Biking and WalkingBallston is located near the shared-use Custis and Bluemont Junction Trails and there are bike lanes along Fairfax Drive. Additionally, there are 54 bike racks at the Ballston Metro Station on Fairfax Dr. and N. Stuart Street. Guaranteed Ride Home If you regularly (2 days a week or more) com-mute to work by carpool, vanpool, bike, walk, or public transportation, you are eligible for the Guaranteed Ride Home program! This program provides FREE rides home (up to 4 times a year) when the unexpected arises such as unscheduled overtime, illness, family emergency, or sick child. FAQs  

How do I load money on my SmarTrip Card? In a Metro station: Locate the blue SmarTrip card machines. Touch your card to the SmarTrip logo. Follow the prompts on the screen. Increase or decrease value card. Touch your card to the SmarTrip logo again to finish the transaction. On a bus: Press the ADD VALUE button on the fare box. Touch your SmarTrip card to the SmarTrip logo. Insert money into the box. Touch SmarTrip card again to load the money and finish the transaction. You will need to touch your card a third time to pay for your fare.  

How do I bring my bike on Metro or a bus? On the Metro: Bikes are permitted on Metro all times except peak hours 6 a.m.‐9 a.m., 4 p.m.‐7 p.m. Enter the 2 sets of doors at either end of a Metro car, not the center door. Do not block doors. On a bus: Bikes are allowed on the bike racks any time of day. Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop. Squeeze the top latch of the bike rack to open it and fold down. Lift your bike onto the bike rack and ensure the tires are in the trough with the front tire toward the spring‐loaded bar. Bring the spring‐loaded bar up and over the front tire near the bike’s frame. The bike is now secure. Do the opposite when taking the bike off the rack. Ensure you have all of your belongings and wave to the driver once you are off the street to let them know you are finished.  

What are the operating hours for Metrorail, Metrobus and ART bus? Metrorail – Check local station for train departures. Weekday 5:30 a.m. – 12 a.m. Weekend 7 a.m. – 3 a.m. Metrobus – Varies depending on route;

Where can I find rider information such as alerts, disruptions, and real‐time arrivals? MetroAlerts is an email and text message subscription service for notifying customers of Metro service disruptions. Notices can be sent to any device capable of receiving email or text messages. Riders can check the real‐time arrival status of their train or bus via Next Train or Next Bus on WMATA’s website.  

 How do I get home in an emergency if I use transit? Commuter Connections sponsors the Guaranteed Ride Home program in which you can register as a daily transit rider and receive a free ride if you have an emergency. They will guarantee a ride home, or wherever you need to go, free of charge up to 4 times a year with a taxi or local car service. Visit the Commuter Connections website to sign up.

 SmarTrip Card A permanent, rechargeable farecard that can hold up to $300 in Metrorail value. The card costs $5 and can be recharged at Metrorail fare card machines and online. Also accepted on all Metrobus routes and at Metro‐operated parking lots.  One Day Metrorail Pass Valid for one day of unlimited Metrorail travel on weekdays after 9:30 a.m. or all day on Saturdays, Sundays or federal holidays. The Saturday nights). 

 7‐day Rail Fast Pass Valid for seven consecutive days of unlimited Metrorail travel. 

 

7‐day Rail Short Trip Pass Valid for seven consecutive days of Metrorail trips during peak periods (weekdays 5:30‐9:30 a.m. and 3‐7 p.m.) or trips of any cost at all other times. You may use the Exitfare machine to add fare if necessary. The pass will be returned to you for continued use during valid period.  

Metrorail Farecard  This paper farecard holds from $2.70 to $45. Farecards are available at fare card machines in Metrorail stations or online in $10 and $20 denominations.

Commute Planner  

Assistance  in relieving the stress, time, and cost of commuting has become a highly valued,  low‐cost fringe benefit for employees and residents. Difficult commutes heavily  impact many employees and residents, and for many of them, a more  restful,  time‐saving or  cost‐saving alternative  such as  rail, bus, and  carpooling or  vanpooling  in HOV  lanes has proven to be extremely beneficial in the following ways:           Providing employees and residents with the tools and resources they need to make informed decisions regarding their commutes is one of the easiest and least expensive benefits an employer or property manager can provide. It can also have the largest impact on the way your employees or residents choose to get to work.  Arlington Transportation Partners’ Commute Planner provides your employees or residents with the options they need to  improve  their  commute.  From personalized  transit options  to  information on  sharing  the  ride,  they will have  the information they need to make an educated decision about their commute alternatives.  The information provided is based on each individual’s commute. ATP analyzes the individual’s home address and pulls together all of the  information  including bus schedules and routes that that particular person could use to get to their work  location.  ATP  gathers  this  information  together  in  a  document  and  labels  each  Commute  Planner  with  the individuals’ names. All information is kept confidential and not used for any other purposes.  You may choose to distribute the Planners yourself or we will ship the Planners directly to the home address. ATP can also come to your worksite or property and present the portfolios and commuting  information at an event. Electronic Commute Planners are also available.    To receive the Commute Planner for your employees or residents simply send your ATP representative a listing of each person’s name or unique identifier, home/work address, and departure time. Arlington Transportation Partners will do the rest. Please allow 10 business days to develop your planners.
