Theresa cirino was also in attendance at the Posse Installation January 17Farewell… But not Goodbye. I

wanted to take a moment to drop a line to all my friends and residents of Westbrook Village. As you may or may not know, I have resigned my position as the Rec Center Manager and have moved on to Sun City Rec Centers. I thank you for the friendship, love and support that you have so unselfishly given me. I will certainly miss the WVA Board of Directors and I thank you all for allowing me to serve you for the past 2 years. I look forward and welcome any opportunity to see you in the future.

lighter load of vacation house checks as well. You might be interested to know the Posse made 21,609 housechecks last year and it took 18,567 hours to do them. Please don’t forget to turn in your updated information sheet so we have what we need to look after your property. Also, if you would be interested in knowing more about the Posse with the thought of joining please call the Posse Office 623-566-3133 and leave a message. One of our recruitment officers will call you back. We always are in need of good people an would be happy to talk with you. To illustrate the need, two of our finest have recently retired and will be sorely missed. Posseman Bob Campbell has service dating back to May of 2004 and Posseman Jerry Goodwin has service dating back to November 2006. Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to both of these gentlemen and we wish them the best in future endeavors. The NCAA Division One Ladies Golf Tournament from Feb. 23 thru Feb. 25. Thirteen universities will be represented. Your Posse will be assisting with traffic control as it was last year. You might want to attend. Since we have gotten a number of questions regarding disposal of firearms please know the Posse does noT accept guns. They need to go to the Peoria Police Dept. who will dispose of them. You can call them at the Police Dept’s. non-emergency line 623-773-8311 and make arrangements to bring the weapon to the police station. They do not offer a pickup service so it is necessary to bring the weapon to the police station. After you park your car in the parking lot put your gun in the trunk and go into the station. Do noT brIng a gUn InTo ThE STaTIon. An officer will accompany you out to your car and take the gun off your hands. Thank you so much for your generosity in our recent fund drive. Thank you for helping us to help you. Best wishes to you in 2013.

MaX aLLEn. Registered Pharmacist since June 1962 and practiced in 3 states. I owned a neighbor-hood pharmacy in Bangor, Maine, provided statewide vendor and consultant services to nursing facilities, boarding facilities and penal institutions until Nov. 1986. I enjoy giving back to my community, profes-sion and synagogue. I have participated by serving on boards, taking on the responsibility of leadership at all levels. Westbrook Village is an active commu-nity and fun to live in. I am asking for your vote to the Board of Directors to enable me to contribute knowl-edge and experience that I have accumulated to help us continue to grow and prosper.PETEr aTkInS. Peter was born and raised in the UK and became a U.S. Citizen in 1992. Educated in the UK as a Management Accountant, Peter spent his 34 year career with 3M where he retired in 2002 as I.T. Director. Peter and his wife Janet are active in the golf community where Peter is a past President of the 18 Hole Couples group. He currently holds the position of President on the Westbrook Village Asso-ciation BOD and serves on the WVA Budget Commit-tee, Ways and Means Committee and the Personnel Committee. Peter has also served on the Landscape and Facilities Committee and has held the position of Treasurer of the BOD. Peter’s objective is to maintain Westbrook Village to the highest standards, ensur-ing our community provides the lifestyle that attracted our residents to Westbrook Village. He is committed to long-term fiscal responsibility and planning for the future.kEn boonTJEr. My name is Ken Boontjer. Born in 1948 in Hastings, Nebraska. JoAnn and I have been married for almost 41 years. I went into the US Army in 1968 and served in Vietnam as a joint CIA./Military Intelligence operation that targeted the politi-cal enemy. I attended and graduated from Glendale CC and attended ASU as an elementary education major. The last several of my 34 years at the Post Of-fice, I worked as a union steward. This meant I had to negotiate settlements between management and craft personnel, and do so very successfully. Since my re-tirement, and before, I have taught Bible study groups for my church and some other churches. As an elder, I had to decide on financial, personnel, insurance and budget activities. I love living in Westbrook Village. My desire is to see that our residents have informa-tion given on future plans, and desire to have their input into such plans. My goal is to represent you in making sound, appropriate decisions for our commu-nity.aMY MILLEr. I enjoy living in Westbrook Village and spend a good deal of time volunteering for the community. You might recognize my name as I found-ed and plan the Annual Home Expo/Fall Festival and the Westbrook 2nd Sunday’s Farmer’s Market. My husband and I moved to Eagle Ridge 6 years ago. When we first moved here, I assisted in managing the Lakes Rec Center office; at that point I determined I would someday run for the Board of Directors. To fur-

