Year End ResultsThe much awaited newsletter for 2013 is finally here. The year where our

achievements speak for themselves is a testament of the hard work and effort by all employees. The timely completion of overhaul 2013 with zero injury earlier in the year was just one of the highlights of this year. The Introduction of TPM (Total Productive Management) is another step towards achieving excellence through employee engagement. The gradual im-plementation of this methodology will no doubt bring the best out of us all.

Our efforts were also recognized by other independent bodies as our Com-pany was awarded with fire & safety award, CSR Business Excellence award, Environmental Excellence Award and best learning organization award. These awards clearly outline the high standard we maintain at our Company.

Our CSR efforts continued through-out the year. Following our support to victims of natural disasters that had hit Pakistan in earlier years, Our Company did not shy away from supporting fel-low countrymen when earth quake hit the province of Baluchistan in 2013. Our support for Family educational services (FESF), Karachi United Federation, WWF and AKU continued as per norm.

While 2013 had been a challenging year, we did celebrate our hard work with Musical evening and other social activi-ties at the plant site which provided us an opportunity to spend some leisure time with our fellow employees.

Lastly, on behalf of the editorial team, I apologize for the delayed publication of this newsletter. However with your continued support, we will be publishing the newsletter every quarter from this year again. Having said this, I would once again like to thank you for your support and encouragement shown towards “Life @ Lotte Chemical Pakistan” and hope you continue sharing your success and achievement with us. a

by emphasizing that the inception of TPM is destined to actualize collabo-ration between different functions by an amalgamation of team-working, continuous improvement, and good working practices. Mr. Asif Saad in-sisted that TPM is initiated as a “top down” exercise, but only implement-

ed successfully via “bottom-up” par-ticipation. In this direction, he high-lighted that TPM implementation can considerably contribute towards improvement in organizational be-havior in the manufacturing business transcending world class competi-tiveness.

Paraxylene is the principal raw mate-rial of the PTA manufacturing pro-

cess and is stored in an aboveground storage tank at plant site. Paraxylene is an extremely combustible liquid and ad-equate containment is essential for plant safety. A serious safety threat was posed when planned inspection revealed flaws which had developed on the storage tank’s roof due to localized corrosion.

The inspection team developed a comprehensive Inspection & Repair plan which was vetted by a certified authority.

The plant was shutdown on 23 Jan-uary and started after 21 days on

14 February,The Production department’s

achievements related to overhaul planning, execution and completion of tasks, these were appreciable and noteworthy.

The targets of overhaul (safe and zero injury, completion within pre-defined time period and within pre-estimated cost) were successfully achieved.

Good planning includes nomina-tions of area to shift teams, organi-zation chart, development of job list, isolation plans, safe job handover / takeover proce-dures, major job reviews, slip plate registers, rescue plans, ordering of misc. items (Job isolation tags, Job identification tags, decontamination tags, safety equipment tags, hoses, chains, locks, jigs & fixtures) ,shutdown /start-up bar charts, major jobs / equipments handover timelines, dispensations, shift rotas, decontamination bay loca-tion & its operation, training of new PTW / Hot permit issuers .

Awareness sessions were ar-ranged at Plant site for shift teams for refresher of PTW system and last overhaul safety statistics .Production department overhaul coordinator and

senior managers conducted the ses-sion.

In this overhaul, 1401 total jobs (including LWRs / EWRs and Co-Gen.) were attended which is a record num-ber of jobs executed. Out of total jobs, 728 jobs were executed by mainte-nance, 364 jobs by Instruments, 289 jobs by Electrical, 5 Mod. Jobs by Proj-ect and 15 jobs by misc. disciplines.

The 631 jobs were attended on Oxidation (Mech. = 434, Instr. = 159, Elect. = 35, Project = 3 ), similarly 333 jobs on Purification (Mech. = 205, In-str. = 86, Elect. = 37, Project = 2, Misc.

= 3), 309 jobs on Utilities Plant (Mech. = 64, Instr. =50, Elect. =

183, Misc.= 15) and 128 jobs (Mech. = 25, Instr. =69, Elect.= 34) were attended at the Co-

Generation Plant.Total numbers of vessel en-

tries at OX, Pure and Utilities Plants were 34, 14 and 08 respectively.

