Camp! What an amazing way to spend part of a summer!!

them to make friends.
Can you help? Please consider sponsoring a child at camp for a
morning, a day or a week. If we all work together we can make
this happen. Please email Christine at

how we can make this work.

Emmanuel United Church Youth Mission Partners
Success takes many forms at The Ottawa Mission – for those
suffering from an addiction it might mean a single day, week
or month of sobriety; for someone with a mental illness, it
might mean finding the right medication; for someone out of
work, it might mean learning how to put together a good
resume; for someone who is alone and dying, it might mean
reconnecting with a family member.
Emmanuel youth and leaders will be at the Ottawa Mission on
Sunday May 15.
The JAM practice schedule in May will be as follows:
Sunday, May 1 in the Sanctuary after church
Sunday, May 8 in the Sanctuary after church
Saturday, May 14 in the Sanctuary 3:30pm
Sunday, May 15 in the Sanctuary 8:45am.
JAM Road Trip
The group has received an invitation to play at a service at
Carleton Memorial United Church in late May or early June.
Post-Secondary Bursary Fund
This bursary is to be paid to a deserving Emmanuel student
commencing a full-time post-secondary program. The
deadline for application is June 5, 2016. The program must
be started sometime in the calendar year following that date.
The student can be up to the age of twenty-four years. The
application is available on the youth board or the website.

Ed Bianchi of Kairos will lead us in The Blanket Exercise,
which is a way to increase awareness of some of the historical
underpinnings of the aboriginal/colonial interface that led to
the residential school experience, and the resulting Truth and
Reconciliation Commission (the TRC).
At Emmanuel, we have had a series of people talking about the
TRC (Jamie Scott, Dr. Marie Wilson, former Chief Gilbert
Whiteduck, CBC reporter Waubgeshig Rice, among others).
Through the blanket exercise, we can explore some of the
history, and brainstorm how we, as a faith community, can
move forward to embrace a portion of the reconciliation call to

action in our attempts at improved Right Relations.
For more information, contact Phyllis MacRae, Norman
Williams, Mary Turnbull or Carol Scott
Wed May 25 – Learn to make papusas
If you have visited our Global Partner in El Salvador you have
had this wonderful treat. A pupusa is a traditional Salvadoran
dish made of a thick, handmade cornmeal that is usually filled
with a blend of cheese (queso), refried beans (frijoles refritos),
queso con loroco (loroco is a vine flower bud from Central
America) and sometimes cooked and seasoned pork meat
ground to a paste consistency (chicharron).
Nadina Lopez will teach us how to make pupusas. Sign up
soon to save a spot. $5 fee to cover cost of groceries.
Wed June 1 – Syria then and Now
Syria is a country with an ancient culture. It has been
repeatedly invaded and colonized throughout history, leading
to the patchwork of religions and cultures that have existed to
modern times. Attempts to keep the country together led to one
party rule by a minority religious group, and ultimately to the
civil war that started in 2011. The surrounding countries and
world bodies are now trying to deal with the resulting outflow
of migrants. Jon Jones will provide some background to help
us understand the current situation in Syria.
Pilgrimage 2016
Whether we journey along a distant path or a path nearby, we
are hoping to see the world with new eyes. As we travel with
others and share together what the journey means, we receive
more light. Life goes by so quickly so we need time out, time
away, time to reflect on what we are learning along the way.
We are pilgrims on a journey, fellow travellers on the road,
we are here to help each other walk the mile and bear the
load....

