Citation Management

• Elsevier buys Mendeley

Mendeley, a free to use citation management software, and collaboraton tool is sold to Elsevier for almost 100mill iondollar.Mendeley was doing a good job in the market of the citation management software. Not only can you easily organise yourpdf's with Mendeley, you can also easily share them with others. This way of open sharing of articles is very popularamong academics. Not everybody is happy with the sale, there is some distrust against the remaining openness ofMendeley. Read the observation in the Scientific American under the title:"Elsevier (giant for-profit scholarly publisher)buys Mendeley (free citation manager and discovery tool)".

• Endnote X6 for iPad

Thomson Reuters released an iPad app for Endnote. Unfortunately this is not for free, but costs € 9,- . It synchroniseswith your EndnoteWeb.

WRITING & PUBLISHING/OPEN ACCESS

•Nature app for iPad

There is a new app to read Nature on your iPad. Search in AppStore for Nature NPG. You can download it for free. Thisversion 2.1 is a much improved version of the first Ipad and iPhone Nature app.Be sure to make a personal account with Nature when you are in the NIOO domain, then you can simply login to youraccount on the iPad to read the latest Nature articles.

•Nature special on the future of publishing

On March 28, 2013 NPG published a special Nature issue, devoted to the future of scholarly publishing.it is about the costs of publishing, about the open-access movement and about the new ways of disseminating researchfindings.

SEARCHING & RESEARCH

•Peer Review

In 2010 I posted a blog on peer review to annouce the peer review guide from RIN "Quality assurance and assessment ofscholarly research"and the presentations and summary of the "KNAW Symposium Does peer review stil l have a future?".In the Library and Information Newsletter Autumn 2010 I wrote about Pubcreds (project never started) and LiquidPublications(project ended May 2011), all methods to try to change the peer review system. Unfortunately it does notseem to have had any effect. Also the Peer-to-Peer Blog in Nature where the peer review discussion was held closed.Peer review as a selection method for funding agency's has been studied by a special forum of the ESF (EuropeanScience Foundation), and they have published a guide.

There are new intitiatives like Peerage of Science, a method to do the peer review independed of the journal.A specialdiscussion focus is on 'open peer review' or public peer review. Copernicus publisher of Open Access Journals is in favorand actually performs open peer review. Other are hesitating and a Nature trial did not turn out positive.

Focussing about the bias in Peer Review an article was published in the Journal of the American Scoiety for InformaitonScience and Tecnology (Lee, C. J., Sugimoto, C. R., Zhang, G. and Cronin, B. (2013), Bias in peer review. J. Am. Soc. Inf.Sci., 64: 2–17. doi: 10.1002/asi.22784) . With centrally the question if ' impartiality' is possible.

To study the alternatives to peer review Stefano Allesina developed a framework "Modeling peer review: an agent-basedapproach" in Ideas in Ecology and Evolution vol 5, no. 2, 2012.

RESEARCH DATA

• Research Data Alliance

In March 2013 the Research Data All iance was inaugurated. This all iance aims to work on a global, interoperableinfrastructure of research data. Their goal is to promote standards and to make it easier for scientist to share and

(re-)use data. The EU participates through the iCordi project funded under the 7th Framework Program.

• Open Research Data to prevent fraude

As a reaction of the fraude from scientist Stapel KNAW has published a report : "Responsible research data managementand the prevention of scientific misconduct" The pdf can be downloaded from the site.In this report from a Commission chaired by prof K. Schuyt an inventory was made on the practices in various disciplineson how to deal with research data and which policies and practices are satisfactory.

• Value of research data

CWTS is investigating the use of bibliometric indicators to apply to research data. Since the archiving and sharing ofresearch data becomes more and more common practice and in some cases becomes obligatory, there is also a need toquantify the impact of the (re) use of data. In this study, on behalf of the combined European ICT organisations forHigher Education (in The Netherlands Surf) Knowledge Exchange, CWTS points out ways to measure the impact of data incitations or in altmetrics (social media citations). The study is called: "The Value of Research Data Metrics for datasetsfrom a cultural and technical point of view".

CITATION TRACKING/ RANKING

• Research Evaluation

Last November Research at NIOO was evaluated by an international committee. You can read the results on theKNAW-website.

In the UK a study was made to the actual impact, the economic impact and the societal impact of the research of aconglomeration of universities from The Russell Group."Russell Group universities are highly effective and successful in the commercial exploitation of their research." Thecommercial value of the universities spinn-offs is estimated to be more than 700mill ion GBP. You cna read about theexamples and the economic impact in the report"Economic Impact of Research at Russell Group Universities".The economic value of universities, which has been well documented whether in terms of enhanced earning potential forindividual students or contributions to national GDP, sits alongside a social value of educating a skil led, questioning andengaged population and developing the leaders of tomorrow, and a spirit of intellectual exchange between universitiesand local communities, business and public bodies. You can read more about it in the report "Social Impact of Researchat Russell Group Universities".

•Leiden ranking

CWTS has published the Leiden ranking. In this l ist they compare the major global universities. The main ranking isaccording to PPtop10% which means that the highest score is for the university that has the highest percentage ofpapers that were in the top 10% of highly cited papers world wide in the same field and year. Highes score is for MITwith 25%. (25% of their papers belong to the top 10% of highly cited papers). And another important indicator is the MNCS indicator which means that the highes score is for the university whosepapers are cited most calculated from the world average of 1. Again MIT scores best woth an indicator of 2.15.

Research institutes like NIOO-KNAW were not taken into account. But you can look for yourself what NIOO's positionwould have been:and sorted on PPtop10% (top 10%) with 21% and sorting on MNCS (indicator for normalized citationcounting) 1.67.

•Factsheet and Business Report

In March we made the quatitative report from our output to the KNAW over 2012, and we published the Business Report. In 2012 NIOO published 186 scientific papers, 15 book chapters and 30 popular or professional papers. In total NIOOemployees lectured 155 times at scientific conferences.

In the Business Report we can read the citation metrics of our senior researchers. And we can see that more than 10 ofour researchers have an h-index over 30!In general, but it differs greatly per sub discipline, the really good citation scores starts with an h-index from 15. (20NIOO collegues).

Apart from the citation reports in Web of Science every author can also make his/her own citation profile in GoogleScholar. To show the differences and similarities I made and gave a presentation at NIOO entitled: "Citation counting:ResearcherID vs Google Scholar Citation".You can check out the pps and check out in ResearcherID (search for Institution but be aware that the name of ourinstitute is spelled differently) and Google Scholar Citations for yourself the NIOO citation scores . Both ResearcherIDand Google Scholar Citations are individually managed citation and publication lists.

• NIOO publications in 2013

The NIOO publications are published on the website dynamically from Metis. The publication lists on the website for theindividual departments / working groups are also directly from Metis.

In March 2013, 37 articles can be found in Web of Science. In our own database we have registered already 59 publishedpublications and in press. The 158 articles from 2012 in Web of Science were cited 230 times. Check out the latest NIOOpublications on our website: NIOO Publications ,or subscribe to the RSS-alert from Web of Science to get the latestupdates. There is a widget which shows the latest NIOO publication entered in Web of Science on our Publication Page.

• Citations of NIOO publications published in 2012 and 2013

In Web of Science we can find in Dec 2012: 158 articles published in 2012. The 158 articles from 2012 and the 37articles from 2013 in Web of Science are cited 253 times.

The best cited articles are:
