Encouraging children topick up a book and read isprobably one of the mostimportant things we can do.

NNiiEE IN AN online survey conducted by News Corp Australia in June this year, 870 peopleresponded providing a snapshot of the reading habits of Australian families.
It revealed one third of parents don’t read or discuss the books their children arestudying at school.

WHETHER it is readingtextbooks, newspapers andmagazines, comics,Facebook updates, emails,text messages, blog posts,tweets, gaming instructions,a recipe, or even devouring abook cover to cover, there isno argument that reading isan important skill. Theability to read is a life-longskill that is essential inmany day to day activities.
The manner in which weread may have changed overtime with most reading
happening online rather thanin print but it doesn’t changethe fact that the mostimportant thing is the abilityto read.
Reading in general hasbeen shown to beresponsible for thedevelopment of vocabularyand general knowledge aswell as social growth.
Reading allows you to:■ Function – so you can
understand the instructionson things like warning signs
■ Find a job - Many jobs
require reading as a part ofjob performance.
■ Discover new things -Reading books, magazinesand the internet means youlearn more.
■ Develop yourimagination – you can goanywhere in the world oreven out of it
■ Write and speak –expand your vocabulary andunderstanding of wordusage. It is the buildingblock of the written andspoken word.
