A.INTRODUCTION:LIFECLIMATEACTION&PLATFORMMEETINGSLIFEClimateActionisasub-programmeoftheLIFEProgrammeforEnvironmentandClimateAction,with a budget of €864million (25% of the total LIFE Programme) for the period 2014-2020. LIFEClimate Action is the only EU programme dedicated to developing innovative responses to thechallengesofclimatechangeacrosstheEU.Itsupportstheimplementationofthestrategicprioritiesof EU climate policy within the Union and is therefore also an important element of the overallmainstreamingof climateactionwithin theEU-budget.Thesub-programme forClimateActionhasthreepriorityareas:
(a)ClimateChangeMitigation;(b)ClimateChangeAdaptation;(c)ClimateGovernanceandInformation
TheLIFEProgrammehassupportedclimateactionevenbeforethelatter’selevationtoadistinctsub-programmefrom2014onwards.LIFE platform meetings aim to promote the exchange of knowledge and good practices, and tofacilitatenetworkingandsynergiesamongLIFEprojectsactive in thesamebroadpolicyarea.SuchmeetingsalsoengageotherrelevantstakeholdersfromtheEuropeaninstitutions,nationalandlocalauthorities,civilsocietyandtheprivatesector.
B.OBJECTIVEANDSTRUCTUREOFTHEPLATFORMMEETINGThisparticularplatformmeetingwillfocusonconcretemeasurestoincreaseresilienceinagricultureand forest management in the Mediterranean region, identified as one of the most vulnerableregions in the world to the impacts of global warming. The structure of the platformmeeting isdescribedimmediatelybelow.
Day1:Tuesday,13March2018
Session1.ClimatechangeimpactsonMediterraneanagricultureandforestry,andrelatedadaptationpolicies
This session will hear presentations on the special climatic conditions prevailing in theMediterranean regionof theEU, the current and foreseen impactsof climate changeon localagriculture and forestry, and the policy framework put in place by the European Union toaddress these impacts and ensure the food andwater security of the population and decentincomesforfarmersandforesters. InadditiontospeakersfromtheEuropeanCommissionandtheEuropeanEnvironmentAgencythissessionwillalsohearfromclosedandongoingLIFEandotherprojectsthatdealwithadaptationpolicyrelatedissuesintheregion.
Session2.Climateservices,knowledgesharingandstakeholderengagementForimplementationofclimateadaptationmeasuresitisnecessarytohaveprecisedatafortheareaconcerned,aswellasthechangingweatherconditionsandclimatictrends.Satellitesand

otherhigh-techinstruments,aswellasmodellingtools,arenowatthedisposaloffarmersandforesters,whomaythoughbeunawareoftheirexistence.Thissessionwillhearpresentationsonreadilyavailableclimateservices,aswellasknowledgesharingtoolsforinformationsharingandgoodpracticetransfer.Alsomethodswillbediscussedforpositivelyengagingallrelevantstakeholders,apreconditionforsuccessofanyeffortinpractice.Speakersvaryfromscientistsandscientificorganisationstoprojectmanagersandcommunicators.Session3A[heldinparallelwithsession3B].ClimatechangeadaptationinMediterraneanagriculture–aviewfromthefieldFollowingthe jointdiscussiononpoliciesandtoolsavailable foradaptation inbothagricultureand forestry in the Mediterranean region, this session will zero in on agriculture, bringingtogether LIFE projects that have been successfully completed and other that are ongoing, toshareexperiencesandgoodpracticeswithrepresentativesoffarmers’associationsandrelatedindustries.
Session3B[heldinparallelwithsession3A].ClimatechangeadaptationinMediterraneanforestry–aviewfromthefield
Followingthe jointdiscussiononpoliciesandtoolsavailable foradaptation inbothagricultureandforestryintheMediterraneanregion,thissessionwillzeroinonforestry,bringingtogetherLIFE projects that have been successfully completed and other that are ongoing, to shareexperiences and good practices with representatives of foresters’ associations and relatedindustries.
Session4.ThematicWorkingGroupsUptofourWorkingGroupswillbeorganised.Thetopicswillbedefinedbasedontheparticipants’preferences indicated upon registration. The Working Groups will give the opportunity toparticipatingLIFEandHorizon2020projectsthatdidnothaveaspeakingslotintheprevioussessionsto present their work and discuss issues of mutual interest with other relevant projects andinterestedparticipants.Day2:Wednesday,14March2018

C.FOLLOWUPONTHEPLATFORMMEETINGThe Platform Meeting, and in particular the panel discussions and working group sessions, areexpected tobring valuable results regarding knowledge sharing, establishing contacts and learningabout newpractices and approaches. However, the time available during ameeting is always tootightastoaddressallpersonsandsubjectsonewishtocommunicatewithandabout.Therefore,theorganisingteamwantstoelaborateanddistributemorebroadlyallimportantresultsgainedduringtheplatformmeeting.Inparticular,itisplanned:

ANNEXI-INFORMATIONONTHEHOSTPROJECT:LIFEAGRIADAPT LIFEAgriAdapt“SustainableadaptationoftypicalEUfarmingsystemstoclimatechange”LIFE “AgriAdapt”project is an international initiative supportedby the LIFE financial instrumentofthe EuropeanCommission and FundaciónBiodiversidad of theMinistry of Agriculture and Fishing,FoodandEnvironmentofSpain. It isdevelopedbyleadingentitiesinthepromotionofsustainablefarming:BodenseeStiftung(Germany),theEstonianUniversityofLifeSciences(Estonia),FundaciónGlobalNature(Spain)andSolagro(France).
Itsobjective istodemonstratehowsustainableadaptationmeasurescanhelp livestock,arableandpermanent crop farms become more climate resilient. The promotion of other positiveenvironmentalbenefitsofthesemeasuresisalsoarelevantaspectoftheinitiative.Toassessvulnerabilitytoclimatechangeofthedifferentagrariansystemstheprojectpartnershavedevelopeda“CommonDecisionTool”intwosteps:1.AfirststepofassessmentofcropsvulnerabilitytoclimatechangeatAgroClimateZoneScale.Thisanalysis provides a framework for the second step of analysis at the farm level. The assessmentcrosses climatic data with crop yields at a regional scale, and allows identifying in a recent pastperiodthestronglyimpactedyears,mainclimateevents,AgroClimaticindicators,etc.2.Asecondstepofassessmentatfarmscale:Oncethefarmischaracterized,thecommondecisiontoolallowsrealizinganassessmentofvulnerabilityofthefarm’scropsandreductionofNearFutureFarmvulnerability.120Pilotfarmswillbeassessedintheproject.Partners are developing actions in close collaboration with farmers, experts, administrations,agriculturalschoolsandprivateentitiesinordertoobtaintransferrableresults.
