Education in emergency
What we are doing right now is (for panic + "Panic-gogy"
pedagogy). Sean Michael Morris of the School of
Educaon and Human Development at the University of
Colorado, Denver and the Director of Digital Pedagogy
Lab, has come up with this tongue-in-cheek term. "It's
not really realisc to think that students can just show up
and start taking class at the same me every day in an
online environment," he adds. It calls for understanding
students' praccal constraints. A learner may or may not
have any digital device. Some may only have
smartphones. Accessibility of internet is a big challenge
in our country and so on.
True. Words of cauon like these are important. But
every challenge presents us with opportunies as well.
Let’s take a quick look at the situaon of educaon the
world over in the face of this pandemic. As of today, a
country-wide closure of 188 schools has been
reported. As of 3 April 2020, over 421 million learners
were out of school due to school closures in response to
COVID-19. On April 5, 2020, UNESCO reports there are
1,576,021,818 affected learners which is 91.3% of the
total enrolled learners. To visualize the phenomenal
spread or evoluon of closure of schools worldwide,
watch the UNESCO site to get the latest updates as
Global monitoring of school closure caused by COVID-19.
This is unprecedented. And, the challenge it poses is also
enormous. So, how about considering this challenge as
an opportunity to shi focus from ‘Schooling only at
schools’ to ‘School-Home collaboraon for learning’,
says a recent and elaborate CBSE communicaon.
This is the me for making a major, though forced,
transion to digital learning. It is the me, suggests
CBSE, to embrace technology. Most of the schools have
already gone digital, many of them in spirit, so to say.
Knowledge and availability of quality digital resources
remains a challenge though. Not that they don’t exist.
Many of them may be known to schools. But they are
sporadic. So, here we bring a curated list of some of the
best resources available for schools at such a crucial
juncture.
Let us begin with offering free access to Scoolnet India
two of its most popular and effecve soluons from its
stack. With its AI powered and plaorm agnosc
soluon called ‘Geneo’, Home is the New School now!

Apart from these, CBSE has come up with a list of
resources. to tap on all these resources and Use this me
communies to develop creave and innovave
teaching and learning materials. It has acvity-based
worksheets; projects that can be done at home;
acvies that can generate curiosity; arts, sports and
music integrated learning modules; online classes to
build capacies of teachers to open up their minds to
creavity, etc.
Further, of educaonal UNESCO provides a curated list
applicaons, plaorms and resources aimed towards
helping parents, teachers, schools and school
administrators to facilitate student learning and provide
psychosocial support during periods of school closure.
While we will have to figure out how to avoid the pialls
of ‘Panicgogy’, these , we hope will provide resources
you with some great digital learning opportunies that
you need most in these extraordinary mes.

In the face of the pandemic and the consequent lockdown, online teaching is the new imperave for contemporary teaching. All over schools and colleges, people are switching to online teaching mode.
The shi from tradional classrooms to virtual classrooms presents many challenges. Some of them are the quality of resource materials used, the limits and apprehensions of using technology, the technical accessibility, the scheduling of classes, the availability of learners, etc. Last but not the least, to keep students interested and engaged is a major challenge. This obviously calls for a different set of pedagogical approach well-suited to an appropriate technological support. The students may find themselves in a new learning and interacve environment. They may also feel overwhelmed or alienated as they move from a familiar way of learning.
Many online tools, theories and approaches for learning have come up with an instant soluon. While surfing the web, you may come across various models of teaching that have come up which suit a specific set of audience. It is not the responsibility of a teacher to 'fix everything', since many students will be beyond the scope of influence of a teacher in a virtual classroom, so it is important to develop empathy and understanding for the learners and then support them wherever needed.
There are certain prompts to consider while you are developing a lesson/ content for your virtual classroom.
General Issues: - - Who are the target students for whom you are
designing? (age, gender, level, etc.)
- In which ways are they involved in the overall lesson? (student-centric approach)
- Whom they may reach out for help to facilitate their learning? (parents, siblings, classmates, etc.)
- How can a virtual class sll maintain the elements of a class being taught physically by a teacher? (creang engaged classrooms)
Digital literacies, connecvity, accessibility issues: -
- What physical sengs might be needed when engaging with the students?
- How comfortable are they with the Internet?
- Have they previously aended any solo online sessions?
Now it may seem difficult to develop digital lessons if
one has to get answers for the above-menoned
prompts to get started. Well, it is not as much difficult as
it seems. You need not start from the scratch. It is simple
to use the exisng resources with some customizaon.
Here is how!
The acvity cum lesson plan which we have presented
here is not about finding the exact soluon; it is to rather
explore a plaorm to create digital lessons i.e. TED Ed's
Lesson Creator. It requires you to register for the
account, while it is a free and open plaorm to discover,
design and share your digital lesson plans with your
students and peers.

