My top tips for a calmer, cosier, comfortable bedroom:

LIGHTING IN THE BEDROOMLighting in the bedroom should set themood. Don’t go sterile; you need asoothing, calm ambience in the bedroom.

Use side lamps for task lighting andconsider using a dimmer switch which youcan control from your bedside - always agood mood enhancer, soothing or romantic.

YOUR BED IS YOUR FOCAL POINTMake your bed the focal point; your bed asthe centre stage. Use dramatic colours onyour bed to invite you in, with sumptuousthrows, lots of textured soft fabrics andcolourful cushions to make it a pleasure tolook at and snuggle in.

BEDDINGWhen buying bedding you definitely getwhat you pay for. Crispy sheets are notan option for a good night’s comfort. Softcotton linens, pillows that your head sinkinto and luxurious bed spreads make for aperfect night’s sleep. On these cold winternights nothing beats a good old-fashionedhot water bottle too, as getting into a warmbed is heaven. A fluffy cover is a must.

COLOURUse soothing colours in the bedroom.Mossy green, sand and tan tones all makethe mind revert to nature, thus creatingpeace and tranquillity. Using darker toneson accent walls (chocolate browns,

deep purples and sea blues) can bring adeeper ambience and help to create a calmspace.

GO GREENPlants reduce stress levels, so add somegreenery to your space or alternativelyhave fresh flowers in the room. Nothing isas delicious as the smell and look of freshflowers last thing at night and first thing inthe morning. Eucalyptus and lilies are afavourite of mine.

NO CLUTTERKeep your space clean and clutter free. When your bedroom is organised yourmind will be too and these all make for agood nights sleep.

Your bedroom should be a place whereyour worries drift away. It’s a place to berelaxed and at peace, ready for a new day…

Transform yourbedroom intoyour sanctuary

With all the stresses and worry we have in our lives today, life inthe bedroom is the one place we can forget about our woes. Ourbedroom is a place to unwind, relax and recharge. Through lighting, the use of colour, fabrics, throws, cushions and candles you can comehome to a bedroom you will call your sanctuaryWords Charlie Smith.

“I believe in the adage ‘if you wantsomething done, ask a busy person todo it!’ Both my husband (Nic) and I areworkaholics. If we are awake, we areworking and we both get excited by plottingand planning our next venture.”

On the subject of new ventures, Nadinebegins to tell me about her two newwebsites, www.russellsinteriors.co.uk andwww.challonersinteriors.co.uk

“Recently, my husband and I bought somefactories in Liphook. I have one, where Iwill be doing my design work from and alsoholding stock for my two new websites.Challoners Interiors is more mainstream, with lower prices - great looking productswith great prices. Russells Interiors will befor more specialist products that I havetravelled far and wide to find. Some of themwill be repeated but, sometimes, we willalso just put up one-off pieces that we findfrom around the globe. We have startedquite small, while we learn, but ultimately,

Ask abusy person

Just reading Nadine Gilbert’s CV is enough to make you feel tired: Interiorstyling for high profile clients,a glamping business, work abroad…oh and didI mention the 350km cycle ride from Agra to Jaipur she did in her sparetime? So of course my first question has to be, how do you fit it all in?

Interior insightWhat are interior trends do you predictfor the New Year?I do think people are learning to be moreeclectic in their homes. Rather thanfollowing the ‘hotel bedroom’ look, whereeverything matches, I think they will bechoosing individual pieces because theylove them - putting it all together, and seewhat look evolves...a lot less contrived.

By doing this, there will be no distinctive‘looks’ or styles - each person will havetheir own style.

I do not believe that tasteless exists -everyone should be encouraged to find hisor her own style - and be confident about it.

Colour will also, finally, overpowerthe Farrow and Ball greige look...evencoloured carpets will become the normagain - It’s been “Fifty Shades of Beige” fortoo long.

