FIRST LIFT EXPO IN RSA
On Tuesday 27th August the Hon. Minister of Employment & Labour Mr
T Nxesi, delivered the opening address at the Sandton Convention Centre.
Here he is seen cutting the commencement ribbon with Director of Electri-
cal Engineering DEL, Mr Jakes Malatse assisting. On the left is Ms Anitha
Ragunath, Director of Virgo Communications and Exibitions, who co-
ordinated the Expo. On the extreme right is Mr Lexiam Zhang, Chair Per-
son of the China International Lift Market.
This Car Position

was quite a revelation
at the Expo. This
equipment can now
be manufactured in
brass plate for the
discerning buyer,
obviously with mod-
ern technology but
still looking like its

NYARM RELEASES SCHEDULE of ELEVA-TOR CLASSES in USA
NYARM (USA) will present professional development sessions on elevator tech-nology for building manag-ers. The upcoming elevator sessions are scheduled for September 18, October 1, October 15, November 5 and December 4. The pro-gram is designed to …
teach building managers about the sophisticated new elevator technology in new construction
as well as modernization of aged elevators.
Elevator contractors and consultants interested in participating or seeking pric-ing and other information are asked to contact NYARM.
ELEVATORS TO BE RE-QUIRED IN FOUR-
STORY BUILDINGS IN UKRAINE
An updated construction standard will require eleva-tors in buildings with four or more floors, goes into effect on December 1. According to the requirement, it will al-so be recommended that
passenger elevators be in-stalled in houses with three or more floors. Machine rooms, block rooms, stairs and the designs of the ele-vators must still meet current building standards. The number of elevators required for each building will depend on the number of people who live there. This new standard was developed to replace a 2005 requirement considered outdated.
TALLEST BUILDING IN JAPAN PLANNED FOR
TOKYO
Mori Building Co. has un-veiled plans for a redevelop-ment project in central To-kyo that includes what would become the tallest building in Japan, Kyodo News re-ports. The 330-m-tall sky-scraper in the Azabudai-Toranomon district, and is set to be completed in March 2023. The full project is expected to cost US$5.6 billion) and also have a hotel and international school on an 8.1-ha site. Rival company Mitsubishi Estate. is planning a 390m-tall building in Tokyo in 2027 that would then take the dis-tinction of tallest building.

ELEVATOR WORKER DIES IN ACCIDENT
CBS reported that a Boston man who was undertaking ele-vator maintenance, died in the TripAdvisor headquarters in Needham, Massachusetts, on September 3.
TripAdvisor said that day that the incident "is being investi-gated today by the Needham Police”. No TripAdvisor em-ployees were harmed. Being under investigation, details of the incident have not been re-leased.
PLAN FOR WORLD'S TALLEST ‘PASSIVE HOUSE’ IN CANADA
Following news of a proposed pair of 43- and 48-story towers in Vancouver, Canada, that would have been the tallest in the world to meet the Passive House Standard (ELENET 706), a plan for a 60-story pas-sive tower has entered the fray, courtesy of Henson Develop-ments.
Passive houses meet stand-ards that originated in Germa-ny for energy efficiency and comfort. With a "modern aes-thetic with curved lines and glass accents," Henson's pro-posed tower on Nelson Street on the West End is under re-view by city leaders. Should it be built, it would be a "very big deal" for the city, according to Green Building Manager Sean Pander, as it could … help kickstart additional green construction and achieve the city's zero-emission building goal.
PLANS ANNOUNCED FOR
MALAYSIAN MEGATALL
KLCC Holdings, the owner of
Malaysia's tallest buildings, the
Petronas Twin Towers, is set to
lose its crown, but has re-
vealed plans to reclaim it in the
form of Tower M, a 700-m-tall
building within the Kuala Lum-
pur City Centre development,
The Edge Markets reports.
Construction is not planned to
start until sometime after 2030.
Estimates put the gross devel-
opment value of the project
between US$880 million and
US$999 million. The developer
did not say how many stories
Tower M would have, but the
source said it would reportedly
number 145 floors.
OTIS TO SUPPLY 190
UNITS FOR KUWAIT AIR-
PORT'S NEW TERMINAL
Otis Kuwait has been awarded
a contract to supply 190 eleva-
tors for the new Passenger
Terminal 2 at Kuwait Interna-
tional Airport, the company an-
nounced on September 16.
The contract calls for the instal-
lation of 171 Gen2™ units with
capacities up to 5000 kg and
19 heavy-duty elevators with
capacities up to 11 T.
The units feature Otis' ReGen®
Drive, Gen2™ flat-coated steel
belts and Pulse™ monitoring
systems. The con-tract is val-
ued at KWD1.31-billion
(US$4.34-billion).
GIANT ESCALATORS BY THYSSENKRUPP
Thyssenkrupp recently install-led the longest escalators ever produced in Germany, four 100-m-long, 48.7-m-high units that are part of a 25-escalator order for the Baku Metro in Azerbaijan (ELENET 681). The escalators will help increase capacity of the metro stations by 50% and facilitate the flow of more than 231 million pas-sengers annually.
With motors and gears in-stalled on the floor in front of the units rather than inside, the four "steel giants" are, accord-ing to Thyssenkrupp, narrower than any other escalators - yet offer the same level of com-fort and space as traditional units.
Besides the ultra-deep escala-tors, the contract included eight high-rise escalators for the Sa-hil and Khatai stations, and 17 escalators for a new station.
The only Thyssenkrupp escala-tors longer than the ones in the Baku metro are 53-m-high units manufactured for the Moscow Metro that are yet to been installed. Thyssenkrupp is also providing 307 elevators to modernize public housing in Baku.

