Spring is in the air!A Note from our Award winning Editor. . .

It’s Easter, chocolate bunnies are everywhere, it’s holiday time again, with 2 weeks off the school run (hurray) and the days are getting lighter. Are these enough reasons enough to have a spring in our step?

We’ve just about recovered from the Liverpool Lifestyle Awards and what a night it was. Read about the highlights inside and see more images online at www.lifestylemonthly.co.uk

It’s Comic Relief and we’re supporting the big Red Nose Day. We chat to breakthrough comedian Adam Rowe. As always with us we’ve packed in lots of interviews and we are proud to champion new talent in the city. We’ve an exclusive with MOBO winner Esco Williams and football legend for Tranmere Rovers, Eric Nixon. And while we don’t agree with the Scousebrow, we have to admire the beautiful woman who coined the phrase, make up artist Jodie Lundstram who also chats to us about her new projects.

Staying with sport we’re previewing the biggest event in our sporting calendar, the Grand National and looking forward to the launch party this month.

I’m putting my feet up while my pregnancy develops.. but actually our next big event is our 5th birthday party and then Liverpool Fashion Week (1419 October) Please keep up to date with the news at www.liverpoolfashionweek.co.uk and tell us what you think of our new website while you are browsing.

Welcoming all our new advertisers to lifestyle magazine this month and a big thank you to our regular clients and our loyal readers without whom we would not have lasted 5

years. If you are in Liverpool city centre please pop into our !"#$%&'()$(&'%&share with our sister company, fashion agency Model101.

Take care and stay safe

“When I say that twenty years have passed since James’s murder, it sounds unreal. It is twenty years but to me it still feels like yesterday that my beautiful son was killed,”says Denise. “I often think of him. Most days something will trigger a memory. Images come into my mind or I will think back to things that he did or said. “I cherish the memories of him. Like a day I’d come out of the shower and sprayed some smelly stuff on.

“He said ‘You smell lovely mummy’ and put a big smile on my face. I still use that same spray to this day, because it reminds me of James.

“James was such a bright little boy who knew his ABC and his numbers. I think he would have done well at school. His brother Michael is nineteen now and into his football. I think James would have been too. When James was here he was always playing with a ball. We have lots of keepsakes of him. I have a lock of his hair and one of his little jumpers among my clothes. When my late mother was in hospital a few years ago. She was chatting to other ladies on the ward who asked who the little boy was who they had seen, with me, playing around her bed while she was asleep.

“There had been no child with me while I was visiting.

There is only one explanation in my mind. It must have been James wanting to be near his Nan.

I do believe his spirit lives on and I feel that he’s still somehow present at my side wherever I go.”

“I’m convinced that he is an untreated psychopath who has learned how to manipulate the system to his own ends. They need to see through his act and send him for treatment in a psychiatric hospital.

Denise, founded the James Bulger Memorial Trust charity in tribute to her son in 2011. It provides holidays for bereaved children, young victims of crime, carers and others who have done good works.

She said: “Settingup and running the charity has been a good thing. It is a encouraging to have people supporting the charity and to know that good things are being done in James’ name. It helps me to cope with losing him.

“Soon after the court case I had a new baby and I poured all my attention into him. I had to be there for him. I was never going to go popping pills or slugging drink. The grief was still there but more than anything else it was having Michael that helped me through.

“I had to push the hurt to one side. Had to look for the light at the end of the tunnel.

“Then my marriage broke down. It was Ralph’s decision to leave, but in losing James I’d already been to rock bottom. Nothing I could not handle.

“I was 24 when I lost James and I had to toughenup overnight. Now I’m have learned to cope with anything that comes my way.

been lost. “He would have been part of my wonderful family and that is a joy that was so cruelly taken away from him.

“People ask how I ever came to terms with James’s murder. I think the most important thing is that you have to talk about the person who died.

“Hardly a day goes by that James’ name is not mentioned in this house. It’s wrong to think that by not mentioning them the pain will go away. The more I remember James, the more comfort I feel.

“The pain of losing him will never go away. But there’s so much more in my life that I have determined long ago not to be a victim any more.

The thing that rubs salt in the wound for me is knowing Thompson is walking around thinking he got away with murder.

“Venables had his chance and he has blown it. At least he has now spent three years in an adult prison, and one of those purely for the murder of James.

