What the library staff are reading

Graeme The art of travel by Alain de Botton.

What motivates human beings to travel and why they are sometimes disappointed when they do? De Botton, who uses examples from literature and art to illustrate his observations, writes with elegance and wit. An enjoyable and insightful read.

Kerrie Sacred hearts by Sarah Dunant. This historical novel is set in 1570 in Ferrara, Italy, in a convent. The women in the convent have all been "married to Christ" and have been assigned to the convent usually because they couldn't find a husband. The story centres around the arrival of 16-year-old Serafina, an angry young woman with an angelic voice who has been forced into the convent by her father, and the relationships that develop within the convent walls.

Mary Chalcot Crescent by Fay Weldon.

In this novel, it's Britain in 2013 and the global financial crisis has really taken hold. Food, clothing, petrol, housing are in short supply. No more elected governments - the bureaucrats and sociologists have taken over. Grow your own vegies, and eat the state supplied National Meatloaf (suitable for vegetarians). From the perspective of a very successful and famous 80-year-old woman, who has lived through the Depression, World War II, rationing and boom times. Only a little far fetched....

Melissa Chemical free kids: raising healthy children in a toxic world by Sarah Lantz.

Utterly terrifying but useful and practical as well. Looks at the chemicals present in many skin care and cosmetic products as well as in the food we eat, the toys our children play with and cleaning products among others. Asks important questions such as what are toxic chemicals, how do they get into the human body, what health problems do they cause, why are children more susceptible and makes suggestions as to what we as parents can do about it.

Where is the green sheep by Mem Fox.

A delightful bedtime story book for children of any age. Humorous and engaging, this is sure to grab your child's attention.
