couragement to the amilies o her patients during dicult timesaced with loss. Add to her resume caring or her own amily and ason who was diagnosed with a brain tumor, in addition to spendingmany years dedicated to missions in second and third world coun-tries, and it is apparent that most o Lisas lie has been dedicated tohelping others.

ouched very personally by the pain o seeing someone she lovessuer, Lisa is able to relate very closely with her patients and their

amilies. Eight years ago, her son was diagnosed with a brain tumor.

O the experience, Lisa says, Tankully, (my son) is doing well atthis time, but unortunately some o his cancer riends have died.

I believe the Lord allowed me to go through this experience so Icould help others through dicult times. When asked i she had aavorite quote or something o inspiration that assisted her in goingthrough some o those dicult times, Lisa reerred to Isaiah 40:31:But those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; theyshall mount up with wings as eagles, they shall run and not be wea-ry; and they shall walk and not aint.

Lisa is grateul or her eye opening experience with missionswork, as she was able to witness rst hand amilies with no edu-cation and no resources caring or dying loved ones. Te healingpower o compassion has been instrumental to Lisa in her work asa hospice nurse.

As it is oen said, behind every great man is a woman, the reverserequently holds true as well. Lisa credits her husband, Lee with be-ing the biggest infuence in her career. He is my biggest an and ogreat comort to me when I come home aer a dicult day.

Growing up, Nancy Rush Geib always wanted to be a nurse and shealways wanted to attend Clemson University. A ew years beore shegraduated rom high school, Clemson began a nursing program.Tat got me through nursing school, says Nancy, God led meto hospice 26 years later. Nancy now works as RN Case Managerand Preceptor or MSA Hospice. She manages end o lie care or

We providecomort and symptom management or our patients while workingclosely with amily members to help them provide quality care andemotional support as they care or their loved ones at home. Lisa(Furr) and I also train new hospice nurses or our regional areawhich includes eight oces.

Nancy enjoys visiting her patients in their homes and not beingconned to an oce eight hours a day. She eels as though the in-home visits provide her with a better understanding o the patientsliestyle and needs, which enables her to better coordinate all as-

pects o their care to ensure that their lie goals are met.

Nancy eels as though her work at hospice has helped her to becomea more compassionate nurse as she deals with patients and amiliesin what is probably their time o greatest need. Ive learned muchabout people, dierent cultures, belies, and liestyles. I hope thatIve learned to take people where they are and lead them throughthe hospice journey.

Nancy is able to draw rom her own lie experiences and the com-pelling comort o a riend at a very dicult and trying time in herlie. In 1993, her husbands job transerred him to Atlanta and heramily was orced to leave all o their riends and amily and their

local church. Every Sunday when we got home rom church therewould be a voice mail rom my dear riend Marie Bridges encourag-ing us and letting us know she was praying or us.

When asked who had been the most infuential persons in her ca-reer, Nancy credits her mother with distinction, My mom alwayswanted to be a nurse, but grew up in a amily o ten during the de-

pression and didnt have the unds to go to nursing school. She al-ways encouraged me, prayed or me and even helped me study ortests. Additionally, Nancy is grateul or Edna McCain as Ms. Mc-Cain has been the greatest infuence on me in my hospice careerShe is the most air and truly caring administrator Ive ever workedor she knows hospice and she is never too busy to stop and helpany o us gure out a way to better care or or meet the needs o ourpatients and their amilies.