Plant was de-classified after 44 hours of shutdown that was another milestone, previously 48 hours were required for de-classification. In this overhaul, a new concept of ‘Area Block’ as an initiative was introduced that helped in reducing a number of slip plates for vessel entries, resulting in reduced cost, manpower resource and early handover of equipments.

OX and Pure Plants were decon-

taminated in a skillful and professional manner; no surprises or upsets have been seen during jobs and equipments handover. Almost every vessel was found to be neat, clean and free of chemical smell and leftover powder lumps.

Major jobs at OX Plant included TA Dryer repair, PAC rotor replacement / overhauling, PAC electronic Protonic auto control system changeover with Siemens SCAUT system, inspection / deblocking of vent header. While at Pure, PTA Dryer inspection, reactor catalyst replacement activity, Pre-heaters HP jetting. Similarly at Utili-ties, Paraxylene tank roof and internal repair, cooling tower basin cleaning, Boilers A/B inspection.

Another major job included the migration project of DCS system. New DCS commissioned in this overhaul 2013 and all logistics of the plant was verified by team. By using the new DCS, the Plant was started safely in time without delays.

All activities related with safe and efficient shutdown / start-up were car-ried out as per bar charts. No mis-op-eration and no equipment failure have been observed during these activities.

It was a landmark achievement at-tributed to great teamwork and hard work.

During overhaul 2013 it was found that Dehydration (DH) Column bottom cooler tubes were leaking and cooler

was not useable anymore. Plant can-not be operated without cooling DH column bottom stream and hence it was critical to have some solution. Since no spare cooler or tube bundle was available and manufacturing of new cooler and transportation on site was almost 6 month task , it was therefore a serious threat of pro-long plant outage.

To address the issue a used gas / steam heater was identified and through design checks on Aspen software declared suitable after minor modifications for this criti-cal duty (high temperature and high

flow Acetic Acid cooling). Subsequent to the initiative by technical team, a task

team was formed to install this retrofit exchanger on new loca-tion with new pipeline. This job was professionally executed at very fast pace by project &

workshop team enabling plant start up with this ex-

changer within overhaul time line.

Excellent initiative, professional and team

work skills of technical/ project /workshop team made it possible to avert a prolonged plant outage.

each Overhaul brings its own set of challenges and it is by successful

execution of all objectives that a team shows its true potential. Overhaul 2013 was no different as it had its own set of challenges. With each member of In-

spection team new in his role, safely and

successfully executing to date highest ever quantum of work for an Overhaul is a commendable effort. Extensive plan-ning went into successful execution of Overhaul 2013 with initia-tives such as a development of

a detailed pictorial work-

pack of all planned inspection activities to be carried out during Overhaul and taking inspection services from a single

contractor to improve management and operations. Rigorous prepa-

ratory area visits were carried out with area teams to clearly understand scope of work. In order to carry out inspection activities in a seamless manner a sys-tem of control sheets was reintroduced and for the first time all inspection activities were stewarded through it.

Several Major jobs were also supported by the Inspections during this Overhaul, such as CTA Dry-er and Paraxylene storage tank repairs. Inspection of CRU and Co-Gen plant equipment was also car-ried out for the first time to gather base line data.

During the overhaul of 2013, PAC control modernization project was

implemented during which old Siemens control panel with Protonic controller and other hardware was replaced with new Siemens SCAUT panel that was equipped with Siemens PLC S7-400H. SCAUT (Siemens Compressor Automa-tion) which is the latest of the Siemens compressor control system.

Project was a challenge to the Lotte Instrumentation team as the estimated time of completion suggested by Sie-mens was around 30 days, but after re-viewing our in house resources and their capabilities it was decided to take ownership of execution of bulk of pre commissioning work

before the arrival of Siemens engineer, thus with this proposal Siemens agreed to reduce the time of commissioning to 17 days.

The challenge began with the re-moval of all fields wiring from the old panel and shifting it out and bringing in

the new panel to its location with a tight squeeze thru an opening created in the wall of the PAC local control room.

