MARKET REVIEW
Market Review
Ÿ Monthly returns for CNX NIFTY and BSE SENSEX dipped in June as compared to May. Geopolitical tension between the US and Iran, progress of US-China trade talks, retaliatory tariff from India on US goods and slow progress of monsoon are some of the factors that weighed on sentiment.
Ÿ Despite RBI cutting repo rate by 25 bps to 5.75%, no specific measures had been announced that would provide immediate relief to NBFC sector.
Ÿ Fall in prices of food articles, fuel and power items led to a dip in WPI inflation to 2.45% from 3.07% in April. Growth in IIP picked up to 3.4% in April aided by a favorable base effect.
Ÿ At broad, the main thrust to IIP growth came from electricity and mining sector. May CPI inflation inched marginally to 3.05% as against an upward revised print of 2.99% in April.
Sector-wise indices – Mid Cap, Auto and Oil and Gas suffered negative returns of -1.9%, -2.9% and -5.9% respectively, whereas Consumer durables and Power continued to give a reasonable monthly return of 5.8% and 4.2%.
Capital flows:
FIIs were net sellers in the equity to the tune of ₹ 127 crores
(US$18mn) in June 2019. Cumulatively, FIIs bought equity worth
₹ 49,341 crores (US$ 7,310mn) in last twelve months i.e. from July'18-
June'19 and DII bought equity worth ₹ 59,016 crores (US$8,187mn) for
the same period. (As on 30th June 2019, Source: SEBI) (June 2019
Avg. 1 USD = INR 69.44).
Outlook
Ÿ South-west monsoon (43% below normal levels and covering only
a small portion of land mass so far) had a sluggish start to the sowing of
kharif crops leading to a contraction of 7.3% compared to normal levels
and 9.5% compared to 2018 levels. Among the crops, pulses (-59%)
and oil seeds (42%) reported maximum decline which has led to an
increase in prices (Tur, urad and moong prices up 3.5%).
Ÿ If monsoon were to progress well in July, overall sowing can pick up
quickly. The average MSP increased by ~3.8% indicating a return to
the usual MSP increase trend and lower food subsidy allocation vs
current allocation.
Ÿ The US-China trade war continues. Furthermore, the OPEC's
decision to extend production cuts until Mar-20 will lead to increase in
oil prices which in turn will have an influence on the Indian economy.
Ÿ On the domestic economy, GST collections for Jun-19 were below
the required rate (pre-budget) of Rs1.15tn partly due to the cuts in tax
rates, following the GST Council's decision to moderate rates. The
upcoming FY20 Union Budget is likely to focus on
Ÿ (i) Rural economy to boost consumption stimulus and rural

infrastructure,
Ÿ (ii) Reviving investments in the private sector and
Ÿ (iii) Expansion of social and country security. We believe the
budget will provide more visibility on the government's economic
agenda. The government clearly understands the importance of
high economic growth and job creation. Implementation of the same
is the issue.
Ÿ Having said this, we do not expect the rural demand slowdown to
reverse immediately given continued contraction in farmers'
profitability led by low prices as well as muted global food prices.
Ÿ We also expect the fiscal overhang and liquidity challenges to
continue in the near term.
Ÿ All the above, coupled with reasonably high valuations (despite the
correction), make us stay cautious on the market. We preferred a
bottom-up approach and pick all-weather stocks, with visibility of
strong earnings growth.
Market Review
Ÿ The month of June started on a positive note with expectations of 25-50 bps rate cut by MPC and there was a unanimous decision to cut benchmark rate by 25 bps during the June 19 meet.
Ÿ The decision was guided by GDP growth which slumped to a 5 year low of 5.8% during Q4FY19, weak domestic and global growth and contained inflation trajectory, especially sharp fall in core inflation. There was also a stance change from accommodative to neutral.
Ÿ MPC now expects H1FY20 CPI inflation at 3-3.1% and H2FY20 inflation at 3.4-3.7% with risks broadly balanced. The latest CPI numbers for the month of May stood at 3.05% compared to 2.99% during April 19.
