We know LifeLong Learning is an important lifeline for hundreds of people in this community. We are honored that you rely on us to fuel your intellectual curiosity and foster cherished friendships. We are proud to be part of your lives, and promise to continue bringing you the programs and social connections that make life better – all the time. Challenging times just invite us to be more creative about how we do it. And you have our word that your safety will always come first. We look forward to welcoming you once again this fall as LLS launches its 31st year – and we all explore the “new normal” together!

At present, LLS plans for our fall classes to be delivered through a combination of both online and in person teaching. Our larger classes – lectures – will all be conducted online. We hope to conduct our smaller classes in person in the Yoder Barn. We plan to do so as safely as possible through proper distancing and by adding sections of classes to reduce the number of members in each.

We understand that each of us has a different comfort level in response to this health crisis, and some of our members also deal with health challenges that weaken their physical defenses. We know you will rejoin traditional in-person activities at different times. We hope our virtual opportunities, and assistance with the new tools to support them, will keep you connected to LLS and engaged with the people and programs you love. Again – your health and safety come first, so we will be watching conditions in the community closely and our plans may change in response.

Online learning will be offered through a free and user-friendly computer program. We will provide free training for this program for all of our members so that everyone can access our classes with ease and confidence.

The LifeLong Learning Society of Christopher Newport University is a

membership organization dedicated to persons of retirement age who seek

opportunities for learning in an environment of sharing

and fellowship. There are no requirements as to previous

educational experience. Intellectual curiosity is the only admission

requirement. Managed by and for its members, LLS is a program of the Office of University

Advancement and is an affiliate of the Elderhostel Institute Network. Through a variety of activities – including lectures, courses, study and discussion groups, lunches, dinners and field trips – persons of diverse backgrounds come together to share a common interest in learning. There are no exams or grades in the courses, although some courses include assigned readings and the possible purchase of a text. All persons of retirement age are encouraged to join if they are interested in being challenged by new ideas in the company of other eager learners. The LLS shares its program with the community by participating in joint learning efforts with other educational and research institutions, retirement groups, industries and museums and by co-sponsoring two annual conferences.

Most Americans today know very little about the details of the Pacific War or the exotic and faraway theaters in which the war was conducted. This course explores the strategic roots of the conflict and focuses on the two major theaters of operations for American forces: The Pacific Ocean Areas theater, commanded by Adm. 31. Communication, Dialogue and Public Civility Thurs., 9-10:15 a.m. 10-week course

What is communication? Is it just a symbol using system, a mechanical process that we engage in out of necessity or simply a biological necessity? What if communication were more than this? What if the basic imperative driving our communication was to know and to be known? How might that imperative change the way we see ourselves as a part of the communication process and how that process served as a lynchpin of society and culture? This course will investigate an orientation to communication rooted in the notion that communication is first and foremost a human enterprise. From that place, we turn to our larger role in society and ask the question: how does changing the way we communicate change the way we engage as a public? Instructor: Dr. Sean Connable, CNU
