Spokane Public Schools expects ALL seniors to

apply to a post-high school program. Military: High School Diploma Technical Program: Requirements vary;

need to contact particular program Community College: High school diploma

or GED; earn an AA or AS; Asset/Compass placement tests required

Testing Requirements SAT Reasoning/ACT – Either one or both are

accepted by most colleges. ALL scores must be sent to the college through the SAT/ACT site. SAT Subject Tests are required by some colleges.

Application EssaysWeave in the 4 P’s in your responses: Personality – What characteristics make

you unique or stand out from the crowd? Pride – What is something you’ve

accomplished or feel especially proud of? Personal Story – Tell your story. If you

have experienced difficulties or personal challenges, share how you dealt with them and what you learned through the process.

Proofread for Quality – Ask a teacher, counselor or adult to proofread and give feedback.

Student Office Procedures

Application Worksheet – Refer to Senior Packet, Page 12.

Transcript Request Form (Pink) – If the college requires a hard copy of student’s H.S. transcript. Request a “weighted” (5.0 scale) transcript

IF the college requests it, otherwise it’s “unweighted” (4.0 grading scale).

Letters of Recommendation – Some colleges require teacher and/or counselor recommendation, electronic or hard copy. Complete Autobiography & Resume. Make personal contact.

Autobiography Guide/Resume Guide (Purple) – Use to create a your bio and resume. Completed Autobiography & Resume must be turned into Mrs. van Halderen to begin 2 week process.

Transcript Requests – allow minimum 24 hours. Letters of Recommendations – allow a

MINIMUM of TWO WEEKS for processing.

Counselor’s Tips Create an email account - specifically for

colleges/scholarships – hotmail, gmail, etc. and check it regularly!

Email Address – make sure it is appropriate…..

Use your legal name – on all your applications.

Visit the schools – if you can – if not, online!

Eighth semester grades – do count! Keep a calendar – with all your deadlines. Keep copies – of all application materials

and communications…just in case. This is YOUR application – complete it

yourself.

available Jan. 1, 2016. Cannot submit FAFSA application – until

January 1st Submit before February 1st (Estimate

earnings now, verify later) CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE – Required by

some schools. Application for nonfederal financial aid for 400 colleges & scholarship programs.

Tuition Reduction Program in 16 western states. Individual Colleges – have their own list of

scholarships – may have separate application. Community Resources – foundations, local

A Few Reminders You still need to GRADUATE from high

school! Complete all Requirements: 22 credits,

a High School and Beyond Pathway Plan, and meet state testing requirements.

New District School Board Policy: SPS has implemented an expanded grading scale to motivate students to push to the next level. Begins this semester. Includes “+” and “-” grading.

An offer of admission and/or scholarship CAN be rescinded.