Ÿ The numbers were on the higher side, led by jump in food prices. Food Prices rose on the back of dwindling supplies during summers, delayed onset of monsoons and dry weather conditions.
Ÿ Federal Reserve in its June meeting explicitly indicated that it is poised to move to an accommodative stance than what we had initially expected.
Ÿ The guidance that it provided on the policy rate front was altered and the dot plot showed a greater consensus of moving towards accommodation.
Ÿ FED also raised concerns about growth outlook and its policy statement laid great emphasis on increasing disinflationary pressures in the economy. It has given a total 50 bps rate cut call in this year.
Outlook
Ÿ Going ahead we remain cautious of monsoon distribution, abrupt
reversal of vegetable prices, consolidated fiscal position, financial
market volatility, eroding consumption demand and geopolitical
tensions as these factors could have serious impact on growth and
inflation forecast.
Ÿ However there should be a major thrust by the government in its
upcoming budget to push growth and RBI would follow suit and focus
more on credit transmission and growth.

Holdings: The holdings or the portfolio is a mutual fund’s latest or updated report statement of investments/securities. These are usually displayed in terms of percentage to net assets or the rupee value or both. The objective is to give investors an idea of where their money is being invested by the fund manager.
Minimum Additional Amount: This is the minimum investment amount for an existing investor in a mutual fund scheme.
Macaulay Duration: Macaulay Duration is the weighted average term to maturity of the cash flows from a bond. The weight of each cash flow is determined by dividing the present value of the cash flow by the price.
Nature of Scheme: The investment objective and underlying investments determine the nature of the mutual fund scheme. For instance, a mutual fund that aims at generating capital appreciation by investing in stock markets is an equity fund or growth fund. Likewise, a mutual fund that aims at capital preservation by investing in debt markets is a debt fund or income fund. Each of these categories may have subcategories.
NAV: The NAV or the net asset value is the total asset value per unit of the mutual fund after deducting all related and permissible expenses. The NAV is calculated at the end of every business day. It is the value at which the investor enters or exits the mutual fund.
Portfolio turnover ratio: Portfolio turnover is a measure of how frequently assets within a fund are bought and sold by the managers. This ratio measures the fund's trading activity, which is computed by taking the lesser of purchases or sales and dividing by average monthly net assets.
Portfolio Yield: Disclosure only required for Debt Funds.
Rating Profile: Mutual funds invest in securities after evaluating their creditworthiness as disclosed by the ratings. A depiction of the mutual fund in various investments based on their ratings becomes the rating profile of the fund. Typically, this is a feature of debt funds.
Risk Free Returns: MIBOR rate for 1 day. To be sourced from FIMMDA (http://www.fimmda.org) for last day of the month.
Sector allocation: Sector allocation may be defined as an allocation of funds in a certain percentage of the portfolio in different sectors of the economy.
Sharpe Ratio: The Sharpe Ratio, names after its founder, the Nobel Laureate William Sharpe, is a measure of risk-adjusted returns. It is calculated using standard deviation and excess return to determine reward per unit of risk.
SIP: SIP or systematic investment plan works on the principle of making periodic investments of a fixed sum. Its works similar to a recurring bank deposit. For instance, an investor may opt for an SIP that the invests Rs 500 every 15 of the month in an equity fund for a period of three years.
SIP Return: The SIP return calculation should be based on Rs. 10,000 invested every month. Returns would be 1 year, 3 year, 5 year, 7 year etc.
Standard Deviation: Standard deviation is a statistical measure of the range of an investment’s performance. When a mutual fund has a high standard deviation, its means its range of performance is wide, implying greater volatility.
Tracking error: Tracking error is the difference between a portfolio's returns and the benchmark or index it was meant to mimic or beat. Tracking error is sometimes called active risk.
Yield to Maturity: The Yield to Maturity or the YTM is the rate of return anticipated on a bond if held until maturity. YTM is expressed as an annual rate. The YTM factors in the bond’s current market price, par value, coupon interest rate and time to maturity.