If you could decorate anyone’s homewhose would it be?Oh, Robbie Williams for sure. I think hewould be fun to work for and would be upfor a bit of glamour and outrage - and nottake it all too seriously. Much of the time, people become too focussed on thingsand worry too much about the impact ofwhat they are doing. Homes should befluid, living things and decorating yourhome should be a relaxed, happy affair, not a stressful one.

What is your favourite room at homeand why?Our bathroom...I designed it to look like anightclub for my two (then) teenage boys.It has a black glass shower, a whirlpoolbath (with TV) that is raised to look outover the fields, changeable mood lightingand shag pile carpet. It is totally whacky -but great fun and feels lovely to be in.

we have great plans for huge expansion, with many different lines coming on in thefuture.”

When Nadine talks about her vision for thenew sites, it is clear to see her passion fordeveloping new and exciting interiors.

“I want the site to be a source ofinspiration and we are even going tohave a Creative Village, to promote all thewonderful artisans and craftsmen that wemeet along the way. There is some extra-ordinary talent out there that many don’tknow how to find, so we want to make surethey all get a showcase.”

This passion for interiors dates back toNadine’s twenties when she lived in London.

“I worked for top designer, Peter Inston inRegent’s Park. I ran his library, which wasgreat, as I learnt about many suppliers and

made many contacts but I never got directlyinvolved with the design side. So, it was onlyat the age of 36 when I opened a furnitureshop and, through offering advice tocustomers, I realised I had a natural ability. Ialso learnt that it is not always about being agreat designer...it is more often about beingorganised and reading your client.”

It was also this passion and love of designthat inspired Nadine to come out of whatwas meant to be her retirement three yearsago when she closed down St Russells onHaslemere High Street.

“I had a great client who I had done ahouse for in Midhurst ask me if I couldrecommend another designer for him forhis new house in Fulham and I just couldn’tresist.”

So as we enter 2013 and Nadine embarkson her next exciting interior adventurewith www.russellsinteriors.co.uk and www.challonersinteriors.co.uk it is only fittingthat her New Year’s resolution is “To keephealthy enough to keep going...”

The first personal trainer put to the test wasClaire from the Matt Roberts – “Trainingwith You” programme. Created with famouspersonal trainer, Matt Roberts, this newregime offers an alternative approach togetting fit and losing weight, through asix-week course of no gym memberships,no fad diets and no “in-fashion” trainingstyles. Designed to be completed by groupsof two to eight people, the course promisesto change your lifestyle through revisedfitness and eating behaviour forever. Theprogramme began with an initial fitnessconsultation where Claire gave us all afitness and movement assessment inthe comfort of our office. This involved

evaluating our general health and currentdiet before completing a few introductionexercises. Each member of the team werethen asked their goals for the programmeand given a structured nutritional dietto follow, designed to improve trainingand optimise fat loss. Every week Clairethen offered a different training routine todevelop our fitness and help us reach ourindividual goals. This unique programmeprovided a great combination of individualpersonal training attention along with thecamaraderie and motivation that comeswith working with a group.

Uniq PhysiqueThe second stop on our journey to fitnesswas at Uniq Physique. Established in2008 by Ollie Beard as Muscleinc, beforejoining forces with Rachael in April 2012 tocreate Uniq Physique, this boutique stylegym promises it’s members individualinstruction and coaching to ensure thateach person achieves his or her personalfitness goals. My own visit to Uniq Physiquestarted with a friendly introduction fromboth Rachael and Ollie before Rachael gaveme a quick warm up on the Cross Trainer.

Let’s get personalIt’s that time of year again. The temperature has decreasedbut our waistline is on the increase. Salads have turned intocalorific comfort food and summer evening strolls havebecome cosy nights in front of the telly. In desperate needof some exercise motivation the Life in Haslemere teamhave been testing out Haslemere’s personal trainers in abid to be fit and lean in time for 2013!

