost its sparkle’ it’s sure to become a self-fulfilling prophecy. And if clubs, particularly the top teams, are going to continue to turn out their squad or fringe players things will only get worse.

You can tell I’m a traditionalist. The FA Cup has been a fantastic competition for well over 100 years, I don’t believe it’s outdated or ‘lost its sparkle’. Rather than the authorities I think it is the ‘elite’ clubs who carry the responsibility.

Attitudes drip down. When the Premier League teams decided it made football sense somehow to field ‘weakened’ teams in cup ties the idea filtered down. Here at Salford, managers did it when we were at North West Counties level.

In the last round I listened to the radio broadcast of the Liverpool-Everton tie while I was in the kitchen (I’d like to say I was preparing a family gourmet meal but in actual fact I was washing the dishes.). When the commentary finished, they moved on to what is referred to as the after match 606 phone-in programme. We had a presenter of the programme and an ex-footballer ‘pundit’.

As might be expected the opening calls centred on Everton’s performance and one caller suggested that rather than playing squad players in cup matches it would be better for them to play regularly in a reserve league akin to something like the Central League from years ago.

The pundit then made reference to the fact that some of the top clubs entered their Under-21s into a cup competition organised for the lower leagues, the name of which escaped him. He thought it might be the Johnstone Paint Trophy but was sure the programme’s production team would put him right if this was incorrect. This they rapidly did as he announced that the competition was called the Checkatrade Trophy!!!

If this is a national radio programme covering all levels of football shouldn’t someone who commentates regularly on the state of the game around the country know who the sponsor of a cup for 48 members of the Football League is?

And if, at that precise moment in time, he simply couldn’t bring Leasing.com to mind shouldn’t the production team who, one assumes, are supposed to keep abreast of what is going on in the game and who are privy to the regular publicity shots be aware of the sponsor’s name?

Maybe we’re not elite enough!

The Ammies qualified for the semi-final of the Leasing.com Trophy after coming from behind to win 2-1 against League One Accrington Stanley. There were eight changes to the

side, with Tom Elliott scoring the winner on his home debut.

Indeed when Elliott did have a chance, stabbing at a hoisted free-kick into the box in the 36th minute, he could only find Accy captain Seamus Conneely well positioned to clear from in front of goal.

Into stoppage time of the first half though, Callum Johnson was booked for a foul on Jake Jervis and Ibou Touray stepped up to take the central free-kick, 35-40 yards out. Despite scoring from a set piece on Saturday, the Gambian chose to lift the ball into the top of the area where Cameron Burgess offered the most physical presence and flicked a header goalwards. Josef Bursik had come to claim a ball he had little right to, and could only helplessly watch as the centre-back’s header pulled Salford level in good time. A second goal in two games in the competition for the man on loan from Scunthorpe United.

There were no changes in personnel or attitude for the second half, and Salford came out still the better side and deservedly took the lead on 50 minutes. A ball was cleared up the left by Craig Conway which Armstrong chased, and Sykes mis-judged. The Salford forward flicked the pass over the defender and charged past before crossing into the middle where Elliott arrived and hit a thumping shot into the left-hand post to give Salford the lead for the first time in the game.

John Coleman’s side had a similar pattern in their game at Fleetwood Town in the previous round, and equalised in the last minute before winning on penalties, but despite their best efforts there was no way past and no equaliser this time. Shortly after Elliott’s goal, the forward had an effort from outside the area blocked and the re-bound dropped to Offrande Zanzala who broke a long way forward before having a narrow-angled shot blocked. 10 minutes later, goalkeeper Bursik came forward to take a free-kick from right-of-centre and 25 yards out, but he whipped it wide.

Jake Jervis had a brilliant chance to put the tie beyond doubt in the 73rd minute but headed a cross down and wide of the near post, then in the 86th minute Finley again cut in from the left and advanced to shoot, but this time it flew wide and to safety.

Salford City are within 90 minutes of a possible return to Wembley Stadium after our great run in the Leasing.com Trophy continued with a 2-1 win against Accrington Stanley on Tuesday night. The League One side are one of the only Football League clubs to have never played at Wembley, and they will remain a stranger to the national stadium after struggling to overcome a determined Salford side.

Graham Alexander made eight changes from Saturday’s win at Forest Green Rovers, including a debut for striker Tom Elliott alongside former Accy loanee Luke Armstrong, who has been brilliant for The Ammies so far in the competition.

Accrington brought a decent following with them for their first competitive game against Salford with both sides in the Football League, and they made a good start too as they sought to progress beyond the quarter-finals for the first time in the competition.

Dion Charles forced Chris Neal into a save in the sixth minute before Oscar Threlkeld had to block a shot from Joey Pritchard, who had cut into the penalty area off the left and shot from a tight angle. The corner was played short to Sam Finley whose cross evaded all in the area and bounced past the far post.

The former AFC Fylde midfielder has previous against Salford, scoring the opening goal in our 3-3 draw at Mill Farm in August 2016, and he repeated the trick here. There didn’t seem to be too much danger as he drifted in-field from the left-hand side, and upon reaching a more central position he opted to shoot from 30 yards with his drive deflecting up off Jack Baldwin, and looping over Neal. A rather unfortunate deflection for Salford it has to be said, but with no one closing Finley down he was invited to have a go and Accrington’s efforts in the opening 10 minutes were rewarded.

