Lowest note in the harp arrangements is D almost 2 octaves below middle C, so it would be best to have a full range lever harp or a pedal harp to play these arrangements.

Salvatori, Gail Christmas Meditations $25.00 [75150]Gail’s book for pedal harp and solo instrument is a joy for the Christmas season. The accompanying instrument is pedal harp and the solo instrument can be viola, violin/flute, or cello. There are pull-out parts for cello, violin and viola. All parts are the same, but written for different instruments. We played through each and every one of these pieces and they truly are a joy. Unusual harmonies and accompaniment patterns grace the book – there is so much soul in this music. Originally, Ms. Salvatori wrote these meditations for viola and at our request she has kindly provided us with additional solo parts but written for cello and violin (or flute, or any melody instrument in C). The harp parts are considered intermediate to upper intermediate, and are very well written (edited by Barbara Fackler). The songs are: Coventry Carol, Infant Lowly, Joy to the World, Rocking (probably a well-known folk song but I’m not sure the origin, maybe someone can tell me), In the Bleak Midwinter, Trip to Sligo/Pat-a-Pat, Of the Father’s Love Begotten/Searching for Lambs, Whence Comes this Rush of Wings?, The Saviour of the World is Born. This book will be a treasure for any gigging harpist during the Christmas season. It may even be your favorite part of the gig. Please note: Joy to the World, In the Bleak Midwinter,Trip to Sligo/Pat-a-Pan, and The Saviour of the World can be played on lever harp with minor adjustments.


Lever Harp Ensembles – General

Anderson/Jeanie O. Celtic Trios V2 for Harp, Flute and Cello $20.00[93630]The titles in this collection are: March Madness, Dunfermline, Pink Peonies, Skye Boat Song and Tell Me Why. March Madness is in 7/8. It’s not hard, but you have to count it. It’s really very clever - if you’re going to sight read this one, please make sure all of your musicians are expert counters. Fortunately we were playing this through in the shop and were almost on the floor laughing because apparently we are all 7/8 challenged here. Dunfermline and Pink Peonies are lovely originals, Tell Me Why is a parlor type folk song reminiscent of Stephen Foster. Melodies. The Skye Boat Song arrangement has nice play among the instruments. The cello certainly adds so much to these arrangements. The instruments go back and forth with melody and harmony.

Dance of the Harps is presented with an underlying 3/4 accompaniment of swaying rhythm. The melody is shared between the first and second parts, while the third part provides underlying rhythm. The melody develops and expands and is followed by a sharply contrasting middle section, which is much faster and jig-like. In this section, the harps let loose in their dance, which has become spirited and playful. Following this faster middle section, the ensemble returns to the original melody, but with greater intensity and rhythmic vitality. As the piece comes to its dramatic conclusion, layer upon layer of rich harmonies unfold and become increasingly intense, culminating in a bell-like explosion of syncopated celebratory sound. The piece can be played by an ensemble of beginning to intermediate lever or pedal harpists, as each of the three parts is written with a different degree of technical difficulty. Wood, CarolMermaids $17.00 [92017]Carol Wood has created yet another super work for harp and voice, with several harp solos.From Carol: Mermaids and their kindred water spirits such as naiads, lorelei, and sirens are often musical creatures. They sing and even play harps or lyres in our myths, art, and poetry, like the nereids in Walter de la Mare’s “Sunk Lyonesse.” A collection of harp music about mermaids, therefore, seemed like an attractive idea to me. I’ve used several “watery” musical devices, including parallel fourths, whole-tone glisses, and arpeggios built on diminished and half-diminished sevenths, to suggest the element in which mermaids live and play and sing. The “Little Blue Barcarolle” is somewhat different from the typical barcarolle, the rhythm of which is usually meant to suggest the gentle roll of a small boat. Here, the rhythm and the blues mode suggest, I hope, that mermaids are playfully rocking the boat. “Iona’s Mermaid” is based on the medieval story of a mermaid who wanted to be baptized by the monks living on the holy island of Iona. Though the poor mermaid swam round and round the island, the pious monks refused to baptize her, presumably because they believed a mermaid had no soul. “From the Rocks” is the kind of song that mermaids might sing to lure sailors onto the rocks that will destroy their ships. “The Forsaken Merman,” by the Victorian poet Matthew Arnold, is a touching poem about a despondent merman and his children, left alone by the human woman who returns to her life on land. The Victorians were particularly fascinated by mermaids. Many painters of the period depicted them, including the late Pre-Raphaelite, J. W. Waterhouse. His painting “A Mermaid,” is reproduced on the cover of this collection, by kind permission of the Royal Academy of Art (London).

Salvatori, Gail Christmas Meditations $25.00 [75150]Gail’s book for pedal harp and solo instrument is a joy for the Christmas season. The accompanying instrument is pedal harp and the solo instrument can be viola, violin/flute, or cello. There are pull-out parts for cello, violin and viola. All parts are the same, but written for different instruments. We played through each and every one of these pieces and they truly are a joy. Unusual harmonies and accompaniment patterns grace the book – there is so much soul in this music. Originally, Ms. Salvatori wrote these meditations for viola and at our request she has kindly provided us with additional solo parts but written for cello and violin (or flute, or any melody instrument in C). The harp parts are considered intermediate to upper intermediate, and are very well written (edited by Barbara Fackler). The songs are: Coventry Carol, Infant Lowly, Joy to the World, Rocking (probably a well-known folk song but I’m not sure the origin, maybe someone can tell me), In the Bleak Midwinter, Trip to Sligo/Pat-a-Pat, Of the Father’s Love Begotten/Searching for Lambs, Whence Comes this Rush of Wings?, The Saviour of the World is Born.
