Dear Friends,

Cambridge is a city of learners. And in this city of people who aspire to create and maintain an exceptional quality of life for all residents, a great public library—like ours—is essential.

But what makes a good library great? I would argue that the investment of private philanthropy makes all the difference. For as long as libraries have existed in this country, the generosity of people and private institutions has always helped make that leap.

The Cambridge Public Library Foundation serves as the vehicle for philanthropic investment in this wonderful institution, and we are steadfast in our commitment to the Library’s continued innovation, dedication to democracy and equality, and ability to respond to emerging community needs. The Library is always evolving to meet the needs of Cambridge residents, better protect people’s rights, and encourage personal growth for everyone who walks through the doors. We are so proud to aid these efforts.

In the past year, and with your support, the Cambridge Public Library Foundation has invested almost $100,000 in ongoing library programs for families, immigrants, and seniors; innovation in the Library’s STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) spaces; and strategic planning that will benefit our community for generations to come (see more on page 3).

I hope these pages inspire you. Thank you for choosing to invest in Cambridge’s greatest democratic institution: the Cambridge Public Library.

Sincerely,

Shippen L. Page President, Library Foundation Board of Directors

$2,000 MINDFULNESS PROGRAMMINGIn collaboration with the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine at UMASS Medical, the Library hosted an Introduction to Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program. This lecture examined the science, benefits and practice of mindfulness, as well as tools and strategies for responding effectively to stressors in everyday life.

$11,500 CHILDREN’S ROOM MURAL A large-scale mural inspired by the work of Cambridge resident, and children’s book author and illustrator Ed Emberley, was painted in the Children’s Room in January. The mural was created by local artist Caleb Neelon, who has authored or collaborated on more than two dozen books, and whose art can be seen around the world.

YOUR FOUNDATION GIFTS AT WORK!$6,894CURIOUS GEORGE LECTUREThis year’s 3rd annual Margaret & H.A. Rey Curious George Lecture Series featured acclaimed graphic novelist Kazu Kibuishi. Mr. Kibuishi, a New York Times bestselling author, kept an audience of 200+ children and adults captivated with his personal story and photographs, and answered questions while demonstrating a “digital painting” technique.

$10,000SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ARTS AND MATH PROGRAMMINGThrough a partnership with local organization Innovators for Purpose, the Library has provided intensive Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) programming for youth, ages 11-16 in Cambridge. Working in the Library space, students created robots that help differently abled people, designed and built a permanent wayfinding art installation in Kendall Square, and are currently developing an Augmented Reality app that will help publicize the Library’s new Hive makerspace.

$36,803 STRATEGIC PLANNINGThe Library has undergone a very thorough strategic planning process, led by a professional consultant, over the last year. The process has included months of community input through surveys, social media, and community forums as well as robust staff involvement, and concept development. The new strategic plan will guide the Library’s service to the community over the next three to five years.

$1,850 MUSIC IN THE PARK SERIESA series of three family-friendly musical concerts were held on the Library lawn, featuring a Senegalese dance/pop music group, an all-women salsa band, and a jazz ensemble.

$5,876 PROGRAMMING FOR SENIORSThe Creative Aging program, for adults 55+, is a series of intensive eight-week courses that center on the arts. Taught by certified artists and instructors, the goal is to offer participants an opportunity to learn new skills and forge connections with other community members. This year’s courses included Poetry, Drawing and Storytelling.

$13,742 LIBRARY MATERIALSThe Library continues to invest in its collections at a high rate. Some materials, including new Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) kits and some foreign language editions either are outside the scope of the budget or are difficult to procure through traditional methods. The Foundation is proud to support the Library by contributing funds for its collections.

$500 ARCHIVESThe Cambridge Room, the Library’s archive, hired a consultant who digitized, described and made available an additional 200 photographs from the local documentary photographer Olive Pierce. The consultant also processed the personal papers of Nancy Venable Raine, a poet-in-residence at the Cambridge Arts Council when it was founded in the late 1970s.

$9,877 LIBRARY DIRECTOR’S DISCRETIONARY FUNDThese funds cover the costs of small projects and Library needs that present themselves throughout the year.
