Observer Refresher Day 2015
Policy
The aim of Observers at Lichfield Advanced Motorcyclists Group
is to provide all Associate Members with guidance in preparing for
the IAM Motorcycle Test through a structured process of
continuous improvement in motorcycle control of the highest
quality.
2015 Policy and Programme
Lichfield Advanced Motorcyclists Group

Observer Refresher Day 2015
Objectives
• To provide consistent and progressive ride observation for continuous improvement of Associate Member’s motorcycling skills to, and above, IAM test standard.
• To instil confidence in an Associate Member’s ability to ride a motorcycle that is at IAM standard on every ride.
• To elevate an Associate Member’s understanding of riding a motorcycle – to know the ‘why’ to observations and procedures are followed as well as the ‘how’.
• To encourage Associate Members to take an active role in LAMG life by supporting BoMMs, joining in MMRs and social events whilst externally promoting the Group and the safety issues of motorcycling.

Observer Refresher Day 2015
Policy and Objectives
Why do we need to formalise how we carry out our observing?
Associates should be confident there is a framework to our process.
How good do we need to be?
As good as we can be and maintain that standard – we are volunteers and motorcycling should always be fun as well as safe.
How can we get better?
By talking to fellow Observers and sharing ideas on situations that arise. Involve National Observers in the Group and ask for resolution of situations to be shared amongst fellow Observers. Get feedback from your Associate.

Observer Refresher Day 2015
Always ensure that your riding and that of your Associate is legal: Stay within the speed limits Do not cross a solid white line in the centre of the road unless
permitted to do so by the Highway Code or instructed by a Police Officer
Obey road signs and markings regarding restrictions and access – quiz your Associate on some of the signs and road markings

Observer Refresher Day 2015
Develop your Associate as a ‘thinking rider’ through the Skill for Life programme in a structured and methodical way: Start with core basics – give demo rides for clearer
understanding Ensure your Associate is happy with each section of
development – let them ask lots of questions Encourage them to practice between Observed Runs
2015 Policy and Programme
Lichfield Advanced Motorcyclists Group
http://www.lamg.uk.net
Observer Refresher Day 2015
Continually improve your own skills as an Observer: Refer to relevant sections of HTBABR and Highway Code Try to answer questions with questions – encourage your
Associate to keep thinking Consult with other Observers on what works for them to
illustrate certain aspects of Advanced Riding If you don’t know the answer to a question from your Associate,
don’t guess – ask another Observer

Before we start
I wear a flip-front helmet, what is the policy for observing in it?
IAM have thought about this and published a policy document. Essentially, a flip-front helmet attains it’s safety rating in the closed position so must be worn as such when observing. Highway Code – Rule 83 “fastened securely”

Observer Refresher Day 2015
Before we start
Do I have to wear a hi-viz vest?
It is your choice. Some IAM Staff Examiners don’t like them but wear them, others just refuse to wear them. However, if you wear any form of hi-viz clothing, do not assume that other road users will automatically see you any better than not wearing it. Highway Code – Rule 86-87 “visible as possible”

Learning Styles - Neil Fleming's VAK/VARK model
Visual learners have a preference for seeing (think in pictures; visual aids that represent ideas using methods other than words, such as graphs, charts, diagrams, symbols, etc.).
Auditory learners best learn through listening (lectures, discussions, tapes, etc.).
Reading/Writing learners use books, manuals, leaflets or instruction sheets.
Tactile/Kinaesthetic learners prefer to learn via experience—moving, touching, and doing (active exploration of the world; science projects; experiments, etc.).

Observer Refresher Day 2015
Learning Styles
“It is important to understand that these are not learning styles but
rather the method in which the stimuli is taken in. One might
expect that learning music would suit a learner who has some
strong Aural preferences, but music can be very effectively
learned by those who employ read/write, visual, or kinaesthetic
strategies, or a combination of all-four.”

Observer Refresher Day 2015
Group Expectations of Associates
For Associates to be honest about their own ability prior to starting observed runs.
To accept guidance given by Observers with an open mind and seek clarification when required.
To refine techniques and apply points on run report action plan between observed runs.
Lichfield Advanced Motorcyclists Group
http://www.lamg.uk.net
Observer Refresher Day 2015
Associate Expectations
To progress through a clearly defined process of motorcycle control and to improve riding skill to IAM test standard.
To receive fair and balanced critique of riding with clear explanation of exactly what is required to reach IAM standard.
To leave each observed run feeling positive, with a desire to improve riding skill and refine riding technique in preparation for next observed run/IAM test.
Lichfield Advanced Motorcyclists Group
http://www.lamg.uk.net
Observer Refresher Day 2015
Observer Expectations
To be supported by the Observer Co-ordinator Team and National Observers in delivering top quality guidance.
To receive the highest possible standard of training to best deliver continuous improvement of motorcycling to Associates.
To be provided with the necessary resources to best help Associates understand the techniques of Advanced Motorcycling.