DAMS WATER
STORAGE STATUS Sent in by Hennie Hudson
Note the various dam depths compared to their surface area - obviously the larger the surface area the greater the evapora-tion!
Now for Devine interven-tion to break the formida-ble drought that is wreak-ing havoc in certain prov-inces, where it has not rained for the past two to three years..
Travelling down to the Free State and Northern Cape last week, we had the most distinct pleasure of meet-
ing an old Schindler stalwart of yesteryear, still employed and serving his company with distinction!
Arthur Hall - District Representative for the Central Free State,
we bumped into him carrying out his routine preventative mainte-
nance in Welkom. Arthur is negotiating going onto pension in De-
cember, when he will have completed 44 years of yeoman service
with Schindler. We remember going down with the late Steve le
Roux to Welkom Hospital, where Arthur was going to install new
DC Dynators. Fortunately he was motivated to stay on after the
hand-over so as to service the Welkom area. Now 44 years later he
has decided to call it a day.
We wonder how many other simi-
lar long service employes are still
active with any lift company in
the RSA. Perhaps these compa-
nies can advise us for inclusion
in the next issue of Educom.
What a welcome surprise to meet Obed Ntsuku Leshage on our lift
inspections in Kimberley last week. With some 35 years of service with
Schindler in the Bloem Branch, we first met Obed in the late 1980’s,
as part of a service-field training contingent in Johannesburg. In those
days employees going the extra mile and noted for their service excel-
lence, were nominated for further developmental training. Investing in
these employees such as Arthur and Obed, has certainly delivered divi-
dends to Schindler over the years. Somehow they all felt that they be-
longed to one big happy family as opposed to today’s employers!

Death of Experienced Wellington
Lift Technician - January 14th
The Government's safety watchdog ruled the death of an experienced Wellington lift technician in a work-place accident was not his employer's fault. The cor-oner heard two days of evidence, to establish why Brendon Scheib, 54, who worked for Otis Elevator Company, failed to return home on January 14 …
Scheib, who had almost three decades of lift industry
experience, was killed when a lift descended on him
in the T&G Building, otherwise known as the Har-
courts Building, in central Wellington. His body lay at
the bottom of the lift shaft for more than two hours,
before an alarm on his phone, triggered by two hours
of inactivity, was sent to the Otis call centre.
Government watchdog WorkSafe investigated the incident, and found Otis had adequate systems in place to ensure technicians were safe. Otis protocols meant technicians were trained to either shut the lift off completely in the machine room, or use two inde-pendent means to stop it. This included using a pit switch, which is at the entrance to the lift pit.
WorkSafe found Scheib either thought he had en-gaged the pit switch, or knocked it accidentally, caus-ing the lift to restart. While WorkSafe found the indus-try's voluntary code of practice was inadequate, it made the decision not to lay charges against Otis.
Perhaps the RSA Lift Industry should introduce
such a cellphone system for their workers, espe-
cially now that service assistants have technical-
ly been withdrawn in our Industry! (Ed)

COFFIN AT ROADSIDE Sent in by Willem du Toit
I was carrying out periodic lift inspections on the North-West Province silos, between Wolmaranstad and Ma-quassie, when I passed this coffin. I couldn’t believe what I saw, so braked and reversed back … On closer inspection it was found to be a real bona fide coffin. It had apparently not been used before, for there certainly was no sign of a body having been transported in it. Did it fall off a truck I thought? In any case makes one think who would leave it out there in the bundu and still tie it to a game-farm’s boundary fence.
I surmised that it was probably only superstition that stopped it from being nicked and used for the purpose for which it was manufactured in the first place, for its quality indicated that it certainly was not a cheapy.

