Goal/Standard Benchmark : Visual Communication and Expression ART E 1.5.1 Produce artwork to create meaning and communicate ideas. CCSS: 3MD. Solve problems involving measurement and estimation of intervals of time, liquid volumes, and masses of objects.
Goal: To have students learn about the digital photography technique called ‘light graffiti’.
Students will use digital cameras to make several images in low light to capture motion.
Resource(s): Images of various cameras from 1900-2012
Sample images of light graffiti. Lightgraffiti.com
Materials: Various glow sticks in several colors Small light up objects or flashlights
Digital cameras with slow shutter option Computers with color printers
Activation of Prior Knowledge: (Allow your students some time to think about the topic; use an activity to get their brains moving)
Students will be the most familiar with digital cameras versus film cameras. The glow sticks and small flashlights will appear the same in the picture because we will be using the slow shutter option.
New Information: (What information do they need to understand the topic? What factual information do they need to know
to achieve success on your assessment?) Digital cameras-slow shutter speed
Time elapse to show motion
Active Learning Strategies (Guided Practice, Cooperative Learning, and Individual Practice) You may not have all of these…but try to include if your lesson lends itself to it. Indicate your opportunities for discussion in one or all of these strategies.
Remember the more discussion and reflection – the better. Guided Practice (Teacher Facilitated)
Introduction to light graffiti with
lightgraffiti.com-images
Brief camera history-images.
Demonstration on light graffiti process.
Equipment demonstration.
Cooperative Learning (Teacher and Student Facilitated/Group Practice)
Student discussion on how light graffiti
is made
Student discussion with the digital cameras.
Group work to shoot pictures.
Show and tell!
Individual Practice (Time for teacher to assess informally who understands and
who may need extra guidance – Assessment for Learning)
Students will capture movement in the dark by using the lighted objects and
the slow shutter option on their digital cameras.
Students will work in groups to take
their pictures.
Generalization/Summarize: Review goal and new information of lesson. Introduction to light graffiti with lightgraffiti.com showing the images samples from the video. Students will have a light
discussion on how they think the images were made. The teacher will show a quick image history of cameras and end with the digital camera the students will be using. The teacher will explain the process and the equipment. The students should have
time to examine the camera in small groups to become familiar with the cameras. The student will work in the table groups at one of the camera stations. The room will need to be completely dark. The light for the images will be generated from glow

sticks and other small light up objects. The students will mover the light source around themselves while someone from their group pushes the shutter. The slow shutter speed must be used to capture the light and movement. Students will create
several images and record their results on a sheet. The following class period, the class will view the images and decide which ones to print off to take home.
Assessment: How will you know that your students understand and have learned? Assessment of Learning:
Students will capture movement in the dark by using the lighted objects and the slow shutter option on their digital cameras.
Students will work in groups to take their pictures.
Modifications: this is a group effort, accommodations can be made.