DON’T BE AN INTERNET TURKEY
Backing Up Your Important Data
Why should you back up your data?
Computer hard disk drives have a hard
time of it, spinning round for eight hours
or more a day, heating up and cooling
down, experiencing the odd physical
knock, constantly having data written or erased ... and all of
this happening inside a hot metal case with electricity coursing
in all directions. It goes without saying that sometimes your
drive is not going to survive this hostile environment.
Recovering data from a hard disk which has failed is an
expensive process.
As if the threat of hardware failure was not enough, you must
also contend with the possibility of virus attack. There has
been a surge in the number of e-mail viruses in recent months
and there have been numerous instances where a lapse in
concentration, or clicking a button on a dialogue box without
reading the message displayed, has led to F-Secure deleting the
entire contents of the email inbox because someone has sent a
virus to you via e-mail. In addition the seemingly constant
assaults on Microsoft's security failings have led to ever-more
sophisticated Internet viruses being unleashed on PC users.
![Page 12: LIFE AND WORK OF - emmanuelunited.ca · LIFE AND WORK OF EMMANUEL UNITED CHURCH MAY 2016 June Issue Submission Deadline: By noon on Monday, May 23, 2016 WELCOME TO EMMANUEL UNITED](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022070802/5f02bd157e708231d405c479/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Of course, you could disconnect your PC from the network,
never use the Internet, and refuse to read any disks given to
you by others. You would almost certainly remain virus-free
but you wouldn't be very productive at work. A safer
alternative is to accept that computers will break down, and
that being infected by a computer virus is a probability, so
planning a means of minimising the effects of a malicious
attack or system failure is a good idea. Although Macintosh
computers are largely unaffected by virus attacks they are not
immune to hardware failure so backing up data is just as
relevant to these computer users as well.
All this doom and gloom could be hard to take but, with a little
planning and some time spent on a regular basis, you can
reduce the potential disaster of hardware failure or virus attack
to a mere inconvenience. To add a reasonable level of
protection to your PC there are three things all PC users must
do on a regular basis:
1) Keep anti-virus databases and virus strings up to date
2) Install all Microsoft critical updates and patches as soon
as they become available
3) Regularly back up important data held on your own
machine
Here we should point out the difference between a backup and
an archive. Backups are short-term copies of current data to be
used in the event of an accident or hardware failure, and
archives are long-term copies of data which may or may not be
current, but are important to you. For true archiving purposes
you should not compress the data since this is likely to impose
upon it a format which may be unreadable in years to come.
This article is not about archives, but offers practical advice
about making backup copies.
![Page 13: LIFE AND WORK OF - emmanuelunited.ca · LIFE AND WORK OF EMMANUEL UNITED CHURCH MAY 2016 June Issue Submission Deadline: By noon on Monday, May 23, 2016 WELCOME TO EMMANUEL UNITED](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022070802/5f02bd157e708231d405c479/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Backing up the data on your own PC or Macintosh computer is
your responsibility. With a little thought a regular backup
routine can be initiated, with minimal intrusion on your
working day.
What data should you back up?
If you are a PC user, you should regularly back up your My
Documents folder and your mailboxes as a matter of course.
You should also identify any other data which is critical to
your work and back this up as well. When considering
implementing backups you should try to place all of your
important data, including your e-mail mailboxes, within the
My Documents folder. This may mean you have to move your
mailboxes and reconfigure your computer accordingly.
If you use a Macintosh computer you should identify and back
up the folders where you store your data and mailboxes. As
with PC users, you may wish to move your mailboxes and
reconfigure your computer to make the backups easier.
What should you use to back up your data?
Many dedicated software packages are available to allow you
to manage your backups at scheduled times. However, there
can be pitfalls associated with using such software: the use of
proprietary compression and encryption systems may lead to
unrecoverable data should there be a version change in the
backup-and-recovery software. In the past the Microsoft
backup utility was notorious for producing backup files which
could not be restored on later versions of Windows. However,
in view of the large amount of data that we accumulate over
the years there are still obvious advantages in storing it in
compressed form on our backup media. There are various 'safe'
data compression programs on the market, of which PKZIP
and WinZip are the best known. These programs will compress
your data files into a single file (often known confusingly as an
'archive'), and also provide a restoration facility so that you can
extract particular files from the compressed file.
![Page 14: LIFE AND WORK OF - emmanuelunited.ca · LIFE AND WORK OF EMMANUEL UNITED CHURCH MAY 2016 June Issue Submission Deadline: By noon on Monday, May 23, 2016 WELCOME TO EMMANUEL UNITED](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022070802/5f02bd157e708231d405c479/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Backups can be implemented with easily obtainable software,
using writeable CD or DVD disks as storage media. The cost
per megabyte of backing up to CD or DVD disk is minimal
and the hardware required is inexpensive.
As the cost of backup media is so low, we suggest that most
users' needs will be satisfied by merely copying their data to
CD or DVD disks on a regular basis. If you wish to regularly
back up the same data the copying software will allow you to
create and save a configuration file with details of the files to
be copied. Before creating subsequent backups you open this
file, automatically loading your file list, then click 'go'. Of
course we are simplifying things a little, but once set up, most
users will be able to make a copy of their valuable data in just
a few minutes.
If your backup needs are larger or more sophisticated you
could invest in an external hard drive.
If your backup needs are small then backing up your data to
USB memory sticks may also be an option. USB memory
sticks are suitable for short-term backups but are quite
unsuitable for archiving material as there is a question-mark
over their ability to retain data over a long period of time
(editor’s comment – I have had USB drives go bad on me).
COMMUNITY EVENTS
Funeral Information Society of Ottawa
Place and Time: Monday, May 2, 2016, 7:30 p.m.
Location: Emmanuel United Church
Planning Ahead for Your End-of-Life Over the years you have
probably planned for many events such as weddings,
vacations, your retirement and even your funeral. But if you
are like most people, you have probably not planned for the
medical treatment or palliative care you would like to receive
if you became critically ill.
![Page 15: LIFE AND WORK OF - emmanuelunited.ca · LIFE AND WORK OF EMMANUEL UNITED CHURCH MAY 2016 June Issue Submission Deadline: By noon on Monday, May 23, 2016 WELCOME TO EMMANUEL UNITED](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022070802/5f02bd157e708231d405c479/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
This year’s AGM keynote presentation will consider the much-
debated subject of how to plan your death. If you are a
mentally competent adult who has a serious and incurable
illness, disease or disability, who is suffering intolerably and
for whom death is reasonably foreseeable, you may fall under
the provisions of Bill C-14, expected to pass before June 6.
That means that in addition to advance planning directives and
options for palliative and end-of-life care, your wishes for
physician assistance to end your life should be respected.
Might you consider making use of this? Hear the views of our
panelists, with a discussion to follow.
Panelists are:
Dr. John Last, OC, MD, FRCPC, is an epidemiologist. He has
contributed to public health, higher education, especially in the
public health reference literature and to clarifying related
ethical issues. He is a retired professor of epidemiology and
community medicine at the University of Ottawa.
Arthur Milner is a playwright, theatre director and journalist.
His most recent play, Getting to Room Temperature, was
inspired by his mother’s quest for euthanasia. He is a former
GCTC artistic director and is a columnist with Inroads, the
Canadian Journal of Opinion.
Jonathan Wouk, PhD, is a retired hospital chaplain and
Jewish Community (Ottawa) Chaplain in long-term care.

