IN MEMORIAM

Darrent WilliamsJan. 27, 1982Jan. 1, 2007

On Jan. 1, 2007, Oklahoma State lost a member of its football family when former Cowboy defensive back Darrent Williams died in Denver, Colorado, just hours after the Denver Broncos had concluded their season. The Fort Worth native was an all-Big 12 player for the Cowboys and an electrifying return man. He had been a member of the Denver Broncos since leaving OSU.

2006 NCAA Wrestling Champions | Two Individual ChampionsOSU has accumulated 34 national titles in wrestling and the team’s victory in 2006 marked the program’s fourth consecutive win.

Welcome to Oklahoma State Athletics. It is a place where Olympic gold medalists and NCAA champions pass each other in the halls. It is the home of perhaps the best basketball facility in the country and the future home of one of the nation’s top football complexes.

It is the home of the Heisman Trophy, the NCAA baseball player of the century, and several of the greatest wrestlers in history. It is the home of one of college basketball’s fi rst great big men, not to mention the home of one of the founding fathers of the sport. Its golfers go on to become household names. And its biggest booster is already a household name.

It is the home of 48 national team championships – a total better than all but three schools in America.

This is Oklahoma State Athletics.

FOLIFE AS A COWBOY

OSU’s athletic department has long been known as one of the most tradition-rich in the country – not just in one or two sports, but across the board. In fact, during the 2006-2007 academic year, Oklahoma State’s athletic squads reached the top 10 in 10 different sports. And that total does not include an NCAA Tournament appearance by women’s basketball or the Independence Bowl win by the football squad.

In the annual Director’s Cup standings, which grades overall athletic performance by NCAA members, OSU has fi nished among the top 30 programs six times since the award’s inception in 1994.

Individually, more than 140 OSU student-athletes have won national titles, including Cowboy wrestlers Johny Hendricks and Jake Rosholt, and men’s golfer Jonathan Moore during the spring of 2006.

While competing in the Big Eight Conference, the Cowboys and Cowgirls won 135 team titles and crowned 500 individual conference champions.

Most recently, the wrestling team claimed OSU’s 47th NCAA title in the spring of 2006, followed quickly by championship No. 48 when men’s golf brought home it’s 10th national championship just a couple of months later. For the grapplers, the title was their fourth in a row, and men’s golf claimed the NCAA’s top prize for the third time in 12 years.

The Cowboy wrestling team is among the most storied programs in all of college athletics. OSU’s 34 team titles are the most collected by any school in one sport. The Cowboys have also produced 132 individual national champions, including the sport’s fi rst-ever four-time champion, Pat Smith.

Priding itself on producing talented running backs, greats such as Bob Fenimore, Ernest Anderson, Terry Miller, Thurman Thomas and 1988 Heisman Trophy winner Barry Sanders have roamed the offensive backfi eld at “Tailback U”.

The Cowboy baseball program is one of the most successful in the country. OSU has made the trek to Omaha, Neb., for the College World Series 19 times, fourth most in NCAA history, and won the national title in 1959.

The program has also produced two of the game’s best collegiate players, Pete Incaviglia and Robin Ventura. One of the game’s most revered power hitters, Incaviglia rewrote the NCAA record books en route to being named the “Player of the Century” by Baseball America. After amassing a 58-game hitting streak, Ventura earned “Player of the Decade” honors and fi nished third in the player of the century voting.

Under former head softball coach Sandy Fischer, who produced the fourth-highest win total in Division I history, OSU made six appearances in the Women’s College World Series.

Legendary basketball coach Henry Iba assembled one of the nation’s fi rst men’s basketball powerhouses at OSU, then Oklahoma A&M, in the 1940s. His 1945 and 1946 teams were the fi rst in NCAA history to win back-to-back national championships. They were led by Bob “Foothills” Kurland, who helped usher in the goaltending rule.

The Cowboys returned to the national scene under one of Mr. Iba’s former pupils, Hall of Fame nominee Eddie Sutton, who led the Cowboys to the 1995 and 2004 Final Fours.

The Cowgirl basketball squad has had its share of postseason action as well.

The program has played in eight NCAA tournaments, including 2007, and made a Sweet 16 appearance in 1993.

One of golf’s fi nest venues, Karsten Creek, serves as the backdrop for two of college golf’s premier programs. Opened in 1994, the Tom Fazio layout was named Golf Digest’s “Best New Public Course”. In 1998, the course was one of only 10 in the nation to be awarded a fi ve-star rating. The course served as the host site for the men’s NCAA Championship in 2003

The men’s squad has qualifi ed for the NCAA Championships in each of its 61 seasons, a feat unmatched by any other program in the country, while winning a stunning 50 conference championships. OSU has claimed 10 national titles, including eight by former head coach turned OSU athletic director Mike Holder.

The Cowgirl golfers have made 16 NCAA appearances and won 15 conference titles, not to mention the 2007 NCAA regional.

Since 1983, the cross country and track and fi eld programs have had more than 50 All-Americans, four NCAA champions, one world-record holder and one Olympian emerge from the program.

The men’s cross country team has also contributed to the legion of national titles with its victory at the 1954 national meet.

