I am delighted to share the news of the affiliation of JGS Lifecare with Chelsea Jewish Lifecare. Our Board of Directors approved the affiliation in early September and the Chelsea team took over management of JGS. Our organizations are quickly assimilating, and I can already see the positive outcomes of this new partnership.

Our relationship with Chelsea is not new. Over the past five years, through our strategic plan, we have explored future business lines, programs and strategic relationships that would allow us to best serve the needs of our elders and our aging population of baby boomers. This led to a commitment to become more active in the short-term stay rehabilitation business and a quest to seek the best possible models of care to serve our community for generations to come. This quest brought me and members of our board to visit the Leonard Florence Center for Living in Chelsea, MA, part of Chelsea Jewish Lifecare, where we met Barry and Adam Berman; Betsy Mullen, their chief operating officer; and their phenomenal management team.

The Leonard Florence Center, built in 2010, was the first urban Green House in the nation, consisting of a six-story building containing ten households. Each household features its own kitchen, residential finishes and amenities, an abundance of sunlight and a sense of community and home. Gone is the central nursing station, and individualized care is provided by a consistent team. Two of the houses are devoted to caring for individuals with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) and one for MS (multiple sclerosis). The Leonard Florence Center has

been recognized throughout the world as an innovative model of care for seniors. In 2013 this model became our inspiration for the Sosin Center for Rehabilitation, which opened in 2016.

We also toured their Chelsea Jewish Nursing Home, which is similar to our Leavitt Family Jewish Home. The Chelsea team renovated and converted this once traditional facility into inviting households, each with its own kitchen and spacious gathering places. Chelsea’s transformation is incredibly important to us as we finalize our plans for Phase II of Project Transformation and explore our options to renovate the Leavitt Family Jewish Home to a household model.

In 2017, with the help of our interim CEO, Steve McPherson, the board, understanding the complexities of our changing health care system, realized the benefits of partnering with a similar organization to ensure our future strength and success. Our due diligence led us to the conclusion that Chelsea would be the perfect partner. Chelsea shares our mission, vision and values, and has achieved our desired goal… the radical transformation and redefinition of what senior care can look like and the experience we can offer our elders.

I wish to express my thanks to the JGS Board for embracing this bold move. Our combined experience and resources will ensure our stability and future growth for generations to come. I look forward to keeping you informed of our progress as we move forward!

It gives me great pleasure to assume the position of CEO of JGS Lifecare. I am honored to continue JGS’ proud legacy of providing exceptional care to seniors and their families in western Massachusetts. The affiliation of JGS Lifecare and Chelsea Jewish Lifecare (CJL) represents an exciting milestone for both organizations, presenting great opportunities for mutual growth and the ability to have a significant impact on the quality of care we deliver to our seniors.

I believe that JGS and CJL are kindred-souls, both born in the early 1900s with a shared mission to care for the frail Jewish elders of our respective communities. Blessed over the years with visionary board leadership and community support, both always looked to the future to provide for the needs of the elderly, continuing to grow and expand services to people of all faiths and backgrounds. As full continuums of care and pioneers of the small house model of Green House, CJL and JGS have recognized that care for our elders is not stagnant, but must continue to evolve to deliver the highest possible care for our elders and meet their changing needs and expectations.

Given the complexities of our ever-changing health care system, our affiliation makes good business sense. Together we bring over 200 years of health care experience and leading practices to share, and the drive to be centers of excellence. This is a terrific opportunity for us to combine our expertise and resources to better serve the growing senior population across the state of Massachusetts.

I want to express my sincere gratitude to the Board of Directors and staff of JGS for the opportunity to work with you, and my excitement for the advancements we can achieve together. I am so fortunate to be able to get up every morning and engage in work that I am passionate about. I am also fortunate to be able to work with my son, Adam, who shares this passion and serves as president of CJL and now, JGS.

The lead article in this issue of Lifelines permits Adam and me to share our vision for the future of JGS and CJL. In coming articles and communications, I look forward to introducing you to the members of our team who share our passion and our pledge to provide the highest quality of compassionate care to the people we serve.

We are grateful for your continued support and I look forward to hearing from you. I can be reached at [email protected] or 617-887-0001.

I am thrilled to join JGS as its new president and welcome JGS to the Chelsea Jewish Lifecare family. As many have reflected, our affiliation makes a great deal of sense, given the complexities of our changing and evolving health care system, and given we share the same mission, philosophy, values and goals. Both JGS and Chelsea strive to provide the highest possible quality of care in an increasingly challenging health care environment of limited reimbursements and escalating costs. Our shared experiences will be the key to a long and successful relationship!

I do not take this task lightly and recognize that JGS has a strong legacy of caring and tradition of excellence to uphold that has spanned over 100 years. Chelsea, too, has served its community for 100 years (we will be celebrating our centennial in 2019) and is dedicated to consistently providing high quality, compassionate care. I am proud to share that all three of our skilled nursing facilities have received five-star quality ratings from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and are recognized among the top nursing homes not only in Massachusetts, but throughout the country. Over the years, we have developed a management system that has succeeded in achieving measurable goals and very positive outcomes. I am so excited to bring together the Chelsea and JGS executive teams, to learn from each other and implement these systems, and help assure that JGS is the Center of Excellence it has long been known for.

Each JGS employee will play an important role in building the combined organization and assuring our success. In early September, members of the CJL leadership team met with the senior leadership team of JGS to begin the integration and identify our long- and short-range goals. In addition to sustaining strong financial performance, our highest priority is that JGS be a Magnet Organization with a culture of caring and a standard of care that attracts the highest quality staff and is the most sought after resource for care by our community. This means that the Leavitt Family Jewish Home will again become a five-star facility known for its exemplary care delivered by a consistent team of JGS staff who have a deep understanding of our residents and can provide personalized care. Together we will continue the work of Project Transformation to ensure that JGS programs and services evolve to best meet the needs of our elderly.

Health care is a challenging and changing enterprise, and our goals are ambitious, but I know we have the dedication, commitment, systems and resources to make them a reality. I look forward to working with the JGS Board of Directors, staff and the community to continue their long and stellar reputation for excellence.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I look forward to getting to know you and working with you. I can be reached at [email protected] or 978-471-5100.

PARTNERS IN REDEFINING AGING ACROSS MASSACHUSETTSJGS Lifecare and Chelsea Jewish Lifecare

Beyond simply caring for our elders, JGS Lifecare has been on a journey to redefine aging by providing personalized care in settings that feel like homes not hospitals, by creating meaningful experiences for our residents and by maximizing elderhood. We are proud to now be affiliated with Chelsea Jewish Lifecare (CJL), an organization with the same commitment.

Barry Berman, chief executive officer, and his son, Adam Berman, president, share their thoughts about moving our combined organizations forward in achieving these goals.

Barry: I had been running assisted living and nursing home complexes for nearly a quarter of a century before experiencing a truly eye-opening event that forever changed how I would think about senior care.

I saw my mother, a dynamic and outgoing woman, in our nursing home recuperating after experiencing a massive stroke and pneumonia, and I could barely recognize her. She suddenly looked old and lifeless, and the transformation shocked me.

I knew then that we needed to completely upend how we care for our elderly and reimagine the institutional setting. My team and I embraced the Green House model of care, with its small households and dedicated staff, and set about creating the first urban Green House in the United States, the Leonard Florence Center for Living, which opened in 2010.

We continue to reimagine what life can be like for the elderly throughout our organization and across the country. We next adopted the Green House model in our legacy nursing home, Chelsea Jewish Nursing Home. We got rid of the central kitchens and nursing stations and created households that look and feel like real homes.

We look forward to making the same changes at the Leavitt Family Jewish Home through Phase II of Project Transformation, sharing our experiences and lessons learned to help transform the delivery of care at JGS to this progressive model.

Adam: Our vision is a world where high-quality, service-enriched care for seniors is available in every community and to every person. To realize that vision, we are determined to serve as an example and role model for other organizations.

We found a great partner in JGS Lifecare. Like Chelsea, the leaders at JGS recognized the importance of changing the fundamental dynamic of how we, as a society, care for

our elders. This is demonstrated most literally in the design and construction of the Sosin Center for Rehabilitation, which follows the Green House model, as does our Leonard Florence Center.

Barry: These changes are not easy to make. Nursing homes have been run the same way for decades and are subject to many complex government regulations in order to qualify for government payments such as Medicare and Medicaid.

It’s often not feasible to rebuild a nursing home following the Green House model, but it is possible to come close, which is what we did in the Chelsea Jewish Nursing Home and what we are working toward for the Leavitt Family Jewish Home.

