Course content
The course begins with an exploration into theories behind learning and second language acquisition, and a brief overview of some English grammar e.g. tenses and their aspects. However, most of your language awareness will develop as you prepare for and teach your lessons. Your input sessions will focus more on developing skills and techniques for the classroom and will introduce you to the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and pronunciation teaching. Along with all of this, and as you get to grips with lesson planning, you will then start to notice how this translates into the classroom while you observe our language school teachers in action.
*The price does not include the Trinity moderation fee (£143). This fee is subject to change by Trinity College London. A £200 deposit is required to book your place on the course.**Please note lessons also take place on the bank holidays (19 April & 22 April)Early bird discountsFull-time course is only GBP 999 if you book 3 months before the start date.Part-time course is only GBP 1245 if you book 3 months before the start date.
Prices & dates
You will learn a ‘mystery language’ over four sessions and analyse the experience as both a student and a teacher, which will form the basis of your first assignment. For your second assignment you will select an international student at school to interview, record, assess, teach, and prescribe a tailored course for.
Following an opening period of only input sessions, teaching practice will start taking up the majority of your time on the course. After meeting and placing the students by level, you will deliver four 30-minute lessons, followed by four 1-hour lessons (observed). Each lesson will conclude with a feedback session with a tutor and some of your peers. That same evening you will write a short reflection of your lesson considering the feedback you received (not discounting your own!).
Every time you teach you will be expected to design materials for your lesson. Towards the end of the course you will select one piece of material from one of your lessons and evaluate its effectiveness.
The course culminates with a Trinity moderation visit on the final day, where the trainees are interviewed individually and as a group. The moderator also reviews all course work.

Other sources of funding
You may be eligible to apply for funding through other initiatives such as Erasmus+. Speak to your employer, school/university, local council or national funding body to find out more.
Professional and Career Developments Loans
We are approved by the Professional and Careers Development Loan organisation as a learning provider for CertTESOL. This means that you can, if eligible, apply for a loan to help pay for your CertTESOL course at our training centre.
Professional and Career Development Loans are commercial bank loans that you can use to help pay for work-related learning. You can borrow between £300 and £10,000 to help support the cost of up to two years of learning (or three years if it includes one year’s relevant unpaid practical work). The Government will pay the interest on the loan while you are learning and for one month afterwards. You will then need to start repaying the loan as you would any other commercial loan product. You can use the loan to pay course fees or other costs such as travel and living expenses. You can also use the loan to supplement other forms of support such as grants or bursaries. As the Professional and Career Development Loan is a commercial loan product, you should make sure you have investigated all the funding options that may be open to you to ensure you take an informed decision about whether the loan is right for you. For further information on financial assistance to support your learning, please visit the GOV.UK website or contact the National Careers Service on 0800 100 900. Our learning provider identification number is 10237.
Armed Forces Learning (ELC) Scheme
We are an Approved Learning Provider under the Armed Forces Learning (ELC) Scheme (provider no.6467). This scheme is open to all serving members of the Armed Forces and any ex-service personnel who are registered for ELC. If you are planning your resettlement training or want to further your own professional development, get in touch.
1- and 2-week courses in Southampton
At the Lewis Teacher Training Centre, we offer a number of in-service training courses for experienced and developing teachers, most of which are eligible for EU funding - see page 11.
We welcome both groups and individuals onto our teacher training courses. Our core courses are listed below. However, we can also create a bespoke course for you. Take a look at the long list of training topics that we can offer (see www.lewis-school.co.uk/topics). We are always adding more to our repertoire too.
In 2019, we are not listing specific dates as we have found that potential participants’ availability can vary significantly over school holidays. Instead, contact us and tell us what you would like to receive training in. If we can match you up with like-minded applicants, we will do so, or we can provide you with bespoke one-to-one teacher training.

INSET for UK Schools
Supporting primary and secondary teachers
The number of students in UK schools whose first language is not English is increasing. Government figures (Jan 2018) identify that 21.2% of primary school children and 16.6% of secondary school pupils use another language other than English at home.
You may have wondered why some of your pupils do not, for example, use articles or they leave out the verb ‘to be’; they may have difficulties understanding cultural references which you use or your pupils may quickly lose attention in class as they reach linguistic overload. These are common features of learners who are receiving input in their second language.
If you would like some tips on teaching pupils whose first language is not English, please contact us.
The course will be tailored specifically to your school’s needs. It can be:• any length from a half-day session up to a week-long programme• delivered at your school, at our centre• scheduled during holiday time, weekends, or the working week (fitting around school hours)• based on more specifically-defined language needs (knowledge and/or teaching practice)
We also offer INSET to teachers of other modern languages. This focuses primarily on language teaching approaches, methods, procedures and techniques. Commonly requested topics include 1st and 2nd language acquisition theories, student engagement, learning styles, lesson planning, classroom management and materials use. We tailor this service to meet your training development needs, as well as your tight schedules. Your INSET can be booked as a standalone session or as part of a course of up to 5 days.
Prices start at £85 per hour plus trainer travel expenses.
