About Barbara Pommerenke SteelBarbara studied guitar (BEd, PGCE Music). She also gained a diploma in mandolin teaching.

Barbara co-founded the Lanarkshire Guitar and Mandolin Association and has designed, developed and delivered a wide range of music courses for all ages and abilities. Through her work with the British BMG Federation she has become involved in the development of the new syllabus for mandolin, which has been published by Victoria College of Music.

She works in local, national and international federations. She publishes compositions with Astute Music.

Barbara’s Workshop Beyond the dots and squiggles - Clasical Music This workshop will explore the interpretation of classical music. Participants will explore how to make the music more alive by adding dynamics, articulation and sound colours. A brief look at how the pieces are constructed will also help to guide our interpretation.

Participants will also be able to enhance their ensemble playing by exploring the role which each instrument plays at a certain time in the piece performed.

About Jochen RossJochen Ross was born in 1976 in Kassel, Germany. He studied classical mandolin and piano in Hamburg with Steffen Trekel and Prof. Hans-Georg Lotz. Following his Degree in Music he obtained a Post-graduate Degree in Early Music with the lute-specialist and Echo award winner Joachim Held. He was honoured with several international prizes and won the renowned competition for classical mandolin solo in Schweinfurt in 1999.

In 2003 he lived in Scotland for 6 months, working with Scottish mandolin teachers and tutoring on a variety of courses. Since 2003 he has been teaching at the New Music School near Hamburg.

Together with the guitarist Jens-Uwe Popp he recorded the two albums “Zeitpunkte” with contemporary music and “The Ten Islands” with modern arrangements of Scottish music. As a member of Malte Vief’s HeavyClassic Band he is touring regularly.

Jochen’s Workshop HeavyClassic - Concert Music that Rocks “Could Bach “rock” an audience? Can Deep Purple sound like 18th-century melodies? And is the result then still music with zeal?

Yes! At least the way HeavyClassic does it. HeavyClassic was born from a shared passion for both worlds. The composer, Malte Vief (guitar) does not conform to rigid genres and cannot be stuffed into musical pigeon holes. The pieces push, perforate, and pierce through the boundaries between rock and classical music. Whether delicate and melancholic, or explosive and stirring, HeavyClassic music is both moving and enduring.”

That is how Malte Vief describes his music. As a player of Maltes ensemble Jochen will introduce this personal, unique style and you will get the chance to learn to play some of Maltes music by yourself.
