Potential Paths – Education Requirements

Spokane Public Schools expects ALL seniors to

apply to a post-high school program. Military: High School Diploma Technical Program: Requirements vary;

need to contact particular program Community College: High school diploma

or GED; earn an AA or AS; Asset/Compass placement tests required

4 Year College: High school diploma; above and beyond high school graduation requirements (e.g., 2+ years world language, 3+ years math, 3+ years science, math and/or science class senior year); SAT/ACT

Testing Requirements SAT Reasoning/ACT – Either one or both are

accepted by most colleges. ALL scores must be sent to the college through the SAT/ACT site. SAT Subject Tests are required by some colleges.

YOUR GOAL is to complete the application process before Thanksgiving break.

Application EssaysWeave in the 4 P’s in your responses: Personality – What characteristics make

you unique or stand out from the crowd? Pride – What is something you’ve

accomplished or feel especially proud of? Personal Story – Tell your story. If you

have experienced difficulties or personal challenges, share how you dealt with them and what you learned through the process.

Proofread for Quality – Ask a teacher, counselor or adult to proofread and give feedback.

Holistic Review Philosophy

What do colleges look for in a potential student? GPA

specific majors. Recommendations – if requested

Submit ONLY the information the college is requesting. If they don’t ask for a

recommendation or transcript – don’t send it.

Student Office Procedures

Application Worksheet – Refer to Senior Packet, Page 12.

Transcript Request Form (Pink) – If the college requires a hard copy of student’s H.S. transcript. Request a “weighted” (5.0 scale) transcript

IF the college requests it, otherwise it’s “unweighted” (4.0 grading scale).

Letters of Recommendation – Some colleges require teacher and/or counselor recommendation, electronic or hard copy. Complete Autobiography & Resume. Make personal contact.

Autobiography Guide/Resume Guide (Purple) – Use to create a your bio and resume. Completed Autobiography & Resume must be turned into Mrs. van Halderen to begin 2 week process.

Transcript Requests – allow minimum 24 hours. Letters of Recommendations – allow a

MINIMUM of TWO WEEKS for processing.

1.) Turn in all completed forms and requests IN PERSON to

Mrs. van Halderen or Mrs. Westfall in the Student Office

2.) Pick up Transcripts and Letters of Recommendation

in the RED BOX titled “College Transcripts”

YOU are responsible for MAILING all Transcripts and Letters of Recommendations

that are NOT sent electronically.

Student Office Process

Counselor’s Tips Create an email account - specifically for

colleges/scholarships – hotmail, gmail, etc. and check it regularly!

Email Address – make sure it is appropriate…..

Use your legal name – on all your applications.

Visit the schools – if you can – if not, online!

Eighth semester grades – do count! Keep a calendar – with all your deadlines. Keep copies – of all application materials

and communications…just in case. This is YOUR application – complete it

yourself.

available Jan. 1, 2016. Cannot submit FAFSA application – until

earnings now, verify later) CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE – Required by

some schools. Application for nonfederal financial aid for 400 colleges & scholarship programs.

Scholarship Search Beware of Scams! Scholarship applications

are always free. – watch for mailings at home! Career Center – Room 105, guidance &

deadlines WUE – Western Undergraduate Exchange,

Tuition Reduction Program in 16 western states. Individual Colleges – have their own list of

scholarships – may have separate application. Community Resources – foundations, local

A Few Reminders You still need to GRADUATE from high

school! Complete all Requirements: 22 credits,

a High School and Beyond Pathway Plan, and meet state testing requirements.

New District School Board Policy: SPS has implemented an expanded grading scale to motivate students to push to the next level. Begins this semester. Includes “+” and “-” grading.

An offer of admission and/or scholarship CAN be rescinded.