The women’s program has produced numerous All-Americans and conference champions, led by 1988 Olympian Christine McMiken’s nine conference championships and eight All-America honors.

Both the men and women’s cross country teams fi nished in the top 10 in 2005.

The OSU tennis teams have consistently been front-runners in conference and national competition.

On the men’s side, the Cowboys have 12 league titles and more than 120 individual conference champions to their credit. Included in that group is three-time national champion Pavel Kudrnac. The Cowboys hosted an NCAA regional in 2006 and 2007 and advanced to the Sweet 16 last spring.

Beginning with the 1980 season, the women’s team put together an impressive string of 11 consecutive conference crowns and has fi nished among the top 10 nationally on a regular basis.

A pair of sports, women’s soccer and equestrian, have been added in recent years to boost the number of varsity sports at Oklahoma State to 18, and both have attained success. Soccer has raised Big 12 championship banners and reached the top 10 in 2006, while equestrian ranks with America’s best.

In 2001, the most unique athletic complex in the country was unveiled. The Athletic Center, which houses the renovated Gallagher-Iba Arena, is a state-of-the-art facility. Capacity was more than doubled, rising from 6,381 to 13,611, and included skyboxes that can be utilized for both football and basketball. Gallagher-Iba Arena is recognized by many as America’s best college basketball facility.

Boone Pickens Stadium changes almost hourly as the home of the Cowboys continues to evolve into one of America’s top facilities.

And across the street from the stadium, work is underway on the Athletic Village and indoor practice facility.

OSU GOLF IN 2006 – NCAA CHAMPIONSJonathan Moore led the OSU team at the NCAA Championships as Medalist and was named a First-Team All-American and 2006 Phil Mickelson Award Winner.

With a focus on individualized attention, OSU’s student-athletes continue to raise the bar in the classroom. OSU is one of the few academic programs in America that does not utilize a study hall for its student-athletes. Instead, the academic course and progress is charted on an individual basis with stunning results.

S T U D E N T- AT H L E T E L I F E S T Y L EThe day-to-day living for student-athletes at Oklahoma State rivals that of any campus in the country. Most Cowboys are housed on campus in spacious apartments that include living areas, private bedrooms, a full kitchen, washer and dryer, free local phone, free cable television and free internet access.

The apartments are located on north Monroe, a short walk from the Athletics Center as well as the academic center of the OSU campus.

OSU student-athletes also enjoy one of America’s top training tables. With a chef dedicated to the football menu and with the training table located inside Boone Pickens Stadium, Cowboys and Cowgirls have the best of both worlds – great food in a convenient location.

Beginning in August 2007, OSU will become one of the fi rst schools in the country to provide oversized beds for its athletes. Each apartment will be furnished with a custom athletic bedding system. The beds are 95 inches in length and over 54 inches in width, meaning even the tallest and largest OSU athletes will be completely supported for a comfortable night’s sleep.

The health care of Oklahoma State’s student-athletes is the top priority of a professional staff that includes physicians, athletic trainers and certifi ed graduate assistants.

New to OSU is Dr. Val Gene Iven. An OSU graduate, who has spent the past 13 years as the team physician for men’s athletics at the University of Tennessee, Dr. Iven will offi ce out of the OSU athletic department and oversee all health care for the athletic department. OSU athletes also have access to a statewide network of specialized physicians.

Dr. Iven, along with Director of Sports Medicine Terry Noonan, helps coordinate a staff of six full-time athletic trainers and seven graduate assistants. OSU also features a certifi ed athletic training program for students. OSU staffers also include active-release certifi cation (massage therapy) and a certifi ed physical therapist.

Currently housed in the athletics center, OSU is planning an 8,000-square-foot athletic training facility as part of the west end zone project. That state-of-the-art project will provide OSU’s student-athletes with cutting edge health care.

LIFE AS A COWBOY

It is a testament to the direction of the Oklahoma State football program that Glass left his position as director of strength and conditioning at the University of Florida to return to his alma mater in Stillwater.

Glass is at the very top of his profession, as documented by his accomplishments at OSU as well as in the Southeastern Conference.

While in Gainesville, he worked with numerous National Football League fi rst-round draft picks, a Heisman Trophy winner, four SEC championship teams and a BCS national champion.

In his fi rst stint at Oklahoma State as a graduate assistant, he tutored OSU Heisman Trophy winner Barry Sanders, along with All-Americans and NFL standouts Thurman Thomas (an NFL Hall of Famer), Jason Gildon and Keith Burns.

He has turned down other lucrative jobs, including the NFL, and is now beginning his third year at Oklahoma State.

“I came back because I knew things were going to be different,” Glass said. “We have things here now that are on par or better than what we had in the SEC.

“I knew Coach Gundy from his days as a player, and I knew Coach (Larry) Fedora and (Joe) Wickline from Florida,” he added. “I knew what they could do.”

THE COWBOY WAY

Oklahoma State football is being re-tooled for speed. In fact, OSU’s speed and strength program is designed to enhance foot speed as well as strength.

“Speed is what set us apart at Florida,” Glass said. “We work to develop speed as well as strength. Of course, it has to be in the genes, and we are recruiting players who can run.”