Adam: Beyond changing the way we deliver care, we are changing the way we think about aging itself. Aging is often talked about as a decline, with both physical and cognitive limitations. We don’t think that way. We believe individuals can have some of their most meaningful experiences

as they age, if given the opportunity.

Through CJL, we provide a continuum of post-acute and long-term care options for seniors and the severely disabled. We have three nursing homes, two assisted living residences, independent living, an adult day health program, a home health agency and a hospice agency.

JGS Lifecare’s campus of care includes a nursing home, short-term rehabilitation home, an assisted living residence, independent living, an adult day health program and a home health and hospice agency. Combined, we are now among the largest senior living nonprofits in Massachusetts.

The common synergy between the organizations will be the key to a long and successful relationship whose ultimate beneficiary is our senior population. We’re focused on making our communities across the state feel like home, with all our facilities benefiting from the Green House movement.

By Susan Kimball Halpern, vice president of development and communications

In September 2008, I had the pleasure of a visit from Barbara Binsky, of blessed memory, who wanted to discuss a gift to JGS Lifecare. She was working on her estate plan and wanted to talk about leaving a percentage of her estate to JGS to honor her grandparents, Mary and Ben Albert, as well as some other local charities. Barbara made her commitment and joined our Planned Giving Society, our Circle of Honor.

I was interested to hear that Barbara’s grandmother, Mary Albert, was one of the original founders of the home. Her grandmother was one of 18 women who, back in the early 1900s, met in each other’s kitchens to discuss their vision for a place to house and care for their community’s elderly.

Barbara’s grandfather, Ben, would join the meetings as their scribe, as he was the only one able to write. From their discussions came plans to raise funds for the purchase of a home for just that purpose.

In 1912, that group of 18 women and one man went door-to-door through the neighborhoods of Springfield selling raffle tickets at ten cents apiece. These members of the Rechamo Silverman Organization sold enough raffle tickets to establish the Daughters of Zion Home for the Aged at 67 Massasoit Street in Springfield.

Barbara took great pride in her grandparents’ role in helping establish what is today JGS Lifecare. She was also grateful for the care provided to her mother, Anna (Albert) Binsky, as a resident in the home for five years in the 1990s. When asked why she wanted to include JGS in her estate, Barbara commented that “JGS is a good thing.”

Funding the Future

Now ten years later, with Barbara’s passing, JGS has received a significant bequest from her estate. Through

this bequest, Barbara has continued her grandparents’ tradition by helping us evolve to meet the needs of our community’s elders.

The funds will be used to support Phase II of Project Transformation and our plans to de-institutionalize care in the Leavitt Family Jewish Home. Traditional nursing units will be renovated to introduce households with warm and inviting residential features, and resident rooms will be upgraded and refreshed to offer private sanctuaries for those who reside within.

Consider joining Barbara and so many others who have supported JGS in this special way with a bequest to JGS. Join our Circle of Honor and be recognized with members on our beautiful wall of recognition and in special events held in your honor.

George Groom of Agawam has experienced the care provided across the JGS Lifecare campus in two ways: both as a short-term resident and as the spouse of a long-term resident.

About Gina, his wife of 57 years, who has lived at the Leavitt Family Jewish Home on the JGS Lifecare campus for over four years, he said, “She gets excellent care 24/7, which I couldn’t do at home. All the CNAs, the nurses, the staff and Life Enrichment, they go out of their way to make sure everyone’s comfortable and has an activity to do. They keep them busy.”

Special Treats

He said Gina, who is suffering from dementia, enjoys ice cream, a craving she indulges nearly every day.

“She loves her ice cream sundaes. They have a great coffee shop here and we go just about every day and she gets a big sundae. That’s how

I stay on her good side,” laughed Groom. “She loves it.”

Groom said his wife enjoys many of the activities at JGS Lifecare, including bowling, baking, and a type of volleyball they play with a large, inflated beach ball. “She loves whapping that thing around,” he said.

Caregiver Becomes the Patient

Groom also experienced the care at JGS Lifecare for himself when he spent three weeks at the Sosin Center for Rehabilitation after knee replacement surgery.

“They took great care of me,” he said. “I actually wanted to stay; I didn’t want to go home. My home is not this good,” he laughed. “You get

up to a great breakfast, you have a great lunch, it’s all home-cooked. Whatever your rehab is, they get you back on your feet.”

