ABOUT US

The beginning

Level Six had its modest beginnings back in 1997 during an eight month surfing trip from Vancouver, British Columbia to San Jose, Costa Rica. Our founders and current directors Stig Larsson and Tyler Lawlor took some time to train, surf and paddle in Costa Rica during the winter to prepare for Slalom National Team Trials. While there, idea to create a line of apparel for paddlers was born.

Level Six start up was small. In their first year, they produced only one piece of technical paddling gear -The Chubb- a lycra/rubber/neoprene combination rash guard/pad-dling top as well as a few choice board shorts for girls and guys. Acting as designers, sewers, salesmen and even models, the boys employed their extensive paddling experience to ensure the product was the best it could be and defied the skeptics who thought that a little Canadian company could not compete with the big industry names. But this is exactly what the industry needed – a core paddling company with no ties to the corporate world.

The small company had its challenges. Frequent trips to Montreal fabric warehouses, finding willing seamstresses, searching for materials and creating designs from scratch was just part of the fun. With no designing background, designs and materials were a little off the norm, but that is what made Level Six different. Stig and Tyler designed what they wanted to wear on and off the water, and it just worked.

While paddling full time on the Canadian Slalom Team, Stig and Tyler survived by selling Level Six gear to other World Cup Circuit paddlers and friends, often through classic “out of the back of their truck” selling at races and rodeos.

The Olympics and beyond

The year 2000 proved to be a thrilling and challenging year. Paddling in Level Six gear, Tyler participated in the Olympic Summer Games in Sydney, Australia, making a top ten finish. Keeping business going, training and working proved difficult but Stig and Tyler persevered and came out even stronger.

After the Sydney Olympics, Tyler and Stig decided it was time to move the company ahead. Dry tops, lightweight paddling jackets, paddling pants, waterproof breatha-bles and a whole new line of clothing filled their line to match the needs of the industry. They found a wealth of knowledge from their own personal paddling experience as well as from their friends and co-paddlers.

The hard work and designs began to pay off – stores were calling from around the world looking to get their hands on some Level Six. They seemed to be doing something right. People were inspired by the innovative designs, progressive styles, the modest and friendly Canadian way we do things and above all, the fact that the testingground for the gear was the mighty Ottawa River.

The future

After thirteen years of business the future shines bright. Level Six continues to redesign, challenge and recreate paddling gear as we know it today. Like other industries, Level Six believes the paddling world needs an identity of its own and that is what Level Six will continue to provide with innovative, distinctive casual apparel and the best working gear on the market.

With our passion for paddling and the outdoors linked so directly to the natural environment, we have been leading the charge with respect to river and environmental conservation. Our partnerships with Waterkeeper Alliance, Ottawa Riverkeeper, and Five 2 Nine Productions are allowing us to make great strides in conservation, and help ensure our great waterways are around for future generations.

TECHNICAL OUTERWEAR

The 2011 line of technical outerwear brings some major updates and innovations to the forefront. The design depart-ment worked closely with our global athletes to improve our existing line and develop a wide range of new products to complement it.

The Reign collection is built with creeking and expedition paddling at its core. Constructed mainly from our renowned eXhaust 3 ply fabric, both the Reign dry top and Reign pant offer unparalleled durability and comfort, all in the most watertight top/pant combo ever created by Level Six. They employ extra tough cordura panels on the elbows, forearms, and shoulders of the top and in the knees, soles, and rear of the pant. The top features an extra long adjustable inner tunnel, a chest pocket with side access, fleece lined hand warming pockets accessible while wearing a PFD, and latex inner gaskets with adjustable over-gaskets throughout.

SPRAYSKIRTS

The whitewater sprayskirt line sees big changes with the addition of 2 specific cockpit sizes in our rubber rand models. This ensures a better fit and seal on a wider variety of boats.

The Excursion sprayskirt is a touring skirt constructed from our renowned eXhaust 2.5 ply waterproof breathable nylon. This skirt is already making waves in Europe due to its versatility, ease of use, and waterproof construction.

ACCESSORIES

The river safety category has been expanded with the addition of the Blackfly throwbag, a safety belt used for throw bag storage and deployment, and a new extraction kit.

LAYERING

Options are the name of the game in layering for 2011. Our ever popular Radiator pants and Lunch Box shorts have new lighter weight counterparts, made from a thinner 0.5 mm neoprene. Our lycra line also had an extensive aesthetic makeover, with bold colors and patterns that closely match the shorts in the apparel line.

1. DURABLE WATER REPELLANT SPRAYDesigned to make surface water bead off the jacket, this spray is a crucial part of the garments breathability. There are several DWR’s available and their effec-tive durability is reflected in their price. Because our gear is made for paddling, Our DWR is the toughest available.

2. FACE FABRIC185g/m2 100% nylon. We went with a lighter denier of nylon for the 2.5 Ply line of gear that would feel nice and soft to the hand without sacrificing strength.

3. eXhaust MEMBRANEThis Layer provides the systems waterproofness and breathability. The eXhaust membrane is a ultra thin layer that has micro pores small enough to prevent water from penetrating but large enough to allow body vapor (sweat) to es-cape. 4. MEMBRANE PROTECTIONA diamond shaped grid is screened to the underside of the waterproof breath-able eXhaust membrane. Being thinner than 3-ply Tricot, this film is the best choice to increase the toughness of our lightweight paddling gear.

The Poseidon was a new addition to the Level Six line in 2010. Built on the knowledge gained from producing the popular Barrier Drysuit, the Poseidon is the open boating/raft guide counterpart that turns out to be at home on a kite board or sail boat as well. It features double layered seat and knee panels and over the shoulder entry zipper. It is truly a “jack of all trades” watersports dry suit.

The Current is a 3-season light weight recreational or light whitewater paddling pant. SUN PROTECTION

Our UPF 50+ garments provide superior sun protection as well as practicality and style.

What does the UPF Rating Mean?

UPF stands for “ultraviolet protection factor”. Our UPF 50+ rating means that no more than 1/50th of the sun’s UVA and UVB rays pass through the fabric. UPF is different than the SPF (sun protection factor) rating found on sunscreens because SPF measures the amount of time it takes for sun-exposed skin to redden, while UPF measures the amount of UV radiation that penetrates a fabric and reaches the skin. UVB rays are the type that cause sunburn on the surface layer of the skin, while UVA rays penetrate beneath the skin’s surface and accelerate skin’s aging.

Sun Protection

- Our sunsuits and rashguards are made from a lycra/polyester blend. The yarn for these items is treated with a chemical sunblock before being woven.

- Our board shorts are made from tightly-woven, polyester-brushed microfibre. This fabric is also treated with chemical sunblock.

- The tight weave of both of our sun protection fabrics reinforces their UPF factor, especially when wet.

Practicality

- More effective than sunscreen, each garment offers full protection from the moment it is put on - no re-application necessary!

- Both our lycra/polyester and microfiber fabrics are also treated for chlorine and salt water resistance.

- The front sidewinder zipper on the Apollo sun suits makes for easy diaper changes.
