The ChallengeAs part of reforms to the national curriculum, the current system of “levels” used to report children’s attainment and progress was removed in September 2014 and not replaced. The programmes of study within the new National curriculum sets out expectations at the end of each key stage and we are free to develop a curriculum relevant to our students that is based upon this content.

The curriculum must include an assessment system which enables us to check whether they are on track what students have learned and whether they are on track to meet expectations at the end of the key stage, and report regularly to parents.

The PlungeWhole Academy INSET - Dylan Wiliam (Sept 2014)Sparked enthusiasm - bespoke curriculum design, Big IdeasMAT growth brought opportunity to embrace change

“[The] freedom presented by the recent changes is obviously a little daunting”, the chance to “design an assessment system that works for the school, rather than the other way round, represents an extraordinary opportunity for schools”.SSAT Redesigning Schooling pamphlet, Principled Assessment Design, Professor Dylan Wiliam

Professional Development Group (Thurs CPL)There were 7 pilots running in the following subjects:

Each were based upon the concept of breaking the relevant curriculum into “Big Ideas” and KSU (knowledge, skills and understanding)

KS3 Curriculum September 2015Life After Levels development work in subject areas started with these questions:

What Knowledge, Skills and Understanding do you want students to learn in order to be prepared for GCSE?

How will KS3 NC and current knowledge of GCSE specification requirements inform your planning? What are your “Big Ideas” and KSU for your subject area? How will these engage students to make/exceed expected progress? What attributes/skills would you expect a student to demonstrate as they progress through KS3?

What are Big Ideas?Key concepts/themes that encompass the relevant Knowledge, Skills and Understanding we want students to learn in order to be prepared for GCSE?

How do we best establish what they are?Use KS3 NC and current knowledge of GCSE specification requirements to create a bespoke KS3 curriculum, relevant for our learners

What is a Progress Grid?Banded ‘statements of learning’ for each Big Idea that describe the attributes/skills we would expect a student to demonstrate in order to make progress in KS3

How do we best establish what they are?Consider your utopian ideal of your most able student and what you would want them to have mastered by the end of Year 8, then work backwards indicating the stages of progress they would go through to reach that standard

How will it work in practice?Formative Assessment

● No numbers● No grades● No labels● No levels● No comparison to other students● No rank orders

● Quality, robust, formative assessment drives cycle of teaching, learning and intervention

How will it work in practice?Tracking Progress

● Calendared data snapshots capture progress (G4S)● Progress grids need to ‘drive’ the data capture software (not the other way around)● Agreed assessment points - subject driven

Relevant Big Ideas column(s) on Progress Grid for that particular assessment point (dependent on point in the year/scheme of learning) Select appropriate Statements of Learning Input to marksheets on G4S - each Big Idea will have a marksheet assigned to it tick boxes indicate which statement of learning has been demonstrated at that assessment point Feedback to students remains formative and written according to that unit of work in line with assessment/feedback policy Students need not see the full grid, just what is relevant for them to improve in the existing unit of work

How will it work in practice? The maths behind it

Aspirational Targets● Targets are set for each subject based on individual pupil benchmark grades for end of key stage 4. These

are derived from FFT (Fischer Family Trust) for the majority of subjects

● For Drama and PE the targets will be based upon information from the GL Assessment Cognitive Ability Tests(CAT4) administered to all Y7 pupils early in the Autumn term

Flight Paths and Progress Tracking● Notional flight paths have been created for each pupil for each subject● End of year 7 and end of year 8 progress targets are derived for each pupil

● At regular assessment points during the year, Go4Schools is used to capture pupil progress, calculate a ‘working at’ value and indicate whether this is below, in-line with or above the expected flight path progress band

● Flight paths can respond to student progress
