WHAT The task was to design an apartment house with a various size of apartments on an emphasis on bigger apartments for families or more exclusive apartments. The shared wirewall

made it even more important for the building to fit with the neighbouring new apartment block.

WHERE The plot is situated in a historical residential area Kadriorg, in Tallinn city centre. Residing alongside a wooden milieu area, stone apartment houses on the other side.

RESULT By combining the main elements that surround the site and a new iconic dwelling is designed. The form is inspired from the old wooden houses and gable roofs. The height of the

building climbs from 5th floor to only one. On materials on the contrary are temporary. The apartment house folds towards the private inner yard. The parking is situated on the

underground level. Apartments are planned through two floors and also through the house to offer the habitats the best views and sufficient sunlight. The skylights make the flats even

better lit. Many apartments have loggias and a few also a roof terrace. The main concept of the building was to connect, value and enrich the environment of the area.

INPUT The idea of the folding form and to interact with the neighbouring buildings was my input but later on we developped everything together, mirroring eachothers thoughts and ideas.

INTERIOR DESIGN for an apartment_7th semester

WHAT The assignment was to design the interiors for an apartment in a house created on a previous

semester.

WHERE An exclusive apartment on one floor throughout the house with a roof terrace.

RESULT The dominant in the quarters is the dramatically sloping seiling which also makes it more complicated.

The plan is open and forms a row of different habitation functions. The materials and furniture is mostly simple

with some accents leaving the foreplan to the essence of the room. The private roof terrace is a room in the

open air on the warmer season.

TALLINN BEACHPROMENADE PUBLIC SPACE PLANNING IN THE SECTION OF NOBLESSNERI KALARANNA_2011 spring

WHAT: The planning encompasses Tallinn beach promenade in the section from Kalaranna to Noblessner and borders with the city centre and Kalamaja naberhood. The project takes onthe issue of the seaside, which is one of the most important areas in the development of the city. Tallinns seafront is long and alternating, but for the reasons mostly deriving from thehistory, the seaside areas are under developped and not reconstructed. The city is not opened to the sea and the situation has not changed in twenty years which have passed fromthe soviet regime, when the seaside was closed.

KUS: The area from Kalasadam ('Fishport') pool to Noblessner docks is the most perspective and closest to the city center and Old Town.

IDEE: The original question was, how to bring people from the city centre and Kalamaja ('Fishhouse') region to the seaside and to turn the beachpromenade into an atractive place. Theheart of the city needs to be connected to the sea. The seaside areas conseal an enormous potential, which is waiting to be revealed. Todays visions and detail plannings impose thatthe different parts of the promenade must be settled with an architectural competitions. But since the sections are fragmented between different detail plannings, a threat remains, that a consistent and coherent public space will not generate. The given section holds special importance welcoming the arrivals to the city and to the city centre. It is important to seethe possibilities in the area as a recreational place, of which is a lack of in Norhen-Tallinn area. There are several historically and culturally important buildings by the promenade, manyvaluable functions and atractive views to the city and the sea. The main idea of the project comes from Jüri Lotmans semisphere theory, which claims, that the edges are what an area/object/phenomenon. Edges are what include and exclude. The same applies to a city where its edges are what speaks of its essence and potential. Edges are the essence

TALLINN BEACHPROMENADE PUBLIC SPACE PLANNING IN THE SECTION OF NOBLESSNERI KALARANNA_2011 spring

RESULT: The beach promenade recreates Kalamaja's seaside identity. The city and the seaside are connected into a whole. The promenade considers the existing views, valuable andhistorical objects and the sea. The purpose while planning the promenade was to connect the seaside into a whole with the city, bringing them closer together. The estetics of the edgeis expressed also in the architectural design, displaying folded surfaces and angular forms. The buildings are placed into the transversal points or places with a view, ie Maritime museumquay building. There are also lights and urban furniture and forms designed for the area. To offer the comfort and possibility to keep oneself warm also in the colder season there arepavilions and buildings in every now and then placed around the promenade. In some places the promenade descends to the sea with stairs. The promenade is in tow levels in frontPatarei building, whereas by the water is a light c route and recreational area and higher above a pathway with barriers oriented to the opening views. The promenade path mostlyruns by the water, but the new public space expands in Kalaranna for the whole green space, from the sea to the 'Cultural kilometre'.

