Dear Friends,

For my children, one of each week’s high points is their chance to choose and check out books from the Library. While our children don’t know it yet, we’re lucky that the Hennepin County Library is justifiably recognized as one of the best in the country. We are fortunate to have this invaluable resource in our community, bringing joy, wonder and purpose to thousands of people daily. We are proud to be able to support such a valued and necessary public institution.

For the Library Foundation, 2009 was a year of solidifying the organization in a tough economic climate. Late in 2008, the Foundation merged with The Friends of the Minneapolis Public Library to form one, united organization. Settling into our new merged “skin” took some time and work, but the Foundation has emerged stronger and more vital than ever. Throughout, our focus remained on making our great Library even better. With your help, we provided more than $2 million in support to our Library and offered many other support services and programs on the Library’s behalf.

The donations from our members and donors helped purchase thousands of new books, supported homework and job centers, services for new immigrants and seniors, reading programs for boys and teens, provided funds for the local libraries, and much more. We believe you will be amazed at the scope and impact of our work.

Our future is bright. While the Library faces many challenges ahead, the Foundation is focused on continuing to ensure our Library is strong and vibrant. We ended 2009 by launching a strategic planning effort to guide

us in increasing our support of the Library in coming years. We also began providing coordination of the local Library Friends groups throughout the County—essential partners in providing assistance to the Library at the neighborhood level, as well as system-wide. Strong partnerships, strategic leadership, and engaged community members are elements that will keep our Library dynamic and growing.

Our work in support of the Library is impossible without the help of numerous individuals and organizations. I offer a big thank you to our current and former board for their ongoing commitment to the Library. I especially would like to thank our previous Co-Presidents, Pam Gagnon and Glenn Miller, for their skillful, sensitive, and caring leadership these past two years. The Library Foundation would not be the solid organization it is today without Pam and Glenn’s work. Additionally, thank you to the County Commissioners and Library Board members, and our Library Director, Lois Langer Thompson, and the entire Library staff, for offering such an important service throughout the County. Thank you as well to all of our staff, and wonderful volunteers, who make the Foundation work day-to-day.

Most importantly, thank you—our donors, supporters, members and sponsors—for your generosity on behalf of the Library. The Foundation is very fortunate to count nearly 5,000 members and contributors in our family of supporters, including major foundations and corporations, community businesses and organizations, local library Friends groups, avid Pen Pals attendees, bookstore shoppers, and thousands of individuals who love our Library. The activities described in this report are not possible without your generous help and assistance. Once again, thank you.

I look forward to your continued support of the Library Foundation and the Hennepin County Library.

Celebrating a Record-Breaking Year at the Library

Page 7: Library Foundation 2009 Annual Report

2009 Annual Report

Hennepin County Library customers checked out more than 16.6 million items in 2009 —one of the highest public library circulation rates in the nation. There were more than 15.5 million visits to the website and more than 5.6 million in-person visits to Hennepin County’s 41 libraries. More than 236,000 adults, teens, and children attended library programs last year.

In 2009, Hennepin County Library highlights included:

Streamlining the Library Catalog andTechnology. The Library consolidated its computer network and merged the Minneapolis and Hennepin County library catalogs into one streamlined system. The single catalog now contains more than 5 million books, CDs, DVDs, and other items—the 12th largest public library collection in the U.S. Overall use increased dramatically as customers could access the wealth of material across the system after the consolidation.

IncreasingHours. At the close of 2009, the County Commissioners announced that the Minneapolis Central Library would open on Mondays thanks to the ballpark stadium sales tax. For the first time since 1971 our downtown library is open 7 days a week. It was announced that the ballpark sales tax would also fund additional hours at the new Plymouth and Maple Grove libraries in the coming year.

ReinvigoratingFacilities. Both Nokomis and North-east libraries hosted renovation kick-off celebrations and closed their doors temporarily to perform significant capital improvements. Plymouth and Maple Grove libraries put the final touches on their new buildings opening in 2010. Webber Park, Brooklyn Park, Excelsior and Walker libraries began the planning process for building projects scheduled for comple-tion in the near future.

