Cover picture: Maureen Piper sent this wonderful picture of a Pale Tussock Moth which she discovered in her garage. Interesting how moths have adapted to their environment in so many different ways!

Last month, the cover picture was of the flowers on the local Horse Chestnut and I mentioned the rôle of insects in pollinating the flowers to ensure a crop of chestnuts, noting that there weren't as many bees as I expected. Neil Burden responded with a helpful email, explaining how the ‘candles’ of flowers in my photo showed that pollination by visiting insects was indeed under way, as the individual blooms were changing to a pink colour, which the tree uses to ‘tell’ the bees that they are closed for business - ‘move on to the next flower!’ ...Clever old natural selection - no nectar wasted, and ensuring that the bees head for the blooms still in need of pollination. Neil also mentioned the ability of insects to ‘sniff out’ a food source from miles around. We do know that some moths and butterflies can smell a mate from literally miles, due to pheromones (scents) carried on the wind, and that mosquitoes can sense a potential meal by sniffing out our exhaled carbon dioxide from 50 yards away. So if the mozzies are around, hold your breath (!)

Another nature thought- have you, like me, been trying to avoid driving into the adult birds and fledglings which seem to dart out just in front of the car every time I drive the back lanes? The only way to succeed is to drive really slowly- but isn’t it difficult? Perhaps we should have some of those ‘Twenty is Plenty’ speed limit signs during the nesting season. Might annoy the Delivery Racing Drivers’ Club who seem oblivious to other road users including pet cats, birds, horses and wildlife. Birds aren’t adapted to judging the movement of vehicles approaching from the side at a similar speed to theirs, due to the location of their eyes in the skull, so please take your time when out driving; and on another problem for birds - don’t forget to put the collar with bells onto your feline companion if you have to let it out hunting during the day. Elasticated for safety, of course. Saddened to see a local cat ‘bringing home a little present’ the other day, an adult bird in its jaws, the victim probably too busy getting food for the waiting brood to see the cat in time. Happens too often at this time of year.

TREBULLETT METHODIST CHURCH

Our coffee morning on Saturday 1st

June was very successful with a good number of

people coming to support us and the new Youth Club. The tea and coffee were plentiful

and the cakes were, as usual, completely delicious. A good atmosphere with lots of

friendly chat. The morning raised just under £150 for the Youth Club.

Our only other event in June was the Big Lunch on Sunday

16th

June. Ideally this would have been a street party but the

weather said no; and so the lunch was held in the big hall at

Trecarrell Manor, the home of Neil and Ruth Burden. The

aim of the lunch was to bring together all the people who

live in Trebullett and this certainly succeeded. About 60

came along including children, all bringing donations of

many kinds of delicious food. We had a free raffle with

lovely prizes and a lucky dip for the children. The

atmosphere was convivial and new acquaintances made as

well as old ones renewed. Shame about the weather but

we all enjoyed ourselves immensely anyway! Thanks go to

Neil and Ruth Burden for having us all to their home.

We now look forward to our Strawberry Tea on the 21st

July and our annual Sunday

Summer Lunch on 25th

August – see below and opposite page.

FILM AFTERNOONS – 1st

Sunday of each month

A UNITED KINGDOM tells the inspiring real-life ro-

mance of Seretse Khama, King of Bechuanaland

(modern Botswana) and Ruth Williams, the London

office worker he married in 1948. Their bi-racial mar-

riage caused a major international outcry, but they

refused to allow prejudice and political pressure rip

their marriage apart.

Come and join us to watch this inspiring film, which

helps us process the world around us and consider

social and cultural struggles more deeply. A UNITED

KINGDOM will be shown at Coads Green Chapel on

Sunday 7th

July at 2:30 pm.

pellets, though).

At our May Lunch Club, we were pleased to hear that Joy Ford was making excellent

progress following her recant spell in hospital and she wished to thank all the people

who had sent their best wishes for a speedy recovery. Brenda put everyone in a good

mood by telling a couple of elderly forgetfulness jokes before the meal arrived, which

was a pork chop with vegetables followed by pear and ginger tart and custard.

Our speakers were Barry Gibson who used to be a superintendent in St Johns

Ambulance Brigade and Pete Wyatt, both with certificates in First Aid Training. They are

volunteers, receiving no salary and any money they do receive goes towards paying for

the £1,500 for insurance when attending events and other necessary costs such as new

demonstration bandages which are rarely used, but are dated with a life span. These

are not thrown away, but sent to third world countries. Their remit was to show how

to help someone unconscious or about to be so, such as choking. Barry took the part of

the patient while Pete became the First Aider, demonstrating how the arms and leg

could be placed in the recovery position in different countries, but especially the best

position for the head. They went through the procedure for helping a patient who is

choking, from patting on the back to finally when to call an ambulance. A handy and

informative booklet can be obtained from Launceston Voluntary First-Aid Service.

On 11th June the Lunch Club

members and helpers all enjoyed

a carvery lunch at The Manor

House in Rilla Mill—this was a gift

to all of us thanks to the skill of

Ruth Burden in gaining a grant to

cover the cost. The lunch was

delicious, the company was good

and the chatter showed that all

were enjoying themselves to the

utmost. Thanks to Ruth for all her

work in arranging this outing.

Anyone who would like to join the Lezant Lunch Club please telephone Ruth on 01566

782286 or Audrey on 01566 773062 for more details and to reserve a place.

PARISH TAXI SCHEME

FOR RESIDENTS OF LEZANT PARISH ONLY

The parish council subsidy for the taxi scheme is now £4 per trip, return £4 each way. The fares

charged by Launceston Taxis are as below. As a resident of Lezant Parish, you are entitled to a

subsidy of £4.00 for any taxi journey at any time, so long as a taxi is available. To take advantage of the

scheme the taxi must be pre-booked through Launceston Taxis on 07340 813434. The taxi driver will

have a form that he will complete. You sign the form and pay the reduced rate to the driver. Please note

that the single fares quoted below are for guidance only, if you live outside one of the villages the fare

may differ slightly:

Lezant £8.00 Subsidy £4.00 You pay £4.00

Tregada £8.00 You pay £4.00

Trekenner £9.00 You pay £5.00

Trekelland £8.00 You pay £4.00

Trebullett £9.00 You pay £5.00

Treburley £9.00 You pay £5.00

Rezare £9.50 You pay £5.50

Eg, a return journey from Treburley to Launceston will cost £10 in total. The Parish Council would

encourage all residents to use the taxi whenever possible although it is appreciated that a taxi is not

always available. Pre-booking the day before can sometimes help. Remember, the taxi cannot be

used on a regular basis for commuting between home and work, nor as a school-run vehicle.

Following the Regulation 14 Consultation it was deemed necessary to draw

settlement boundaries. Treburley, Lezant and Trebullett had existing

boundaries which we could adopt but new ones were drawn for Higher Larrick,

Trekenner and Rezare.

Our May outing was to The Garden House at Buckland

Monachorum. The weather was perfect and we enjoyed

ambling through the many paths which led into different

parts of the garden. The rhododendrons were at their peak

and the colours were vibrant. The Wisteria was coming to an

end but it still covered a bridge and I think we all sat by the

Wisteria wall which, as the sun was shining onto it, gave off

its lovely perfume. We visited at a good time as many of the

other shrubs were in bloom, including the blue and white

Camassias which were at their peak.

The garden has changed a lot since I last visited 18 years ago but I could pick out some

parts I remembered. I wandered around with Tessa who pointed out the Pig Nut plant.

These are the nuts sung about in the rhyme ‘Here we go gathering nuts in May’ and

the nuts are underground. We don’t just look on these trips, we learn as well!

Tea and very nice cakes were enjoyed at the end of the visit in the Garden tea rooms.

Our July visit is on Wednesday 17th to Gardens Cottage at St Blazey. Meet at Lezant

Church lychgate at 1.30pm. Approx cost of garden entry is £4.

SUCCESS FOR FAITH CHEVANNES (NEE BURDEN)

Faith is an artist – you may have seen some of her work

printed on cards for sale at local craft markets – and

this year was successful in one of her works being ac-

cepted for exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts

Summer Exhibition held in London.

Over 20,000 works are submitted by various artists for

the exhibition, including paintings, mixed media, sculp-

ture and many others. A panel of judges then whittles

this down to 1,500. Those of you who saw the BBC

Documentary “Royal Academy Summer Exhibition” will therefore appreciate the hur-

dles that Faith succeeded with to have her drypoint etching “The Fascinating London

Faux Dodo” accepted. Well done, Faith. We all wish you every success in the future.

Last chance to see the Launceston GPO Exhibition at Lawrence House.

The wonderful exhibition of all things postal at Lawrence House Museum comes to an

end at the end of July so now is the time to go. It’s all there – stamps and post boxes,

telegraphs and telegrams to telephones of all types and varieties and all sorts of deliv-

ery vehicles. Don’t miss it. New on display is a wonderful quilt worked by Emma Dunn

between 1889 and 1930. Her name and dates appear on it as

well as an anchor and various embroidered flowers and but-

terflies. Most patchwork quilts are made using regular geo-

metric shapes. Here the pieces are odd shapes odd material

a lot of it velvet, joined by embroidery and embellished by

the maker. It has been given to the museum by Mrs Marian

Mead whose mother was Lucy Dunn, a member of the Dunn family who ran a grocery

business at the corner of Broad Street and Western Road. They built the shop (now

Boots) on the site of the Little White Hart Hotel. Previously they had run the business

where the butchers is in Westgate Street. Entry to the museum is still free so you can

come as often as you like. You can contact the museum by telephone on 01566 773277

and by email: [email protected] Check out our website at