However after that they appeared to drop off half a yard, and Salford enjoyed a lot more possession but without much end product as the Accrington defensive duo of Mark Hughes and Ross Sykes kept Elliott and Armstrong at bay.

MatchReaction

Winning goalscorer Tom Elliott and Manager Graham Alexander react to Tuesday night’s win!

After missing out on a third club debut away at Forest Green Rovers on Saturday, Tom Elliott announced his arrival at Salford City with a bang by scoring the winner against Accrington Stanley to send The Ammies through to the Leasing.com Trophy semi-finals for the first time.

The striker hasn’t played a competitive senior game since August when he featured for Millwall in the Carabao Cup, but was handed a start by Graham Alexander and after a period settling into the game he became a real threat for a less physical Accrington side.

Composure, control, a forward presence and some pace to add as well and the 29-year-old could play an even more significant role in Salford’s season, but for now the 6’4 front man is pleased to be back out on the pitch and says he has settled well since moving back north from London.

“It was a very good big performance, obviously going 1-0 down as well we really wanted to come back from that and it just shows the character that we’ve got. I’ve only been in a couple of weeks now but the boys have welcomed me and it’s good for me get my first game.

“The boys have helped me a lot to be honest because that was my first game for probably about three or four months so legs were a bit shaky, so that’s why the boys helped me a lot because they did a lot more running to help me out!

“We had some terrific performances today, and we’re happy to just get to the next round.

“Obviously as a striker it’s always nice to get a goal, and especially on your home debut as well so that’s always nice, Luke’s done all the hard work and put it on a plate for me so I’ve just done what the Gaffer’s signed me to do.”

Elliott’s goal means Salford are 90 minutes away from a possible return to Wembley, but whoever is drawn in tonight’s semi-final draw (live on the EFL Highlights Show on Quest), the striker says it’s game-by-game and this afternoon’s game against Oldham Athletic must come first.

“It should be good, it’s another target for us to go for.

“Everybody wants to play at Wembley and it’s a special occasion, I’ve been there myself and I know a few of the

boys haven’t been there, but it would be a great occasion for everyone to go there and it would be a good medal for the team, but we’ve got to see who we get in the next round and take it from there.

“Obviously we’ve got to focus on the league on Saturday and just take it game-by-game.

“We’ve just won two hard games on the bounce, and it’s just about picking up momentum because the confidence is there and like I said there’s nothing like a winning feeling, as long as you get that train going.”

GRAHAM ALEXANDER

It’s the second time the Gaffer has reached the semi-final as a manager having guided Fleetwood Town to the penultimate stage in 2013-14, when it was a two-legged semi-final, but he added that just to reach Wembley isn’t the prize.

“Everyone wants to play at Wembley in finals, we’ve been fortunate enough to experience that ourselves as a club last year and like you say we’re one game away, but it’s one result and one game, like we said last season, defined our season so that’s how big single games can be.

“Whoever we play, we’ve still got to overcome very good opposition because anyone at this stage of the competition has won a lot of games to get here so we’ll go into it with the same attitudes and same ambitions as we have done in previous rounds.

“When you get to this stage everyone knows that the prize is there, but we’re still a couple of steps away.

“Even getting to Wembley isn’t the prize, it’s the competition so we’re a couple of steps away from that.”

Accrington, at the time 17th in League One, started the better side at The Peninsula Stadium and took the lead when Sam Finley’s deflected effort looped over Chris Neal, but Cameron Burgess equalised before half time to lay the platform for Elliott’s winner. It’s the first time that Salford have conceded in the competition, but the character and effort The Ammies showed pleased Alexander.

“The result is brilliant for us, like you say against a League One team, but I thought we didn’t start the game very well. I think we showed them too much respect, I didn’t think we went out there with the mentality to earn the right to play, we didn’t do that straight from minute one and we played the majority of the first 15-20 minutes in our half and the goal was coming in my eyes, even though they didn’t create many chances

“The goal just before half time was a bonus for us and we just had to start the second half in a better fashion, which we did with a fantastic goal and as the game wore on, more and more things were going against us. Unfortunately we couldn’t really get out of that defensive half but I can’t remember Chris Neal having to make too many saves so the defensive strength of the team when we were in the lead was excellent and you can see, the commitment of every player who went on that pitch for the club was superb and we’re glad we won the game.

There were eight changes to the side that took to the field against Forest Green Rovers last Saturday, including re-calls for Oscar Threlkeld, Liam Hogan, Luke Armstrong, Jack Baldwin, Joey Jones and Craig Conway, and the squad’s depth and character was clearly demonstrated which pleased the Gaffer.

“I say it many times, even after defeats, that the team spirit and the character of the group is excellent, I think we’ve got some real good professionals and characters in there.

“We don’t always win and sometimes we let ourselves down but it’s never through a dishonesty in the group, they’re really honest with themselves, each other, and when we are truthful with them they understand why and that’s because we want to be better, so I believe in the strength of the group and when we do make the changes - like we have done in all the rounds in this competition - they’ve performed and won the games so that’s a healthy mentality, atmosphere and environment to have at the club, but we have to work exceptionally hard to make sure it stays like that.

