N ew York Times Bestseller for over a year, 2 million copies, translated from Japanese…Really?

Why in the world has a palm-sized unassuming book with a title containing only one capital

letter, “the life-changing magic of tidying up, the Japanese art of decluttering and organiz-

ing,” written by a Japanese cleaning consultant achieved such status among the readers of the world?

Author Marie Kondo (who looks 16) claims all she is capable of doing is

tidying and in 200 pages delivers expert advice, strategies, and techniques

covering everything you ever needed to know about getting rid of stuff

from discarding selection criterion to arranging clothes to storing bags in-

side of bags and more. All well and good. Undoubtedly information on

decluttering our closets, drawers, and rooms and encouragement to do so is

appropriate for many of us, but not a compelling reason to make this clean-

ing out guide a best seller.

What is compelling is the life wisdom so easily and neatly scattered through-

out her instructions for tidying. A few examples in her words…

*Before you start, visualize your destination

The thought of cleaning out, packing and moving from one established home

to a new location is often overwhelming and is sometimes a roadblock for

someone who would actually enjoy what life in a new location has to offer. In

the world of traditional real estate you are on your own to make the move hap-

pen and to figure out everything in your new home.

Not so in the world of retirement living and certainly not so for those who want

to move to any of the homes or apartments at Homewood at Frederick. The

marketing team offers an ongoing series of Discovery Seminars on moving and

provides access to moving professionals – real estate agents, movers, packers, downsizers, auc-

tioneers, and interior decorators. Each of these professionals attends, provides information and tips, Continued on page 3

becomes too hard. At-

tachment to the past and

fear for the future get in

the way of finding the

decluttering joy that Ma-

rie Kondo describes.

Kondo suggests the

reader be passionate

about putting their

house in order by tidying

closets and creating

space everywhere for life

-changing magic. Good

advice and good reading!

soon discovers the many

layers of life lessons the

book contains deeper

than the sweater stacks

in your closet. In fact,

the whole last section of

the book is entitled,

“The magic of tidying

dramatically transforms

your life.” Kondo be-

lieves the reader found

her book by fate and

that the reader has a

strong desire to “change

their current situation, to

reset their life, to im-

prove their lifestyle, to

gain happiness, and to

shine.”

So often, Homewood’s

marketing directors meet

with potential residents

seeking exactly what

Kondo suggests is possi-

ble with her tidying prin-

ciples. Those same peo-

ple are seeking to reset

their lives in a new com-

munity that offers an

improved lifestyle and

new opportunities for

happiness. Yet, so of-

ten, customers get stuck

because they have not

tidied up, cleaned out

the stuff, or let go of

past life clutter and mak-

ing the decision to move

*Letting go may be even

more important than adding

*There are only 2 reasons for

not letting go – an attach-

ment to the past or a fear for

the future

*The question of what you

want to own is a question of

how you want to live your life

*Being surrounded by things

that spark joy makes you

happy

*Your real life begins after

putting your house in order.

mighty little treasure

she fulfills her desire for

facilitate moving. In-

coming residents are

providing very positive

feedback indicating their

appreciation for the re-

sources and the infor-

mation.

And that’s not all. Each

new resident receives a

handbook especially

written by Homewood

staff that provides tips

on how to access cam-

table of contents. Mar-

incoming residents prior

to the move to finalize

the residents, and helps

residents become famil-

Suzanne Roos, Market-

ing Assistant for the past

two years at Homewood

at Frederick has accept-

ed a promotion to an

Associate Director of

Marketing position

and will be guiding pro-

spective customers and

applicants through the

processes and decision-

making that will enable

them to become resi-

“I have the best Home-

wood job!” Over the

past several years, she

has worked diligently

with new residents as

they prepare to move

and as they settle in to

their new homes espe-

cially on the Willow

Ponds campus.

Suzanne is fascinated by

the special connections

she discovers between

new Homewood resi-

dents and neighbors on

campus. Homewood

residents share rich life

histories often crossing

paths in Boy Scouts, in

schools, in farming and

in work achievements.

She has many wonderful

and fun stories to share

about how each new

new Willow Pond home

but then enthusiastically

embraces the lifestyle

choices right in front of

them.

When it comes to health

and fitness, you could

say that Gretchen Smith

is an expert. And now

she’s bringing her exper-

tise and passion to

Homewood at Frederick

as our new Director of

Wellness.

A native of Walkersville,

exercise has always been

a major part of Gretch-

en’s life, and she partici-

pated in basketball, soft-

ball, track, and field

hockey in school. She

studied corporate fitness

at Shepherd University,

and then taught fitness

classes at Frederick

Community College and

Hood College for over

20 years. Before coming

to Homewood, Gretch-

en was the Fitness Di-

rector at Country Mead-

ows.

She and her husband,

Brian, own a gym, Well

Fit Aerobic and Fitness

Center in Thurmont,

and they also run Cun-

ningham State Falls,

where they oversee the

boat rentals and conces-

sions.

With all of her experi-

ence, Gretchen is excited

to be starting a new

chapter at Homewood.

She was drawn to

Homewood because of

the expansion. The

Lodge will feature a state

-of-the-art fit-

ness center,

which, accord-

ing to Gretch-

en, is every

wellness direc-

tor’s dream.

She’s looking

forward to

starting new

programs at

Homewood – if that’s

what the residents want.

“My goal is to make sure

the residents have what

they want and that they

are aware of all of the

services that wellness

offers,” Gretchen ex-

plained.

She is open to sugges-

tions for new programs

and is looking forward

to working with the resi-

dents to help them reach

their fitness goals.

We can tell that she has

great things in store for

Homewood. Since she

started in October, she

already redesigned the

massage room and has

plans for an acupunctur-

ist and a chiropractor to

visit the campus to offer

services to the residents.

We’re excited to wel-

come Gretchen to

Homewood at Freder-

ick!
