Connect to reading at your library Your students can explore ways that books can light up their lives this year by taking part in the free annual Children’s Book Week celebrations at the City of Joondalup Libraries. All schools in the City are invited to participate in a range of activities designed to link quality literature to a pathway of learning, discovery, innovation and creativity.

Children’s Book Week allows students to engage in:

• Meet the author/illustrator talks

• Storytelling performances.

All sessions are free, however bookings are essential.

Bookings can only be made on the City’s website at joondalup.wa.gov.au

Please read the following How to Book a Session information carefully and consider all school commitments and transport requirements before making your booking request.

How to Book a Session:

1. Browse through the programme and select the presenters and sessions that interest you.

2. Keep in mind your own constraints such as class sizes, ages, location, bus availability, sports carnivals and other school commitments or excursions during those dates, and only select those sessions you have a firm intention of attending. Non-attendance will incur a cancellation fee.

3. Please use one Online Booking Request Form per class. You may indicate up to 3 preferences. Please prioritise 1 – 3 which sessions you prefer, 1 being most preferable.

4. All Online Booking Requests must be submitted by Monday 25 May 2015.

5. Every effort will be made to allocate each school’s higher preferences but please keep in mind that some presenters will be very popular, and not every class may be able to be accommodated.

6. An initial round of offers will be made to schools by Monday 15 June 2015. Once these have been allocated, a second round of offers will be made, giving priority to schools that have not yet managed to secure a session.

7. Offers will be made as early as possible, to allow schools enough time to make arrangements to attend. It is a courtesy to authors/illustrators for classes to be familiar with their books – it also makes their sessions even more interesting for the students. If you need help please ask your school librarian, or the Youth and Children’s Services Officer on 9400 4759.

8. If a school has to cancel for any reason, notice of at least 3 days prior to the event must be provided, otherwise the school will be charged a cancellation fee to help recoup cost to the library. The cancellation fee will not be charged if another school can be found to attend the session.

PLEASE NOTE: bookings cannot be made through library branches.

All enquiries should be directed to the Youth and Children’s Services Officers, Rebecca Marchenkov or Anita Cheetham by phone on 9400 4759, or by email [email protected]

National Science Week meets Children’s Book Week.

Is writing fiction different to writing non-fiction? Is fantasy more fun than fact? How can science, history and culture inspire your writing? How can a made-up book convey information about real-life issues? And what’s more important than having a great idea?

Discuss all these questions and more in a fast, funny and inspiring hour with science writer and children’s author Cristy Burne. Cristy has worked internationally as a presenter with the Shell Questacon Science Circus and Questacon Smart Moves, a news editor for Scitech, and editor of CSIRO’s kid’s magazine Scientriffic.

Cristy’s debut novel, Takeshita Demons, was written while living in the UK and has sold more than 30,000 copies.

Neil KiddYears 3 - 6

Neil Kidd’s great uncle, Major Thomas Anderson Kidd, has memories that still haunt him after the First World War. Major Kidd was a faithful correspondent and wrote many diaries and letters during his times overseas during the Boer War and the First World War. A set of his detailed diaries are now archived at the Australian War Memorial.

When Neil Kidd discovered his uncle’s diaries he decided to rewrite them for children. The rewritten diary brings Major Kidd’s memory back to life and tells of his frustrations with many secret aspects of the war not known before. The story ponders whether some secrets need to be kept or told.

Neil is a retired teacher who now tutors privately, and is very interested in Australian history being included in the new National Curriculum. He presents a lively performance with antique props and secrets.