“We want to win games and when we’re representing our club we have an obligation to put everything into it to win, so that won’t change no matter what competition we play in and that’s what we’re seeing so far,.

“When the next round comes round we’ll give it our best shot to win the game, but Saturday will be the same, we’ll go into that game trying to win.

“If it’s the league, then we go into the next round of this, it doesn’t really matter, it’s a game that we want to win for our club, for ourselves to feel good about ourselves, and we sort of needed reminding of that at half time, what we were playing for, and I thought the boys showed that in abundance in the second half.”

New boy Elliott might have scored the winning goal, but the Gaffer is looking forward to the all-round impact he can continue to make and shared his hope for the front man.

“He’s, like I said with Michael [O’Connor] on Saturday, they’ve only been in a week and training’s been limited so we’re getting him up to speed physically, that’s why he didn’t start at the weekend, we thought tonight was a good opportunity for him.

“We knew he wouldn’t finish the game but I thought he grew into the game, he grew into what was expected of him from the team and from ourselves and you can see his physical power, he’s a real asset, but you saw with the finish that he’s got good quality as well.

“We’ve got to understand that we can’t just lump balls up to him with no quality, we actually can play balls into his feet, drop them into his chest because he’s got good feet, he’s got good control and that was shown in the finish; I thought it was real good composure, great play from Luke as well, spotting him through the full back, and I think it was a real, valid winning goal.”

He grew into what was expected of him from the team and from ourselves, and you can see his physical power, he’s a real asset, but you saw with the finish that he’s got good quality as well.“ ”

If only all our motorway journeys could be as easy and as hassle free as our drive over to North East Lincolnshire for our New Year’s Day fixture against Grimsby Town. As I’m sure everyone knows – because it’s a perennial quiz question – Grimsby have actually played down the road in nearby Cleethorpes since the late 1800s. Cleethorpes itself is represented by Cleethorpes Town in the Bet Victor Northern Premier South East Division.

If you have never been to a Grimsby Town game but are planning a visit, all I can advise is – take a coat! It was cold!!! But then the Humber Estuary and the North Sea are within shouting distance of the main stand.

The location of Blundell Park, home of Grimsby Town for over a hundred years, reminded me of Marine’s ground on Merseyside. Both are hemmed in by surrounding houses with back gardens virtually coming up to the ground perimeter. Part of the old main stand at Grimsby dates back to 1901. At one time Grimsby was reckoned to have the biggest fishing fleet anywhere in the world but like so many areas around the country the area’s major employer has suffered over the years. Nonetheless the local fish (and chips) served up at lunch was amongst the best I’ve ever tasted.

With three good results against Bradford City, Crewe Alexandra and Oldham Athletic under our belt it’s fair to say I was looking forward to another good performance, particularly as The Mariners were winless since the end of September. Pre-match the new Mariners manager was introduced to the crowd. As he took his place in the main stand the home support began chanting “Ian Holloway’s black and white army.” Ever the modest individual he joined in with the chant!

The arrival of a new manager mid-season can bring about an instant improvement in a team’s performance and whether this was the case or not Grimsby certainly prevented Salford from getting into any sort of rhythm and for most of the 90 minutes both teams struggled to create worthwhile opportunities. Adam Rooney had a couple of decent half chances early in the opening period but the first he miscued and the second, a header, was pushed away by the keeper. The first half ended with both sides basically cancelling each other out.

After the break the home side had the better of the exchanges but The Ammies always looked promising on the break. From a Richie Towell free kick the ball just eluded Cameron Burgess’s head and dropped nicely into the arms of home keeper. With 10 minutes remaining on the clock Brandon Thomas-Asante was presented with an opportunity to make himself a hero once again with the travelling support. A neat move involving Mani Dieseruvwe, Craig Conway and Towell ended with the ball at Thomas-Asante’s feet but from eight yards out his shot clipped the base of the post and the ball was cleared. Three minutes later Salford were down and out. Ahkeem Rose was given too much time to set himself up for a shot and whilst not hit with any great strength the ball found its way low down into Chris Neal’s net at his left-hand post.

The attendance was 4,455 (with 138 having made the trip over from Salford). A Salford connection? Former Ammies striker Tony Caldwell had a brief stint with The Mariners towards the end of the 1980s and Matt Green who had a short spell at the Peninsula Stadium is now at Blundell Park. So, a disappointing start to the New Year but plenty of football left to be played.

or Cleethorpes, for a decent portion of fish and chips.

You know those things that you find a bit of nuisance at the time, but miss when they’re gone? One of mine is the Frank Hannah Manchester Premier Cup, contested by non-league sides in the Greater Manchester area. This is the first season for some time that Salford City haven’t been taking part, so on Wednesday 15th January myself and Steve Ball ventured out to watch Irlam’s quarter-final tie versus Maine Road.

Storm Brendan had rather inconsiderately caused the game to be postponed on the Tuesday evening, but with remarkable organisational dexterity, it was re-arranged for just 24 hours later.

The Silver Street playing surface had recovered from its waterlogging and what would turn out to be a good game of football got underway. Irlam had already created a handful of chances before a Jordan Southworth effort came back off the woodwork and the home side would boss the rest of the first half without getting the goal they deserved.

