and the comfort of the world. He

apparently has no desire to go back. Luke has lived in both worlds; the

one Demas is deserting, and the one he is deserting it for. He has found a

peace and fulfillment in serving Christ that he never found when he

was serving himself.

Demas deserted the kingdom of God for the world. Luke deserted

the world for the kingdom of God. You can almost hear Luke shouting

as they cross paths, "Don't bother! There's nothing there! You may love

the world, but Demas, it won't love

you back."

On the day of their confirmation, our youth confirmands make a com-

mitment to love the Lord and be faithful to Him – to desert the

world. They’re making a commit-

ment to be like Luke. Are you De-mas, looking longingly at or sort of

drifting toward the world’s pleas-ures? Or are you Luke – looking to

Jesus and living for Him? Which di-rection are you going? If you’ve been

glancing towards what the world of-fers or even started going that way,

you can turn around. The direction you choose to go with your life is

important. The final verdict comes

from Luke's quotation from Jesus in the gospel that he wrote, "What

good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit

his very self?” (Luke 9:25-26)

Pastor David Linkugel

Pastor’s Corner 2 Timothy 4:10-11 is the story

of two deserters going opposite directions. Paul writes his last let-

ter to Timothy from his prison cell and says, "Demas has deserted me,

because he loved this world. Only

Luke is with me."

Demas deserted Paul and the

ministry of the Gospel because he loved this world. The world is the

culture we're in – a good income, good college, good job, good

times, and a good image. Demas saw the pleasures of this world,

and was attracted to them. The ministry was going through tough

times. Paul was in prison for preaching. There must have been a

secret pull for a long time as De-

mas glanced over his shoulder and said, "Boy, it looks exciting over

there. I wonder if I ought to try it sometime?" He finally decided to

live for the world rather than live for Jesus. He is deserter number

one.

Luke is a physician. He's got all

of the world’s goodies: the income, prestige, and comforts – just what

Demas is apparently leaving to

look for. The more Luke experi-

enced the values of Christ's king-dom, the more he's drawn out of the world. By the time Paul writes

this letter, Luke has deserted the world. He left it all behind to fol-

low Jesus and be the personal phy-sician of a missionary named Paul.

The United States is the third largest mission field in the world, and there are lonely and hurting people in every one of our communities. God has giv-en His people words of comfort and hope, and He has prom-ised to use His Word to accom-plish His will when they are shared. Come join with others to learn how God can use you and your congregation to share His Word with each other and with your neighbors. Explore different ideas for building re-lationships with those in your

community and hear what oth-er congregations in Nebraska are doing to show the love of Christ with those in their neighborhoods. Registration is $35 per person, which includes lunch, three breakout sessions, and two keynote sessions by Bruce Wurdeman, Lutheran Hour Ministries executive direc-tor emeritus. Registrations are due May 21. More information and registration forms may be found online at http://www.ndlcms.org/news/conferences/prairie_fire/index.html. Register today! 2014 Elkhorn Days at Lord of Life Save the Date

Sunday, June 8th

11:30 am to 2:30 pm

Fun in the Son returns! The Elkhorn Days committee has

invited us to again host the Sunday events of Elkhorn Days.

This year will feature even more fun – a Bike Rodeo for the

kids, and inflatable obstacle course from Omaha Parks and Rec-

reation/Common Ground – along with the ever-popular pony rides, inflatables, games, and food.

Last year, even in the rain, over 300 attended. We’re preparing for 500 this year. More at-

tendees mean more volunteers will be needed. We have already been blessed by a sponsorship

grant from Thrivent for $1,250!

Our Core Team is in place, and will soon be asking for your service. They would all love for

you to be proactive and volunteer for a committee, rather than waiting for them to come to you.

Our teams and leaders are: Set Up – Jim Bezoni, Food – Jean Netsch and Marvene

Smith, Games – Kris Castle, Logistics – Jon Sundstrom and Clean Up – Nugent family.

Gather – Grow – Go !

In Matthew 28:19-20 Je-

sus tells us, “Go and make

disciples of all nations, bap-

tizing them in the name of

the Father and of the Son

and of the Holy Spirit, and

teaching them to obey every-

thing I have commanded

you.”

The Elkhorn community

continues to grow with many

young families. There is a

need for quality early child-

hood education and care. By

operating an early childhood

education center we can

meet the educational needs of young children,

and we can share the love of Jesus Christ with

them and build relationships with their families.

Our vision is to provide the very best early

childhood education and care that shares the

love of Jesus. We want to meet the needs of fami-

lies in the community by connecting them to

Christ through early childhood education and

before and after school care for elementary chil-

dren. An early childhood center with additional

classrooms will also enable Lord of Life to offer

more Christian education opportunities to disci-

ple all the members of Lord of Life and help

them grow in faith.

These are exciting times for the mission and

ministry here at Lord of Life! We’re stepping for-

ward in faith both spiritually and financially

through a 3-year commitment to give “over and

above” our regular tithes and offerings.

The success of our campaign will depend on

God’s Holy Spirit blessing our congregation with

willing, grateful, and joyful financial support.

Please prayerfully consider how God is calling

you and your family to help our church connect

our growing community to Christ. Commitment

Sunday is May 11th, with a special celebration for

all members and guests following both worships.

Our stewardship goal of $900,000 will be reached

if all families of Lord of Life work together. What

a privilege we have to leave a legacy for genera-

tions to come!
