ALWAYS ON MY MIND It’s always difficult to decide on a topic for these quarterly articles. Sometimes life’s opportunities provide an avenue to explore, and sometimes you have to make your own. Yet, so much has been produced in written literature, both through modern new age books and older arcane documents, that there is truly nothing new under the sun. The mind eventually gets saturated with tech-nical jargon and knowledge, and the real-ity is that true spiritual teachings have to be eventually embraced experientially through the heart, through instruction received from one’s own “inner teacher”. While the mind can lead one to the door, it’s the inner desire and developed higher rates of one’s frequency that lifts the veil into deeper levels of awareness and un-derstanding. Even the Buddhists state that the Dharma has to be dropped in order to achieve enlightenment. What is really the mind? It is not an ac-tual physical component of our earthly bodies, though it seems to function through the brain. Nicola Telsa said, “My mind is only a receiver. In the universe there is a core from which we obtain knowledge, strength and inspiration. I have not penetrated into the secrets of this core, but I know it exists.” Einstein, considered one of the great physicists of the twentieth century, noted that, “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution." True imagination is the ability of the mind to be creative through formulation of new ideas or concepts from the great storehouse of wisdom hidden within the collective subcon-scious. Yet the mind, the left-brain mentality, does have its place in our evolutionary growth. It answers to an indescribable call, a vague inner shimmering, that we are much more than mere mortals who play our brief parts on the stage of this world. It compels us to want to explore our inner nature in greater depth, to un-derstand who we are and why we are here. As the only one of God’s species

endowed with self-consciousness, hu-manity can play a determining part in its own evolutionary process. Yet, we can’t think our way into enlightenment, as the mind itself can never know truth. Spiritual disciplines and practices, such as meditation, introspection and yoga to name a few, are necessary to quiet the mind so the heart can speak and expand beyond the mind’s limits and its accumulated beliefs and cultural en-cumbrances. There is only one reality, which has been conceptually subdivided into self conscious, subconscious and super conscious levels. At the self-conscious level, our concept of reality is perceived through the five senses which form the basis for all our action thoughts and actions on this plane. However, the deeper understanding of life comes from the subconscious and the collec-tive unconscious levels. The power and drive that manifest in all expres-sions of life come from the subcon-scious level - the anima mundi, the soul of the world, which forms an intrinsic connection between all living things on the planet and unites all mankind with nature as equals. The mind and heart have to be em-braced as a team, for both are required at various times in their proper place. The mind may lead the way for a while, but then must surrender, step back and allow the heart’s wisdom to speak and provide feedback, which the mind can then digest and utilize to improve one’s activities in life. Some of the Alchemi-cal stages, such as dissolution, separa-tion, fermentation and coagulation, hint at this interaction. The Lovers, one of the major arcane cards of the Tarot deck, symbolically illustrated this process clearly. The angel, Gabriel, in the upper section above the mountain of attainment and the cloud of unknowing, represents the Holy Guardian Angel or Higher Self. As is traditional in arcane lore, the woman on the left represents the sub-conscious and the man on the right represents our self-conscious. The

woman has a direct line of sight and looks to the angel but the cloud between the man shrouds his view of the angel so he can only look to the woman. Our divine inspiration and guidance can only come through the feminine part of our personality, through the subconscious. In Alchemy, it is represented by the divine marriage of the Red King and White Queen, the solar and lunar energies, the positive and negative currents in the body, where each fully embraces the other and the two become one, the Philosopher’s Stone. This exalted state represents the eternal balance between the worlds, the space between through which only the heart has access. This has been exemplified by sacred ge-ometry in medieval religion art by pictures of the Christ framed in the vesica piscis (which means “Jesus Fish”, an esoteric reference to the fish symbol adopted by early Christians as a secret code). It is the interconnected space between two interlocking circles, the portal or doorway between the world of the divine and the world of matter, the coming together of heaven and earth. ALWAYS ON MY MIND continued Thus the mind, with its tenuous grasp on the mundane world of existence, has to relinquish its dominance if man-kind is to progress into higher spiritual realms. Yet, the Emerald Tablet, the bible of hermetic philosophy, states that, “Its power is integrating if it be turned into earth”. We have to make use of the greater wisdom, bring it back into this reality to better humanity in this mundane world, for that would be a true expression of our divine jour-ney, our individual uniqueness, our Soul’s purpose, in this incarnation. This alignment of the lower personal consciousness with the higher spiritual consciousness to create an effective force whereby the will of the eternal may be fulfilled on earth is the only truly purposeful reason for any esoteric work. This process, this balance, one of let-ting go and then reintegration, as de-picted in so much of the ancient lore, is one that I will always have to keep, in the words of a well-known song, “always on my mind”. Meditation is a potent method of service to humanity when the mind is used as a channel for the reception of the energies of light and love and the will-to-good and their direction into human consciousness. The moment of the full moon each month offers the greatest opportunity for meditation - particularly in group formation - to be used as a means of cooperation with the Divine Plan or Intention for our world. The esoteric Law of Cycles -- the law which is symbolised by the waxing of the moon to full brightness followed by its waning -- affirms that we can consciously cooperate with the flow of spiritual energies. “The soul's meditation is rhythmic and cyclic in its nature as is all else in the cosmos. The soul breathes and its form lives

thereby. The rhythmic nature of the soul's meditation must not be overlooked in the life of the aspirant. There is an ebb and

flow in all nature, and in the tides of the ocean we have a wonderful picture of an eternal law... the idea of a cyclic re-

sponse to soul impulses lies back of the activities of a morning meditation, a noonday recollection, and an evening review.

A larger ebb and flow is also indicated in the two aspects of the full moon and the new moon.” (Alice A. Bailey) The energies which are uniquely available at the full moon -- when rightly understood, received and transmitted in medita-tion -- can be instrumental in helping humanity to move on towards its spiritual goal as an integrated, aligned centre of con-sciousness within the body of the One in Whom we live and move and have our being. This is the essential objective of monthly full moon meditations. Take the opportunity to personally meditate on the appointed day, focusing on the keynote for that full moon. In undertaking the service of full moon meditation, the aim is to work imaginatively as members of the new group of world servers, dedi-cated to world service. Spiritually and telepathically, the group is one and the work is one.