One major strength of this plaorm is that you can reuse

Flipgrid is a Microso
acquired, free, social
learning plaorm that
engages learners through
video-based discussions.
Educators, learners, and
their families can use
Flipgrid at school or at home to stay connected and
share their connued learning experiences.
A teacher creates a "Grid" for the classroom or a group
of learners on . Each grid is like a www.flipgrid.com/
message board where the teacher posts a discussion
"Topic" with quesons to get started and then shares the
Flipgrid link or code with her students.
Students can download the Flipgrid app from the App
Store and Google Play Store. Then they can click the
Flipgrid link or enter the code shared by their educator
at Students can create videos and www.flipgrid.com.
post discussions and quesons in the app that appear in
a led grid display on the educator's screen. The default
video length is 90 seconds, but educators can adjust this
from 15 seconds up to 5 minutes. Students can
collaborate with their peers to create videos on a topic.
Each and every learner gets the opportunity to ask
quesons and parcipate in the discussions at anyme
and at any place.
Aer submission of a video, a student can't edit it
directly. If she needs to edit, she should download it first,
edit it in a video eding soware and again import it as a
new response. Videos can be shared with remote
teaching-learning soluons like Google Classroom or
Microso Team.

Stuck at home? Worried about children's study and
examinaon?
Going into a self-quaranne phase is keeping us
confined within our homes. It brings its own
complexies and challenges in our lives. However, there
are silver linings too. Today, we find that our world has
improved climac condions; rivers are gleaming, the
ozone layer is healing, polluon levels are declining. The
disturbed natural order is being restored. People are
working as one community to create solidarity. Similarly,
there are several opportunies waing for both-
teachers and students. We need to use this crisis to
rebuild, rejuvenate and rethink about many things.
Children's educaon is one of them.
How can children learn sing at home? This me, some
of us may have planned some excing heritage walks or
visit to a museum with our learners on the occasion of
the Students are World Heritage Day on April 18.
always so excited about excursions. True, physically
vising heritage sites or museums tremendously helps
in shaping our knowledge and developing an
understanding of the place. The lockdown and the post-
corona world thereaer, may not allow this to happen in
the near future. So, what can we do?
Here is what we can do. We can ulise this me for self-
preparaon. We can prepare a list of quesons, such as
what is heritage? What is the importance of cultural
heritage in a society? How can we save our heritage from
decadence? We can design pre-visit acvies. In fact,
children can sll 'visit' these heritage sites. Yes! think of a
virtual tour of the heritage sites and museums, not just
of India but of the world, for your students. Click to here

virtual tours of some of the amazing museums.
What does Heritage imply? The term heritage, unl the
beginning of the 20 century, meant an act of
inheritance. It is used to explicate the inheritance of
parental resources by an individual or a family. However,
towards the end of the 20 century, the word expanded
its meaning. Now, heritage means a wide range of things -
right from the material objects to non-material resources
which are oen linked with the identy of an ethnic
group, society or a naon.
Heritage also refers to the valuable achievements of the
past. Historic monuments are examples of the great feat
our ancestors achieved. Many of them have become our
naonal idenes. So are some tradions of drama,
songs, dance forms which are promoted and
documented. As the modern culture spreads far and
wide, we witness a rapid loss of folk culture, local
tradional forms like folk songs, performing art forms,
languages, culinary pracces, etc. They are all part of
our heritage. So we see that the noon of heritage is
very dynamic.
CBSE has developed a plan to popularise heritage
educaon in schools where teachers and students will
be a part of this program. They are also invited to
contribute to the process of content creaon, to share
their diverse experiences and knowledge. The heritage
educaon program explores the heritage of mulple
subjects, interpret the past for the future and recognizes
the contemporary tradions that affect not only the
present but also influence the future.

