Course Overview Course Description: Career and Community Connections is an application level course that applies the technical skills in careers related to providing for the needs of humans. This professional learning experience may be unpaid or paid, outside or within the school environment, but provides the opportunity for learners to focus on 21st century skills, and acquire job-seeking and retention skills needed to advance within this unique workplace. FCCLA: Future Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is a nationally affiliated

organization that focuses on the multiple roles of family members, wage earner and community

leaders. Members develop skills for life through character development; creative and critical

thinking; interpersonal communications; practical knowledge; and career preparation.

Membership in FCCLA is strongly encouraged for all Family and Consumer Services students.

Required Supplies:

1. Students will be provided with available technology and some materials for Labs.

2. You are required to bring two (2) 1 ½ inch 3-ring binder, 5-Section dividers, Notepaper, copy

paper, pencil, Blue or Black ink pens. * These will be used for logs and to keep all documentation

for submission.

Unit 1: Life’s Perspectives

1 week to complete (check calendar for dates) Standards: 0.5.1 Manage the physical and social environment to reduce conflict and promote safety in settings (i.e. family, work, community, and cyberspace). 7.1.3 Analyze personal, social, intellectual, economics, technical, educational, and recreational issues of individual and family under changing condition. 7.5.5 Maintain accurate documentation to be submitted in a timely manner to appropriate sources. Assignment/ Activity list: (you will be in the FCS classroom these first 2 weeks)

Read chapter 1 in the “What I Wish I Knew at 18” and complete the pointers in the workbook as you read.

Along with your teacher, complete the following documents from the PLEH;

Unit 2: Careers/Work Readiness

4 weeks to complete (check calendar for dates) Standards: 0.6.2 Determine that most appropriate response to workplace (school) situations based in legal and ethical considerations. 0.7.1 Organize a career portfolio (electronic or physical)to document knowledge, skills, and experience in a career field. 0.7.2 Recognize that individual career path has an impact on the national and global community. 7.4.1 Analyze opportunities for employment and community endeavors.


7.4.2 Summarize education and training requirements and opportunities for career paths in human service professions. 7.4.3 Analyze professional organizations in community and human services careers. 7.4.4 Summarize licensing law and regulations that affect service providers and their participants. 7.4.5 Compare professional, ethical, legal, and safety issues that confront human service employees. 7.5.7 Develop a portfolio utilizing a variety of presentation media.