“So, at last there is some shred of justice for James. That is what I have fought for over these past twenty years .+7&/(./&)1&'(./&:&')33&$!+/)+,%&/!&#5(/&"!-9

“After Venables conviction we found out he’d had sex with a carer at the home where he was held. That was just he once they were caught. But it was all coveredup at the time and he was give parole despite the fact he was out of control then.

“He must never be allowed out again unless they are one hundred per cent sure he has accepted the responsibility for James’ murder, shown some real remorse and demonstrated that he is no longer a danger to society.

“Otherwise it is always going to keep blowingup again and again.”

Merseyside will be extending a warm welcome to the many visitors heading towards Aintree for the 2012 Grand National. This year the festival promises to be as popular as ever with an estimated 150,000 people attending the event over the three days between April 12 and April 14. Despite the vast numbers attending, the festival has an excellent record for safety and crime. Merseyside Police has been working with Aintree Racecourse, local councils, Merseytravel and other partners to ensure everyone has an enjoyable, fun and safe day out. Here are a few simple tips to help your day at the races goes smoothly and safely:

! Arrive at the racecourse in plenty of time, everyone will be searched as they enter, please be patient as there may be queues

! Leave extra bags at home. Only bring what you need - it will help you get into the racecourse quickly

! Consider using public transport to and from Aintree – there are excellent bus and train services

! Look after your stuff, don’t leave handbags or mobile phones unattended

! Keep wallets and purses out of sight and take care with your cash when placing bets and collecting winnings

! Drink responsibly – being drunk can make you more likely to become a victim of crime

! After a day at the races please think about local residents and leave the racecourse area safely and quietly

Aintree is a great event – let’s keep it that way. Have fun but keep yourself and your belongings safe, drink responsibly and be considerate to local residents

!Aoife Hannon is a couture milliner based in Listowel, Kerry on the west coast of Ireland. From her studio there Aoife creates one off beautiful feminine headpieces for every occasion. In Ireland there is a culture whereby if a girl is invited to an event she will buy a new outfit which will almost certainly include a new hat, so Aoife recognizes that her hats must be financially attainable so that you can buy more than one a year! Aoife is the sister of Grand National winning Jockey – Jim Culloty, who won the race in 2002 aboard the Nigel TwistonDavies trained horse Bindaree. Through her connections in racing her pieces are already worn by high profile ladies in both England and Ireland, from Chanelle McCoy to Aintree royalty Beryl McCain and Channel 4 TV presenter Emma Spencer. One of her pieces even made it to William and Kate’s wedding!!!! In Ireland at the races they also have many ladies days competitions and Aoife’s are often see in the final line up, if not in the winner’s enclosure for the best dressed lady.

Each piece is made from the highest quality materials and great care and attention is taken to ensure that they are well balanced and light making them very easy to wear. This is so that you can put them on in the morning before racing or a wedding and still be wearing them in the evening without being uncomfortable. Her aim is to make unique pieces that also make you look as pretty as you can. We have do ready to wear and can make to match any outfit.

You can buy Aoife’s hats in England through me at Penny’s Hats. I am happy to stylise you for a hat with any outfit and will be in Liverpool on Saturday 9th March at Models 101 from 10am to 5pm with hats for Aintree. Please contact me prior to arrange an appointment.

A local professional face and body painter Beccie will be teaming up with other professionals and painting as many pregnant ladies tummies 'bumps' as they can on Fri 15th March 2013 which is Red Nose Day. The event is done nationwide and is known as the National BumpAThon but Beccie and her team will be bringing the BumpaThon to Waterloo. It will be a great event where local painters and expecting mums can get together and celebrate and raise money for a worthy cause. There will also be a cake sale, tombola, and various other things to help raise funds on the day so will be great to bring along the whole family! They will charge only £5 (to cover costs of the paints) for the mums

to get their belly painted, but the mums should aim to raise a about £50 via friends and family donations to donate to Red Nose Day.The venue will be The Queens Picture House (Wetherspoons) on South Road in Waterloo from 10am until 7pm.Everyone is welcome to get involved either as a “bump”, a painter and of course nonbumps and nonpainters are more than welcome to sponsor or donate and come along on the day too.

To make a donation or to sponsor Beccie and the team please visit http://my.rednoseday.com/sponsor/bec

Editor Amanda Moss was commissioned by German magazine, Verlag, to write a piece about Hipster Fashion in Liverpool. Published in February across Europe here is her extract for Lifestyle magazine.

You don’t have to step out too far into Bold Street to come across a hipster fashionista, angling towards you with his Diesel or Jack and Jones jeans resting nervously below the hips. Does he pull them up or slide them down? H(%& 5-%./& /()+5& .G!,/& 0)A%-8!!3& )1& /(./& 2!,& ')33& #+7&hipsters of all ages here. Hipster fashion is ageless and spans all the decades. Liverpool is a very tolerant city, proud of its roots and welcoming of visitors and the cultures they bring. It has been voted the friendliest city to visit in the UK, we like to chat to strangers, we embrace the bohemien freedom of travel and our eyes are open to the opportunities it brings our way. As such we embrace the fashion.

Szene sehr beliebten angeranzten Altbau-Look. Hier steht der Magazine-Store „do you read me?!“.

Kreuz-kölln be!nden.

How did you get into stand up?I’d always wanted to give it a go as I’d always watched it and loved it. Then a friend and I decided to run our own night. We sold it out to family and friends and it went really well I’ve never even considered looking back! Getting drunk while you work is encouraged in this industry. Most jobs don’t approve of that... Apparently.

What kind of material do you do?There’s nothing funnier than real life so I like being able to take inspiration from that. I’ve got a lot of material from bus rides!

Having established yourself as one of the best new acts around where can we see you perform?I’m now regularly performing up and down the country, which is great. Liverpool wise I perform for HotWater Comedy Club at The Crown Hotel a few times per month. Which is also where I’ll be doing my solo show in June!

Comedians are generally depressed people, are you?Haha! That’s very true! Not me though, I tend to take things as they come. It’s pointless worrying about things you can do nothing about. “Why so serious?” Is my motto. Although I think someone else might have said that before me.

How will you be getting involved with Comic Relief?Last year I got asked to do a Comic Relief special with all proceeds going toward the cause. This year that hasn’t happened so I’m going to donate the fee from one of my gigs instead. Comic Relief is a great event and always raises a lot of money for a brilliant cause!

Who are your comedy heroes? My two favourite comedians are Dylan Moran and Jason Manford, who is an act I’m often compared to, which always makes my day.

He’s a brilliant comedian and has helped me a lot since I met him both on and off stage! Cosmo Jarvis sings effortlessly and naturally like a young Elvis Costello or Tom Petty at their gloriously soulful best. An accomplished and mature songwriter and not a bad looking fellow either, I’m expecting him to play at a much bigger venue than the very agreeable but compact Mello Mello the next time that this 23 year old from New Jersey via Devon visits Liverpool. He is a whole year younger than the allconquering Adele but already has twice as many selfpenned and selfproduced albums to his rather unusual name (his mother is ArmenianAmerican and his father is British) and clearly possesses every bit as much of the talent and potential. Complimented superbly by a well drilled guitar, bass and 7-,41I&@.-A)1&7%3)5(/%7&,1&"-!4&1/.-/&/!&#+)1(&')/(&.&')7%32&varied selection from his already extensive repertoire. I’m not often impressed by new music and young singersongwriters can be quite selfindulgent and sometimes tediously introspective, but I quickly became a fan of this young man who is without doubt the real deal. Check him out now before he is huge.

People from all over North West are being urged to wear their Red Nose with pride and do something funny for money. The money you raise helps people right here in North West. Since the last Red Nose Day, more than £3.5 million has been spent on 232 projects across The North West.

Jessie J is shaving her head to raise lots of ‘money, money, money’ for Red Nose Day and Comic Relief can today reveal that she will be shaving her hair down to 0.5mm, live on the big Night of TV on BBC One on Friday 15th March. Jessie J is part of a team of celebrity Fun Raisers who will be encouraging the nation to do something funny for money. Jessie’s preparations for her big Dare are well underway with the pop sensation pictured getting lathered up with the help of some Red Noses.

There are three different Dinosaur Red Noses to choose from this Red Nose Day, all available from Sainsbury’s, Sainsburys.co.uk, Oxfam or rednoseday.com. They’re /(%&#-1/&]!1%1&')/(&/!%1I&1!&/(%&8,G3)$&1(!,37&(,--2&G%"!-%&they run out.

