How do I determine the reading level of a text?
Why is it important to level texts? What resources are available?
“When a text is too difficult for the child the process breaks down and the child does not develop inner control of effective actions for processing texts. When the text poses enough challenge, but not too much, the child has opportunities with effective, explicit teaching to build his network of effective problem solving actions…Teaching must begin with where the child is able to engage with some success, so that there is a point of contact, thereby engaging the child's development of a self-extending system for processing texts” (Fountas & Pinnell).
How do I determine the reading level of a text?
1. Copy at least 1 page of a text from any resource that you have given to students
2. Paste the text into a readability website
3. Note the Flesch–Kincaid score and compare to the Lexile Conversion Chart
Note: You can also test the readability of websites