Guidelines on Decision Rules and Statements of Conformity
ILAC-G8:09/2019
ILAC is the global association for the accreditation of laboratories, inspection
bodies, proficiency testing providers and reference material producers, with a
membership consisting of accreditation bodies and stakeholder organisations
throughout the world.
It is a representative organisation that is involved with:
the development of accreditation practices and procedures,
the promotion of accreditation as a trade facilitation tool,
supporting the provision of local and national services,
the assistance of developing accreditation systems,
the recognition of competent testing (including medical) and calibration laboratories, inspection bod-
ies, proficiency testing providers and reference material producers around the world.
ILAC actively cooperates with other relevant international organisations in pursuing these aims.
ILAC facilitates trade and supports regulators by operating a worldwide mutual recognition arrangement –
the ILAC Arrangement - among Accreditation Bodies (ABs). The data and test results issued by laborato-
ries, and inspection bodies, collectively known as Conformity Assessment Bodies (CABs), accredited by
ILAC Accreditation Body members are accepted globally via the ILAC Arrangement. Thereby, technical
barriers to trade, such as the re-testing of products each time they enter a new economy is reduced, in sup-
port of realising the free-trade goal of “accredited once, accepted everywhere”.
In addition, accreditation reduces risk for business and its customers by assuring that accredited CABs are
competent to carry out the work they undertake within their scope of accreditation. Further, the results from
accredited facilities are used extensively by regulators for the public benefit in the provision of services that
promote an unpolluted environment, safe food, clean water, energy, health and social care services.
Accreditation Bodies that are members of ILAC and the CABs they accredit, are required to comply with
appropriate international standards and the applicable ILAC application documents for the consistent imple-
mentation of those standards.
Accreditation Bodies having signed the ILAC Arrangement are subject to peer evaluation via formally es-
tablished and recognised regional cooperation bodies using ILAC rules and procedures prior to becoming a
signatory to the ILAC Arrangement.
The ILAC website provides a range of information on topics covering accreditation, conformity assessment,
trade facilitation, as well as the contact details of members. Further information to illustrate the value of
accredited conformity assessment to regulators and the public sector through case studies and independent
research can also be found at www.publicsectorassurance.org.

COUNTRY LIFT INSPECTIONS ...
Travelling down to the Free State for in-
spections in Bethlehem and Clarens, the
‘Sentinel’ at Golden Gate National Park is
as magnificent as ever. Its beauty on the
border between South Africa and the
mountain kingdom of Lesotho remains as
awe-inspiring as visitors have witnessed
it for millennia.
The green valleys contrasting with the
golden luminescence of the hills makes
for a photographer’s dream as one en-
deavours to encapsulate this contrast in
a feast of beauty within a photograph.
As we wind our way down through the twist-
ing and turning mountainside road back to
our B&B in Bethlehem, the last rays of the
setting sun deliver up this bonus of a volu-
minous 3D cloud formation that forced us to
stop in wonderment. Quickly the tulip-
yellow changed to orange … then to blood-
red … and finally to grey as night set in …
all in a matter of a scant few minutes.
What a beautiful revelation of the Creator’s
magic, producing such a plethora of colour
that you see through the lens of your eyes
… but witness with your heart.

IFE EXHIBITS AT LIFT EXPO ...
We visited several local independent lift and esca-lator service providers at the Expo, requesting each exhibiter to forward us data of their equip-ment and their company. This flyer was received from Suresh Raj-money, Sales and Development Director for IFE.
With the other local inde-pendents visited at the Expo, it immediately be-came evident that most of them were importing full CKD kits from Europe and Asia-Pacific, for in-stallation in South Africa. It is no longer viable for them to manufacture lo-cally as before when they mixed and matched. This tends to level the lift mar-keting playing field when competing against the multi-national lift compa-nies.
Apart from Schindler’s large exposition, the oth-er multi-nationals were conspicuous by their ab-sence. On the obverse of the coin, we visited over a dozen Chinese exhibi-tors, with many of the names totally foreign to us in South Africa. It was obvious that a concerted effort had been made to introduce these lift equip-ment suppliers to the South African Lift Market.
Just a pity so few lift owners, developers and facility mainte-nance company repre-sentatives attended the Expo.
Page 12
Overheard at an Expo coffee vending machine … “Is the absence
of the multi-nationals at our first-ever Expo, not reflective of the
esteem in which they appear to hold the South African lift indus-
try?”

This 66 year old AC Sin-gle-Speed geared lift drive lift installed by Schindler-Davies in 1953 is still in an as-original condition.
The original relay-logic control and mechanical rope-driven selector were replaced in March 2014 by independent service provider Peter Guthrie of ‘Racklift’. The control is now PLC-logic with frequency control for the drive, obviously including new car and landing ‘Elemod’ call-buttons, with total rewire and trailing cables.

LIFT PRODUCT QUALITY LIFT PRODUCT QUALITY -- The Old vs the New ...The Old vs the New ...
There cannot be many such ‘Schindler-Davies’ lift installations left in South Africa, as Schindler RSA became a wholly owned representative subsidiary of Schindler CH (Switzerland) in 1954. Still with the original gear-case and drive sheave, this installation stands for quality of product with its 66-year life cycle to date. Again proves the old maxim of a quality product receiving quality preventative maintenance service extending the useful life of such a lift.
Also inspected this month, is this Schindler installation in Kimberley, serviced by Gerhard Hat-tingh. It is the latest Schindler technology MRL with AC V3F gearless belt drive … Comparing these two installations is neither practical nor viable as the technologies are eons apart. Of one thing we are sure ... that this latest installation will not last an identical 66 years. The Swiss de-sign parameters of yesteryear, especially of strength of materials, is certainly different to the Chinese manufacture parameters from where this latest lift was sourced. We would even ven-ture that the definitions of quality from today to yesteryear cannot be construed as identical ...
