From Mr. Casey Churchill, LCS Principal

Love and Logic Introductory ClassBy: Casey Churchill

“Mooooom, I will be out playing in the woods”, I would yell as I was half way out the door. Iwas raised on 50 wooded acres in Rochester, Minnesota, and I loved to roam the woodsand play in the river. I would be gone all day running through the woods, catching crawfish, building forts, and climbing trees. In the summer, there were few rules, but in the winter mymom would always tell me to stay off the icy creek. There is something about being told notto do something. For me, I became more curious. I had to check out that creek.

One cold wintery Minnesota day as I was exploring, I went to the creek. It was iced over but

that didn’t stop me. I stepped onto the ice and, of course, broke through. The creek wasshallow, but I was still drenched all the way up to my thighs. I remember running to ourhouse with my jeans beginning to stiffen as they began to ice up the closer I got. I ran in thehouse, immediately stripped off my pants, and put them in the hamper. Whew! How clever Ithought. “Mom will never know”. She obviously knew when she found the wet pants in thehamper that I fell in the creek. She never said anything to me about this escapade. I’vealways appreciated the length of rope my mom gave me while growing up. She allowed mejust enough to make my own choices and learn from my mistakes.

My mother didn’t know anything about Love and Logic at that time, but she had goodmotherly instincts and knew that growing up is all about learning from our mistakes. I neededroom to make my own choices early on when the ramifications were small versus when Iwas older and a bad choice has greater consequences.

On November 1st, Liberty is excited to present a seminar on Love and Logic. The title of thisseminar is Parenting the Love and LogicTM Way. This is a free introductory class offeredto all parents in the Liberty community. The presentation will be conducted by Dr. JasonClarke. We are pleased to have Dr. Clarke share his expertise on this topic as most of theLiberty staff have gone through similar training and incorporates Love and Logic in theirclassrooms. We hope you can join us for this evening to learn more about parenting bestpractices used at Liberty.

After November 1st, Dr. Clarke will return to Liberty on 1/24, 2/21, and 3/21 to offer a classheld on a monthly basis costing $69. This price includes a workbook that is designed towork hand in hand with the Love and Logic curricula. These workshops give parents theopportunity to have an interactive discussion with Dr. Clarke and one another on Love andLogic. Details about the November 1st class:

Liberty Needs Substitute Teachers And TAs. Have you always wanted to be aclassroom teacher or help in the classroom but thought you couldn't because you don’thave a teaching license? Well, now is your opportunity. You do not need a license to be asubstitute at Liberty. Liberty Common has seen a decrease in substitute teachers over thepast few years. We are looking for qualified parents to help in the school. Please know thatthere are two types of substitute teachers at Liberty. We have teacher subs and teacher-aidesubs. We need both. Teacher subs will be given lesson plans to teach throughout the dayand are in charge of running the classroom. TA subs are not in charge of running theclassroom, but help the teacher with various tasks such as morning and afternoon recess, grading papers and working with students one on one throughout the day. If you areinterested in either or both of these substitute options, please contact the front office and itwill provide you with necessary paperwork to begin this easy process. If anyone would liketo talk about assigned tasks and what the day looks like when subbing, we are here to helpanswer any questions. Please stop in and let's chat. We greatly rely on our substituteteachers when our current staff are out sick or in need of some time off.

Classical Learning Test. The Classic Learning Test (CLT)is a college-entrance exam that is accepted by colleges anduniversities, similar to the SAT and ACT tests. However, there are a few differences between the CLT and thoseother tests. Among standardized college entrance exams, the CLT provides the most accurate and rigorous measureof academic formation, accomplishment, and potential.

Seniors at LCHS will take this two-hour exam on the morning of Wednesday, October 11thand will be able to see their test results the same day. They may choose to submit theirresults directly to any of the colleges listed on the CLT website.
