Affordable Mini Makeovers for the HolidaysThe season for indoor gatherings has arrived and everyone is looking for ways to bring the excitement into their homes. With tighter budgets available for remodeling, choosing paint for your mini-make over projects may be the smartest way to "go new."

Frozen Pipe RepairIf you think your pipes have frozen, you need to act quickly to get them unfrozen or risk having the pipe burst from the internal pressure. Once a pipe burst it can send hundreds of gallons of water gushing into your home within just hours and if you’re not home to catch it the damage can be quite extensive.

The first thing you will need to do is find the frozen pipe. If the pipe is an exposed pipe it will be easier to access and easier to defrost than a pipe that is behind a wall or in the ceiling. You may need to consider cutting a section of wall or ceiling away to access the frozen pipe if it is concealed. Once you find the pipe you will need to check it for bulging or cracks. A pipe with cracks or beginning to bulge is near its breaking point and can burst at any time so you will need to do a few things quickly to avoid disaster.

The first thing you will need to do before you do anything else is locate your main water shut off valve. You will need to be able to get to this quickly if your pipes burst before you can defrost them so it’s a good idea to have someone at the ready to shut off the water supply.

The most highly recommend method to defrost your pipe is a hair dryer set to a high setting. Keep the air moving along the pipe working your way from the area of the main intake to the frozen

area. Keep moving your hair dryer, being careful not to concentrate to long in any one area. If the pipe is close to a wall you can try and put a metal cookie sheet behind the pipe to reflect the heat of the hair dryer back onto the pipe and make the make the job a little easier.

You can also try wrapping hot wet rags to the pipe but don’t pour hot water over the pipes; the sudden thaw from pouring water over the pipes, can cause the pipe to burst. And of course as tempting as it may be to do so, don’t use an open flame to defrost the frozen pipe. Not only will an open flame work to quickly it is also a dangerous idea. Many homes have been burned and damaged from homeowners attempting to use a torch to melt their pipes only to lose control and cause a fire. (ArticlesFactory.com)

Help For Homeless VetsThe Department of Veterans Affairs is reaching out to homeless Veterans by providing free meals and spending money to eligible homeless Veterans.

“vA is committed to ending homelessness for our veterans who defended our nation. I am pleased the Canteen Service has added these incentives that help veterans get off the streets and into the care and housing they need,” said Secretary of veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki.

The free meals will be offered at veterans Canteen Service (vCS) cafeterias to homeless veterans attending their first vA medical appointment. New veterans participating in the Housing and Urban Development and vA Supportive Housing program who present signed leases will also receive a $20 coupon to be used in vCS retail stores located at every vA medical center.

“A free meal and a few free items may not seem like much, but it can be a world of difference to a person getting back on their feet and seeking recovery and independence,” said vCS Director Marilyn Iverson. (RealEstateRama)

Preparing a home for winter will take time and should not be rushed. Neglecting certain projects or carelessly completing them can lead to major system failures, extensive damage and in extreme cases even health problems.

"Procrastinating can cost you when it comes to getting ready for winter," says Rhonda Hills, of Kudzu.com. "Systems that are not ready for heavy use can falter or even fail. This can be a recipe for disaster."

The home experts at Kudzu.com recommend the following actions to get the home ready for the cooler temperatures ahead.

Have the chimney inspected and cleaned - If you have a wood-burning fireplace, the inside of the chimney can be a dirty place, and this has the potential to cause some problems if not addressed. Over time a combustible material called creosote can build up on the inside of the chimney. If not regularly removed, this substance can catch fire, causing major damage to the home and resulting in serious injuries or even death. Chimneys should be inspected and cleaned by a professional

at least once a year to ensure all creosote is removed and the chimney is ready for use.

Get the furnace serviced - Heating systems will be putting in a lot of overtime as the temperatures plummet, and it is important to have them serviced so they can handle the load. Well maintained systems will operate more efficiently, which lowers heating costs. They will have a longer lifespan too. During an inspection, the heating expert will evaluate and clean the heat exchanger, ensure the burners and pilots ignite properly, clean the system's blower and more.