healthAfter this Rachael then went through alegs circuit with me where I completed aseries of exercises using the Uniq Physiqueequipment, designed to strengthen my legmuscles. Rachael repeated the circuit threetimes, gradually increasing the weights onthe machines to find out how far she couldpush me. Legs worked, Ollie began work onmy arms. Again this involved completinga circuit using Uniq Physique’s range ofequipment, working my problem areas. Before starting the circuit I mentionedto Ollie that my triceps (bingo wings)had always been a concern so Ollie putparticular focus on this area, showing mespecific exercises I could do to improvethem. After arms Rachael came back towork on my abs. Here I was pleased todiscover that instead of just doing hundredsof boring sit ups there were actually a lotof exercises you can do using equipment. These included the Roman chair for mylower abdominal muscles and the Obliquetwist machine for my side muscles. Finallymy session was rounded off with some padwork with Ollie where I not only got to enjoysome cardio but also got to do lots of de-stressing punching!

Uniq Physique is an incredibly welcominggym providing a happy environment foreveryone to work out from beginners toadvanced fitness professionals.

Frankie FitLast year my fitness levels were put to thetest by personal trainer Frankie Fit. So whenshe found out the Life in Haslemere teamwere looking for some exercise motivationteam this year she was more than happy tooffer some advice.

Here she answered some of our questionson how to improve a common problemarea, the core.“The importance of working our coremuscles is often underestimated. Our coremuscles are made up of inner and outercore muscles. The inner core musclesare often forgotten and are key to ourphysicality whether you’re 20 or 70 yearsof age, whether you enjoy gardening or aresomeone that competes in triathlons.“

How do you engage your core muscles? The abdominal scoop is the act of pullingyour navel in toward your spine. Imaginethat you’re zipping up a tight pair of pantsor bracing for a punch by sucking yourbelly button tight in towards your back.If you place your hands on your stomachwhilst you do this you can feel your musclestighten. You can also try tightening yourbelly button towards your spine even morewhen you breathe out. This will ensurestrong engagement of your core muscles.

What about my posture and breathingwhen I train?Important to note during exercise it is keyNOT to hold your breath, to keep yourshoulders back and down (good posture)and your neck relaxed and loose. If youstart to feel your neck get tense whilst doingthe exercise gently look left to right. If thisdoesn’t work stop for a moment, relax andshrug your shoulders to get mobility in theneck and shoulders. Then try again.

How much should I do?Core exercises can be held for extendedperiods of time and for further reps as theexerciser builds up strength. For examplestart by doing 3 sets of 10 seconds andthen slowly work up to 5 sets of 30 seconds. The exercises are in order of difficulty sostart at the beginning and work your wayup carefully. Once you feel confident andstrong with the first few then move on toincorporate a more demanding exercise.Don’t jump a stage, be patient and buildyourself a good core strength.

Should I warm up before hand andstretch afterwards?Yes, take 5-10 mins before these exercises toget your muscles warm by taking a fast walk,

marching up and down the stairs. Whenyour muscles are warm take time to do a catstretch and prayer stretch before and afteryou run through your exercises.

Frankie Fit’s topcore exercises(1) 4 point scoopOn your hands and knees, with your backflat, keep your arms and neck relaxed andconcentrate on scooping your stomachmuscles around your belly button up towardsyour back as hard as you can.

(2) Half plankLying on the floor with your elbows directlyunderneath your shoulders, keep yours palmsfacing up with your neck, shoulders and armrelaxed. Then prepare to go up by engagingyour core muscles (scooping your abdominalsup to your back), then lift your hips off theground until your body is in a straight linefrom knees, hips to shoulders. To reduceintensity you can break at the hip by stickingyour bottom in the air a little, bringing yourelbows back so they stay under your shouldersbut thereby reducing the weight on yourstomach and back.

(3) BridgeLying on the floor with your knees bent andyour feet shoulder width apart, engage yourcore muscles and clench your bottom thensqueeze your hips up as high as you can.Imagine your body in a straight line from yourhips, knees and shoulders.Your glutes (bottom)should be clenched to keep your hips up andyour stomach engages to support your back.

(4) Core CrunchLying on the floor with your knees bent andyour feet shoulder width apart. Place yourhands on your thighs. Zip your core musclesin towards you and engage your pelvic floor

muscles, keeping them all tight then lift yourshoulders off the ground and reach yourhands up your thighs towards your knees.Youraim for as long as you choose to stay up therein good form is to constantly strive to reach ashigh as you can.