GLOBAL PARTNERS COMMITTEE
Please join us tonight, May 1, for an Emmanuel Café at 7:00
p.m. in the CE Hall, and hear all about the Peace Conference
that Phyllis attended in El Salvador with a delegation of the
United Church of Canada.
Once again this August, Emmanuel will be supporting Camp
Chipembi, for children and youth in Chipembi, Zambia. There
will be opportunities to support this project through purchases
of virtual t-shirts and lunches during Coffee and Conversation
throughout May. Thank you for your generous support.
HEALTH COMMITTEE
Take Time to be Wholely
There will be no exercise class on Monday May 23rd as it is
Victoria Day Monday.
Spring is here, I guess. The weather is warming, I was able to
sit out and I began to think of dining out on the patio and that
brought me to thinking about how quickly food spoils in the
summer heat and that brought me to thinking about food safety
and what’s in our refrigerators that maybe shouldn’t be there.
My thinking wanders a lot. Things get pushed to the back of a
fridge and then live there way beyond their expiry dates or
until the green mould on the yogurt begins to look like it’s a
salad. Most of us are guilty of keeping food items beyond
when we should, it’s our frugal natures. I check the church
fridges for outdated stuff every month and turf it, I should do
the same to the house fridge but I don’t. Then there’s the food
pantry, when was the last time you checked the “best before
date” on all the cans you’ve been keeping? We do it in the
TTtbW cupboard twice a year and we always find something
out of date. I know what you’re thinking; what difference is it
going to make if it’s a little out of date OR we can just scrape
off the top and it should be good to go.
![Page 20: LIFE AND WORK OF - emmanuelunited.ca · LIFE AND WORK OF EMMANUEL UNITED CHURCH MAY 2016 June Issue Submission Deadline: By noon on Monday, May 23, 2016 WELCOME TO EMMANUEL UNITED](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022070802/5f02bd157e708231d405c479/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Here’s an article from the Canada Food Safety Guide that gave
me food for thought (pun intended).
Something you ate??? What is food poisoning?
Food poisoning (also known as foodborne illness or food-
related illness) is caused by eating food that has been
contaminated by bacteria, viruses or parasites. Food can
become contaminated by these microorganisms at any time
before you eat it, including at home during:
Handling
storing
cooking
There are many signs of food poisoning, but most types cause
one or more of the following:
nausea
vomiting
diarrhea
stomach pain and cramps
fever and chills
Symptoms can start within hours after eating the contaminated
food, or sometimes not until days or even weeks later. Usually,
people recover quickly and completely.
However, food poisoning sometimes causes serious
complications, including death. This is the case for people who
are more at risk for both food poisoning and related health
complications, like older adults.
Food poisoning and adults ages 60 and over
Most people who get food poisoning can have a full recovery.
But for older adults, serious longer-term problems can be more
common. As people get older, it becomes harder for their
immune system to protect them from food poisoning. Chronic
diseases, such as diabetes and kidney disease, can make it even
more difficult to fight off infections.
![Page 21: LIFE AND WORK OF - emmanuelunited.ca · LIFE AND WORK OF EMMANUEL UNITED CHURCH MAY 2016 June Issue Submission Deadline: By noon on Monday, May 23, 2016 WELCOME TO EMMANUEL UNITED](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022070802/5f02bd157e708231d405c479/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
It is very important for older adults, and people who prepare
food for older adults, to follow safe food handling and cooking
practices.
General food safety tips CANADIAN
Everyone should practice general food safety precautions at all
times:
Bacteria can grow in the danger zone between 4 °C and 60 °C
(40 °F to 140 °F). Keep cold foods cold at or below 4 °C
(40 °F) and keep hot foods hot at or above 60 °C (140 °F).
Place raw meat, poultry and seafood in containers on the
bottom shelf of the refrigerator. Use containers that are large
enough to prevent raw juices from dripping onto other food or
touching other food.
Keep raw food away from other food while shopping, storing,
preparing and serving foods.
Wash fresh fruits and vegetables before eating them, clean
counters and cutting boards and wash your hands regularly.
Read labels and follow cooking and storage instructions for all
foods. Make sure to check the “best before” date, and if you
find something on the shelf that has expired, let the store
know.
Use warm soapy water to clean knives, cutting boards,
utensils, your hands and any surfaces that have come in
contact with food, especially meat and fish.
Refrigerate or freeze perishable food within two hours of
cooking.
Freeze or consume leftovers within four days of cooking.
Always reheat leftovers until steaming hot before eating.
![Page 22: LIFE AND WORK OF - emmanuelunited.ca · LIFE AND WORK OF EMMANUEL UNITED CHURCH MAY 2016 June Issue Submission Deadline: By noon on Monday, May 23, 2016 WELCOME TO EMMANUEL UNITED](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022070802/5f02bd157e708231d405c479/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Keep refrigerators clean and at a temperature below 4 °C
(40 °F). Install a thermometer in your fridge to be sure.
Like many other harmful bacteria that could be in our food, E.
coli bacteria are destroyed when food is cooked to a certain
internal temperature. Use a digital food thermometer to
measure the internal temperature of your food so that you are
sure that it is cooked properly. You can’t tell by looking.
Cook your food to a safe internal temperature.
Safety tips
Did you know?
You can't tell if food is unsafe by its smell or taste. When in
doubt, throw it out!
Storing food properly is an important part of protecting
yourself and your family from food poisoning.
If you would like a list of freezer and refrigerator storage
times, pick up a copy in the narthex or contact Don Hamilton
or the church office.

Update on Search for Supply Ministers and
Joint Needs Assessment
The Supply Search Committee and the Joint Needs
Assessment Committee have been busy since being appointed
by Council on March 15. Here is a brief update on their recent
work.
Supply Search Committee
The Supply Search Committee is looking for candidates for
two positions – an Ordained Supply Minister and a Supply
Christian Education Minister. The steps are to identify
candidates in April, followed by interviews with the candidates
in early May, and then a recommendation to Council of the
preferred candidate in June. The Committee is presently
evaluating the candidates identified to date.
The goal is to have a supply ministry team in place by early
September to serve as our Ministers until the end of June 2017.
Joint Needs Assessment Committee
The Joint Needs Assessment Committee has been meeting
weekly since March 21. Work is underway on drafting the six
profiles that will make up the final needs assessment report.
Profile 1 contains information on the demographic and
financial picture of Emmanuel and a description of the
Church’s community. Profile 2 is called the Living Ministry
Profile; it contains our responses to a dozen questions
pertaining to all aspects of Church life.
A questionnaire was designed to help gather congregational
input to guide the committee in completing the JNA report.
The JNAC committee thanks everyone who has taken time to
fill in the questionnaire and apologizes to those who had
trouble with the on-line pdf version. If you haven’t filled one
in yet, we would really like to receive your thoughts. Paper
copies are available in the narthex and a Word version is
![Page 25: LIFE AND WORK OF - emmanuelunited.ca · LIFE AND WORK OF EMMANUEL UNITED CHURCH MAY 2016 June Issue Submission Deadline: By noon on Monday, May 23, 2016 WELCOME TO EMMANUEL UNITED](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022070802/5f02bd157e708231d405c479/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
available to download from the Emmanuel website. The
deadline for filling in the questionnaire is May 2.
The Committee appreciates the contribution by other groups to
the needs assessment work. Part of the preparation for
thinking about the future needs of the congregation is to
develop a picture of the age distribution of the Emmanuel
congregation. This interesting demographic picture was
developed on April 24 by Ellen Brohman, Ed Borza, Carmen
Contreras, Ron Squires, and Joyce White. The map showing
the distribution of the residences of the Emmanuel
congregation has been updated by Pierre Peron. The Finance
Committee will be making a projection of Emmanuel’s income
and expenses for the years 2017, 2018 and 2019.
Looking ahead to early June, the Committee will be organizing
a workshop on Saturday June 4 in order to share the
information gathered in Profile 1 and Profile 2 and to hear
your views on the Joint Needs Assessment. Transportation to
and from your home will be provided for those who need a
ride. Stay tuned for the announcement of further details.
The Joint Needs Assessment Committee welcomes any
questions or ideas you may have to help create a complete
picture of Emmanuel for the JNAC final report. Please don’t
hesitate to speak to any member of the committee.