RESEARCH

Oklahoma State’s speed and strength staff never stops investigating its own methods. Research is at the heart of the OSU conditioning program.

“We do a lot of research,” said Rob Glass. “It is an ever-changing process and the more research we have, the more we can refi ne and defi ne our processes.

“There are a lot of elements we consider: nutrition, fl exibility, advanced rehab and pre-hab.”

THE THREE PRONGS

OSU’s conditioning programs are based on sport, position and individuals.

The football players have a foundation that is common to the squad. Workouts become more specifi c based on the player’s position, and then are completed by workouts designed for an individual’s strengths and weaknesses.

THE FACILITIES

Oklahoma State currently enjoys a tremendous facility advantage with a 25,000-square-foot weight room that is encompassed by a running track.

“It’s a great situation for us,” Rob Glass said. “I like what we have.”

S P E E D ,S T R E N G T H &C O N D I T I O N I N GThe person Mike Gundy describes as the most important to Oklahoma State’s football success is Rob Glass. Glass holds the title of assistant athletic director for speed and strength and oversees OSU’s strength training and speed development efforts on a year-round basis.

Boone Pickens Stadium, renamed from Lewis Field after the historic gift from the OSU alum, offi cially opened a new south side in 2004, a new north side in 2006 and construction is ongoing on a multi-year project that will put OSU’s stadium among the nation’s elite.

Currently on display is the ongoing west end zone project. When completed, Boone Pickens Stadium will feature 60,000 seats in a horseshoe setting with modern-day fan amenities, while maintaining perhaps the closest proximity to game action in all of football.

The west end zone project will also include a new multi-level football operations center. Some of the features of the project will be new football offi ces, meeting rooms, speed and conditioning center, locker rooms, equipment room, athletic medicine center, media facilities, hall of fame area and training table.

The fi nal touches at the top of the stadium will raise OSU’s suite total to more than 100, with the total of club seats remaining at 4,000. Four video boards will be featured along with a ribbon board that will encircle the interior of the stadium.

The wheels were set in motion on the stadium project when OSU alum Boone Pickens made the single-largest gift in school history in 2003. His $70 million gift ($20 million of which was earmarked for stadium expansion) spurred the “Next Level Campaign”, which generated more than $100 million in gifts and pledges and involved more than 2,500 individuals, making it the single-most successful campaign in OSU history.

Pickens capped the fundraising effort in 2005 with his momentous gift of $165 million that will not only benefi t Cowboy football, but will aid with the development of OSU’s planned multi-million dollar athletic village. The gift is the largest ever received by a university athletic department.

It’s not just the stadium that is changing. In 2005, the playing surface was replaced with Football Pro, a surface created by Millennium Sports Technologies that is considered the best and most durable synthetic surface available.

OSU’s practice fi eld has also been completely reshaped and covered with a new natural surface that ranks among the best in college football.

The new surfaces, in addition to renovated locker room and weight training facilities, were made possible through gifts by Pickens and fellow OSU alum Sherman Smith that totaled $3 million. Smith, another generous OSU alum, will have his name on Oklahoma State’s new indoor practice facility (see page 18).

OSU’s football home is now far removed from the original fi eld that opened in 1914. The Cowboys’ fi rst athletic fi eld gained its fi rst permanent seating in 1920 and was repositioned from north-south to east-west to “avoid the prevailing strong winds.”

The stadium was originally named after Laymon Lowery Lewis, the popular dean of veterinary medicine in the early 1900s.

The fi rst addition to the stadium came in 1924 with the steel and concrete portion of the south stadium. During the 1929-30 seasons, 8,000 permanent seats were built on the north side to bring the capacity to 13,000. In 1947, the south stadium was increased from 20 to 53 rows and capacity climbed to over 30,000. The fi rst permanent press box was added in 1948.

Prior to the 1950 season, 10,600 more seats were added to the north stands, increasing capacity to 39,000. The next expansion didn’t come until 1971 when the cinder track around the fi eld was removed. The fi eld was lowered 12 feet and 20 rows of permanent seating were added to both sides.

The fi rst artifi cial surface was installed in 1971 at a cost of $2.5 million, and the coaches’ offi ces (now part of the Athletic Center) were constructed prior to the start of the 1978 season. The stadium’s press box was torn down and reconstructed in 1980 at a cost of $1.8 million and the lighting system was installed prior to the 1985 season.

A second artifi cial surface was installed prior to the 2000 season and remained in place until the summer of 2005.

Due to construction, offi cial capacity at Boone Pickens Stadium is 44,700 for the 2007 season. The all-time largest crowd in stadium history is 51,458 for the OSU-OU game in 1979. More than 51,000 also were on hand for a game against Arkansas the same year.

LIFE AS A COWBOY

It’s not your imagination. The west end zone of Boone Pickens Stadium is growing – daily. And when it is fi nished, the Oklahoma State Cowboys will be housed in state-of-the-art facilities for game days, as well as the other six days of the week.

The west end zone is the future home of all things OSU football. Not only will it serve as headquarters for the Cowboy coaching staff with offi ces at the club level, the west end zone will house a new OSU locker room, speed and strength center, equipment room, hall of fame, athletic training center, theater room, meeting rooms, video operations, media center, and dining area.