(5) Lean BackSitting on the floor with your knees slightlybent in front of you for comfort, zip up yourcore muscles, set your posture and then leanback until you feel your core muscles workinghard but no discomfort in your lower back. The next step up would be leaning back andthen whilst holding a swiss ball twist side toside and tap the ball on the floor either sideof you. This will switch on your obliques, themuscles that give you your waist.

(6) Full PlankLying on your front with your elbowsunderneath your shoulders, your palms facingup and your arms and neck relaxed, engageyour core and lift yourself into a straight linefrom your toe to your head. If you can’t be sureyou ‘re straight do this infront of a mirror orask a friend to check you. Make sure your backis in neutral spine, so feels and looks straight. If you feel lower back discomfort or you startto lower back try and correct your position, ifyou’re too tired come down and stretch.

Remember to cat stretch and prayer stretchonce you’re finished.

Note: in all these exercises you can engageyour pelvic floor muscles at the same time. These are great for post natal exercisers buthelpful for all ages. These exercises shouldnot create discomfort in your back. If the dostop and consult a Dr, physio or personaltrainer for advice.

Traditionally Champagne has been afavourite for celebrations but in recentyears a number of English sparkling wineshave impressed even the most discerningwine lovers. Richard Royds of HaslemereCellar in West Street, features two excellentexamples from award winning Nyetimberin West Chiltington. You can choose fromthe Classic Cuvee, a classic blend of PinotNoir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnayor the Premier Cuvee Blancs de BlancsChardonnay. The good news is both of their

prices have been reduced by £3 per bottle! Many will finish a special meal with port.

Traditionally port is produced in Portugal, but Lurgashall Winery has an excellentElderberry Port along with Walnut, Sloe orBramble Liqueurs. If you are looking forsomething traditional their Christmas Meadis ideal - This is a Hydromel Mead (no grapeor apple base, just pure fermented honey). The perfect winter warmer, either enjoyedwith friends and a cheese board or as awelcome drink, it is warm and sensuous.

Christmas Mead is fantastic gently warmedon a Wood Burner, Aga or hob, the aromaof cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and honeyepitomises the true taste and smell ofChristmas.

Beer always features highly in my festivecelebrations and we are very fortunate tobe spoilt for choice around Haslemere. Here are some seasonal favourites availabledirect from the breweries or in many of ourlocal pubs:• Wassail was first brewed in the winter of1980 as a one off Christmas winter warmer byFran of Ballards Brewery in Nyewood. Duringthat winter it proved so popular with thelocals that he decided to continue with it allthe time. Now the name is technically a littlesuspect as the drink wassail is a hot mulledcider traditionally drunk as an integral partof wassailing, an ancient southern Englishdrinking ritual intended to ensure a goodcider apple harvest the following year. I amsure Fran would be quick to remind me thatwassail was derived from the Middle Englishwæs hæl, literally ‘good health’ or ‘be youhealthy’. Anyway his winter beer is a strongchestnut ruby Premium ale with an oakyaroma containing sherry and mature fruit. The flavour is warming, fruity and strong. At6.0% it is considered by some to be a BarleyWine, but its characteristics are more thoseof a strong “Winter Warmer” style bitter.• Havant Brewery has produced the winningbeer at the last two annual HaslemereBeer Festivals. Their winter brew is HavantUnwraped, and is simply described byproprietors Mike and Caroline Charlton as“Christmas in a Glass”.• Last but by no means least is LanghamBrewery in Lodsworth. Their ChristmasCracker ABV 4.5% - is a Christmas mysterybeer. It has a different recipe every year witha seasonal twist for extra yuletide cheer!

