LIC Arts Open made possible thanks to our Sponsors:
Welcome to the LIC Arts Open 2013! It has been another wild ride putting together the brochure (it always is, some-thing to do with publishing!) but we hope you will agree that it is a little more legible and easier to navigate!
I am so excited by some of the incredible events, exhibitions and art that are on display this year. We have some great new contributors; in particular I am pleased to welcome one of NYC’s essential art resources, Material for 7KH$UWVDVZHOODV6WXGLRPXOWLSOHDUWLVWVVWXGLRVWKHLQWHUQDWLRQDOO\UHQRZQHG3RLQW]JUDIÀWLPXVHXP7KHSpace, No Longer Empty. We are happy to welcome back galleries like The Jeffrey Leder Gallery, Diego Salazar Gallery and studios like Mittman, Wills, Reis and many others. Beside the great exhibitions and events one of the biggest parts of the festival is the Open Studios which take place on Saturday and Sunday from noon – 6pm. Come and visit some of LIC’s incredible artists in their studios where much of the art is on sale, or just browse and prepare to be amazed by the incredible amount of skill and talent in LIC. There are many highlights but in par-ticular this years regular contributor, seminal musician Pat Irwin, presents a unique concert featuring music from the HBO show Bored To Death, sponsored by Modern Spaces. Large-scale art shows are in signature buildings all over the neighborhood but don’t miss The Gotham Center exhibition or The Clocktower exhibition in Queens Plaza. More intimate but equally fascinating, exhibitions and shows can also be found at Ten10 Studios, The Secret 7KHDWUH*DOOHU\0DQGXFDWLV5XVWLFD0RGHUQ6SDFHVRIÀFHVDQGDW.U\SWRQ1HRQVWXGLR7KLVLVDOVRWKHVHFRQGyear of our “10x10” Exhibition and Fundraiser. which features a large number of artists who will create special 10” x 10” pieces which will be available to purchase.
Other amazing offerings include the Queens New Music Festival at The Secret Theatre. You can also experience a live radio show recording “In The Room”, featuring Joel Murray (God Bless America/Monsters Inc) and our friends at The Queen World Film Fest present a ‘best of’ selection. We once again extend our gratitude to our major partner The Court Square Diner, and to the LIC Partnership and Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer for their incredible support. We really couldn’t present the festival without them.
Lastly, I want to thank Development Directors and colleagues Jeffrey Leder and Juvenal Reis, Garden Party host Orestes Gonzalez and my team, especially Assistant Director Matt Greco, Lead Designer Matt Stefani, curators .DUHQ'LPLWDQG-HDQ0DULH*X\DX[DVZHOODV*LDQQD&HUERQH7HROL0RVWRIDOO,ZDQWWRJLYHVLQFHUHWKDQNVWRthe artists and community of LIC.
LIC has become quite the arts destination and that is in no small way due to the inspirational artists that live and work in NYC’s coolest corner.

April 5, 2013 Dear Friends, Congratulations on the 3rd annual Long Island City Arts Open and to all of the volunteers who make this week long event such a consistently wonderful event. As a co-sponsor and supporter of the LIC Arts Open this year, I am truly excited to be a part of this event, celebrating this exceptionally talented artistic community. It is a great honor and privilege to serve the burgeoning community of artists in Long Island City that has helped to develop this area into a destination for tourists and local residents who are seeking the true New York City artistic experience. Entering its third consecutive celebration, the Long Island City Arts Open offers an informative introduction into the workspaces that produce the beautiful and thought-provoking work that comes out of our neighborhoods. To all those who have come to Western Queens for this fantastic event, I extend a warm and heartfelt welcome. This area is home to one of the largest collections of gallery and studio space in the City, and I am proud to support this event, which provides us with a chance to celebrate the artists who use this space as well as the work they produce. This event has proven to be a wonderful addition to the growing calendar of events in our neighborhood, and I look forward to supporting the Long Island City Arts Open for many years to come. A special congratulations to Richard Mazda and all of the volunteers who make this celebration what it is! Sincerely,

BLUE STREAK WINES & SPIRITSIS THE BEST WINE STORE IN LONG ISLAND CITY
The idea for the wine store came on a trip to Spain, in a small, unnamed winery with
delicious house wine. From there picking Long Island City was the most logical choice
and the rest is history. The fun for us is when our customers come to the store and ask us for a recommendation. From there we go around the world and back to make
sure each person gets the perfect wine. 4720 Center Blvd. Long Island City, NY

GUILIN, I WILL BE FOREVER GRATEFULPaintings by Michelle O’Connell
May 15th – June 14th // Reception May 17th 6-8pmI went to China with the intention of leav-ing behind the things I knew, and gaining knowledge of a world I knew nothing about. Over the four years I spent there, I not only experienced Chinese culture, but I experi-enced a complete self-transformation. This metamorphosis cannot only be seen in myself as a person, but also in my paintings. I am no longer trying to ease my pain through paint, as in my pre-China works, but rather painting my gratitude for the place that helped to heal my suffering. www.michelleoco.comModern Spaces47-42 Vernon Blvdwww.modernspacesnyc.com718-784-1110Hours: Mon-Fri: 10-5pm Sat-Sun: 12-5pm