WinningNationalRecognition. In 2009, a national library review ranked our system fourth in the nation and the Library Journal gave the Hennepin County system a 5 star rat-ing. The Library was recognized for “playing an invaluable role in the economic recovery” with an Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties. Additionally, the Minneapolis Central Library building was awarded an American Institute of Architects 2009 AIA/ALA Library Building Award.

SecuringNewLeadershipandPlanningfortheFuture. After a nationwide search for a new director, former Deputy Director Lois Langer Thompson was named the Director of Hennepin County Library in February. Thompson has more than 20 years experience at the Library. In 2009, the Library Board launched a strategic planning process and approved a new system-wide mission statement: to nourish minds, transform lives and build community together.

StrengtheningGreenPartnerships. Green part-nerships continued to be a prominent part of the landscape at Hennepin County Library. The Library, Hennepin County Environmental Services, and Hennepin County Property Services collaborated on three “Cool County Green Expos.” The Library also partnered with Xcel Energy to offer the very popular Power Check energy meters for check-out. Environmental features are among many design highlights of the new Plymouth and Maple Grove libraries.

Providing Essential Funding for the Library

The Foundation provided $2,037,000 in direct support for cultural programs, Library initiatives, collections, capital improvements, and technology. Here is a selection of some of the key program areas the Foundation is honored to support.

Collections.Private support for collections ensures that when library doors are open, the shelves are stocked with current materials responsive to the area the Library serves. To ensure the excellence of our collection, the Foundation, together with our community Library Friends groups, granted a quarter of a million dollars for the purchase of new books and other learning materials for children, teens, and new immigrants, with books in Spanish, Hmong, and Somali as well as English. Special thanks to the following Friends groups for contributing to the Collections Initiative: Champlin, Edina, Golden Valley, Hopkins, Maple Grove, Minnetonka, Oxboro, Penn Lake, Plymouth, Rockford Road, St. Anthony, St. Louis Park, Wayzata, and Westonka.

HomeworkHub.The Homework Hub program offers one-on-one and small group tutoring for kindergarten through grade 12 students, as well as innovative out-of-school programs. In 2009 tutors at 13 libraries provided an estimated 14,000 individualized tutorials for 2,800 students. The program primarily serves new immigrants; 69 percent of participating students come from households where English is not the first language. Support for Homework Hub was provided by the Carolyn Foundation, Epiphany Legacy Fund, G & K Services, Phyllis S. Poehler/ Walter E. Stremel Charitable Trust, Elizabeth C. Quinlan Foundation, Qwest, and Xcel Energy.

InvestorEducationforRetirement. With a major grant from the Investor Protection Trust, the Library partnered with the Minnesota Department of Commerce and the Financial Planners Association of Minnesota, to present “How Can I Afford Retirement? Investor Education at Hennepin County Library” at the Minneapolis Central and Ridgedale libraries. The four-part series provided access to non-commercial, impartial and objective investment education to equip investors ages 45 to 65 with knowledge and skills to make informed investment decisions for retirement. Over 300 individuals attended the fall programs. Twin Cities Public Television recorded the Central Library sessions for broadcast on the Minnesota Channel in April 2010. The series will be repeated at the Southdale and Brookdale libraries in 2010.

Teens@HCL:Learning,LiteracyandLeadership. The Hennepin County Library has created a series of programs that have transformed libraries into positive spaces for youth development where, no matter their background, youth are supported in developing learning skills and participating in meaningful leadership opportunities. These programs, such as the Teen Tech Squad, Guys Read Book Clubs, Game On!, Hennepin Teens Read, History Day Hullabaloo, and much more, are open to all youth and serve over 10,000 teens annually. Support for these programs was provided by Anime Twin Cities, Best Buy Children’s Foundation, Ann and Jack Cole Children’s Fund, the McKnight Foundation, and the S.F. Perkins Fund of the Minneapolis Foundation.

SummerReadingProgram. Libraries have a long tradition of providing opportunities for informal learning grounded in literacy. While they have historically focused on encouraging children to read during the summer, the ability to articulate and solve problems, to generate original ideas, and to work collaboratively is of growing importance. The Hennepin County Library offers hundreds of activities and youth clubs to engage thousands of kids over the summer focusing on literature, technology, arts, science and exploration. The Foundation thanks Target and the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council for their support of these programs.