It was more of the same after the break but 11 minutes after the restart Marcus Perry got clear of the Maine Road defence before planting a finish past William O’Carroll. After working so hard to edge ahead Irlam promptly donated an equaliser to their visitors about a minute later. Home keeper Lee White slipped, allowing a gleeful Jack Coop to level the scores.

The game became pretty even for a while after that, but Irlam, a division higher than their opponents, finished strongly. Substitute Mwiya Malumo cut in from the left before finding the net with a well struck 75th minute shot. Those floodgates finally opened and five minutes from time Jordan Icely was fouled inside the box, with Karl Cassell scoring from the spot.

Maine Road’s MPC dream was slipping away and any lingering doubts were dispelled in the last minute as Meredith swung in a corner for Cassell to head home the fourth.

4-1 to Irlam then, and with the other three Quarter-Final ties settled last month, Michael Dodd’s team travel to FC United of Manchester for the semi-final (February 3rd). The following evening Trafford entertain Droylsden in the other semi. With the Ammies not in midweek action, why not

reacquaint yourself with Greater Manchester’s senior non-league competition?

The Ammies currently have no less than 11 players out on loan at non-league clubs. Josh Askew was on the scoresheet for Curzon Ashton last weeked, scoring his first Nash goal as Alfreton Town were beaten 4-0. Kieran Glynn has been recalled from his loan at Southport, moving to the opposite coast for the rest of the season with Scarborough Athletic.

Salford CityNews

Newsquest has launched a new weekly print title in Salford which it promises will “fly the flag for residents”.

Salford City News is a new title that launched yesterday in print as a weekly newspaper with the cover price of 80p, and online at salfordcitynews.co.uk.

Karl Holbrook, Newsquest Regional Group Editor for Lancashire and Greater Manchester, said:

“Salford is an amazing place, full of history and culture. But there is a real sense on the ground that Salford is often ignored next to its louder sibling across the River Irwell.

“We think this is a crying shame. Salford deserves to have its own dedicated newspaper flying the flag for its residents and I am absolutely determined to bring the needs and concerns of real ‘Salfordians’ into the light with this exciting launch.

“We believe there is a sustainable publishing future in Salford as a weekly print brand and as the daily online provider of the best local content.

The newspaper launched yesterday and will bring dedicated coverage of the City of Salford for residents, including more in-depth coverage of ourselves and Salford Red Devils, plus

other sports and events in the City.

“We are recruiting talented local reporters, who know and love Salford, and will ensure this great community remains at the heart of what we do.

“Salford City News will do everything it can to be the beating heart of this great community and we hope readers and advertisers join us and support this exciting launch.”

Salford City News will be available to buy every Friday, and this afternoon they are giving away free copies after the game to home fans as they leave the stadium!

We are looking forward to working with the paper to bring increased, more regular print coverage and hope that we can grow together, working with each other and connecting sport across Salford.

In addition we will bring more Salford news into the match day programme to make it a more community-focused publication as well as the informative football souvenir it is intended as.

If you take a look at the visiting fans today, no doubt you will notice a flag adorned with the name of ‘Ernie Cooksey’.

This flag is a replacement for the original flag which was stolen when Oldham Athletic fans were assaulted in Seville in 2009 at the Spain v England friendly international match. The replacement flag was purchased from donations made by Latics supporters.

The original flag belonged to a group of Oldham Athletic fans, who had it made in memory of one of their former players, who died tragically in July 2008 at the age of 28.

Ernie was a trainee at Colchester United and then played

non-league football at Crawley Town and Chesham United. His big break came in 2003 when Oldham Athletic gave him the opportunity to turn professional, and he went on to play for Rochdale, Boston United and Grays Athletic.

Ernie died less than a month before the birth of his only child, after contracting Malignant Melanoma, a severe form of skin cancer which is diagnosed in over 8,000 people in the UK each year.

The fans have taken the flag to every Oldham game since the start of the 2008-09 season and a number of other events, both in memory of a player who never gave less than 100%, and also to promote the fight against this cancer which can kill even the fittest of young people.

The club founded in 1895 was Pine Villa FC, but in 1899 became Oldham Athletic after moving into the ground of local rivals Oldham County, who had folded.

Oldham immediately operated as a professional team and played in the Lancashire Combination and the Lancashire League. In 1907-08 they were accepted into the Football League, and after three years in the Second Division won promotion to the First Division. They finished fourth in 1912-13 as well as reaching the FA Cup semi-final, and in 1914-15 The Latics missed out on the First Division title by a point.

Following the conclusion of the First World War, Oldham struggled to reach the same levels that they had before and in 1923 were relegated to the Second Division. The closest to a top-flight return they managed was in 1929-30 when they finished third, two points behind Chelsea, and after finishing 21st in 1934-35 Oldham were relegated to the Third Division North. Seventh was the lowest The Latics finished before the outbreak of the Second World War again halted League football, and Oldham played in the war-time Northern League until 1946 using mainly guest players.

George Hardwick was appointed as player-manager in November 1950 after a fee was paid to Middlesbrough for his services, but it paid some dividends for the club as attendances increased. The former England captain took Oldham to fourth in his first full season in charge, then went one better by delivering the title in 1952-53 and returning

Oldham to the Second Division. However the following season ended with relegation in last place, with Oldham finishing 10th in their first season back in the third tier which led to Hardwick resigning in 1955.