The walls around me are adorned with antique art frames, all intricately chiseled and shin-ing in gold leaf. I fear one heavy breath from my urban lungs will be the corrosive end for this one-winged cherub I’m closely examining. ́ 7KDWRQHLVIURPWKHÀIWHHQWKcentury,” says Diego Salazar, “it is one of my favorites.” Diego is the man who restored this tiny frame and the several hundred other antique frames hanging in the Diego Salazar Art Gallery. He is a modest man – “Just make me look handsome,” he jokes. He is clearly at ease amongst his frames, Ya-Da-Da-Da’ing the chorus of “Piano Man” as he wields his nail gun and measuring tape. But his easy going nature belies the ambition
and hard work it took for him to get where he is today. “When I was 17 and a half I came from Columbia. I had two dollars in my pocket. I arrived on a Sunday, and the next day I started working in frames, by chance. My friend had a job at a place, and I started working there. It became my passion. I became independent after 5 years. When I was 22 I opened P\ÀUVWVKRSµ Not surprisingly, the early years were a struggle. “I used to carry humongous boxes down Madison Avenue in the sum-mertime, with the tie, with the jacket. I walked for 50 blocks, and nobody bought anything from me,” he recalls with a smile. Incremental success and bigger spaces came. At 21-25 44th Ave, his current home, he entered
into a symbiotic relationship with the artists of his adopted neighborhood. Diego would be WKHÀUVWWRDGPLWWKDWKHZDVsomewhat lacking in business acumen in the early years, but he developed a self-sustaining busi-ness model that has helped to make Long Island City the place for the arts that it is today.́ ,WKLQN,ZDVWKHÀUVWRQHZKRstarted dividing the building to make art studios. Started that about 23, 24 years ago, in this building, and then 3 or 4 build-ings started doing the same thing. So I was kind of the pioneer!” Over the forty-plus years he’s worked in LIC, it never occurred to him to cash in on his property. ,QIDFWKHKDVJUDGXDOO\VLPSOLÀHGhis business so he can focus solely on antique restoration, his true passion.

Artists have been quietly moving to Long Island City for decades, attracted to its expansive former industrial spaces, and (relatively) cheap rents. Until recently, though, one thing artists didn’t settle here for was the innovative cuisine.
There are some great institu-tions in LIC: Manducatis has been dishing up home-
cooked Italian-American food from its brick store-front on Jackson Ave since 1977, and over on Vernon Blvd, Junior’s has been sling-LQJWHUULÀFSL]]DDQGVWHDNVfor over eighty years. What we didn’t have, for many years, were restaurants for the culinary adventurers.
In the summer of 2009, some waves were made when famed mixologists Sasha Petraske and Richard Boc-FDWRRSHQHGWKH'XWFK.LOOVBar on Jackson Ave, serving exquisite vintage cocktails in a meticulously old-school space. But the tide really turned in August of 2010 when Quebecois chef Hugue
Dufour and his wife, Queens native Sarah Obraitis, transformed a diner on 49th Ave into the “it” res-taurant of the year. M. Wells Diner one year put LIC on the culinary map. Suddenly foodies were hopping on the 7 train in droves to partake of Dufour’s oysters with coffee sabayon and bone marrow with escargot.
Hugue Dufour is just one of the latest artists drawn to our neighborhood. He works with taste, bringing together thought-provoking FRPELQDWLRQVRIÁDYRUVDQGtextures, the way his LIC compatriots work with paint, ÀOPRUSHUIRUPHUVRQDstage. (Foie gras and oats, for example. Oysters Bolog-nese.) He is doing exactly what so many others in our community are doing – dar-ing to create something new. Cultural tent-pole P.S. 1 evi-dently agrees; they’ve given Dufour and Obraitis free reign over their café space, and their newest venture, M. Wells Dinette, is thriving.
Nowadays, we have a surge of artists to feed the artists. Jeff Blath has opened Alobar (46-42 Vernon Blvd), sharing his love of nose-to-tail eating. Nick Guitart has handcrafted the interior of his new restaurant Open Door (10-09 50th Ave), including the massive, yet delicate, 3-D mural of our iconic Pepsi-Cola sign – viewed, as we see it, from be-
hind. His food evokes the ca-maraderie LICers enjoy with snappy small bites available at a long and comfortable bar. A new set of culinary creators is settling in.
For those of us who have been around awhile, it can EHGLIÀFXOWWRUHFRQFLOHZLWKthe changes coming to our beloved neighborhood, but some are welcome. The Long Island City that, for so long, attracted painters and sculptors is now attracting culinary innovators – if you feel like taking the pulse of a place, what could be a more encouraging sign?