I hope you enjoy my festive selection.

gardening

Here Pippa Greenwood tells us whatjobs we should be doing in the gardenthis New Year.Do a quick check to see if anything has beenhit by frost or other cold weather injury -blackened foliage, often flopping (or totalplant collapse) are classic signs. If at allpossible, don’t cut back the injured parts, they may look pretty grim but, left in place, they will help to protect the rest of the plant.Only cut back damage if it is seriously soggyor showing signs of fungal growth. Provideweather protection where necessary - fleece(double or treble layers), fleece-coveredtunnels and cloches, piled up dry leaves etcall help!

Enjoy a day out and visit a local garden withlots of winter interest. Make a note of thoseplants that look particularly good duringwinter – perhaps bark colour or texture, or aninteresting or dramatic outline. Then makesure that, where feasible, you plant more ofthem in positions where you can really enjoythem next winter.

This is the perfect time to prune both whiteand red currants. All you need to do now

is use sharp secateurs to cut about an inch(2.5cm) off the stems. Take the opportunityto rake up fallen leaves from around theplants as these may harbour diseases.

The bright orange raised spots of coral spotare particularly prominent on bare winterbranches of many woody shrubs and trees.Figs, maples (Acer spp) and magnolias areespecially prone. Prune infected areas out, back to perfectly healthy wood and bin orburn the prunings. Although often thoughtof as harmless this fungus can cause dieback.

Adequate air circulation is essential in thegreenhouse at this time of year. Whereverpossible open vents and windows, but try toavoid chilling any plants with cold draughts. If necessary consider buying a small electricfan heater to keep the air warm and moving.Shut down vents and windows, and closedoors as soon as temperatures drop.

Don’t forget that it is not just plantsthat may need winter protection- ensurethat outside pipe work and taps are wellinsulated to prevent freezing...or switchoff at the mains to be extra safe. Bubble-wrap polythene, or strips of old blankets orcurtains wrapped around, swaddling-style,

all help!Fruit trees such as apples and pears will

benefit from regular pruning and winterworks well for most. So, if unsure about whatto do, grab a book with all the instructionsyou need, then arm yourself with sharpsecateurs and get to work. If you find anydead or obviously diseased stems, prunethese out and bin or burn them. Check thatthe trunks of youngish plants are protectedagainst rabbits - spiral tree guards areinexpensive and effective if you have not gotthe time to install a more elaborate defense!

Have a great 2013 and make sure you spendas much time as possible in the garden!Make 2013 the year you get great resultswith Veg growing - Visit my website www.pippagreenwood.com and sign up for ‘GrowYour Own with Pippa Greenwood’, either foryourself or for a friend - you choose whatyou’d like to grow from our great selectionof garden ready plants, we send them outat the right time for planting, combinedwith my weekly emails making it easy tosucceed...and fun!

There’s plenty to distract you from your garden at this time of year. But whether you arestill up to your elbows in tinsel and turkey or feeling the effects of too much indulgence, don’t forget YOUR GARDEN NEEDS YOU!!!

haslemere chamber

2012 has been a tough year for businesseseverywhere, but retail businesses inparticular have suffered the worsteconomic conditions in living memory. In January of this year, Surrey CountyCouncil proposed to introduce Pay &Display meters on streets where it hadpreviously been free to park amongst a setof parking controls, which threatened tocause huge problems for residents as wellas shoppers.

The issue united the majority of the

town! Haslemere Chamber of TradePresident, Julianne Evans, joined forceswith local residents, the HaslemereSociety and the Town Council to fightthe proposals, raising a petition whicheventually got over 5,000 signatures, aswell as meeting with Haslemere’s Surreycouncillor to put the case against suchextreme measures.

This massive effort culminated in MrsEvans having the opportunity to speakabout the petition in front of a packed hall

at the Local Committee meeting, wherethe measures were to be discussed. Theproposals for Pay & Display were droppedand further consultation took place. However, the fight goes on, because SurreyCounty Council have not kept to theirword regarding yellow lines and ResidentsOnly Permits.

