The ancient Egyptians believed that the spirit needed the body to live in the afterlife. Some tomb paintings show the preparation of mummies.

Special priests did the embalming.One wore the jackal mask of Anubis, so Anubis could oversee the procedure.
First, a cut was made on the left side.
Next, the lungs, liver, stomach and intestines were taken out. They were dried with a special salt, and then put into canopic jars.

Life after death
Once the body had been mummified, it was ready to be buried.
If the body was of a pharaoh or queen, they would be buried in the burial chamber of a pyramid or in the Valley of the Kings.
