What is mercantilism?

Economic theory that says a nation must increase trade to become more powerful.

A country has the right to use its colonies to get rich.

Mercantilism

Britain saw the colonies as just a way to make money. It used this theory to control all trade with the 13 colonies to its benefit.

To make as much money as possible, England passed a series of laws called the Navigation Acts.

What were the Navigation Acts?

Laws designed to make sure Britain profited as much as possible from trade.

Colonists had to use British ships to transport goods.

Some products, such as sugar and tobacco, could not be sold to other countries.

Some colonists disobeyed the law by smuggling goods.