RESULT: Additionally to the promenade and cityscape a visitor harbour is planned to Kalaranna with g gear rental-shop and a boat hire. There is also abeach with a park, which is very important to North-Tallinn as a recreational area. Secondly there is a growing building front by the future Kalaranna street, bythe glint and connects the park with the higher Suur-Patarei street by bridges. The bridges disembouge into the walkable roof, which directs the visitors to thepromenade. The building contains public, business and service spaces. MASTER STUDIES

WHAT: A planning which deals with ways of livingWHERE: A beautiful scarcely populated island in Tallinn bay situated by the capital and many connection routes. The place acts as a tabula rasa allows us to use it as a laboratory for the new ways of living.INPUT: The project was developped together developing shared ideas.IDEA: The idea was to play with the concept of future living and question ourselves how do we portray a possible way for li-ving. How is the future society built up, what is important and how could architecture support it? We see a new kind of to-tal architecture which acts as network to be the economical and efficient solution. A slowly developing and everchanging network will spread all over the island leaving intact wild nature island between the structure. The structure is flexible and considers the existing old roads and landscape. All possible functions are resolved within the structure- the edifice con-tains public space, housing, roads and other infrastructure. The roofs and inner streets function as roads and all initiating public space while the atriums and squares serve as light wells and vertical connectors. The actual housing within the structure can vary in all kinds of forms and ways. The form allows democratic views and sufficient daylight and connects with the surrounding nature. The grid network offers stabi-lity and alternating space. The new kind of hybrid house is on one side universal yet comes from local circumstances and is alwas different.

LANDSCAPE DESIGN FOR NAISSAARE PLANNING:

THE GEOMETRICAL LAYOUT OF THE LANDSCAPE IS DERIVED FROM THE BUILDING STRUCTURE AND CONTINUES THE SAME ESTHETICS AND LINEAR DESIGN. THE CHOES PLANTS ARE MINIMALISTIC AND BASED ON THE FAUNA FOUND ON THE ISLAND.

THE SPACES BETWEEN THE BUILDING STRUCTURE IS DIVIDED INTO DIFFERENT SQUARES: CITYSQUARE, WA-TERFIELD, PLANTFIELD, WILD NATURE, HISTORICAL FIELD AND COVERED ATRIUMS. AN OTHER IMPORTANT PART IS THE WAITINGLANDS- LINEAR PARKS, WHICH MARK THE FUTURE BUILDING STRUCTURE AND ARE FILLED WITH HOU-SING IN TIME. THE LINEAR PARK WILL BECOME ONE WITH THE STRUCTURE, WITH IT’S ROOF AND INNER STREETS, PARKING SPACES UNDER THE BUILDING EDGES AND PAS-SWAYS. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE BUILDING AND LAND-SCAPE DESIGN WILL EASILY CONNECT WITH THE EXISTING AND CREATE A HARMONY.

THE PLANTS CHOSEN ARE PINE TREE, JUNIPER AND BRIER FAMILIAR FROM THE SEASIDE. FROM THE PINE WOODS COMES THE HEATHER AND BILBERRIES-FOXBERRIES. INSTEAD OF GRASS MOSS WILL WORK WELL, SURVIVING EVEN IN LESS SUNNY AREAS. MATERIALS ARE SIMPLE AND NATURAL: GRANITH SLATES (GRANITH BOULDERS ARE COMMON IN NAISSAARE) AND CONCRETE, WOO-DEN PATHWAYS AND SAND SURFACES. URBAN FORMS ARE DERIVED FROM THE FOLDED FORM OF THE BUILDING, MADE OF WHITE STEEL.

THE NEW STRUCTURE WILL COVER 30% OF NAISSAAR’S SURFACE. THE LINEAR FORM OF THE DESIGN IS A STRUC-TURE THAT IN THE SAME TIME CLEARLY DEFINES THE LINE BETWEEN THE DESIGN AND NATURE.

WORK/COMPETITION

WHAT: A competition for a new spatial solution for Tammsaare parkWHERE: A historical park in Tallinn city centreINPUT: A collective input into the design process and creating the 3d and visualizationsIDEA: The new design for Tammsaare park originates from the historical spaces of the park and creates a more versatile park space. The area was divided into zones by the old market building. An open air theatre is planned there by the competition work. There will be a recreation ground in the area where the statue of Tammsaare is situated- “Tammsaare park”. A nowadays unused park by the opera house a public city and park space with City Square and Theater park is placed. In the centre of the recreational area in Tammsaare Park is a shallow pond and a drumlin landscape opening to the southern side. The design creates a peaceful park space surrounding the central statue and directs the more active light traffic past it. A new context is created for the statue- flowing landscape with a ‘lake’, which can be perceived as a hint to the Tammsaares place of origin. The new ‘Grass theater’, with its vines, marks the position of the old market building. The outer naves of the new building are in year-round use with kiosks, cafeteria and bathroom facilities. The central nave functions as an estival open air theater. There is a possibility to create a connection between an adjacent park over the road. The square can be used for pubic events and an underg-round parking lot lies below it.