Groom is grateful for the care his wife receives. “The care is above reproach. I feel 100 percent confident that she’s getting great care every day. She’s healthy—very healthy. If it wasn’t for them, I don’t think she’d be here right now.”

Watch this! George Groom shares more about his wife Gina and what makes the care at JGS Lifecare so special in a video on JGSLifecare.org/fullstory.

Are you passionate about working with the elderly? By giving of your time and talents at JGS Lifecare, you’ll know firsthand how we touch the lives every day of those we serve. As an organization, we constantly seek individuals and groups to provide friendship and enjoyment to our residents, as well as ways to add meaningful programs and services that ease the challenges of aging.

There are many rewarding volunteer opportunities available at JGS Lifecare, from helping with the activities of daily life to supporting our residents’ spiritual life.

In March, the staff at JGS Lifecare had the honor of celebrating our volunteers as part of the Ann and Jeremy Pava Volunteer Recognition Program.

With over 70 volunteers in attendance, we recounted the numerous ways volunteers positively impact our residents’ daily lives. Delivering mail, hosting trivia, calling bingo numbers, running the coffee shop and gift shop, and being a caring friend to our seniors are just a few of the many ways to volunteer at JGS Lifecare.

Board Chair Susan Goldsmith thanked everyone for giving their time to enrich our residents’ lives. We held a special presentation honoring Nate Sokol, a member of our Life Skills group who was honored for his service.

Christina Tuohey, director of development, said, “I can easily say the strength of this organization is built by the care, compassion, experience and even humor that each one of you bring. Thank you for taking the time to stand by our residents and staff to make JGS the best it can be.”

Congratulations to the 2018 Molly Neigher Award Winners

Ronah Baillargeon, Receptionist, Leavitt Family Jewish Home

“Ronah excels in customer service. She is always positive and helpful in connecting families with their loved ones and their responsible care

providers. She is so welcoming when you come into the building. She always greets you with a big smile and has the most positive attitude. She makes a great first impression to families and visitors to the Home. She is an excellent resource for information.”—Quote from Nomination

Diahann Wimmer, RN, Spectrum Home Health & Hospice Care

“Diahann is the most caring compassionate nurse. While my Mom was on hospice, Diahann went above and beyond. She checked in with me every

morning to see how the night went. She called even if she was not the one who was going to see her that day. She often called at night and on weekends even though she was not on call. Diahann always made herself available to me to talk to, discuss a situation or come up with a new plan of care.”—Quote from Nomination

Her passion is finding a cure for breast cancer and she serves on the Rays of Hope Steering Committee as the Volunteer Food Co-Chair.

“Cheryl is a joy to work with,” said Christina Tuohey, director of development. “She brightens our residents’ days and really takes the time to know each one individually, which allows for a personal experience.”

At the JGS Lifecare annual meeting in May, Susan Goldsmith, chair of the board, welcomed new board members Christopher Carr II, Steven Dane and Meyer Weiss, all of Longmeadow, and saluted retiring board member Harvey Schrage of East Longmeadow for his service.

The focus of this year’s annual meeting was a celebration of the donors who made possible the completion of Phase I of Project Transformation, aimed at de-institutionalizing the delivery of health care to elders through adoption of the small-house model of care. New walls of recognition honoring donors to the campaign were unveiled at the meeting.

Project Transformation Donor Recognition

Phase I of the campaign culminated with the opening in December 2016 of the Sosin Center for Rehabilitation on the JGS Lifecare campus of care, the only Green House model in the area. Also completed during Phase I were renovations and upgrades to Ruth’s House Assisted Living Residence and the opening of Michael’s Café.

Phase II of Project Transformation was kicked off with a $1 million bequest from Paul Cohen, who was recognized for his leadership at the annual meeting with a special presentation. In recognition of Paul’s generosity, JGS Lifecare dedicated The Paul Cohen House at Sosin Center for Rehabilitation.

Stephen Krevalin, co-chair of the Project Transformation Campaign, said, “Paul Cohen’s philanthropy extends to our entire community and he sees the need to support all of our institutions. JGS is blessed that Paul recognizes how important this institution is to our community in providing services to our elderly and infirm.”

Phase II of the Project Transformation Campaign will bring the small-house model of care to the Leavitt Family Jewish Home.

