KEYNOTE PANEL: MAGNA CARTA: BIRTH OF DEMOCRACY OR HISTORICAL FANTASY?

Our Saturday keynote celebrates the 800th Anniversary of the Magna Carta. Considered one of the most important documents in legal history, this panel brings together experts in law, history and politics to explore the legacy, im-pact and importance of the Magna Carta. Is the Magna Carta oversold, or was it really the beginning of Democracy? And 800 years on, do we need a constitutional reboot for the modern era?

SPEAKERS:

FEMINISM, LIBERALISM AND THE FREE MARKET.

Libertarians can have an uneasy relationship with ‘the F-word’. Whilst feminism was born of liberalism, modern variants can take on a very different and less liberal form. Does a commitment to individualism and the market-place really disadvantage women? Should modern liberals reclaim what it is to be a feminist, or is the battle already won?

THREATS TO LIBERTY: THE FUTURE OF ESSENTIAL FREEDOMS:

In many ways the modern world is freer than ever before. However, threats to political, social and economic liberty endure, be they in the form of religious extremism, unsustainable government debt or self-censoring ‘stepford students’. This panel examines the challenges facing liberal society, and what we can do to combat them.

DIGITAL DYSTOPIAS: CIVIL LIBERTIES IN A DIGITAL AGE

Edward Snowden’s revelations may have made headlines, but have they had an impact on government policy? Do corporations have an obligation to safeguard consumers’ identities, or are we entering a post-priva-cy world?

THE PROBLEM WITH SOCIAL DEMOCRACY:

Arguments for libertarianism are often based on unconvincing premises or designed to refute outdated ideologies, like 20th Century socialism. In this lecture, Sam will suggest that libertarianism must use democratic ignorance and updated Hayekian insights about the limits of ‘evidence based’ technocratic rule to reconstruct itself as an intellectually rigorous challenger to the 21st Century’s dominant ideology: social democracy

The Liberty League exists for students and professionals committed to the defence of freedom. The Liberty League acts as an organisation and a network for societies across the intellectual and political spectrum, helping to inform, recruit and develop supporters of Liberty.

As an organisation, that means helping out pro-liberty individuals and student societies: getting them connected with one another, offering guidance and support, and making sure they’re plugged into the wider pro-liberty movement in the UK, with its host of think tanks and campaign groups.

It also means holding big conferences, like our annual Liberty League Freedom Forum. We’re also keen to work with individual societies to set up smaller, regional events.

Liberty League is run entirely by young volunteers. If you are interested in getting involved with Liberty League at a national level, or would like to set up a student society or revitalize an existing one, come and say hi to one of the team, or drop us a line at [email protected].

ARI fosters a growing awareness, understanding and acceptance of Ayn Rand’s philosophy - Objectivism - in order to create a culture whose guiding principles are reason, rational self-interest and laissez-faire capitalism - a culture in which individuals are free to pursue their own happiness. We will offer speaker events around the continent, websites in most European languages and a forum to partic-ipate in various ways for those interested. Students are very important to us, hence we offer an array of educa-tional programs to enable students at all levels of knowledge to learn about Ayn Rand’s philosophy and novels.

Ayn Rand Institute in Europe The Ayn Rand Institute Europe (ARI) will be launched at a public event on the 28th of April in Copenhagen, Denmark. For further details, see https://ari.aynrand.org/ARI/Home/Events.

Host a Speaker Event We would like to talk to organizations and individuals who can host a speaker event and offer a venue for an audi-ence of at least 50 people, preferably in a major metropolitan area. Free-market-oriented think tanks and student organizations are some of our preferred partners. If you are interested, please email: [email protected]. Help Promote Our Events You can help spread the word about our speaker events and web presence. Forward invitations you receive, share postings on our Facebook page (/AynRandInstituteEurope), attend events and bring your friends. Add your email to ARI’s mailing list at www.aynrand.org/signup and add your home country in the Zip Code field. Or request to be added to our European email list at [email protected]. Become a Volunteer We need volunteers in several countries to help us with translations, postings, event organizing, attending a handout table at speaker conferences, etc. If you are interested, please email: [email protected] and specify what you are best suited to do. Contribute to ARI In Ayn Rand’s words, “Anyone who fights for the future, lives in it today.” We appreciate anything you can give to support the fight for individual rights and reason in Europe. For more details, see https://ari.aynrand.org/support.