In this issue of Rubaroo, we bring to you a very
interesng queson from a pool of such myriad,
engaging quesons that students from across the
country have been asking us on our online learning app-
GENEO. So, this one is about the popular chicken first or
egg conundrum.
Which came first: the chicken or the egg?
It's that old riddle that's sparked many arguments
through the ages: was it the chicken or the egg that came
first? It's such a tricky queson because you need a
chicken to lay an egg, but chickens come from eggs;
leaving us with an intractable circle of clucky, feathery
life that apparently has no clear starng point.
Thankfully, there's no need to keep
over this forever. This is a riddle we can
with the tools of science—more
specifically, the principles of evoluonary biology.
So, let's get
cracking.
Kuk du koo...Rubaroo
Heritage educaon's objecve is to enrich learning.
Integrang the study of historical sites, landscapes,
structures and objects into the exisng curriculum will
not only enhance the knowledge of students about
heritage but also will promote them to develop an idea in
the direcon of conserving those heritages which are
threatened. This educaon program will help students to
understand the history and society and further this
understanding of the subject and concepts will help
them in inculcang the feeling of respect for diversity
and tolerance. So, the best way of achieving these
outcomes is by developing new concepts and
approaches on World Heritage Preservaon in the
curriculum.
Curriculum development is an academic endeavour
which demands research, tesng, and evaluaon. The
long-term objecve of the curriculum is to develop new
educaon concepts with an expectaon to conserve our
valuable World Heritage for the future. The new
curriculum has adopted a mul-disciplinary approach
where teachers of different disciplines such as
geography, history, language, science, etc can integrate
the elements of World Heritage educaon into the
classroom.
CBSE offers resources and support for various heritage
acvies like heritage walks and heritage clubs. Further,
the Ministry of Human Resources and the that of Culture
also provides great opportunies for heritage educaon.
In response to School closure we are providing here
some web-based resources for heritage educaon.

The good, old and famous Einstein's riddle... Who owns the fish? Puzzle:
There's nothing like a good riddle to smulate your mind and give you an excuse to channel your inner Sherlock Holmes. Sure, the thrill of solving puzzles may not give you the rush of a skydive, but regularly doing logic and crossword puzzles can keep your brain young as you age. And, they're just a lot of fun!
In this issue, you can take your problem-solving skills to the next level with a riddle that Albert Einstein invented himself. The story goes that Einstein wrote this complicated logic puzzle when he was a young man, and esmated that only two percent of the people who tried to solve it would successfully do so. While there isn't any solid evidence to confirm that Einstein created it—and somehow prophesied the exact number of people who would get it right—it's sll a mind-bending puzzle.
So here's the setup: There are five houses, each painted a different color. In each house lives a person with a different naonality. These five owners drink a certain type of beverage, smoke a certain brand of cigar, and keep a certain pet. No owners have the same pet, smoke the same cigar, or drink the same beverage.
And, here are the clues:Ÿ The Brit lives in the red houseŸ The Swede keeps dogs as pets
Ÿ The Dane drinks teaŸ The green house is on the le of the white houseŸ The green house's owner drinks coffeeŸ The person who smokes Pall Mall rears birdsŸ The owner of the yellow house smokes DunhillŸ The man living in the center house drinks milkŸ The Norwegian lives in the first houseŸ The man who smokes blends lives next to the one
who keeps catsŸ The man who keeps horses lives next to the man who
smokes DunhillŸ The owner who smokes BlueMaster drinks beerŸ The German smokes PrinceŸ The Norwegian lives next to the blue houseŸ The man who smokes blend has a neighbor who
drinks water
Take some me and think it over. Draw out each house. Make a chart for each category, if you want to get really detailed. (Trust us, you do!). Not all of us can be Einstein.
So, do you know who owns the fish? What, you think we'd just give away the answer? Hang in and stay tuned for the next issue for the answer and yet another brain-teaser.
