Technical Data

Information• When switched off, the docklights 1977-1978/Z can be flooded up to a depth of 20 meters. • In this case, the temperature changes resulting from switching off the lamps of no. 1978 and

1978/Z can cause negative air pressure in the relatively small floodlight housing. To avoid implosion, the housing must be enlarged by a venting connection to the outside air or to the ballast unit box.

• For this reason the docklights are designed with venting connections.

Navigation Lights

1. In the drawing, the standard installation of navigation lights for a vessel of more than 50 meters in length is shown. For vessels of less than 50 meters only one of the masthead lights will be needed.

2. Masthead and stern lights should be mounted in the midship line, masthead with the zero mark in the forward direction and stern in the aft direction. Special care should be taken for the best alignment with the bow-stern line.

3. Side lights should be mounted with its zero mark over a line parallel to the midship line and in the forward direction.

4. For correct screening of the side lights in the forward direction the vessel should be fitted with outer screens according to COLREGs, annex i, point 5 as it is shown in the drawing. These screens have to be painted in black matt.

5. The horizontal positioning of the lights has to be taken into consideration what is indicated in COLREGs, annex I, point 3.

6. The vertical positioning of the lights has to be taken into consideration what is indicated in COLREGs, annex I, point 2.

7. The OCEANIC lights have been designed to use the bulbs indicated in the supplied informati-on. Any other type of bulb could produce an unwanted effect with a dangerous emission of the light what is against the international standards to which the light has been homologated. In order to avoid this problem, it is highly recommended to stock a number of bulbs equivalent to 50% of the navigation lights installed on board.

8. The OCEANIC navigation lights are maintenance free. It is only recommended for its perio-dical cleaning to use a damp soft linen with soap carefully applied on the lens. Do never use solvents or aggresive chemical products.

ne to low temperatures as they emit a considerable amount of infrared heat. In certain conditions of polar navigation, it is needed to provide an extra-heating for deicing the lens surfaces as it is recommended by the DNV in its document “Class Notation De-Ice”. This is achieved in our OCEANIC lights by a radiant heater located in the lower part inside of the lantern. They are isolated from the base by four technically superior ceramic columns, emitting up to 60 watts of heat and controlled by a thermostat.

General-purpose incandescent bulbsGeneral-purpose incandescent bulbs can generally be used without any problems and are

generally very good value. No ballast is required, the voltage changes during lighting is

performed by exchanging the incandescent bulb. The average expected service life is

approx. 1,000 hours and the energy yield is about 5 percent.

Incandescent bulbs for navigation and position lights represent a special case. These

incandescent bulbs differ in some respects from normal incandescent bulbs and they have a

special socket that specifies the installation position. Narrow production tolerances and a

type examination by the relevant authorities.

Halogen lampsHalogen lamps contain halogens as the filling gas. These prevent the sedimentation of

vaporised tungsten on the glass bulb. The benefits include a slightly longer service life of

the illuminant, more light with the same output and a considerably smaller design.

Low-voltage halogen lampsLow-voltage halogen lamps are generally operated with 12 volts. Extremely small designs

are possible, in particular, with reflectors or cold-light reflectors that reduce the surface

temperature of the illuminated surface.

Fluorescent bulbsFluorescent bulbs are distinguished by their high efficiency (lumens per watt) and their

long service life. They achieve an average service life of 12,000h on electronic ballasts

(EVG) and up to 8,000h on conventional ballasts (KVG). Dimming is only possible on

electronic ballasts.

Compact fluorescent bulbsIn contrast to fluorescent bulbs, compact fluorescent bulbs have very small dimensions due

to the bending of the bulb and/or separation into several bulbs. They can be divided into

three groups:

• Compact fluorescent bulbs with two pins for operation on conventional ballasts. In this

case the starter is installed in the bulb socket.

• Compact fluorescent bulbs with four pins for operation on conventional ballasts. In this

case the starter is also housed in the bulb socket.

• Compact fluorescent bulbs with four pins for operation on electronic ballasts. No starter

is required and dimming is possible.

• Compact fluorescent bulbs with E14 or E27 sockets. In this case the electronic ballast is

integrated into the bulb socket. General-purpose bulbs can therefore be replaced with

compact fluorescent bulbs.

High pressure sodium vapour lampsHigh pressure sodium vapour lamps provide a high light output in a smaller design. They

are insensitive to vibration and are therefore ideally suited as flood lights, such as the

DOSE HYDRUS series. Their average service life is approx. 6,000h. A ballast and ignition

unit is required for operation.

High pressure sodium vapour lamps with immediate ignitionHigh pressure sodium vapour lamps with immediate ignition immediately reach their

maximum brightness but require a brief cooling period before they can be switched back on

after they have been switched off. A ballast is required for operation.

Metal halide lampsSimilar to mercury vapour lamps but with improved light yield and colour rendering

because of the added halogens. Metal halide lamps are available with or without ignition

units depending on their design. Special designs from the DOSE CANIS series can also be

ignited when warm.

Connection overviews

Connecting a HQL lamp to 230 V ~Circuit diagram for the mains connection of a HQL lamp. With a reducing circuit in the first

image and without a reducing circuit in the second image. The capacitor serves to compen-

sate the idle power. The second ballast is connected in order to reduce the light output of

the lamp. When the switch is open, the lamp is operated with reduced output, or approx.

60 % of the rated output. The lamp emits its full luminous flux when the switch is closed. In

practice, the switch is replaced with a relay. The reduced output has an energy-saving effect

and increases the service life of the lamp. It is not necessary to first “drive the lamp up” to

the rated output.

Connecting a NAV lamp to 230 V ~Wiring diagram of a sodium vapour lamp (NAV). The wiring is similar to the HQL lamp,

however, the NAV lamp requires a higher ignition voltage. This voltage is generally

generated by an electronic ignition unit (EZG). Reduced output operation is also possible in

this case. Older lamps may still have conventional ignition units with glow starters without

automatic switch-off for defective illuminants. The connecting cable from the ignition unit

to the lamp should always be clamped to the socket’s ground contact. ATTENTION: a

ballast for a HQL lamp may not be used for a NAV lamp and vice versa.NAV lamp