Pre commissioning work was com-pleted in the agreed time frame during which 56 multi core cables connected to the old panel were marked and removed and after installing the new SCAUT pan-el all cables were re-connected as per new wiring diagram and 145 input and output loops were tested. All of these activities were done with Lotte own resource before the arrival of Siemens engineer at site. Further activities were done in supervision of Siemens engineer

during which all Controller actions were tested and PAC protection

systems comprising of Bentley

Nevada vibration system, over speed protection system and other trip ini-tiators were tested before handing over the machine to the operational team for normal operation.

The new SCAUT control system has an added advantage over the old Pro-

tonic control system in many ways as it is more user friendly for the operational team, as well trouble shooting of its hardware and control system has also become simpler. Now there is facility to views current trends of different con-trollers and viewing and logging alarms to perform corrective actions, while for the Instrumentation maintenance team there are Soft by-pass options for some of the trip initiators useful for online maintenance. The SCAUT system has the option to connect remotely to the on line diagnostic centre in Siemens Germany via DSL phone line who can analyse our system and provide help to trouble shoot any control and hardware related issue.

The SCAUT system has its benefits and will prove to deliver a more reliable PAC operation both in terms of op-eration and maintenance.

Good sup-port was pro-vide by the workshop team for rigging jobs and civil

work, IT department and production team simultaneously good efforts and workmanship was put in by Moham-med Khaliq, Mashood Adil, Hassan Ayaz, Syed Mahmood Ali and well supported by Hassan Shahid, Amir Azam and Irfan Ahmed. a

D1-401 is oxidation 1st crystallizer where HP solvent is sprayed in its

vapor line to knock down any escaping solids. This solvent is sprayed in the va-por line through an isolation valve which is connected with upstream header directly. On 12 April 2013, acetic acid leakage started from this valve ‘s body which was timely picked up by area op-erator during his routine field visit. As there was no isolation available on up-stream and downstream high pressure circuits, plant shut down was required to replace the valve. Uncontrolled leak-age from this valve could also have lead to a toxic release at plant. After detailed

analysis and hazards review, a solution came out which re-sulted in replacement of this valve without shutting down the plant. This not only saved produc-tion loss but a toxic Re-lease condi-tion was also averted.

Distributed Control System (DCS) of the plant plays the most critical

role in controlling the manufacturing process. It serves as the bridge between plant operations team and the equip-ment to be controlled. During the recent overhaul of plant, DCS has undergone a major upgrade from Emerson PROVOX to Emerson DeltaV 11.3 system. This migration project mainly focused on addressing the issue of technology ob-solescence which was directly affecting the reliability of the system.

The initial and most crucial chal-lenge in this project was to opt for such

a solution which would provide the most feasible way of smooth hardware and software transformation, and that too, in minimum plant outage. Hence, after much techno-commercial evaluation, DeltaV from Emerson Process Manage-ment was finalized.

Engineering of the system, followed by extensive Factory Acceptance Test by LCPL Instrumentation and Production teams was completed at Emerson Sin-gapore. The commissioning scope of the

project which required down time was planned in Overhaul 2013. Pre-overhaul preparations included installation of DCS cabinets in Rack Room, Core Out-station & Non-core Outstation. These cabinets house DCS controllers, I/O cards, servers, network switches and related hardware. Fiber optic cable was laid for interconnection of DCS equip-ment at various locations.

During the overhaul, configuration of new operator workstations and serv-ers was carried out along with OEM en-gineers. The most tedious job was to test and commission around

3,000 instrument loops after being transferred to new DCS cabinets. The Instrument team worked in coordina-tion with vendor team to achieve this milestone in record time. Issues were rectified on the spot and after critical trip testing and verification of interlocks in coordination with Production team, the PTA plant was started up on new DCS, marking the completion of Over-haul 2013.