The west end zone is so inclusive that Bullet will have his own stall.

The project is scheduled to be completed in time for the 2009 season opener when the Georgia Bulldogs visit Stillwater.

Some of the facts and fi gures on the west end zone project:• The completed horseshoe will raise seating capacity to 60,000

and will put in place more than 100 suites around the rim of the stadium. Boone Pickens Stadium will have four video boards and a ribbon board that will encircle the stadium. The site of the new dining area that will be utilized by OSU’s student-athletes will offer views of the stadium as well as the OSU campus. It will seat at least 300. The team theater room will accommodate as many as 200 and can be utilized for a variety of special events. The facility will include surround sound and can serve in a variety of ways from a movie theater to a classroom.

• A state-of-the-art athletic training facility will be located just steps from the Cowboy locker room and will encompass 8,000 square feet with four pools for hydrotherapy.

• Offi ces for the coaching staff will be housed on the club level of the west end zone and will feature stadium views and

balconies for game-day seating.

• The entire west end zone project will feature 1.1 million square feet, including 700,000 square feet with conditioned space.

• Convenience, Convenience, Convenience. The project will include a 12,000-square-foot locker room that is located just steps away from the speed and strength center, athletic training

center, equipment room and meeting rooms. The locker room will be big enough to host the team as well as offensive, defensive and special teams meetings during halftime. The locker room size will double OSU’s current dressing quarters.

• The players’ custom-designed lockers will include equipment and shoe ventilation, as well as embossed glass name plates that players take with them upon graduation. The football-only speed and strength center will cover 20,000 square feet and will include a sprint track for timings, etc. A mammoth equipment room, covering roughly 14,000 square feet, will be a model of effi ciency and organization for the players as well as coaches and staff. The history of Cowboy football will be prominently displayed on several levels of the west end zone, including a vestibule near the Cowboy locker room, as well as a 5,000 square foot football gallery located near the main entrance of the football operations center.

On Jan. 11, 2007, Oklahoma State University announced that alumnus Sherman Smith was donating $20 million toward Oklahoma State University’s athletic indoor practice facility.

The gift made Sherman Smith the second largest private donor in the history of OSU.

“This gift is a refl ection of how much Oklahoma State University means to Dad,” said Will Smith, son of

Sherman Smith and family spokesman. “He very often shares stories, tales and anecdotes of his time as a student at Oklahoma State. He enjoys watching his Cowboys and Cowgirls and their pursuit of conference and national titles.

“It is a privilege to have the resources to fi nancially assist in the vision of OSU Athletics,” he added. “The energy business has been very good to us, and we feel blessed to make this contribution.”

The new indoor facility will bear Sherman Smith’s name.

“This is a special gift serving Oklahoma State athletics,” said athletic director Mike Holder. “An important part of dramatically improving our athletic facilities, this gift continues the momentum that has been established at OSU. Sherman has been a tremendous difference maker in supporting OSU Athletics for many years. We are extremely grateful to Sherman and his family for this important contribution.”

The new facility will be strategically located across the street from Boone Pickens Stadium in the Athletic Village. Student-athletes, coaches and athletic trainers will have convenient access to Boone Pickens Stadium, Gallagher-Iba Arena, weight training facilities, sports medicine amenities, administrative offi ces, and future additions to the Athletic Village.

The new facility will be located adjacent to OSU’s new football practice fi elds.

While planning for the Athletic Village is still in the early stages and all artists’ renderings are subject to change, the completed projects will include new venues for track, baseball, tennis and soccer.

The village will also house the Sherman Smith Training Center, the new indoor practice facility that will benefi t every student-athlete on the OSU campus.

The future of Oklahoma State University Athletics will not be defi ned by a single facility or venue but by an assortment of new facilities that will form a state-of-the-art complex on the OSU campus.

The Athletic Village, to be located just north of Boone Pickens Stadium, will benefi t every program in the Oklahoma State athletic department while providing OSU with cutting edge venues located in a convenient and comprehensive setting. And unlike most campuses in which facilities are added individually, Oklahoma State is in the enviable position of being able to put together a long-range facility blueprint that will allow the venues to complement each other in an integrated fashion.

While construction continues on the west end zone project, the Athletics Center, located in the east end zone, is the home of Cowboy and Cowgirl Athletics, including the OSU football program.

The unique facility, still in its fi rst decade of service, features modern amenities and yet remains very much an homage to one of college athletics’ most historic venues.

• Built at a cost of approximately $56 million, the Athletics Center was a landmark project for Oklahoma State University, as well as the state of Oklahoma.

• Funding of the project was a total team effort, supported by OSU students through a self-imposed activity fee, private donations, loyal season-ticket holders and a use-tax voted on by the citizens of Stillwater.

• The Athletics Center features an academic counseling center, training facilities for all sports, a new strength and conditioning center, expanded offi ces, a recruiting lounge, an auxiliary gym, new wrestling facilities and the Heritage Hall museum.

• Heritage Hall features more than 5,000 square feet of displays highlighting OSU’s many athletic and scholastic achievements.

• Historic Gallagher-Iba Arena was not demolished — it was encapsulated by a new roof structure and concourse. Once the historic building was enclosed by the new structure, demolition began on the existing roof structure and upper wall. Actually, three buildings — Gallagher-Iba Arena, the football coaches’ building and the strength, training and locker-room center — became one.