CorrectionsOutreachPrograms. The Library has extended its services to incarcerated men and women at the Hennepin County’s corrections and detention facilities and juvenile offenders through a series of collaborative programs. Participants are offered employment re-entry resources, technology classes, small business training, literacy programs, community service opportunities, and full access to Library collections. The programs are designed to support the participant and improve the quality of life for their families and dependents.

ImmigrantResourcePrograms. Library staff and resources help underserved immigrant populations succeed in Minnesota through programs with components to accommodate all ages and backgrounds. The goal of these programs is to build successful immigrant families through integration into the community. Connections are built through employment, education, citizenship, language acquisition, housing, and health care. Over 8,000 people are reached annually through HCL’s bi-lingual liaisons, on-demand assistance, the Franklin Learning Center, Conversation Circles, World Language Storytimes, and more. Funding for immigrant resources is made possible in part by the generous support of the Comcast Foundation, Fredrikson & Byron P.A., and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.

PenPalsSeries. The Pen Pals Author Lecture Series is the longest-running author series in the Twin Cities. In 2009, the Library Foundation of Hennepin County was proud to present literary all-stars Tony Kushner, Tim O’Brien, Richard Russo, Erik Larson, and Azar Nafisi. Our venue at the Hopkins Center for the Arts offers great sound and sight lines for the entire house, as well as nearby restaurants and convenient parking.

In addition to bringing today’s most prominent authors, poets, and playwrights to readers in Minnesota, Pen Pals is an important source of support for our organization. In 2009, Pen Pals raised over $165,000 from ticket sales and sponsorships to support the Library Foundation and the Hennepin County Library.

Pen Pals could not take place without the generous assistance of many organizations, individuals, and attendees. We would especially like to thank our series sponsor, Comcast, as well as Mpls.St.Paul Magazine, our media partner, and Gabriel deGrood Bendt, who donated promotional design services. Thanks also to our audience for supporting high-quality literary programming in Minnesota.

MinervaCircle. The Minerva Circle is a society of the Foundation’s strongest supporters who give $1,000 or more annually to support the Library. A statue of Minerva has welcomed patrons to the Central Library since it opened in 1889. Minerva is the ancient Roman goddess of wisdom, learning, and the arts. She is also the protector of libraries. The Minerva Circle is an integral part of our Foundation community. Thank you to our more than 200 generous Minerva Circle members who contributed more than $263,000 in 2009 in support of our mission. See page 19 for a complete list of members.

TheBookstores. The bookstores at the Minneapolis Central and Washburn libraries offer some of the best bargains in town for book lovers. Our stores sell a combination of books “weeded” from the library collection and books donated by the public. In addition, the Central Library store features library merchandise, including iconic t-shirts, book bags, and other gifts. In the spring, the Central Bookstore hosted a rare book sale, which included World War I Posters, a first American edition of Orwell’s 1984, a magazine containing the first ever appearance of a Sherlock Holmes story, vintage children’s story books, and more.

Our stores are operated with the support of 59 volunteers, who contributed 3,966 hours in 2009. The stores raised $130,000 to support the Foundation and Library in 2009.

FriendsCoordination. In 2009, the Library Foundation started to assume coordination of the independent Library Friends groups in Hennepin County. Library staff previously fulfilled this role. This model brings together all the library support organizations, builds on successful practices used elsewhere, and provides a base for strengthened Library support. Friends groups help their local library by volunteering, raising funds, and serving as ambassadors for Library programs and services. As the coordinating organization, the Library Foundation supports the independent Library Friends groups and coordinates system-wide activities for the Friends and Foundation. Developing new Friends groups at libraries where currently none are in place and strengthening the support of the existing Friends groups are top priorities for the Foundation. In total, the Friends groups throughout the system provided more than $173,000 in 2009 to support programs, collections, Library initiatives, and equipment.

To learn more about existing Friends groups and libraries starting new groups, contact the Foundation at 952-847-8109 or [email protected].