Thank You Volunteers

Goldsmith also recognized the 134 volunteers who provide over 9,000 hours of volunteer time annually in support of JGS Lifecare.

“These volunteers help us fulfill our mission of improving the physical, spiritual and emotional health of the individuals and their families, guided by Jewish values,” she said. “Each volunteer has his or her unique story of why and how they give of their time.”

Goldsmith shared the stories of two such volunteers, Barbara Henriques of Chicopee and Joe Dumbrowski of East Longmeadow, both of whom came

to volunteer because of the care their mothers received at JGS Lifecare.

“They saw what set JGS apart from other communities and have wanted to be part of that mission, even after the passing of their dear ones,” said Goldsmith.

The evening concluded as Goldmith noted, “I am so very proud of our leadership, management, staff, volunteers and supporters for their dedication and hard work in overcoming the challenges we face and in keeping JGS on course to continue its long history of providing the highest quality of care for our community’s elders.”

This past September, experts from across the care spectrum participated in a panel discussion offering information and resources to help families recognize and cope when a loved one has dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Topics addressed included information about screening, diagnosis, treatment, legal and financial considerations, living and care options, and community resources for support.

This free informative session was a part of the JGS LifeEd Community Education Program and the Dementia Friendly Longmeadow initiative, a series of educational sessions offered to the community to make Longmeadow sensitive to the special needs of this growing population. JGS has teamed up with the Alzheimer’s Association Springfield Chapter, The Longmeadow Adult Center, and Glenmeadow to offer training and educational sessions like this to help make Longmeadow a “Dementia-Friendly Community.”

Presenters were Dr. Stuart Anfang a local psychiatrist and member of the JGS Board; Sharon Conner, case manager;

Meghan Lemay, Alzheimer’s Association; Attorney Caroline Murry; David Fedor, independent financial adviser; Rachel Tierney, RN, retired psychiatric nurse; Jim Leyden, executive director of the Longmeadow Adult Center; and Darlene Francis, executive director at Wernick Adult Day Health Care and Ruth’s House Assisted Living Residence.

Sukkot CelebrationAs part of the Anfang Sukkot Celebration at Ruth’s House Assisted Living Residence, residents enjoyed sukkah decorating with 5th grade students from Lubavitcher Yeshiva Academy in September.

As well as tea time in the sukkah, residents participated in religious services on festival days, discussions about the Book of Ecclesiastes, learning about environmental ethics including the film Inconvenient Truth, and enjoyed baking activities.

Life is busy at JGS Lifecare. Across our family of services, residents and clients find comfort in new friends, meaningful social activities, and the caring support of our staff and volunteers.

At JGS we stand by our elders, seeking ways to enrich their lives and provide the highest quality activities, rehabilitation and care. But the expenses for care are staggering! Medicaid and other third-party reimbursement sources do not come close to covering the costs of daily care, not to mention programs that make life fulfilling.

Your Help Is Needed

Please make your gift to the JGS Stand By Me Annual Giving Campaign. We rely on your generous annual gift

to ensure the continued delivery of programs that feed the body, soul and spirit. Your support helps us offset reimbursement losses, ensures the continued delivery of our life enriching programs and services, and helps us provide the highest quality care.

All gifts will be recognized on our website, and gifts of $250 and above will be recognized on our wall of recognition. But the greatest reward will be the satisfaction of knowing that you have made a positive difference in the quality of life of the people we serve.

Return the enclosed giving envelope or contribute online at JGSLifecare.org by clicking on Ways to Give or call the Development Office at 413-567-3949 ext. 1613.

Tribute Card DonationSending a Tribute Card is a distinct way to honor someone who is celebrating or commemorating an important occasion, such as a wedding, anniversary, birthday, bar or bat mitzvah, engagement, new home, or to send get well wishes or condolences while helping frail elders in our community.

Your honoree will receive a card in the mail with your personal message, and as a donor, you will receive an acknowledgement of your contribution.

Pre-Packaged Donation CardsFor your convenient use at any time, you can also purchase a package of six individual cards for $36, with proceeds going to support the JGS Lifecare mission. Use them to commemorate an occasion or just let someone know you care.

To send a tribute card or purchase a six-pack of notecards, please stop by the Development Office; call 413-567-3949 ext. 1613, or purchase online at JGSLifecare.org/ways-to-give/tribute-cards.