Technology transition on such a

large scale and short time span is in-deed a praiseworthy achievement. The LCPL Instrumentation team performed extraordinarily well in the leadership of Amir Azam and Irfan Ahmed. In the forefront of various installation & com-missioning activities was Asif Farooqi, supported by a diligent team of techni-cians and apprentices. Umair Aleem, Hassaan Ayaz and Abdullah Bin Azhar also provided support and helped recti-fy post-commissioning issues. Valuable inputs were shared by all Production

team members at one point or the other.

The migra-tion to DeltaV DCS has given us a major leap ahead in the ever advancing auto-mation technol-ogies of today. In addition to the core advan-tages like avail-ability of spares and technical support from vendor, we are also benefitting from the perks that come along with the latest architecture of DCS in terms of software and hardware. Trou-bleshooting in-strument loops and online trac-ing of control logics have be-come more intu-itive. Moreover, advanced fea-tures of the new

DCS include auto tuning of PID loops, remote HART calibration of transmit-ters, user friendly trends on operator workstations, system-generated emails to concerned managers and web-based pages for worldwide viewing of critical data. After the completion of DCS mi-gration project, OEM is providing regu-lar technical support on issues that arise as the system matures. Hopefully, these minor bumps will be straightened out soon. a

Process Air Com-pressor Motor is

one of the most criti-cal motors installed at the plant. To ensure healthy and reliable op-eration of this motor, a proper preventive and inspection re-gime is prescribed by the ven-dor. These PMs require special tools and test equipments and are performed by trained per-sonnel sent by the OEM.

Field Service Engineer from ABB Switzerland, Mr. Matth-ias Ebner along with E&I staff carried out Level 2 inspection

of PAC motor, which is due after every 20,000 equivalent run hours, during the overhaul

2013. The presently in-stalled motor was commis-

sioned in OH-and this inspec-tion was critical as it was the first time the new PAC motor was inspected. Moreover, the outage of PAC motor is not pos-sible during normal plant op-eration, implying that missing this opportunity of inspection would have deferred the job till the next overhaul.

Transformers play a vital role in the overall electrical net-work at plant. Stepping down voltage levels to supply

power to industrial drives and maintaining that level are two most significant roles. Understandably, these units also re-quire appropriate maintenance regimes which include peri-odic testing, general maintenance and refurbishment if need be.

Plant overhauls and short shut downs give our electrical team the window to work on these transformers which are otherwise in service throughout the year. This past overhaul the electrical team, consisting of Talha Mustafa, Kam-ran Khan, Niaz Ahmed, Kashif Nadeem and HFC technicians, worked on mainte-nance and replacement of transformers at plant.

Some transformers were sent to Siemens for refurbishment while some others were replaced with already re-furbished spare transformers. The cor-

respondence with Siemens transformers refurbish-ment team was also done very well with lead times of half of what it normally is. Electrical testing of all 22 distribu-tion transformers was also carried out by Siemens engineers with necessary support provided by our team. The activity

was spread throughout the overhaul. It was planned very effectively by the elec-trical planning team and followed even better by the execution team with no lags encountered in the electrical outage plan.

A few unplanned issues were however encountered during the replacement job but were handled adeptly by the Electri-cal team. On such problem that was fre-quently encountered was the mechanical interchangeability of different transform-ers. The positioning of holes, gland plates, busbars and sizing of terminal boxes were different and it was a challenge to make adjustments and modifications in a limited frame of time. a

Hurdles come, crossed and for-gotten but the spirit and strat-

egies used are always remembered. LP steam is supplied to oxidation CTA drier through two flexible hoses. On 19 April 2013, steam leakage from one of the flexibles were reported. This situation posed a threat of cata-strophic failure of the flexible which

could have initiated a plant shut down for replacement job. The chal-lenge was to isolate the steam, stop the drier for 35 – 40 mins without plant shut down. Production team along with their engineering col-leagues worked out the problem and planned a smart

and safe algorithm for isolation and execution of the job. The team met

the challenge and saved a sure production loss.

It is evident that strate-gy, decision, teamwork and excellence can altogether

PLANT OUTAGE! a scary thought when targeting high production level’s to

meet business demands.A scenario developed on one of the

blind flange installed at Hp steam circuit. High pressure steam at 309 ºC and 98–bar pressure was observed to be gushing out of the flange. The leakage had an increas-ing trend and the rate was increasing with

every passing hour, if not contained it had the potential to force steam

isolation and consequently lead to plant shut down.