In 1958-59 a 15th place finish meant Oldham were founder members of the newly formed Fourth Division, and in their first season they finished 23rd which meant they had to apply for re-election. That was successful as the league chose to drop Gateshead in favour of Peterborough United.

When Ken Bates arrived at the club in the early 1960s the club’s fortunes began to turn, and with Jack Rowley as manager Oldham were promoted in 1962-63 and although Rowley left they maintained their status as a third tier club until 1968-69. Rowley had returned that season, but couldn’t save the club from relegation and midway through the 1969-70 season both he and Bates left.

Next in the managerial hotseat was Jimmy Frizzell, a Scottish defender who became player-manager and in 1970-71 he led Oldham to third and promotion back to the Third Division. Frizzell didn’t stop there though and after mid-table and fourth place finishes The Latics won the Third Division in 1973-74 and Frizzell did a job in establishing Oldham as a Second Division team before Joe Royle was appointed in June 1982.

Royle continued the job Frizzell has started and finished

seventh in his first season in charge, and in 1986-87 took Oldham to the play-offs where they lost to Leeds United. In 1989-90 The Latics reached the final of the League Cup, losing 1-0 to Nottingham Forest at Wembley, but the following season they won the Second Division and earned promotion back to the First Division for the first time in 68 years. In 1992-93 they were founder members of the Premier League and survived the first season on goal difference, finishing 19th with 49 points. However the next season Oldham were relegated after amassing 40 points, then in November 1994 Royle left to take over at Everton.

Graeme Sharp took over but couldn’t make Oldham contenders to return to the top flight, and at the end of 1996-97 Oldham dropped into the third tier, now called Division Two. Ian Dowie gave Oldham their best shot at promotion in 2002-03 when they finished fifth and in the play-offs, but on aggregate they lost in the semi-finals to QPR. Further play-off heartbreak followed in 2006-07 when Blackpool won 5-2 on aggregate.

Managerial changes became quite frequent at Boundary Park, including a short second spell for Royle with the likes of Martin Gray - who Salford fans might remember from Darlington and York City - Paul Dickov and Lee Johnson all having terms as boss. An ownership change also came in January 2018 as Abdallah Lemsagam agreed a deal to purchase the club but in May 2018, Oldham were relegated to League Two.

Oldham were hoping that the arrival of Laurent Banide in the summer would bring in a term of consistency and settlement, but it hasn’t turned out that way. In their first season back in the fourth division since 1970-71 they went through four managers, and this second season they are on their second manager after brining Dino Maamria in.

Without a league win up to that point, it was put right immediately by former Stevenage boss Maamria although the only time he has managed back-to-back wins was before Oldham’s current six-game winless run.

In January he has been busy already trying to make his own mark on the squad he inherited, and The Latics have done some good business in extending the loan of Jonny Smith, signing Danny Rowe from AFC Fylde, and taking Carl Piergianni and Mani Dieseruvwe on loan from ourselves (although both are ineligible this afternoon, and Mani picked up a knock on his debut).

Goals have been in limited supply this season, averaging just under one per game, but most games have been tight affairs which is demonstrated by a high number of draws, including the last three. The addition of Rowe in particular will be interesting to see if he can continue his goalscoring exploits which have served Fylde so well in recent seasons.

This will be the first competitive meeting between the sides at The Peninsula Stadium, with the reverse fixture just under four weeks ago (yes that’s all it’s been!) ending in a 4-1 win courtesy of braces from Jake Jervis and Brandon Thomas-Asante, while Desire Segbe-Azankpo netted a consolation for Oldham.

However there are a number of common connections between the clubs; Salford co-owner Paul Scholes is a Latics fan and had a spell in charge last season; Adam Rooney scored four goals in 24 appearances in the 2013-14 season before moving to Aberdeen; Cameron Burgess also played for Oldham on loan in 2016-17; Club Secretary Andy Giblin is a fervent Latics supporter; and Goalkeeper Coach Carlo Nash worked at Oldham with former Ammies midfielder and Latics manager Richie Wellens.

DID YOU KNOW?

The current crest was introduced in 2011, and was designed by Latics fan Ric Dennis. The gold outline is intended to represent the club’s prestige and history, while the owl has been an associated figure with Oldham for a long time.

Tunisian Maamria became Oldham’s first non-European manager when he joined the club in September, shortly after leaving Stevenage where he had spent 18 months.

Last season he took The Boro to 10th in League Two, finishing just a point outside the play-offs after a run of five wins in the final six matches. However three draws and four defeats in the opening seven games of the campaign left Stevenage second-bottom and resulted in Maamria being sacked. 10 days later, he was in charge at Boundary Park.

The former forward started his career in Tunisia with AS Marsa and had a spell with CO Transports before leaving in 1995, and he first arrived in England in 1996 when he was offered a trial at Burnley. Maamria signed a short-term contract with the club but never made an appearance after breaking a leg and he joined Glentoran in the IFA Premiership.

Doncaster Rovers signed Maamria in August 1998, and in the 1999-2000 season he was top scorer although he was subsequently transfer listed then released in June 2000, and a proposed move to Cardiff City didn’t materialise.