Niall said: “We are really excited to be part of Red Nose Day this year. We recorded Blondie’s One Way or Another and we really want the song to raise lots of money and for people to show their support by going out and buying themselves a copy.”

Louis added: “Getting the chance to perform Blondie’s song will be incredible. We’re so excited! Red Nose Day is a great excuse to have a lot of fun and to raise money, please get involved.”

This year’s Red Nose Day tshirts have been designed by Stella McCartney. One Direction and a host of famous faces including Caroline Flack, Stephen Fry, Miranda Hart, David Walliams, Jack Whitehall and Claudia Winkleman have been pictured wearing them. These fashion musthaves are available to buy from TK Maxx nationwide, tkmaxx.com and rednoseday.com.

Photographer Ida Huosy from Norway has fallen in love with the Liverpool charm.....

Where are you from?I'm from a city in Norway called Drammen. It's not far from the capital city Oslo.I wanted to study in England because I fell in love with the country years ago. When I had the opportunity to study in a new country, with a new language and new culture I couldn’t let the chance go past me. And I love football, so Liverpool was an obvious choice.

What do you love about photographing the city?I love taking pictures in Liverpool. It is such a beautiful city. There are so much architecture and nice motives.

What is so special about liverpool?I like Liverpool because there are so many things going on at once. The city centre is amazing with so many features and you can walk everywhere. As for pictures, there are so many iconic buildings that deserves attention.

Tell us about your passion for photographyI have always been fascinated by the art of photography. I love taking picture and after realizing that my iPhone takes decent picture I don't seem so stop taking them. It's so easy to take a few snapshots here and there and then if there are any good ones, post them online.

What kind of things do you like to photograph?I'm taking picture of everything I think might look good which is more or less everything. I have been told I have an eye for photography. I'm taking pictures of virtually everything that passes by me.

What are your future aspirations? The future. Hm, I don't really know. I'm studying international journalism at LJMU at the moment and I have worked as a journalist for year, but I am enjoying photography a lot, so I will most certainly think that I will end up doing something related to that. In what form, I don't know yet. I'm very interested in social media and media developments as well.

To encourage budding entrepreneurs to start new businesses, the European Regional Development Fund is paying for a programme of advice, guidance, training and support for people in Merseyside who are underrepresented in the business world.

In his Report on the Startup and Development of Small Businesses published in May 2012, Lord Young stated that “Today it is easier than it ever has been to start a business…”

R./.& $!33%$/%7& G2& */.-/o8& Q-)/.)+& .+7& A%-)#%7&by Companies House shows that 484,224 new businesses were started in 2012. This record number means that more and more people are looking to their own knowledge, skills and talent to provide an income for themselves and their families.

So, if you have a business idea but don’t know what to do; or if you like the idea of being your own boss but don’t have a business idea; or if you’d F,1/&3)E%&/!&#+7&!,/&)"&2!,&.-%&1,)/%7&/!&-,++)+5&2!,-&own business, go to http://ktdl.co.uk/newbusinessprogramme.aspx for more information and to check if you’re eligible to enrol on this fully funded programme; or contact John MacPhie, MD of Key Training and Development Limited on (0151) 324 5526 or at [email protected]

Statistics also show that 1 in 3 businesses fail within 3 years with the main cause being poor planning and preparation so, to avoid adding to those numbers, join this programme known as “Big Enterprise in Communities” and get advice, guidance, training and support – to help you launch your business asap or at some time in the future. You can aim to startup on a fulltime or parttime basis. Taking part in the programme is completely free and places no obligation whatsoever on participants.

Listen to the '!-71&2!,&,1%&'(%+&2!,&%O83.)+&2!,-&$!+#7%+$%I&)"&2!,&1.2& );4& +!/& $!+#7%+/& 2!,-&4)+7&')33& #+7& %O.483%1& /!&8-!A%&2!,-&8!)+/9&:"&2!,&1.2&42&$!+#7%+$%&)1&)48-!A)+5&/(%+& 2!,-& 4)+7& ')33& .31!& #+7& %O.483%1& /!& 8-!A%& 2!,-&point. Either way your mind will give you example to prove what you tell it.

Give yourself a chance and tell yourself good things and back that up with some good actions and use them as building blocks. Don’t forget it’s an inside job, Take the risk and break the shackles.