• The original structure, called the 4-H Club and Student Activity Building when it was built in 1938, was dubbed the “Madison Square Garden of the Plains.”

• Construction more than doubled the height of Gallagher-Iba Arena from 60 feet to more than 120 feet.

• Seating in Gallagher-Iba Arena was expanded from 6,381 to 13,611, making it the largest on-campus sports arena in the state of Oklahoma.

• The arena’s original white maple wood court remains intact. Installed in 1938, it is undoubtedly the oldest and most heralded court still being used by a major-college team today.

• This grand facility, now bigger and better than ever, remains home to more national championships than any other facility in America.

• Supporting the entire roof structure are two massive box trusses, nearly a football-fi eld long, 40 feet tall and weighing 1 million pounds each.

• One of the nation’s largest collegiate strength and conditioning facilities (30,000 square feet of space including the weight room and oval running track) is housed in the basement level of the Athletics Center.

• Five laps around the concourse equals a mile.

• The Athletics Center’s new sports medicine facility boasts a cutting-edge Hydroworks Therapy Pool with a variable-speed treadmill for student-athletes to rehabilitate injuries safely and effectively by running in water.

• The Athletics Center features the nation’s only skybox suites that allow fans to view basketball or wrestling in the arena from the east side and football games from the west side.

Experience Tulsa’s cosmopolitan fl avor at the same time as you delight in its small-town friendliness. It’s big enough to have everything you need, but small enough to make you feel right at home.

In Tulsa you will fi nd cowboys and classical ballet. Art Deco and Arena football, rodeos, religion, and rolling hills. A visit to Tulsa is a great getaway to experience a delightful mix of rich culture, colorful history, terrifi c shopping, and lively nightlife.

When the sun goes down in Tulsa, you can live it up almost any way you like. Try a night at the opera, or hit trendy eateries in the Brookside and Brady District. Get lucky at bingo or the horse races, yuk it up at a comedy club, cheer on a ball team, ride a roller coaster, feast at a four-star restaurant, or get messy at a barbecue joint. The choices are endless, and whatever you do you’ll have the time of your life.

Tulsa, located an hour from Stillwater, is also the gateway to Green Country, northeastern Oklahoma’s playground of lakes, rivers, forests and fun.

Tulsa is a city that surprises visitors with a feeling that is southern, eastern and western all at once.

Stillwater is a rapidly growing city of 42,000 and is near the geographic center of the U.S. Often called Oklahoma’s premier education community, Stillwater is the home of some of the region’s fi nest education and training institutions, including Oklahoma State University, Meridian Technology Center, Northern Oklahoma College/OSU Gateway, and one of the nation’s top rated public school systems.

With such a strong commitment to education, it’s easy to see why Stillwater’s educational attainment is among the highest in the nation, with 48 percent of its residents holding bachelor’s degrees or higher.

The city is the micropolitan anchor for the state’s technology triangle that includes Oklahoma City and Tulsa, each an hour drive away and connected by a great system of interstate quality highways.

The “college town” atmosphere lends itself to a variety of recreational opportunities. Year-round arts and cultural events appeal to many different audiences and feature music, dance, theater, festivals, lectures, and concerts. A youthful community demands the best in fi tness centers, spas, parks and recreational opportunities.

And for the outdoor enthusiast, nearby lakes provide a quiet respite at the city’s edge, sparkling in 234 days of annual sunshine.

After a day of work or play, residents and visitors often relax in one of the many restaurants or night spots that offer everything from barbecue to fi ne dining, and blues to blue grass. Stillwater’s retail districts feature a unique shopping experience where you’ll fi nd museums, galleries, and shops with personality. OSU athletic events attract more than 600,000 fans to Stillwater annually.

OSU has been called the “University of Golf,” and the fi ve-star Karsten Creek, home of the 10-time national champion Cowboy golf team and perennial top-10 women’s program, ranks with such well-known courses as Pebble Beach. It’s one of several public and private courses that prompted Golf Digest to call the Stillwater area among the “Top 10 Places in America to retire and play golf.”

Stillwater is one of America’s safest cities, with a crime rate far below the U.S. average. Security also comes in the form of great health care services, centered around Stillwater Medical Center’s state of the art facilities. And with a cost of living that averages more than 10 percent below the U.S. average, the dollar buys more.

Whether you’re here for a short time or a lifetime, you’ll want to stake your claim in one of America’s great university cities…Stillwater, Oklahoma!

S T I L LWAT E RThe home of Oklahoma State University is Stillwater. Located in north central Oklahoma, and easy drives from Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Kansas City and Dallas, Stillwater provides college-town atmosphere with big-city access.

As the northernmost school in the South Division, Oklahoma State is the most centrally located campus in the Big 12 Conference. And because of its location, OSU arguably has the league’s easiest road trips for both its teams and fans.

The successes, insights and innovations of OSU graduate T. Boone Pickens are too numerous to mention – as are those who have benefi ted from his successes.

In January of 2005, Mr. Pickens made history with his $165 million gift to Oklahoma State University, earmarked for athletics. That gift set in action a series of events that are easy to see today.