No stranger to the North West of England, Maamria played in non-league for Southport and Leigh RMI alongside working as a coach at Burnley. 26 goals in 28 appearances for Leigh encouraged then-Conference side Stevenage to cough up a five-figure fee in February 2003, although during the summer Maamria moved to the US to play for Charleston Battery.

It was a move that didn’t quite work out and he returned to Stevenage in September 2003, where he played for the next three seasons before a second spell at Southport and a move to Rushden & Diamonds.

The next season he moved to Northwich Victoria, then in the Conference, and in October 2007 he was made caretaker manager. At the time, Vics were bottom of the league, 15 points from safety and had recently entered into administration. After the takeover was completed, Maamria was appointed permanently and having guiding the club to safety with a game to spare he was named as the Manager of the Season for 2007-08.

When he left Northwich, Maamria returned to Stevenage where he was a coach in their back-to-back promotions from the Conference to League One, and after that he continued to work with Graham Westley at Preston North End, Newport County, and another spell at Stevenage plus a stint as Southport manager in 2015-16.

In October 2017, Maamria took charge of Nuneaton, who were threatened by relegation in the National League North, but he turned them around to play-off contenders before leaving in March 2018 for Stevenage.

Gary WoodsSigned: June 2019

The 29-year-old signed for Oldham in the summer after three seasons at Hamilton Academical in the SPL. After starting his youth career at Cambridge United, he moved to Manchester United who he left in 2009 for Doncaster Rovers on a free transfer. He became first choice in 2012-13 as Rovers were relegated from the Championship, but won the League One title the following season.

01 Zeus De La PazSigned: August 2019

Curaçaoan keeper De La Paz graduated through the PSV Eindhoven academy, playing for The Netherlands at Under-16 and Under-18 level before choosing Curaçao at senior level. He originally signed for Oldham in January 2018, having previously had spells with Nuneaton Borough and Cincinnati Dutch Lions, but re-signed in the summer after returning from the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

20

Zak MillsSigned: June 2019

Right-back Mills signed in the summer after a spell with Morecambe last season where he scooped three Player of the Year awards. The 27-year-old had spells with Histon and Boston United - alongside Carl Piergianni - before moving to Grimsby Town in 2016 where he spent two years and made 58 appearances following their return to League Two. 06 Tomas EgertSigned: August 2019

Czech defender Egert signed in the summer after a season out with an ACL injury. His previous club had been Burton Albion, and as he trialled for a new club for 2018-19 after his release he ruptured it. Prior to his spell at Burton, the 25-year-old had various spells in the Czech Republic after playing for Bohemians 1905 and Slovan Liberec, and has worked on a degree in Sport Management.

29

The 22-year-old came through the Nottingham Forest academy and had loan spells at Mansfield Town in 2016-17 and Forest Green Rovers in 2017-18 before moving to Oldham on loan last January. He has represented Scotland from Under-17 to Under-21 level.

03

Tom HamerSigned: Academy Graduate

The defender was signed up in 2015 having played grassroots football and made his debut in an EFL Trophy game in January 2018. The 20-year-old can operate in the middle or as a right-back, and made a handful of further appearances before becoming more regular last season with 35 games in all competitions, scoring twice. This season he has already matched that games tally.

10

David JonesSigned: November 2019

35-year-old midfielder Jones signed a deal in November after leaving Sheffield Wednesday in the summer. The former Manchester United youngster had a loan spell at Preston North End before a loan at Derby County was made permanent. 22Dylan FageSigned: July 2019

Another French midfielder, Fage signed a two-year deal at Oldham in the summer from Auxerre II. The 20-year-old had been at the club for three years, and made 25 appearances. 18

Scott WilsonSigned: July 2019

The 27-year-old striker joined Oldham on a free transfer from Macclesfield Town, where he was top scorer for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons and won promotion back to the Football League with Macc. That included 11 goals in his first Football League season as Sol Campbell helped the Moss Rose side to survival. He has previously played for the likes of Gloucester City and Weston-Super-Mare.

16

After being released by United in the summer the 21-year-old joined New Mills last November but only made one appearance and has now been given another chance with The Latics.

55 Danny RoweSigned: January 2020

Probably doesn’t need much introduction, but Rowe joined Oldham for an undisclosed fee from AFC Fylde who he left after 192 goals in 293 appearances. The 30-year-old has been the Player of the Year for the National League in the last two seasons, and the National League North the year before, mainly thanks to his incredible goals haul. Formerly with Manchester United, Fleetwood, Stockport and Lincoln.

56

Mohamed SyllaSigned: January 2019

Box-to-box central midfielder Sylla signed for Oldham on an 18-month contract from French third-tier side Entente SSG. The 26-year-old made over 100 appearances for the club in his time there, where he was part of the youth set up, and the Frenchman has become a regular in the middle for Oldham, scoring his first goal in the 2-1 win at Morecambe on Boxing Day.

24

Chris McCannSigned: October 2019

Experienced midfielder McCann signed a short-term deal in October, months after leaving DC United in the MLS. A former team-mate of Graham Alexander at Burnley, where the pair won promotion to the Premier League, McCann made over 250 appearances at the club where he came through the academy before spells with Wigan Athletic and Atlanta United preceded his moved to Washington.