The Adam Smith Institute is one of the world’s leading think tanks. Independent, non-profit and non-partisan, it works to promote libertarian and free market ideas through research, publishing, media commentary, and educa-tional programmes. The Institute is today at the forefront of making the case for free markets and a free society in the United Kingdom.

The Institute was founded in the 1970s, as post-war socialism reached its high-watermark. It has always been a practical think-tank rather than an academic organization, and has endeavored to work with policymakers to deliver real change, and to make free market ideas reality.

In its early days, the Institute was known for its pioneering work on privatization, deregulation, and tax reform, and for its advocacy of internal markets in healthcare and education.Today, the Institute’s focus is on expanding market mechanisms and libertarian policies to help the poor. Current policies advocated by the ASI include radical reform of the planning system, a national minimum income, acknowledgement of the benefits of immigration, and market monetarism.

There several ways you can get involved with the the Adam Smith Institute. You can start attending our events, join our under-30s group, The Next Generation, follow us on Twitter @ASI, and read our daily blog at www.adamsmith.org/blog.

Big Brother Watch was founded by Matthew Elliott in 2009 with the intention of exposing the true scale of the surveillance state by challenging the policies which threaten our privacy, our freedoms and our civil liberties.

Big Brother Watch campaigns on behalf of the individual, to educate and encourage more control over personal data. We work to ensure that those who fail to respect our privacy, whether private companies, government departments or local authorities are held to account.

We produce unique research which shines a light on the dramatic expansion of surveillance powers in the UK, the growth of the database state and the misuse of personal information. Our briefings are regularly cited in Parliament, in government reports and in the national media.

Protecting individual privacy and defending civil liberties, Big Brother Watch is a campaign group for the digital age.

Business for Britain exists to give a voice to the large, but often silent, majority among Britain’s business commu-nity who want to see fundamental changes made to the terms of our EU membership. We are independent and non-partisan, involving people from all parties and no party. As a campaign, we aim to re flect the views of our business signatories, and the campaign is represented in the media and at events by people with real business experience. Business for Britain will ensure that the British people understand that many UK business people want a better deal from Brussels and are not scared to fight to achieve that change.

The TaxPayers’ Alliance is the UK’s grassroots campaign for lower taxes and cuts in wasteful government spending. We have played a major role in changing the political debate and our pioneering work exposing government waste has increased accountability across Government. We have fought off some damaging threatened tax rises, and achieved growth-creating tax cuts that prove our restless campaigning can change policy for the better.

We believe that government should stop piling up debt that future generations will have to pay off. Politicians need to think not about where their next vote comes from, but about who will have to pick up the pieces if they continue to avoid tough decisions.

It’s your future. Fight for it with the TaxPayers’ Alliance.

A firm believer in the impact of independent think tanks, Antony Fisher founded the Atlas Economic Research Foundation in 1981. Today, the Atlas Network connects more than 400 think tanks in 80+ countries. Each is writing its own story of how principled work to affect public opinion, on behalf of the ideas of a free society, can better individuals’ lives.

The Atlas Leadership Academy (ALA) is a central facet of the Atlas Network mission. It provides a robust series of credit-based training opportunities to allow individuals to sharpen their skills in management, communications and fundraising whilst contributing to the free market movement. The flexible course catalogue offers opportunities ranging from online courses and in-person workshops to one-on-one mentoring relationships.

The Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Studies is an organization of 65,000 conservative and libertarian lawyers, judges, law professors, and others dedicated to advancing the principles of the rule of law and the separa-tion of powers as the best means of preserving individual freedom and prosperity.

It is founded on the principles that the state exists to preserve freedom, that the separation of governmental powers is central to the American Constitution, and that it is emphatically the province and duty of the judiciary to say what the law is, not what it should be. The Society seeks both to promote an awareness of these principles and to further their application through its activities.