Meanwhile, Waverley Borough Councilhave hiked the prices in the town centrecar park and extended the charging hours, seriously affecting the activities of the

town’s two iconic charities – HaslemereHall and Haslemere Museum. Onceagain, the Chamber swung into actionon their behalf and raised a petitionthat allowed Mrs Evans to speak at theWaverley Executive meeting. As a result,a review of the car parking charges willtake place in a year’s time.

Not content with this, Waverley arenow making moves to resurface the‘Fairground’ car park in Wey Hill and startcharging. Objectors are horrified thatWaverley Borough Council and SurreyCounty Council have not adequatelyconsidered the issue of displacementand do not seem to be working for theinterests of the town, seemingly onlyfocused on the money.

To add insult to injury, gas mainsreplacement works closed Lower Streetfor four months and Shepherds Hill fora month, effectively blocking access forall the shoppers who usually come infrom the Midhurst direction. During thefirst week, footfall dropped by 15% ormore for all the shops in the town andremained low for at least the first month.Once again, the Chamber were involvedin discussions with SCC and SGN to tryto mitigate the impact of these works asmuch as possible by implementing localsignage, lobbying Waverley for help andbeing in regular contact with the worksmanager. Unfortunately, the impact ofthese works is ongoing, as some peopleare still unaware that the road is no longerclosed.

“If we thought things couldn’t get anyworse. We were wrong.” Said JulianneEvans. “With six weeks to go beforeChristmas, Haslemere traders were up inarms following a shock ban on parkingoutside a string of shops in busy WestStreet. There was no prior warning whenGuildford Borough Council (acting ona request from Surrey County Council)sealed off ALL the bays outside the shops

closest to the High Street. The parking ban, which wasimposed with immediateeffect, was to extend untilFebruary 1st 2013. This wasyet more distress for localbusinesses banking on thebusy period leading up toChristmas making up for thelosses suffered during the yearwith the parking and gasworksheadache”

Apparently the suspensionwas necessitated by thetemporary traffic orderallowing for the erection of scaffoldingand hoarding due to the redevelopmentin Lower Street thus imposes a one-way system on part of Lower Street andimpacting on West Street, threateningto cause traffic diversions for five weeks.Haslemere Town Council were also left inthe dark about the parking bay closures.

“The lack of notice about the parkingbay bans was yet another example

of the complete and utter lack of

communication and consultation by

Surrey County Council – why on earth

not make West Street one-way as well as

Lower Street so that people can still park

there?” Said Julianne.” It really seemed

as though Surrey CC was doing all it

could to stop people coming to shop in

Haslemere!”

Surrey Care Awards’ Managerof the Year

As an entrepreneurial nurse, MarilynHoare bought Huntington House as aderelict building in 1977. After nearlya year of renovations she opened it asa nursing home, gaining an unrivalledreputation in the local community for herpassionate approach to care of the elderly.

However, after a bout of cancer, she hadto stop nursing. She now invests her timein all other aspects of the nursing home.

Her most recent venture is our flock ofrare-breed sheep. After shearing themover the summer, Marilyn sent the woolto be spun into yarn. This homegrown

wool is now being used by our knittingcircle to create colourful clothes andblankets. These woolly garments willthen be donated to a hospital in CapeTown where they will be given to povertystricken mothers and their newbornbabies.

”Inevitably our knitting circle is growingin popularity and is now open to non-residents. We have recently welcomedtwo ladies from the Haslemere Women’sInstitute,” Marilyn explains.

Restored in the workshop of RichardPeskett, local specialist restorer of veterancars and Friends Secretary of the VillageArchive, who explained that the tree andrailings situated at the apex of HeadleyRoad and Whitmore Vale Road in front ofSt. Luke’s church were originally fundedby the Grayshott Mothers Union astheir contribution to the Silver Jubileecelebrations in 1935.The railings were madeby a Mr.Venning (a fine example of wroughtiron craftsmanship) and the tree planted bythe Grayshott Girl Guides.

The Yew tree in the churchyard wasplanted (along with a similar tree on theLyndon Green, now known as the ‘GrannyRobinson’s’ tree) for the 1911 Coronationwith a suitable plaque commemorating theevent carried out by children from Grayshottschool.
