Networks & Protocols
Lighting TechnologiesYOUR PARTNER FOR LIGHT
Conventional DMX Networks
• More Complex– Moving lights– Large shows
• Inefficient– Cost – Requirements of today
Lighting TechnologiesYOUR PARTNER FOR LIGHT
Ethernet DMX Networks
• Ethernet distributing DMX– Flexible – Cost efficient
Lighting TechnologiesYOUR PARTNER FOR LIGHT
Modern DMX Requirements
• Large amount of universes
• Console merging
• Cost and time for cabling
Lighting TechnologiesYOUR PARTNER FOR LIGHT
Protocols
• ACN
• ARTNET
• DMX 512-A
• RDM
• ADN (ADB protocol)
Lighting TechnologiesYOUR PARTNER FOR LIGHT
ACN
• ESTA
• Still under development• started 1997• published Dec 2006: architecture• work in progress in ESTA Protocols Working
Group:
DMX-in-ACN, RDM-in-ACN
first free software code being circulated March 2007
Lighting TechnologiesYOUR PARTNER FOR LIGHT
ACN
• standard of controlling light, sound, AV, mechanics
• future standard to send DMX
• protocol on top of Ethernet
Lighting TechnologiesYOUR PARTNER FOR LIGHT
ARTNET
• Artistic License (Not ESTA)– Version 1 in close cooperation with ADB R&D
• DMX 512 (and RDM) over Ethernet– And macros, remote monitors, remote keys
• Several manufacturers
• ACN vs ARTNET
• Protocol on top of Ethernet
Lighting TechnologiesYOUR PARTNER FOR LIGHT
DMX512-A
• fully backwards compatible
• higher levels of electrical protection
• pins 4 & 5 are defined
• galvanic isolation
• Text & Test packet
• RDM
Lighting TechnologiesYOUR PARTNER FOR LIGHT
RDM
• bi-directional communication
• messages are inserted between DMX packets
• pins 2 and 3
• address
• firmware upgraded
• status and fault information
Lighting TechnologiesYOUR PARTNER FOR LIGHT
RDM in practice
Plugfest PLASA March 2007:
– only works well when no DMX is transmitted– tests say: max. 2 splitters / boosters in
cascade

ADN
TOC
• ADN Advanced Dimmer Network– bi-directional communication– on the second data pair in the DMX cable– independent of the DMX signal
it exists and it works...

Ethernet / DMX 512
Will Ethernet replace DMX512?
• NO: Small installations
• NO: Ethernet is the carrier to send DMX 512 by standard Ethernet protocol.
• NO: Daisy-chained such as DMX, ADN, RDM

ADB / RDM
TOC
• RDM
– RDM over Ethernet– RDM in ArtNet– RDM pin 2/3
Lighting TechnologiesYOUR PARTNER FOR LIGHT
ADB / ACN
TOC
• ACN
– Hardware – Software – DMX/RDM over ACN
Lighting TechnologiesYOUR PARTNER FOR LIGHT
Wireless Networks
• WLAN => Carrier for Ethernet
• Don’t use WLAN for DMX =>Use wired ACN or ART-NET
• Ok for Software upgrade – status – remote programming
• Some solutions exist => dedicated products