The football stadium, Boone Pickens Stadium, has since been in a constant state of change with the west end zone project being the fi nal step. More than an upgrade, these improvements are more fi ttingly classifi ed as a complete and total stadium renovation.

And his gifts across campus are numerous as well. Students at OSU are educated in the OSU T. Boone Pickens School of Geology.

During the span of his career. T. Boone Pickens has created thousands of jobs and made hundreds of millions of dollars – for others as well as himself – and he isn’t timid about spreading it around. “I like making money. I like giving it away…. not as much as I like making it, but it’s a close second,” he has often said.

The breadth of his philanthropy – nearly half a billion dollars during his career – includes health and medical research, treatment and services; entrepreneurship; kids at risk; education and athletics, with a particular focus on his alma mater, Oklahoma State; corporate health and fi tness; and

conservation and wildlife management. While many donations involve millions of dollars and attract headlines, there are hundreds more ranging from hundreds of thousands to several hundred. Each is important in its own way.

In 2006, his charitable activities, which included $175 million and the establishment of the T. Boone Pickens Foundation, ensured his continued ranking as one of the Chronicle of Philanthropy’s top U.S. philanthropists for the second straight year. His $220 million of giving in 2005 earned Pickens the fi fth spot on the Chronicle’s list. The Pickens Foundation is focused on improving lives through grants supporting educational programs, medical research, athletics and corporate wellness, the entrepreneurial process and conservation and wildlife initiatives.

Pickens is a record-setting philanthropist who has graced the cover of virtually every business publication in America. His gift to OSU in 2005 was the single largest for athletics in NCAA history, and the $7 million donation to the American Red Cross that same year is the largest individual contribution in the 150-year history of that organization.

“I fi rmly believe one of the reasons I was put on this Earth was to make money and be generous with it,” Pickens says. “And that’s what I’ve continually tried to do.”

“Boone’s once revolutionary ideas [are] so completely taken for granted that they have become linchpins of the economy.”

A BUDDING BOWL TRADITIONThe Oklahoma State football program will enter 2007 looking to earn its fi fth bowl appearance in the past six seasons. In fact, OSU’s bowl history is already among the best in the country. The numbers tell the story… Among the NCAA’s all-time leaders in bowl appearances (the nation’s top 50 postseason football programs), only Penn State (66.7 percent) and Boston College (66.7 percent) have a better bowl winning percentage than Oklahoma State (64.7 percent). The Cowboys ended the 2006 season with a victory over Alabama in the PetroSun Independence Bowl. The win was one of three in the postseason by the Big 12 Conference. OSU ranks among the top 30 programs in the country with 11 bowl victories.

THE TRAVEL FACTOROklahoma State is known for the Orange Army of fans who descend upon bowl sites when the Cowboys are in town. The neutral site bowl stadiums take on the look of Boone Pickens Stadium and Gallagher-Iba Arena when the Oklahoma State Cowboys are in town.

Because of the large traveling fan base, OSU is a favorite among bowl selection committees. As a result, OSU has made bowl appearances on both the east and west coasts.

HISTORY

Oklahoma State’s football trophy case includes championship trophies from some of the nation’s most prestigious bowl games, including the Cotton Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Holiday Bowl, Gator Bowl, Sun Bowl, and Sugar Bowl. Along the way, the Cowboys earned victories over the likes of Alabama, Brigham Young, Florida State and West Virginia.

Excluding the 1960s when OSU was a newcomer to the Big Eight Conference, the Cowboys have made multiple bowl appearances in every decade since the 1940s.

Head Coach Mike Gundy has been involved in two bowl games as an OSU player, three as an assistant coach and one in just two years as a head coach.

1. You become a prospective student-athlete if you have started classes for the ninth grade or if the college provides you (or your relatives or friends) any fi nancial aid or other benefi ts that the college does not provide to students generally.

2. You become a recruited prospective student-athlete at a particular college if any coach or athletic staff member solicits you or your family for the purpose of securing your enrollment and participation in intercollegiate athletics. Activities by coaches or staff members that cause you to become a recruited prospective student-athlete are: (1) providing you with an offi cial visit; (2) arranging an in-person, off-campus contact with you or your parent(s) or legal guardian(s); (3) initiating or arranging a telephone contact with you, your family, or guardian for the purpose of recruitment on more than one occasion; or (4) issuing you a National Letter of Intent or a written offer of athletically related fi nancial aid. NOTE: At the Division I or II level, a representative of athletics interests (booster) may not solicit your enrollment in any manner (e.g., no phone calls, letters, or in-person contacts).

3. You (or your family) may not receive any benefi t, inducement or arrangement such as cash, clothing, cars, improper expenses, transportation, gifts or loans to encourage you to sign a National Letter of Intent or to attend an NCAA school.

4. A contact is any face-to-face encounter between a prospect or the prospect’s parent(s) or legal guardian(s) and a coach or athletic staff member during which any dialogue occurs in excess of an exchange of greeting. NOTE: At the Division I or II level, athletic representatives (boosters) may not contact you for the purpose of recruiting. A college coach may contact you in-person off the college campus only on or after July 1st after completion of your junior year in high school (exceptions vary by sport).

