Why searching for information and research literature analysis are necessary?
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.
Isaac Newton, Letter to Robert Hooke, February 5, 1675
• Not to repeat what has already been
done
• Published research results are a starting
point of new ideas and research 3

Predatory or highjacked journals
Predatory Journals present themselves as ranking higher than they are in fact; they seek profit.
Hijacked Journals have stolen the identity of other journals. Their aim is also profit.
http://scholarlyoa.com/other-pages/hijacked-journals/
Criteria for identifying predatory journals (e.g., http://www.researchjournali.com/):
• Imitation of real publishers’ behaviour. • Very quick process of review. • Only electronic contacts provided but not the publisher’s
address. • Grammar mistakes on the website text. • Editorial boards consist of scholars who have not given
consent to be editorial board members. • Indexing strange directories and databases

Copyright and plagiarism
Plagiarism is using another author’s idea, opinion,
theory as your own or paraphrasing without a
proper acknowledgement of the source.
Prevention:
• Using special programmes to check for plagiarism: EPAS, CrossCheck
• Storing research publications on open access repositories that check for plagiarism automatically.
NB: incorrectly cited references may be considered plagiarism.
“Submission of an article implies that the work described has not been published previously (except in the form of an abstract or as part of a published lecture or academic thesis or as an electronic preprint, see http://www.elsevier.com/postingpolicy), ... To verify originality, your article may be checked by the originality detection service CrossCheckhttp://www.elsevier.com/editors/plagdetect.“
Self-citation and self-reference
“The available literature on self-plagiarism is concerned
with four major problems: The publication of what is
essentially the same paper in more than one journal,
but without any indication that the paper has been
published elsewhere (i.e., redundant and duplicate
publication), the partitioning of a large study which
should have been reported in a single paper into
smaller published studies (i.e., salami-slicing), copyright
infringement, and the practice of text recycling.”
