MA Dept. of Elementary and Secondary Education Licensure Definitions

“Initial” License is the stage of license you will receive upon completing your Teacher Education Program and passing the MTEL

Grade Level refers to Grades 5-8 and 8-12

SEI: Sheltered English Endorsement: You will get this by taking module- T-210Z1 Dimensions of Diversity: English Language Learners

Validity of License- Initial licenses are valid for 5 years of employment in MA, renewable once.- Professional licenses are valid for 5 years and renewed through

the Recertification process every 5 years.

1. Complete All Teacher Ed Coursework and Fieldwork requirements

• Communication & Literacy as well as many subjects which are computer-based

testing

Advancing Your Teaching License from Initial to Professional

• Possession of an Initial Teaching license

• Completion of three full years of employment as a Massachusetts Teacher (which includes a 1-year Induction Program handled by your employer)

Recertification

• When is it applicable?- The end of the 5th year of having a Professional license

• What do you have to do to renew your license?

- Obtain 150 PDPs (professional development units)- See DESE website with most current resources and communicate with your

supervisor

- Submit application, Not documents

• SPECIAL MENTION:- Remember, take Math MTEL (09) to obtain MS and HS Math licenses

Creating Your Profile in DESE Database

• Steps:

1. Key in www.doe.mass.edu/educators/e_license.html

2. Click “Online Tools/ELAR”

3. Click “Create ELAR Profile”

4. Key in your data and submit - Watch for accuracy and remember auto generated username and password you create!

• Email [email protected] stating “Profile Submitted to DESE.” (Do this immediately after you submit your Profile.)