5. In the sport of football, coaches and athletic department staff (but not boosters) are permitted one phone call from April 15th thru May 31st of the prospects junior year in high school (exceptions vary by sport). After July 1st, following your junior year, a college coach or athletic staff member is limited to one telephone call per week to you (or your parents or legal guardians) except that unlimited phone calls to you (or your parents or legal guardians) may be made under the following circumstances: (1) during the fi ve days immediately before your offi cial visit by the university you will be visiting; (2) on the day of a coach’s off-campus contact with you; (3) during the time beginning with the initial National Letter of Intent signing date; and (4) in the sport of football only, during the permissible off-campus contact periods and during the 48 hours prior to and 48 hours after 7 AM on the initial signing date for the National Letter of Intent. Coaches also may accept collect calls, as well as calls placed by prospects (or parents or legal guardians) at their own expense. Also, universities are permitted to utilize a toll-free (1-800) number to receive telephone calls from you (or your parents or legal guardians) on or after July 1st after completion of your junior year.

6. Letters from coaches (but not boosters) can be sent to prospects on or after September 1st at the beginning of your junior year in high school. A Division I university may provide you with the following printed materials; (1) general correspondence, including letters, US Postal Service postcards and institutional note cards; (2) game programs which may be provided only during offi cial and unoffi cial visits to the university’s campus and may not be mailed; (3) NCAA educational information; (4) pre-enrollment information subsequent to signing a National Letter of Intent with the university; (5) one athletic publication - this media guide - which may include only one color of printing inside the covers; (6) offi cial academic, admissions and student services publications or videotapes produced by the institution and available to all students; (7) questionnaires which may be provided prior to your junior year; and (8) summer camp brochures which may be provided prior to your junior year.

7. An evaluation is any off-campus activity designed to assess your academic qualifi cations or athletic ability, including any visit to your high school (during which no contact occurs) or the observations of any practice or competition in which you participate. In the sport of football, coaches are limited to evaluating a prospect on three occasions (two in the spring evaluation period and one in the fall evaluation period). In women’s basketball, coaches are limited to fi ve recruiting opportunities (contacts and evaluations) during the academic year and not more than three of the opportunities may be contacts. In all other sports, the coaches are limited to seven recruiting opportunities (contacts and evaluations) during the academic year and not more than three of the opportunities may be contacts.

8. It is not permissible for an athletic representative (booster) to provide transportation to or from campus, or free admission to an athletic event on or off campus, to you, your parents, or your friends. Please contact the athletic compliance offi ce to discuss any travel situations in which you or your family are not providing your own transportation to ensure that it is permissible.

9. This information applies to OSU POSSE Club and OSU Alumni Club activities. You can only attend an OSU Club luncheon/meeting under certain circumstances; if the luncheon/meeting is open to the general public, you can attend. However, you must pay for your own meal and transportation unless the meal or transportation was made available to all other guests (e.g., all high school seniors from the local community). In addition, you may be invited to attend a function, but the invitation cannot be limited only to athletes, and it must be made available for non-athletic reasons (e.g., senior night, incoming OSU freshmen night, etc.). This same restriction will continue to apply after you sign a National Letter of Intent with Oklahoma State University. Committing to Oklahoma State does not change this rule. An OSU signee must be treated the same as any other high school student. Because you cannot be contacted by athletic representatives (boosters), invitations to OSU functions must be given in the same manner that they are given to all students participating in the function. Invitations may be sent to the high schools or advertised in your local newspaper indicating what the invitation entails but cannot be issued only to prospects who will participate in athletics at OSU. In addition, you or any other prospects in attendance cannot be singled out to be introduced as this would be a violation of NCAA publicity legislation related to prospects.

10. Please contact the OSU Athletic Compliance staff with any questions. Scott Williams, Associate Athletic Director for Compliance at 405-744-2525, or Ben Dyson, Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance at 405-744-8166.

Jon Kolb (OSU, ’69) and Thurman Thomas (OSU, ‘87) have played in the most Super Bowls with four. Kolb was with the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl IX, X, XIII and XIV, where his team was victorious in all four games. In two games, more than one former Cowboy competed.

In game IX, Terry Brown’s Vikings were defeated by Jon Kolb’s Steelers. In game XXV, both Matt Monger’s and Thurman Thomas’ Bills lost to John Washington’s N. Y. Giants. The Cowboys are 9-14 in those 20 games, including the multiple-player games. Offensive lineman Charlie Johnson was key in the Colts’ win in Super Bowl XLI.

THEGREATESTSEASONEVERIn 1988, the world changed for a quiet, unassuming running back from Wichita, Kan., and for a generation of football fans.

For running back Barry Sanders, his days of anonymity were over – forever. For football fans, their defi nition of greatness was changed – forever.

Barry Sanders fi rst made his assault on the title of best running back with a junior season at Oklahoma State that remains, quite simply, the best ever. His numbers are still staggering, nearly two decades later – his records unmatched. It is his name that shines the brightest among a throng of Oklahoma State runners that have earned all-conference and All-America honors and helped the school earn the title of Tailback U.