Accessing the hazards in-volved and the criticality of

job; plan was devised. The plan involved injection of a specialized

sealing compound having temperature hardening properties directly into the flange through the use of state of the art technology. A specialized clamp was fab-ricated in-house to facilitate injection and to serve as a holding medium for injection compound.

The plan was successfully implemented and the dedica-tion and commitment of the team resulted in sealing the joint completely.

Lotte Chemical Pakistan has always believed that a plant working at maxi-mum efficiency is the key to successful business. This is why millions of ru-

pees are spent every year to not only maintain equipment but to also improve it in any way possible. However, it is also possible to solve issues with just de-termination and initiative.

The mechanical maintenance team of the purification plant, led by Asim-ur-Rehman and assisted by Nadeem Mehdi, Kamran Khursheed and their team, were faced with a similar problem not long ago. The paddle thrower of the Container Back Fill Unit had been having issues with leakage of burnt pack-ing residue into the product. The contaminated product was not at par with the quality expected from Lotte Chemical Pakistan. As the current paddle thrower was now obsolete, spare parts or service were no longer readily avail-able. Modified paddle throwers however, were available in good condition. The quoted price for one of these paddle throwers was Rs. 18 million. However the maintenance team was insistent that a solution could be found that would not only save the company a lot of money but also leave the company more self reliant. Using the plans of the modified paddle throwers, an in-house

solution was found in form of Brass Labyrinth Seals, which replaced half of the packing, stopping the leakage.

The paddle thrower has been operating problem free since it was c o m m i s s i o n e d . Such initiatives are

what the engineering depart-ment must continue strive for.

recent plant overhaul was packed with new challenges and the opportunities to prove team’s worth, with CTA

dryer tyre replacement and internal repairs works on top of the list.

Tyre replacement, an activity which had never been dealt by the LCPL team, was of critical nature as the reliabil-ity of dryer and productivity of plant depended on it.

Considering the challenge a dedicated team was com-missioned to plan and execute this activity with primary fo-cus on safe and successful completion of the job. Numerous preprational activities were undertaken including develop-ment of dummy rollers to facilitate internal repairs and dry-er rotation without its tyre, which happens to be main load bearing. These activities involved prolong crane operation with simultaneous repair works of welding both internal and on dryer shell.

The entire activity needed close coordination between numerous interfaces to ensure smooth maintenance with-out delay on any front.

Through dedicated team effort, entire job including in-ternal repairs and tyre replacement was completed within the defined time line and without any compromise on qual-ity.

reverse engineering has become a very useful for engineers. This was why the purification plant maintenance team decided

to develop an alternate source for Sundyne pump spare parts, us-ing a credible supplier in South Korea. As the equipment in ques-tion was critical to the operation of the plant it was necessary that a comprehensive technical evaluation be carried out to ensure that there was no compromise in quality. The company selected for this task was Samjeong Turbine. Samjeong is a highly reputed company with a rich history in reverse engineering.

The inducer, impeller, high and low speed shafts of gearbox and journal bearings of idler and driven shafts were sent to South Ko-

rea so that Samjeong could start the reverse engineering process..

Any part to be reverse engineered was inspected closely; drawings were produced, verified and cor-rected if necessary. All the materials used in the pro-

duction of these parts were investigated and verified. The Purchase department also played an extremely im-

portant part during the import and export phases of the pro-cess. When produced, the quoted price for the reverse engineered parts was a fraction of the price of that of the OEM parts, resulting in almost 80% savings. The ordered parts have since been used in the refurbishment of a Sundyne pump which has been operating at maximum efficiency. This has prompted further dealings with Samjeong Turbine. As the prices for original spare parts go up, it has become necessary to turn to reverse engineering. The Engineering and Commercial teams should be credited for this remarkable cost saving initiative.

Challenging the status quo should be the mean for any organization that wants to excel. An organiza-

tion must not underestimate the power of a team un-der difficult circumstances; it’s the combined effort of teams that generates the results beyond one’s imagina-tion.

