What was the purpose of the Lewis and Clark expedition?

Lewis and Clark were enlisted by Thomas Jefferson to explore the Louisiana Territory, in particular the area along the Missouri River, to find out what kind of land, vegetation, people, and natural resources were in the territory (survey the land.)

the Western Ocean (Pacific).

Jefferson’s House

Lewis and Clark recorded receiving a robe from the Mandan chief Black Cat. The Ft. Mandan shipment to Jefferson contained seven buffalo robes, including the battle robe that he sent to Monticello.

Visitors to Jefferson's Indian Hall reported seeing "offensive and defensive weapons" among the Indian collections.

Clark described the ritual of smoking as "the greatest mark of friendship and attention." Pipes were also important diplomatic gifts symbolizing the relationships that smoking together cemented.

On the Northern Plains a young woman must earn the right to do quillwork within a quillwork society by offering gifts to an elder woman in exchange for instruction in the techniques and rituals.

Fremont Expedition

• What was the purpose of the Fremont expedition?– To survey the Western territory of the United

States, he explored the lands between the Mississippi and Missouri River and mapped portions of the Des Moines River. He also went into portions of Utah and California.