Although his school, conference and NCAA records are too lengthy to list here, a sampling includes:

FROM THE NCAA RECORD BOOK…

2,628 Rushing yards in a season

3,249 All-purpose yards in a season

295.4 All-purpose yards per game

238.9 Average rushing yards per game

39 Touchdowns in a single season

37 Rushing touchdowns in a season

21.29 Points per game

4 300-yard rushing games in a season

625 Rushing yards in two games

937 Rushing yards in three games

1,162 Rushing yards in four games

FOLIFE AS A COWBOY

The Oklahoma State Cowboys live a busy life. But they are not too busy to appreciate their lot in life and to lend a helping hand to others in Stillwater and around the state of Oklahoma.

While preparing for their annual holiday Bedlam clash, many of the Cowboys were on hand to deliver turkeys to the less fortunate during the week of Thanksgiving.

The football players were joined by other student-athletes, members of the cheer and dance teams, and Pistol Pete in Lawton to assist in the rebuilding of a home. The effort was part of ABC TV’s Extreme Makeover Home Edition.

And one of the annual highlights of being a Cowboy comes each spring when the City of Stillwater and the OSU campus plays host to the Oklahoma Special Olympics.

LIFE AS A COWBOY

ESPN GameDay has made its way to Oklahoma State for both football and basketball. In fact, OSU became the fi rst school to host the GameDay crew for both sports.

The same weekend as the basketball visit by GameDay, ESPN2’s “Cold Pizza” telecast live from the OSU campus and the newest member of the ESPN family, ESPNU, was launched from Oklahoma State.

Oklahoma State fans also follow the Cowboys on a radio network that blankets the state of Oklahoma.

LIFE AS A COWBOY

Oklahoma State recorded some marquee victories in 2006 with its fi rst win (in its fi rst meeting) over Alabama and a second straight home victory over Big 12 North champ Nebraska.

Some other highlights from past years include…

1 • 1944-1945Led by Bob Fenimore and Neill Armstrong, Oklahoma A&M was one of America’s dominant teams at the conclusion of World War II. Behind the duo, the Aggies posted a two-year record of 17-1 and claimed Sugar and Cotton Bowl victories. During that period, the Aggies outscored OU by a combined 75-6 count. Both Armstrong and Fenimore earned All-America honors, becoming the fi rst Oklahoma A&M players to accomplish the feat. The 1945 squad was Oklahoma State’s fi rst undefeated team.

2 • BEDLAM STREAKThe Cowboys ended a losing streak against Oklahoma with a pair of one-point victories over the Sooners in 1965 and 1966. In 1965, OSU got 76 rushing yards and a TD from Walt Garrison and 12 tackles from Charles Harper in the 17-16 win. It was the fi rst victory for the orange and black in Norman in 20 years. The following year, quarterback Ron Johnson ran

3 • CHAMPSThe 1976 Cowboys of Jim Stanley earned a share of the Big Eight championship during a 9-3 season. The campaign culminated with a Tangerine Bowl victory over Brigham Young. Critical to the success of the season was a 31-24 victory at No. 5 Oklahoma as Terry Miller rushed for 159 yards and OSU rallied from a 17-14 halftime defi cit.

4 • THE F IRST BARRYThe 1984 Gator Bowl announced OSU’s re-emergence on the national stage as ninth-ranked Oklahoma State scored late for the win (21-14) over South Carolina. Quarterback Rusty Hilger found tight end Barry Hanna for a 25-yard touchdown with just 1:04 remaining in the game for the fi nal points. Hanna carried a handful of SC players across the goal line to clinch it. The victory capped off the fi rst 10-win season in OSU history and it came in Pat Jones’ fi rst year as the OSU head coach.

O S U F O O T B A L L H I S T O RY5 • SNOW IN THE SUNOklahoma State wrapped up another 10-win season in 1987 with a dramatic 35-33 Sun Bowl win over West Virgina. Thurman Thomas ran for 157 yards and four scores in weather that fl uctuated between sunny and blizzard. Despite the offensive fi repower, it was Shawn Mackey’s tackle on a Mountaineer two-point try with just 1:13 remaining that clinched the victory.

6 • THE HEISMANThe greatest individual season in the history of college football came in 1988 and was authored by Barry Sanders of Oklahoma State. Sanders rushed for more than 2,600 yards and re-wrote the NCAA record book as he led the most potent offense in OSU history on his way to the Heisman Trophy. He was joined on the offensive attack by the Big Eight’s all-time leading passer and the league’s all-time leading receiver (Mike Gundy and Hart Lee Dykes).

7 • 16-13In one of the most shocking results in Bedlam history and certainly the biggest upset of 2001, the 3-7 Oklahoma State Cowboys knocked No. 4 Oklahoma out of the national title hunt with a 16-13, come-from-behind win in Norman. Rashaun Woods caught a 14-yard pass from Josh Fields with 1:36 remaining for the game’s fi nal points. OU was limited to just 220 yards. OSU got a pair of 52-yard fi eld goals from Luke Phillips.

8 • COTTON ENCOREOklahoma State returned to the Cotton Bowl for the fi rst time since the 1940s following a 9-3 regular-season campaign in 2003. The season included a 38-10 win at Texas A&M and a 38-34 come-from-behind victory over Kansas State.