Observer Refresher Day 2015
Structured Observing:
Follow a structured process that develops Associate Member’s skills in a logical manner.
Start with simple, core elements and add more as skill improves.
Allow Associate to realise how elements link and discover marked improvement by implementation.
Ensure Associate understands how elements fit into the System of Motorcycle Control – I P S G A.
Example: -
Lichfield Advanced Motorcyclists Group
http://www.lamg.uk.net
Observer Refresher Day 2015
Structured Observing:
Encourage Associate to look as far along the road as possible to anticipate hazards and for speed limit changes.
Concentrate on safety margins, speed limits and positioning – including corners and bends.
Make sure observations are made correctly and appropriately to maintain safety margins and be aware of other road users – particularly rear observations/lifesavers when approaching/negotiating hazards.
Lichfield Advanced Motorcyclists Group
http://www.lamg.uk.net
Observer Refresher Day 2015
Structured Observing:
To increase machine control, explain/demonstrate that the correct gear is selected for approaching/negotiating/leaving hazards.
Explain/demonstrate how correct forward observation, positioning, throttle control and gear selection enable progress to be made in a seemingly effortless manner – swan effect.
Bring all skills together for overtaking and town riding.
Use demo ride(s) as appropriate.
Lichfield Advanced Motorcyclists Group
http://www.lamg.uk.net
Observer Refresher Day 2015
Aim of the Ride:
Demonstrate your understanding of the system (of motorcycle
control) to form a ‘Riding Plan’ and by using smooth acceleration
sense make safe progress with quiet efficiency within the posted
speed limits.

Is my Associate ready for test?
When you think your Associate is approaching test-ready, consider what they need to be demonstrating: -
Is there a ‘Riding Plan’ that allows for all possible outcomes?
Are observations carried out in a timely and appropriate manner?
Are they aware of what is around them and maintaining safety margins?
Does your Associate create/take opportunities to make progress?
Is there safe progress without conflict with other road users?

Observer Refresher Day 2015
Practical Activity – Morning:
Ride as Associate and Observer on your planned route with the 2 stops for in-run briefings – you are not required to give a demo ride but consider telling your ‘Associate’ what you would be demonstrating on that section of road. Give appropriate briefings with disclaimer – use Guidance Session document.
Associate – can you always see your Observer when you need to and are indications given in good time?
Observer – are you able to control direction of your Associate on the route? Is there a section where you need to lead?

Use of Radios to Communicate with Associate:
A radio is not used on test so its’ use for giving general directions on an Observed Run within LAMG is discouraged.
However, use of a radio may be of benefit to clearly explain a particular element of Advanced Motorcycling whilst demonstrating.
Ensure you are familiar with the content of documents produced by IAM on the use of radios before using them.
Any recording from a radio must not be uploaded to open social media sites, placed in the public domain or used for financial gain.

Observer Refresher Day 2015
Cameras and Filming Observed Runs:
Recording an Observed Run by use of a camera can be an extremely useful way of showing how your Associate is riding and gives the opportunity to show how to improve.
You must have the consent of your Associate to record the Observed Run before going out and for any viewing outside your pairing.
Any footage must not be uploaded to open social media sites, placed in the public domain or used for financial gain.

Associate Development:
Allow an Associate Member to take on the skills at their own pace – some will be quicker than others to understand and implement advanced techniques.
Ensure that all guidance is understood and they have some opportunity to use and practice what they have been told.
Make a decision on whether an Associate Member has the skills and awareness to join in an MMR – tick the box on the Run Report – and that they will benefit from the experience.

Observer Refresher Day 2015
Associate Development:
Explain clearly what is good about their riding as well as what needs to be worked on – compliment sandwich.
Give notice of what is likely to be included in the next Observed Run and encourage them to look at the section in HTBABR and relevant sections of the Highway Code.

Growing the Group
As the first contact with Associate Members, Observers are best placed to promote the IAM and LAMG, it’s social activities and further involvement in motorcycle safety.
Try to use every opportunity to explain the benefits of continued membership of LAMG and the various activities we take part in so that Associate Members can be included.
At a suitable time, explain the structure of the Group and who does what to make everything possible.

Observer Refresher Day 2015
Growing the Group
All the positions within LAMG are flexible and fluid – anyone holding a given position will always welcome assistance … and sometimes replacement.
If it comes to light that an Associate Member has a skill or works in a profession that may benefit the Group and it’s members, please encourage them to see if they are able to help.
Enquire if the Associate Member has other interests that may involve members of the Group socially.

Life and opportunities beyond IAM test
Get involved in social activities organised by the Group – help organise social activities and ride-outs/MMRs.
Join the committee, or one of the sub-committees, to help with running the Group – further growth is predicted this year.
Consider further development by taking IAM Masters.
Opportunities to become a Local Observer may become available as the number of Associate Members increases through the summer.