MINUTE FOR MISSION
A Call for Peace and Prayer
A prolonged civil war that began in 1996 has led to
extreme violence and human rights abuses in the
Democratic Republic of Congo. Women and girls
![Page 26: LIFE AND WORK OF - emmanuelunited.ca · LIFE AND WORK OF EMMANUEL UNITED CHURCH MAY 2016 June Issue Submission Deadline: By noon on Monday, May 23, 2016 WELCOME TO EMMANUEL UNITED](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022070802/5f02bd157e708231d405c479/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
are bearing the brunt of the atrocities, suffering widespread
sexual violence and abuse.
Mission & Service partner L’Église du Christ au Congo has
issued a “cri d’alarme” to the world highlighting the urgency
of the situation. The Rev. Nzeba Kalombo Berthe, General
Secretary of the Department for Women and Family of the
ECC, says: “This cry of alarm invites us into national
solidarity and compassion to assist these innocent victims to
recover their dignity—but also to offer them hope as future
professional women and honourable mothers.”
Supported by L’Église du Christ au Congo, local women
volunteer to support and accompany survivors, war orphans,
and women’s groups. Families receive support to foster war
orphans and provide them with a loving and safe haven. ECC
also provides funding for school, medical care, and
psychosocial support.
The United Church, in partnership with others, is answering a
call for prayers and action supporting peace in Congo and an
end to the war on women.
We are thankful that our Mission & Service gifts support the
women and children of the Democratic Republic of Congo,
who seek security, dignity, and healing.
Your donations to Mission & Service through Emmanuel’s
General Fund results in over $54,500 in annual contributions.
Thank you.

You’ll be inspired by the story of how St. Luke’s has
transformed its building and its ministry by ‘greening its
sacred space’ and you’ll hear how our own Project Footprint is
breaking new ground for the whole United Church of
Canada. You will also help shape the future of our United
Churches here in Ottawa as we begin to think through the next
four years of Project Footprint together. Whether you are a
long-time eco-activist, or someone who is curious to learn
more about combatting climate change, you will be welcome.
We can’t do this without you. AND … lunch will be
provided!
Seedling Sitters needed at Emmanuel: Emmanuel is aiming
to sprout sixty seedlings this spring for use in the Botsford
Yard and to give away to interested gardeners. From mid-April
to mid-May, we need volunteers to tend the plants, checking
their moisture level and gradually accustoming them to the
outdoors. If you can tend a tray of seedlings, please register
with Janet Mark Wallace.