ther learn about the issues that confront our Home-owner’s Association, I joined one it its integral com-mittees, the Architectural Control Committee serving as its chair for 2 of the 4 years I have been an active member. I helped update the Village with the expand-ed color pallet, the addition of Ledgestone to the com-munity and guided the ACC to become a much more approachable, user-friendly group. Through this work and volunteer experiences, I have gained a very com-prehensive understanding of our HOA. DEnIS rIDDIForD. My wife and I purchased a home in WVA in 2001 after spending 16 years as owner-principal of Highway Supply, LLC, a high-way specialty company located in Albuquerque NM. While living in NM I was president of the Rio Grande Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors and served on several committees of the Del-Norte Rotary Club of Albuquerque. While Living in Colorado, I was instrumental in organizing the Echo Lake Homeowner Association, in Pagosa Springs and was elected to serve as President of the Board. In Westbrook Village I have served on the ACC and was appointed to the Board in 2009 to fill an expired term. During that term I served on the Ways and Means Committee, Co-Chair the Ad Hoc Median Improvement Committee and served on the Personnel Committee. I have also been involved in the Charity Challenge Car Show. My objective is to provide guidance and counsel to our professional management team. The Board has the responsibility to see the Association operates within budget while maintaining our facilities to meet current needs. With Board and committee experience you will elect an experienced resident who understands the operation of WBV HOA. As a Board member I will lis-ten and see resident input on issues that come before the Board.cLarkE SToUgh. My wife Margie and I live in Westbrook Village because we like the people, the surroundings and this makes year round homeowner-ship ideal for us. I would like to help keep Westbrook Village functioning properly at reasonable costs. I be-lieve my management and financial background plus experience as President of a Chicago property man-agement company, Chief Operating Officer of a large travel company and working for venture capital com-panies would be an asset to the Westbrook Village Board.

We have received 6 applications for the Board of Directors. As per the term limits of the WVA By-Laws, the Homeowner Association will elect three (3) Directors to the WVA Board of Directors at the Annual Meeting March 13 at 6:00 at the Lakes Rec Center.

charITY chaLLEngE WEEkEnDBonnie FrancoWith the rain all day Saturday both Tennis and Pickleball tournaments were unable to play. The Pickleball group even tried to squeeze in a game on Sunday but the

weather just would not allow it. Golf was can-celled with both cours-es too wet to use. The Car Show and Walk-A-Thon was cancelled because of the rain. In spite of all the weather related cancellations, the Charity Challenge Party was held Sunday afternoon. The big raffle prizes were assigned as well as the 50/50 raffle winners. Both the Live & Silent Auctions took place with many pleased bidders. The food & beverages were well re-ceived & the golf prizes were given away to the registered players as if they had actually played

a round of golf. With all the combined monies earned from the Charity Challenge Golf Tournament, the Chili Cook Off, the Challenge Bingo event donations from the Tennis Club and the Pickleball Club plus monies gath-ered on Sunday, we managed to earn over $25,000 which will be forwarded to the University of Arizona Can-cer Center. Paola Werstler, from the Cancer Center, was present Sunday at the party and she was happy to see many friends from prior years.

We’re excited to welcome 2 more volunteers from Cambridge Crossing: Joan Carlson & Lee Allinger. Both are fairly new to Westbrook and ready to begin their helping careers! Thanks to Joyce Bersano, long-time Helping Hands volunteer for her recruiting effort. I must apologize for not acknowledging all the won-derful people in this community who make a practice of taking care of their homebound neighbors’ needs, giving aid and assistance on a regular basis. The only way they make it into this article is if I person-ally hear about them. So if anyone wants to nominate a neighbor for recognition, please give me a call! On that note, I’d like to nominate Jeff & Cindy Broderick as outstanding neighbors, who have been going far and above being good neighbors for many years. The recipient of this loving care and concern didn’t want to be mentioned. Cindy & Jeff are some of unsung he-roes in our community, who answer distress calls at all hours and are always willing to drop everything to help. They do it willingly and graciously, without ques-tion or thought of self, and they have our highest re-gard. You are ALL appreciated! We also want to men-tion that some of our volunteers have expressed an interest in doing visiting, playing cards, or reading to people. If you have a special need, please give ei-ther Roz Farnsworth or Betty Sullivan a call and we’ll check our “special list” to see if we can accommodate your request. Finally, we thank the following people for donations received last month. Gene Pinkerton donat-ed a 4-wheel walker & cane, Mark B. Monroe donat-ed a wheelchair & 2 walkers and Lou Telles donated cash. Thank you for supporting our organization and its mission to be there for each other.Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compli-ment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have