Seal all air ducts - Air ducts can be punctured, torn or become disconnected, all of which will cause heated air to spew into the attic, basement or crawlspace before it reaches the home's interior. These leaks waste a lot of energy and can cause heating bills to be much higher than they should be. To ensure all of the heated and cooled air that is being paid for makes its way into the living space, patch and repair all ducts as soon as possible.

Add insulation - According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 80 percent of homes built before

1980 are not well insulated, so chances are your home is not as insulated as it should be. Adding insulation is one of the fastest, cheapest ways to retain heat and save on heating bills. Insulation is available in a variety of materials and is rated by R-values, or how well the insulation resists the transfer of heat. Insulation needs will vary by region and are dependent on local climate conditions and heating costs.

Protect pipes and exterior faucets - Freezing temperatures can wreak havoc on pipes and exterior faucets. As water freezes, it expands and can burst plumbing lines and fixtures. These ruptures cause a great deal of damage to the home and leave homeowners with some very expensive repairs. Before cooler temperatures settle in, wrap all exposed plumbing in insulation to ensure the pipes are ready for the worst Old Man Winter can dish out.

Solar landscaping lights in containers work great next to the front door with a spot light angled to accent that beautiful tree. Want the apartment balcony to express a festive spirit? Set the mood and accent the desired focal points by incorpo-rating other creative lighting. Try a string of festive

lights across the balcony and evergreens in decorative pots.

Live evergreens of every size and shape are abundantly available in most areas at this time of year. You can easily plant them in yards in warmer regions, or pop them into a container to be placed on the front steps or along the walk-way to welcome guests.

Many types of these evergreens are available in most home improvement stores nationwide. Add your own lights for a personal touch. "All ice melters work in basically the same way, by lowering the temperature at which water freezes," says Jerry Poe, technical director for North American Salt Company, which markets the Safe Step line of residential ice melters. "But many of today's ice melt products provide a host of benefits beyond simply melting ice."

Rock salt is the old standby. Economical and reliable, it easily melts ice in temperatures down to 5 degrees Fahrenheit and keeps sidewalks and driveways clear and safe. Rock salt is particularly good for moderate climates and is safe to handle and store. But, be sure to use it carefully around landscaping, as some plants might be sensitive to chlorides.

For colder, more severe climates, salt alternatives such as magnesium chloride or calcium chloride offer increased melting power. Magnesium chloride is an excellent choice for homeowners. It melts ice in temperatures as low as minus 15 degrees Fahrenheit, yet it is gentle on landscaping and concrete. It also produces minimal residue, so it is less likely to be tracked indoors, and if it is, it is easily cleaned up with water.

Because magnesium chloride's natural form has water molecules attached to it, it dissolves quickly to make brine. The brine spreads through the melting ice, breaking the ice's bond with the driveway or sidewalk, and it works for longer periods of time than many other ice melters.

Calcium chloride also works well in colder

temperatures, but it requires homeowners to wear goggles and gloves when applying it to concrete because it can burn skin. It can also cause more damage to landscaping and concrete, and it produces a slippery residue that can be difficult to remove if tracked indoors.

Ice melt blends are another option for homeowners that can be economical and may also provide some additional benefits beyond simply melting ice. Blends typically contain rock salt mixed with magnesium chloride, calcium chloride, and other additives to provide enhanced melting power, protection for concrete surfaces, safety for pets and even coloring to assist with even application.

If homeowners need strong ice melting power and have landscaping or concrete concerns,

Poe says magnesium chloride is the best choice. It's safer than calcium chloride, and it's available to homeowners as a 100 percent magnesium chloride formula as well as in ice melt blends.

Magnesium chloride also works well for households with pets. Because it is gentler than other ice melt products, it doesn't burn paws that have been cracked in cold tempera-tures, and it is less likely to clump between a pet's paw pads.