Community Resource Centre. Non-perishable food items,
bathroom supplies, and school supplies are all welcome.
Next Meetings: The Social Action Committee meets at 11:30
AM on the third Sunday of every month, with the exception of
July and December. Next meetings are May 22nd and June 19th.
WORSHIP COMMITTEE
“This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you
have love for one another.” – John 13:35
“People want something more from church; they long for a
spirituality that connects with their whole life, not just on
Sunday morning.” - Richard Rohr
Something to think about:
- How can our collective worship services for an hour on
Sunday morning enhance our lives for the rest of the
week?
- How can worship inspire, inform and propel us into living
with justice, mercy and grace?
- What aspects of worship can you carry forward into your
personal reflective practices? (prayer, meditation, music,
reading, discussion, questioning, sitting in silence, being
in the midst of swirling activity, …. )

please know that your participation is gratefully appreciated!
Newcomers to any of these worship tasks are most welcome!
Anyone who is curious regarding what is involved, below is
![Page 31: LIFE AND WORK OF - emmanuelunited.ca · LIFE AND WORK OF EMMANUEL UNITED CHURCH MAY 2016 June Issue Submission Deadline: By noon on Monday, May 23, 2016 WELCOME TO EMMANUEL UNITED](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022070802/5f02bd157e708231d405c479/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
some thumbnail info. The coordinators can answer more
specific questions. Please let a coordinator know if you would
like to be involved in any of the following vital roles within
Emmanuel.
Music Ministry Team – Jean Henderson
- Senior Choir – Theresa Clarke
- Emmanubells – Ann Frederking
- JAM – Jim Lamb
- Junior Choir – Janet & Jeremy Wallace
- Red Wing Blackbird – Jeannie Page
Lay Readers – Janet Campbell Reading Scripture is a key part
of a worship service, and a base for much of the sermon’s
reflection regarding current application for our lives. Lay
Readers also participate by leading other parts of the service as
prepared by the minister.
Ushering – Peter Rice Providing a “Welcome to All” is a
hallmark at Emmanuel. Ushers greet, hand out bulletins, take
up the offerings, assist with walkers, answer questions, and
direct visitors to cloakrooms and washrooms.
Decorating – Hilde Reynolds Arrangement of flowers and
special decorating enhances the sanctuary.
Flowers – there is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in the
narthex if you wish to provide flowers/plants as a memorial or
to mark a celebration or special event.
Communion Preparation – Christine Hywarren Teams of
two prepare the communion elements the day before and set up
the communion table the morning prior to the worship service.
Communion Servers – Jennifer Mogridge Teams of four or
six are required to serve communion by tray or intinction
during worship several times a year.
![Page 32: LIFE AND WORK OF - emmanuelunited.ca · LIFE AND WORK OF EMMANUEL UNITED CHURCH MAY 2016 June Issue Submission Deadline: By noon on Monday, May 23, 2016 WELCOME TO EMMANUEL UNITED](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022070802/5f02bd157e708231d405c479/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
Symbollic Communion Loaf – Carol Scott The loaf that
gets blessed and broken during Communion is prepared by
hand with prayer by volunteers in their home. The cubed
bread served during communion is store-bought and prepared
by Christine’s team.
Prayer Circle – Peter Lougheed 613-733-0437 There is a
variety of ways individuals can be supported through prayer.
1) before or during the worship service, a clip board is passed
around for those wishing to write down requests, which get
incorporated into the Prayers of the People by the minister; 2)
a prayer box and paper is available in the narthex, which is
emptied weekly by someone from the pastoral care team and
shared with respect and with confidentiality with members of
the prayer team; 3) once a month following the worship
service, personal prayers can be offered with a prayer
facilitator; 4) the prayer table in the sanctuary is available to
individuals for quiet reflective time (during office hours).
Coffee and Conversation – Irene Bakker Teams of 4 people
prepare and serve coffee, tea, and lemonade.
Some individuals have oversight for the following
responsibilities, and call on people to assist as needed:
Liturgical Banners - Joan Foster-Jones
Candle Preparation - Nanette Whitwam
Minute for Mission - Stephanie Warren
Hospitality - Shelley Ferrell
Collectively, we can help each other connect to a common
story, the mystery of God and the Universe, and the
significance of our lives when we participate as the hands and
feet of Christ.