Challenging a decade-long practice and providing a better alternative with additional savings, operational, maintenance, effluent handling and treatment ease would not have been possible without the collective relentless efforts put in by the team from the Opera-tions & Technical departments.

In order to reduce variable cost, a combined initiative was taken by tech-nical and operations team to replace the candles washing media from Acetic Acid to Hot Flush Water for PTA Mother Liquor Filter (M1-1603). The change is expected to reduce the cost associated with maintenance, filter elements changeover, inspection, and will also help in increasing equipment availability. Improvements were made possible by ulitilizing the provision available in design rather than going for huge capital investments.

The initiative was first employed as a controlled trial. Successful implementation of the trial since June-2013 is an exemplary achievement as no other PTA plant is utilizing this methodology.

UPS CR is one of the most critical electrical equipments installed

at the plant. It provides uninterrupted power to the plant’s Distributed Control System (DCS), Emergency Shutdown (ESD) System, MIS and core plant field instrumentation. The DCS provides con-trol of plant parameters to the board-men for smooth plant operation; while ESD is installed to ensure safe plant shutdown in case of emergency. Thus the criticality of UPS CR cannot be un-dermined and it’s ever reliable opera-tion has to be ensured. The already in-stalled UPS was old and moving towards obsolescence; also it had only single uninterrupted power source. Electrical team, adapting to the new technology, initiated the procurement of a new UPS with redundant supplies, and modified design. The new UPS employees active load sharing, which means two indepen-dent UPSs share load equally, ensur-ing both smooth plant operation and safe plant shutdown in case of emergency.Since this type of UPS was being installed for the first time at Lotte Chemical plant, the work was comprehensively planned well before the commissioning. To cater to the space constraint in the UPS room, a modification was carried out by electrical team on the new UPS. A 400 mm cubical was removed and its internal components were relocated. This modification, an initiative taken by Electrical team, has prevented break-ing of walls of OCRB for its rigging, con-

struction of temporary walls, relocation of lighting JBs and scaffoldings.

The commissioning of this new UPS was carried out during Overhaul – 2013 in the presence of Gutor Field Service Engineer, Mr. Richard Borja. Some of the jobs, including phase wise shifting of the new UPS to the site and cable laying etc, were carried out prior to the overhaul to save up on time during the overhaul. The whole job was executed with remark-

able pace and efficiency due to excellent planning and teamwork. The efforts of Mr. Muhamad Waqas, Ms Sumayyah Waheed and Mr. Imranullah Khan and his team, especially Muhammad Af-zal, during the planning and execution phases are commendable in ensuring

the prompt and timely completion of the extensive works.

This UPS is one of its kinds and none of the UPSs installed at the plant are sim-ilar to it in operation and performance. This system employees the philosophy of redundancy & parallel operation; and thus ensures uninterrupted operation of critical equipments. A small training ses-sion for the team was also carried out so that the electrical team becomes accus-

tomed to this new technology. With the commissioning of this new UPS the idea of adapting to new technology to guar-antee reliability of critical equipments has been practically implemented in the system by electrical section.

a

Commissioning of new UPS CRAdapting to new Technology to enhance reliability

Process Air Compressor (C1-113) and Expander (C1-155) are critical equipments for operation of plant and

require major maintenance due to continuous operation. During recent plant overhaul, the team was faced with a surprising situation when crack was observed on the rear shroud of 5th stage im-peller.

Maintenance team while as-sessing the situation came to the conclusion that since PAC is dy-namically balance machine there-fore only 5th stage pinion assembly cannot be replaced or else there will be a persistent threat of machine fail-ure during routine plant operations.