25

Gevaro NepomucenoSigned: September 2017

An international team mate of Zeus De La Paz for Curaçao, winger Nepomuceno joined Latics in 2017 and has become a fans’ favourite at Boundary Park. Like the keeper, he also started his career in The Netherlands with FC Den Bosch and has had spells in Romania and Portugal before moving to England, then after signing a contract extension in the summer he had a loan spell at Chesterfield.

11

Johan Branger-EngoneSigned: July 2018

The winger was signed by Frankie Bunn in preparation for the 2018-19 season, joining an English side for the first time from FC Dieppe where he scored 11 goals in 26 game. A graduate of the Auxerre academy, the 26-year-old netted five goals in 38 appearances last season as well as managing seven assists. Internationally he has represented Gabon once in 2012.

opposition viewWe spoke to Oldham Athletic supporter and journalist

Aaron Diskin about supporting Latics!

What was your first Oldham game?Oldham vs Millwall in 2008-09.

Why do you support Oldham?Through my Dad, as he was born on Boundary Park Way.

What is your most memorable Oldham game?Oldham 3-2 Liverpool in the FA Cup Third Round

What is your favourite Oldham kit?The tangerine away kit from the 2007-08 season.

Who is your Oldham hero, past or present?Peter Clarke, I just think he is the true definition of a leader! He would always put everything he had in for the shirt, but he also scored some vital goals for us.

What are your thoughts on the season so far? It’s not been the best season for us really, it’s getting a little better but we’re better off trying to re-focus our attention to next season...

What player(s) should we watch out for?Our little wing rocket Jonny Smith, or new signing Danny Rowe.

Are you looking forward to coming to Salford?Yeah it will be nice to be back at Moor Lane, and supporting my boys for today!

Match Prediction?Salford City 1-2 Oldham Athletic

MatchREportThe Lionesses qualified for the next round of the Argyle Cup with a 2-1 win against Penrith AFC Ladies, courtesy

of Laura Tobin’s late winner.

vs. Penrith AFC LadiesArgyle CupPartington Sports Village19/01/20, 14:00

Penrith, knocked out by winners FC United of Manchester in the quarter-final last season, hoped to use the equaliser as momentum to kick-start their afternoon but a response never really formulated and a couple of minutes later Beth Tattersall was brought down as she accelerated away from her marker. Abby Bennett stepped up to take the free-kick from 35 yards, right of centre, and we’ve seen her score from this distance, range and angle but on this occasion Jones gathered the dropping shot.

Duckworth was next to have a go for the Lionesses towards the end of the first half, eager to impress in her first start of the season, but she hit a low shot too much across the face of goal. Her influence on the game increased in the second half as she turned near-provider on a couple of occasions; the first for Tobin which the striker passed on to Tattersall, then to Bennett before a shot was charged down; and then for Lawson with a higher cross which Jones collected first.

The Lionesses were well on top in terms of possession and territory, but Jones wasn’t being tested enough and at the other end they were almost caught out in the 62nd minute. A ball up the right seemed over hit, but as Jess Duke came out of her area it was obvious she may have misjudged as English nipped in first and turned to face goal. Somehow, with a good angle and no covering defenders, she missed the target and more importantly a golden chance. It was the nearest Penrith had been to the Salford goal since scoring, and the closest they came before the end.

Lawson wasn’t having much more luck at the other end as Jones dealt with a couple of decent chances for the forward from the edge of the area, but it was becoming relentless pressure from Salford and turning into a matter of time. That looked set to continue in the 84th minute when Bennett struck the post with a dipping shot, but a miscued clearance by Penrith allowed Tobin to dart in and instinctively finish past Jones to secure the win.

Tattersall could have added more gloss to the scoreline as she broke forward on the right, only to fire wide past the oncoming Penrith ‘keeper.

In the next round the Lionesses travel to Penwortham Town Ladies, also of the NWWRFL Division One North.

This competition is for teams in all three of the NWWRFL’s leagues and after the disappointment of being knocked out of the Manchester FA Women’s Challenge Cup at the first stage, this is another opportunity for silverware and a chance to, possibly at one stage, test ourselves against teams from the level above.

While the team’s vision might be clear, the weather on Sunday was anything but as a stubborn fog lumbered over the region, but this wasn’t to be a ‘mist’ opportunity. Penrith were competing in the Premier Division last season, and in the Division One North they are just two points off top with 31 points from 13 games, so a very similar record to our 31 points from 12 in Division One South. However the 2-1 result is all that was close in reality, and the clearest thing about the afternoon was the Lionesses’ dominance.

Due to injuries and absences there were just 12 players named but the team was a strong one and started on the front foot. Within three minutes Molly Etchells had Michelle Jones scrambling after a cross required pushing away from underneath the crossbar.

Laura Tobin was next to test the Penrith stopper, picking up possession around the edge of the area from a blocked Phoebe Duckworth shot and aiming a low effort to the bottom left hand corner, however Jones threw herself low to push the shot around the post and the resulting corner was cleared.