the potential to turn a life around. – Leo BuscagliaHelping Hands volunteers are committed to helping each other – we invite you to join us! WbV roaDrUnnErS rV cLUb. At our rally there were 20 RVers & 4 guests that made the trip to Solvang, CA during the coldest week in January. We headed to the Flying Flags RV Park in Buellton, CA next to the Danish community of Solvang. Our hosts were Jo & Larry Laird. They supplied a delicious breakfast at the RV Park’s Clubhouse. Some of the interesting places we visited were Solvang’s Bakeries, shopping at Solvang’s Farmers Market, Old Mission at Santa Barbara, Pismo Beach, Chumash casino, wineries & lunch at the Santa Barbara wharf. Our wonderful hosts also served a spe-cial Italian Ziti/sausage dinner & all the trimmings prepared by Jan & Mike Shane. We all enjoyed dinner at the famous Andersen’s Pea Soup Restaurant & cele-brated Dean Shaw’s 70th birthday with a cake. Another special event was a Chili Cook-off enjoyed by all. We all sampled 5 different chilis made by our RVers. It was a close contest with Butch Rasmussen winning this year. Thank you Jo & Larry Laird for a fantastic job as our hosts. We missed you Jan and Mike Shane.

PhoTograPhY cLUb. Rusty Pinckney. We have several field trips planned for 2013. We hope the recent rains afford wildflower photographic opportunities. Our monthly meetings include lively interactive discus-sion as well as an informative program on one aspect of photography. A recent program featured a competition between the women & men members. Judge J. J. (Gerlitz) provided impartial scoring. Watch for an image in future issue of Lifestyles. Our recent field trip was a visit to the Japanese Friendship Garden in downtown Phoenix to capture the beauty that fortunately was not disturbed by the recent freeze. In March the club will attend the Spring ACCC Spring Round Up when ASU graduate & pro-fessional photographer Kerrick James will speak. Our meet-ings afford opportunities for members to learn from oth-ers & glean new ideas and/or techniques about photog-raphy. Photo of the month is a creative image by Bette Kren-zke who captured an ice for-mation on her fountain during the cold snap in Jan. The club meets the 1st Tues. each month at 7pm in the FALC at the Vis-tas Rec Center Sept. thru May. Anyone interested in pho-tography is welcome to come at 6:30 for informal photo chat then stay for the 7:00 meeting. For more info call Bob Cielek 623-566-8035.WBV LIFESTYLES • MAR 13 31

It is never too late to pick up a new hobby. Whether you are 5 or 99 learning something new never gets old. At the Westbrook Village Golf Club, members & even visi-tors can receive a golf lesson from one of the Golf Pros. Brandon Evans, John McCahan, Mark Spolarich & Nick Wampach are among the golf pros available at a 2 day advanced schedule. Each lesson is $40 dollars for 45 minutes. Golf Pro, John McCahan, has been teaching the game of golf for 25 years. “I would advise any beginner to see a PGA professional first. Also, make sure you have a good base with a strong stance & firm grip. It will be easier in the long run when you have the basics down,” said McCahan. The first technique a beginner learns is the grip. “If you don’t hold it precisely, you won’t be successful. And if you don’t set your body correct, then you won’t have a consistent swing,” said McCahan. One mistake many first time golfers make, is swinging the club too hard. This in fact, doesn’t allow the big muscles to work properly. For more info on golf lessons call either Pro Shop 623-566-4548 Ext. 301 (Lakes) or Ext. 201 (Vistas). Stop by the golf club & book your lesson today!
