Finding Newspapers through the Library
![Page 14: Library resources comp2903_2016](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051404/587529651a28ab3f098b605b/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Finding Scholarly ArticlesBefore you get started:
• Think of a topic, then formulate a research question – what do you want to find out?
• Isolate your research question into 2 or 3 concepts
• List words and terms to describe these concepts
![Page 15: Library resources comp2903_2016](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051404/587529651a28ab3f098b605b/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Finding Scholarly ArticlesExample:
I want to find out more about how elderly people use social media to combat isolation or its impact on loneliness and mental health
Question:
Does social media alleviate feelings of isolation or loneliness in the elderly?
![Page 16: Library resources comp2903_2016](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051404/587529651a28ab3f098b605b/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Bad search: Does social media use alleviate feelings of isolation or loneliness in the elderly?
Better search: Does social media use alleviate feelings of loneliness in the elderly?
![Page 17: Library resources comp2903_2016](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051404/587529651a28ab3f098b605b/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)

Using Boolean when you search
• OR – using OR in a database allows you to use more than one term or phrase to describe one concept or idea.
• Example: senior OR elderly
![Page 19: Library resources comp2903_2016](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051404/587529651a28ab3f098b605b/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Using Boolean when you search
• AND – allows you to combine two concepts together to search for them simultaneously.
• Example: senior AND twitter
![Page 20: Library resources comp2903_2016](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051404/587529651a28ab3f098b605b/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Even better search:
(elderly OR "senior citizen" OR retiree OR pensioner OR "old age") AND ("social media" OR twitter OR facebook OR instragram OR internet OR online) AND ("mental health" OR loneliness OR relationships OR depression OR anxiety OR isolation).
![Page 21: Library resources comp2903_2016](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051404/587529651a28ab3f098b605b/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)

articles from thousands of journals – what if you’re looking for just one?