Maybe the next corner shouldn’t have been awarded, at least from a Penrith point of view, after Etchells was believed to be offside when possession came to her high on the right, but with no whistle the winger continued play and a corner was the eventual result. Jess Lawson whipped a cross in from the right, and Charlie Shaw arrived at the back post to power a header down across goal to open both the scoring and her Lionesses account.

It was a deserved lead, but by the quarter hour mark the visitors were back in the game. They themselves won a corner and after a first header bounced off the crossbar, Jodie English arrived to head the dropping ball over the line despite the best efforts of Salford to prevent it going in, and the wait for a clean sheet continues.

League Tworound-up

As for the league table, Swindon Town remain top of the pile but only on goal difference after losing away at Newport County last weekend.

Michael Flynn’s side have turned a corner in 2020 and are now unbeaten in four league games, following a 10-game winless run that saw them plummet down the table. Josh Sheehan gave The Exiles a perfect start at Rodney Parade before another early goal in the second half from Jamille Matt secured the three points against the leaders, and with at least two games in hand over some of the sides above them they are still within touching distance of the play-offs.

Swindon, meanwhile, have now got to cope with the loss or second top scorer Jerry Yates who has been re-called from his loan by parent club Rotherham United, in addition to Eoin Doyle being re-called by Bradford City. Their second loss in five games has allowed in-form Exeter City to catch them at the summit, and Matt Taylor’s side have a game in hand too.

A narrow 1-0 win at Grimsby Town thanks to a solo Nicky Law effort means The Grecians could be in pole position by the end of the weekend, or once they’ve played their game in hand which is against Crewe Alexandra at the start of March. That won’t be a walk in the park so they can’t count on banking the points, and Exeter are still fighting in the Leasing.com Trophy after beating Stevenage 3-0 on Tuesday night so alongside us they will be in tonight’s draw.

Crewe are back up into the automatic promotion places after four points from six in the last week. On Saturday Perry Ng ended his wait for a haircut by scoring the winner against Cheltenham Town, but it took a 95th minute equalised from Callum Ainley to steal a point from Macclesfield Town on Tuesday night. Former Ammie Michael Nottingham started both of those games after joining on loan from Blackpool for the rest of the season.

As for Cheltenham, they went into last weekend in third but are now down to eighth after that defeat and results for the teams around them. It was so tight in the play-offs with third to seventh all on 44 points going into last weekend; now just four points separate third to ninth and behind that the next four teams all won so there’s all to play for.

Plymouth Argyle and Bradford, two of the pre-season favourites, are up a place each. Argyle have won three in a row after seeing off Mansfield Town, who continue to struggle under new manager Graham Coughlan, and Ryan Lowe’s side will be eyeing an automatic promotion place with their game(s) in hand over the top three. Bradford are without a win in four, albeit drawing three of those, but they are yet to get Eoin Doyle scoring to the same level he managed at Swindon. They squandered a two-goal lead against Scunthorpe United before drawing 0-0 with Colchester United on Tuesday, who move up into the play-offs with that one point.

Northampton are also into the play-offs as they continue their good run, and on the foundation of a 4-1 win against Morecambe they led 1-0 at Leyton Orient on Tuesday - a result which would have put them into third - but conceded a penalty in the 85th minute which means they are sixth. Still Keith Curle’s side look good with just the league to focus on, and they were unbeaten in six games going into last night’s Emirates FA Cup Fourth Round tie with Derby County.

Ahead of us still are Port Vale and Walsall who kept their distance with wins against Leyton Orient and Crawley respectively last weekend. Both have three wins in their last five games in pursuit of a play-off place, and Walsall have added winger Jack Nolan from Reading and midfielder Nathan Sheron on loan from Fleetwood Town to their squad. In addition Wes McDonald has signed an extended deal with the club having become central to their squad this season.

Further down, Cambridge United are struggling with four defeats on the bounce and without a goal in three, and they were stunned on Saturday when Stevenage put four past them at The Abbey Stadium. Graham Westley said last week that it’s not beyond the possibilities for Stevenage to reach The Championship in the future and at the time it received some mixed reaction, but he will be encouraged by his side’s performance that takes them off bottom. Carlisle United are hovering not far above, winless in three and throwing away a 1-0 lead at Oldham Athletic last weekend.

It’ll be interesting to see who changes what in the last week of the transfer window...

There has been some player movement in January, as well as a couple of fixtures caught up on this week for teams not

involved in the Leasing.com Trophy.

CRAWLEY TOWN vs GRIMSBY TOWN

Two teams who both have relatively new managers and looked to be turning a corner in terms of form until defeats last weekend. Grimsby are perhaps the better placed of the two with their two games in hand which, if they win both, would put them nine points off the play-offs, but this is a must win for them if they have serious promotion ambitions. Crawley are undefeated in four at home, and Grimsby are unbeaten in four away...

EXETER CITY vs COLCHESTER UNITED

Both teams are unbeaten in their last 10 league games; Exeter have seven wins and three draws while Colchester have won six and drawn four. Matt Taylor’s side are behind leaders Swindon on goal difference and with a game in hand, and while Richie Wellens figures out how to replace Eoin Doyle this is a big chance for Exeter to take the lead...

LEYTON ORIENT vs NEWPORT COUNTY

The Exiles are making their way back up the table with two wins in a row now, after that horrendous run. The O’s though are without a league win since before Christmas.