This new development had the potential of seriously ham-pering overhaul time line as all the pre-overhaul

preparations were compromised. The maintenance team however, rose up the challenge and devised an alter-

nate execution plan with all criti-cal resources deputed round the clock along with a vigilant moni-toring team to ensure quick deci-sion making. Entire machine was

dismantled and assembled again within the defined time line while

ensuring quality of workmanship and yet again proving that this team

can achieve great height.a

Design conformance of Industrial piping systems and their analysis

requires stringent compliance to Inter-national standards and codes. Piping flexibility analysis software is an essen-tial design tool in this respect. CAESAR II is a state of the art piping flexibility anal-ysis software being used by the LCPL

Design team in ensuring code compli-ance. The available version, i.e. CAESAR II 4.0, was procured in 2003, but numer-ous updations in codes & standards had rendered most of its tools and features inapplicable.

As a result of excellent team work between the Inspections, IT & Com-

mercial teams, an upgradation initiative of available software to latest version was undertaken to ensure all current code compliance cases are met during analysis. Moreover this was done at half the price of a new one through identifi-

cation and application of a li-cense up gradation plan by

the LCPL Inspection and Registry team. The new version 6.10 of CAESAR II has cutting-edge graph-

ics rendering capabilities, advanced analysis options,

and is compliant with the latest en-gineering codes and standards. This initiative has further enforced LPCL team’s design capabilities and will result in significant savings as flex-ibility analysis services from exter-nal contractors shall no longer be required.

The protection relays installed at the 11kV SWBD01 were in service

since plant commissioning. With the pas-sage of time and upgradation in technol-ogy, these relays had become obsolete. The spares and techni-cal backup support had also depleted consid-erably during the past few years. The relays manufacturer had rec-ommended new Mi-COM protection relays as a replacement to the installed relays. There-fore, a phase-wise plan was developed for the replacement of pro-tection relays. Phase 1 and majority of Phase 2 relays were success-fully migrated in the previous overhauls. The replacement of protection relays at 11kV SWBD01 was successfully carried out during this over-haul, which included replacement of the existing protection relays MCGG 82 i.e.

“3-phase overcurrent plus earth fault with instantaneous elements” with a compatible MiCOM P122 protection relay.

The activity was con-

tracted out to Schneider Electric Paki-stan Limited, who replaced and then tested the relays. The Schneider team

along with the support of Muhammad Waqas and Imranullah Khan completed

the activity successfully within the planned time frame. In this way, the protection system is upgraded to

current technology ensuring reliability and system improvement.

Availability of emergency generators in case of partial or complete power outage is very essential for plant opera-

tion as these supply power to critical power load. Taking the opportunity of Overhaul 2013, electrical maintenance team responded brilliantly to the expectations of business, resulted in successful rectification of over-speeding and tripping issues of EDGs and BLG.

The generators were behaving abnormally for about six months before the plant overhaul; the engines were over-speeding on start-up and then tripping on over frequency. Also, load sharing behaviour between the generators was abnormal. The probable cause was the Load Sharing Modules (LSMs) on the EDGs and BLG. Therefore, in the presence of service engineer from Woodward International Singapore; calibration of LSMs was performed to achieve the required behaviour. Although it was difficult to get load for the genera-tors since the plant overhaul was in full swing, with most of the drives de-energized. However, with full support from opera-tions team the minimum requirement of 50% load was eventu-ally met. Calibration for all modules was done repeatedly after

testing them on-load and then tweaking the settings to ac-complish desired results.

Undoubtedly, dedicated efforts and round the clock working of Electrical team consisted of Mu-hammad Waqas, Abid Qayyum and Muhammad Sohaib Iqbal along with the vendor engineer re-

sulted in the diagnosis and the rectification of the issues that were interrupting the normal operation of

EDGs and BLG. a

Internship is a mandatory part of education in most of the universities. Hence, corporate sector is bridging this need of students to meet this

requirement. Every year, we absorb healthy number of students as Interns in the company mainly from engineering discipline.

This gives on-the-job training to students, which helps them to learn from practical environment. Generally, the internship works as an ex-change of services for experience between the student and his or her em-ployer.

Cryptograms are simple-substitution ciphers where every letter of the alphabet has been switched. Your task is to use pattern recognition and your grammar and vocabulary abilities to deci-pher the hidden quotes.

Hint: start with the 1, 2 and 3 letter words, and remember that the most common letters in the English language are E-T-A-I-O-N, in roughly that order. Good luck!
